When we did it, we didn’t do the recitation, either. But we did read through it at the beginning. I also cut out a lot of stuff, but we absolutely did the baking. The other units do have a different feel, though. But I’m doing this with a teenager and I don’t read it out loud to her, but I do discuss with her.

I found your channel because we are switching from a more eclectic unit study style TO TGTB. I've been homeschooling for 8 years and we have done a ton of unit studies and only one that I purchased actually really impressed me. The rest were usually repetitive like you said or included things that were more filler than enriching. However, we did some really amazing unit studies that I put together myself. We did a Night at the Museum unit study that took us 2 years. We were doing other things as well, but I worked as much into it as I could. We took a character at a time and studied their personal story, that period in history along with their local geography. With Roosevelt we added a bit of politics, Amelia Earhart had us studying air travel, the Wright brothers, and such. We did Easter Island and studied their history. Even the tiny cowboy is a real person and boy did he have a crazy life story. There was science and zoology with the monkey and dinosaur. Math with Einstein. It was a blast. We also did a hurricane study and let me tell you, I can now predict how bad hurricane season will be based on the weather in northern Africa. LOL We did etymology with Harry Potter because she used a lot of Latin. My daughter is 17 and I have 3 boys 9, 7, and 4. I decided that open and go would be better for me in this season. I just can't keep up with the planning and the rest of life anymore. My oldest is doing mostly self-taught now, but the grading this year for her. Ugh. So we found TGTB and I printed up math and LA in October and haven't looked back. I would totally say go for the unit study if you are in a season when you have the time for it. My best memories with my oldest are the weird but fascinating things we learned by digging really deep into something on our own. I will probably do some small unit studies with my boys once a year so they can experience that too. I just can't do it all right now and something has to give. Love your videos!

Wow thanks for all the tips! Totally feeling like this is a season for me for sure... Not closing the door on TGTB just pressing pause for a bit! Xxx

We did the Gather Round Christmas unit for the first time this year, and truthfully, I was not a fan. I cut out a few things and tweaked it for us. All in all it did however give me inspiration for next year.

I think I agree with you, I see some goodness and some inspiration but not overall a fan! Glad I am not the only one! Xxx
