      Game developers and software developers in general decide to take the "early access" business strategy to try to inject capital alongside the development phase of the software. If in THIS stage they already decided to take this approach, and yet the software is way less baked than the competition, the things don't look so good for them. People might say that it is better than MSFS on its release day in 2020, but the simple truth is the xplane12 must compete with MSFS 2022 in its current state. I wouldn't have high hopes, but lets wait and see.

    • @jimj2683
      @jimj2683 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Only way X-plane can compete with MSFS is if they collaborate with Google and use Google Maps and their AI technology.

    • @LuisimiTV
      @LuisimiTV ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's my backup sim.. it has to get better... it's beta.. within 6 months it'll be a different beast. if they want to really compete.. they will need to up the ante in the graphics arena...however... I can live with it has a lot of great development ahead and addons for it.. VR is key for me however.

      I'm an XP enthusiast. I even create open-source mods and aircraft for XP! I'm holding off purchasing XP12 at this point simply because of the poor VR performance. Normally I'm one of the first to purchase a new XP release, but VR has become such a very big part of my flight simulation experience, and I can't use XP12 in VR at 17 fps. XP11 gets 40 fps in the same scenario.

      @@TheHexperience I don't think XP12 is "down" just yet. I'm still hopeful, but LR needs feedback. My feedback is to hold off my purchase until they've performed at least one solid optimization pass on XP12. It needs it badly, especially in VR. I won't throw in the towel on XP12 unless they make no movement on the performance issues after a couple of months. Better performance is the best "new feature" they could add right now.

    Hi, thanks for taking the time and compare between the different VR headsets.
    Currently I'm sticking with the "built in" solution - which is Steam VR and the "Reverb G2", I totally agree that the performance is not as good as in XP11 but you will have to tinker with the graphical settings in order to have a smoother experience even in the early access.
    The main sliders I modify for better performance are: "FSR: Ultra or high", "Antialiasing: no higher than MSAA x2", "shadows: no higher than medium".
    I quickly found out that FSR is really useful to keep a steady FPS in VR, although it also depends on the scenery where you fly in.
    I'll continue waiting for XP12 to mature just like I did with MSFS2020, which became an enjoyable product to fly in.

    I'm getting about 17 fps in XP12 with a Valve Index headset, SteamVR, Ubuntu 20.04. In XP11, same configuration, I'm getting 40 fps. I did some performance testing under Linux using the "sar" and "nvidia-smi" commands. Here's a summary of what I found in my test scenario:
    X-Plane 12.00b2 in VR mode uses ~15% of CPU cores and 59% of GPU cores for 17 fps.
    X-Plane 12.00b2 in Flatscreen mode uses ~18% of CPU cores and 48% of GPU cores for 53 fps.
    X-Plane 11.55r2 in VR mode uses ~15% of CPU cores and 56% of GPU cores for 40 fps.
    X-Plane 11.55r2 in Flatscreen mode uses ~21% of CPU cores and 43% of GPU cores for 103 fps.

    • @nemysisretrogaming3771
      @nemysisretrogaming3771 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't forget your CPU. With games and VR right now every little bit of performance you tweak out of a game is down to the CPU due to fact that games/simulators still don't don't really take advantage of the cores available and still render using pretty much one core.
      Processor cache size, processor Cache ratio speed and in general CPU speed are your main factors for getting that FPS to hit constant acceptable rates.
      If devs of sims and games really want to to make VR better right now they could split the render process to two cores, one for each eye and then we can really get the best out of our current hardware.

      @@nemysisretrogaming3771 interesting stuff. Do you know any channels covering just pc hardware performance in VR?
      Im trying to make an informed decision about my next upgrade to improve my VR performance and lift those 1% lows i get in some games.
      Im running a 8600k@4.8 and 3080 12GB and am tossing up between a 4080 and a 13700k.
      Im preetty sure my best bet is a platform upgrade to 13700k which should unlock much more performance on my 3080 12GB but its just so hard to find VR performance metrics.

    • @nemysisretrogaming3771
      @nemysisretrogaming3771 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Horendus123 The main thing is to find a CPU that meets the criteria I mentioned above. Fast Core speed, highest processor cache size per core and fast processor cache frequency. If you stick with an Intel CPU then the Extreme tuning utility will be your go to app for simple overclocking although AMD's newest offering seems pretty good at a boost clock of 5.7ghz although I'd wait for Gamer's Nexus or Jayz 2 cents to do a review and see they really stack up.
      As far as motherboard you'll want something that can handle overclocking easily, in the realm of an ASUS ROG Strix or similar. You can go overboard with dominator motherboards etc with no real performance V price gains.
      DDR 5 ram is starting to get faster too, so you need to pick ram that has the lowest clock timings your budget will allow. For example in DDR 4 you want CL16 or lower if you pick 3600mhz ram, although the prices do go up quite a bit for lower clock timings.
      VR performance metrics are all over the show as there are games built for VR and games that have VR as an "option". Most sim games are not really built for VR hence the need for the fastest CPU, ram combo you can afford.
      Performance is variable based on the headset you use. To use the Reverb G2 v Quest 2. The reverb has an extra 32% pixel resolution and runs at 90hz (FPS). However the Quest 2 runs at 120hz (FPS) so it needs to push out 30 more frames per second and, in my opinion only is not really a viable option for running on a PC due to the connection. However most recent headsets allow you to select how fast the screen updates. So headset resolution and Display FPS on your headset is also another big factor.

  • @mattchristie1810
    @mattchristie1810 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Well that was a surprise, looked a LOT better than some of the other early access (non-Orbx) videos we've seen. Bugs are one thing, they'll be fixed soon. But there's some way to go yet on development of water textures, scenery (MSFS still beats ortho scenery out the box and is free worldwide!), clouds need work, and buildings/roads - massive distance to go! This stuff really does matter. Can they do it? Perhaps bits of it. Can they do it in time? I doubt it. They're already 2 years behind MSFS, and have come to market with an inferior product. I fear their market share will dwindle unless they do something extraordinary.

    Hi Steve
    I use the aero and have to mention to you that I tried the Zibo and the Cockpit textures in xplane 12 are amazing and super sharp as well as the runway textures compared to the pmdg Cockpit. Night and day differences. Have you noticed this?
    I even feel a sense of scale on take off with xplane12 that is not there so much in msfs2020. Maybe the flight model does this.

    I’m going to leave x-plane12 for a little bit. As there websites suggests there is a long way to go on development. I don’t have the time to assist with this, so I don’t think running it myself and making judgment right now is really fair.
    I am however excited to give my Orbx true earth uk scenery a run again, so will keep a close eye on the progress.
    One thing I would hope for, is to have a decent vr mirror, rather than the camera phone perspective.
    I’ve got around this in the past, but to share with an audience it’s a must.
    I do believe XP12 will get up to speed eventually. But as Microsoft got out of the blocks so early, I think they will always be ahead.

    How is the core utilization in Xplane 12? Is it better then MFS?

    Laminar didn’t even test with the g2 at all lol,pretty stupid when it may be the most used in flight simming.

    VR in XP12 is a steaming pile of rubbish...I wrote Austin Meyer to tell him this very thing and he wrote back that they should make IQ tests mandatory before peeps can buy the Beta. Classic!
    Contrast that with XP11 in VR where I can get up to 90 FPS with a Reverb G1, 11700k and 3080ti using 3jfps and decent graphic settings. XP12 is three steps backwards...not sure if they care based on Meyery's reply to me...

    Why anyone wastes there time with Xplane VR is beyond me. MSFS blows it away in immersion nothing like it. Beautiful scenery, skies etc.

      we need to keep supporting xplane because microsoft will start slacking off again. competition is good for simmers

    Neither x-plane-12 nor HP Reverb are market-ready, but both lie about their VR capabilities. This technology won't work for another decade or two. Steam VR, X-plane 12, and the HP reverb are a particularly dysfunctional combination. Steam crashes constantly (or does not recognize the headset), the headset will not recognize the controllers, and the imagery is low resolution, jittery, and unreliable. I just spent ~$5000 on a gaming computer custom configured to VR flight sim, and this is a total disaster.
