JY is right about how the sport drives the community. The pyramid works from top to down and not the opposite. FOR EVERY TWENTY WHO SPECIALIZE, FIVE MUST BE CAPABLE OF ASTONISHING FEATS"
I believe y’all are siding with keeping the sport. So y’all can keep doing what y’all do, on this platform. The way John talks about how better CrossFit is, than orange theory or f45. But then lower CrossFit to there(OT & F45) level. If the sport goes away. There is know way JY believes that. CrossFit has more to offer, than OT or F45. It’s definitely more than just the sport.
OMG!!! Finally some voices of reason. We’re so lost in the doom & gloom these days. I will support CrossFit because it changed my life. But I think we also need CrossFit the sport to inspire to be even greater.
I’m a new listener. My sister has been a fan for awhile and actually met all 3 of you at the 2023 CrossFit Games. She told me that The Barbell Spin is best CrossFit podcast to listen to. I will be honest. Before I listened to your latest podcast and GWTP latest’s podcast, I wanted to boycott the Open as well as encourage others to do so. I cannot even describe how I felt after the tragedy at the games. I was heartbroken to see how it torn the community apart. I was upset with HQ for not accepting any responsibility or apologizing to the community. However, after listening to the Spincast and GWTP, the worst thing I could do is boycott the Open. Yes, I’m mad at HQ, but I love my CrossFit Community more. I don’t want to see the sport die. JY made an excellent point that we all started CrossFit because of the Games (whether it was directly or indirectly). For example, my brother and I started CrossFit, because my sister told us about it. She started CrossFit, because she saw the Games on TV. If the sport dies, it will all go down. I don’t know if I will make a difference or not by being one of the people who do not boycott the games, but for the sake of the CrossFit Community and my love of the sport, I will do it. Thank you for opening my eyes. I enjoy listening to you all. I have to admit that JY was an acquired taste, but he grew on me. Keep up the great work!
When it comes to the open what i think is being missed in this conversation is that individuals are encouraging people not to sign up for the open (right or wrong) not encouraging them not to participate in the community. At my gym most people dont even do all 3 workouts they many times only do 1 or 2 so signing up and paying for a ranking isn't worth it anyways. Members can still come and participate in the commuity without giving extra money to HQ if they don't want to continue contributing extra to the games financially outside of what their affiliate pays. I dont think that takes away from the community and spirit aspect of the open.
My brother literally started CrossFit in 2015 because he saw Froning on youtube doing cool things. Then I did it and my brother and I influenced at least a dozen other people to do it, who influenced others etc. etc.

It’s crazy to think that if CrossFit didn’t put the games on that the sport would go away! You could have no more games and there’d still be Rogue, WZA, Dubai, A massive European event, a massive event here in Australia, NCC, Crash
Well yeah, there are events and organizers that can stand their own and would have to decide in what capacity they want to continue. But would there still be a sport called Crossfit and people called Crossfit athletes? Rn everything is built around the Games. Rogue is the "all star, athlete showcase " game after the Games, Dubai is the "off season proving grounds" for the upcoming season, WZA is the big party that starts the year. That structure can't exist without a main event. So either one of them would need to become the main event, or it would have to be replaced with something new. Once that happens, "Crossfit athletes“,"Crossfit sport" ceases to exist. It'll be "iF3 functional fitness athlete", "Lil' Willy-boy's project athlete", "Rogue athlete" or whatever. And it might be very similar to a crossfit, but certainly way different.

You guys will still be around if the sport dies. The athletes will just disperse to smaller things like Grid, Hyrox, ect…
Tons of fitness to cover still, especially with ever growing sport of strongwomen.
Crossfit the sport to me actually ruined the CrossFit community and pigeon holed it marketing wise. I want my little sister and mother to do CrossFit but they believe you have to look like rich ironing or manly Katrin to do CrossFit so they don't sign up.

Of the 60 members of our gym, over 50 could not name a Games athlete
True. But that doesn’t mean the programming hasn’t been influenced by Games season. Dumbbells were almost never programmed prior to the 2017 Open. The sport side pushes innovation and progress.
