I like the fact junji Ito is experimenting a lot with his work and explore all type of fear. A short story you think is too weird or boring might be absolutely terrifying for someone else
For sure. That's one of the reasons it's interesting to read/listen to people review his stuff. Everyone has their own point of view. The Town Without Streets is a great example I think, I've met people who didn't find it scary at all but some people feel extremely uncomfortable reading it.
@@britneynicole8903 It's a comic series. He's good. Sadly you can't ask many people to read his work cause there is a lot of nudity in some, and gore so he holds nothing back for his story. The shock comes a lot from the images of the page turn and bam, so it won't work in a book. I think books exist like his, but they're not short but drawn out and not as fun. One favorite people like is a mountain where people are compelled to go to and keep seeing strange engravings that look like humans. They see on the other side the engravings are more alien like and elongated. While studying them people sleep and overnight keep going missing. They notice people are inclined by some force that their hole or spot is for them and step inside and aren't seen again. Finally, the main people find their hole and travel through it...they slowly notice their bodies also elongate traveling to some weird light on the other side...people find corpses and their all slowly stretched and warped from the journey as the holes were slowly pulling them much like elongating ear holes. A much easier, more hollywood read is umazaki where a curse of spirals hits a island town. They all start seeing spirals in everything and strange stuff happens. It starts seeping into your real life cause in reality (the trick) golden design...most things in nature follow that pattern...so it's an interesting showcase. People think everything has been done before but overlook, maybe i haven't read everything...
In junji ito's stories it's not always about the horror but he also put his humor in his manga as well. The more u read his work the more u can see it.
I`ve recently read Sensor and I was really impressed. It`s kind of different...compared to works like e.g. Tomie or Uzumaki. But it has his own style and I really liked it. Especially the part with the suicidal bugs. It`s not one of my favourites by now, From the 7 Ito books I`ve read by now (Uzumaki, Shiver, Tomie, Lovesickness, Sensor, Gyo, Frankenstein) I would probably rank it at place 5. But it`s still a pretty decent story about religious fanatism and maybe also a bit about Idol culture like in many Ito stories. I haven`t read the Liminal Zone by now but I am very excited to buy and read it soon. I like the emphasis on japanese myths and places. I`m especially expectant for the story about the Aokigahara forest because I already often heard about it and think it`s a very interesting but also frightening place
While it may not be your cup of tea, short stories is what Junji Ito excels at. Uzumaki, Tomie and Sensor from this video are only exceptions to proving that he can create a proper connectet story as well but these are far rarer for him. The last good connected story I can remember from him would be Hell Star Remina, which you will probably really enjoy.
I'm so happy you do junji ito content now! If you keep reading them I will be so happy!! I'm happy you liked reading junji ito stories, and I hope you have an amazing day!
Just finished sensor today and i really enjoyed it. The chapter about the cliff and the bugs was my favorite, didnt see the grotesque visuals coming and that really made me more hooked into the story than ever before
Hey so just wanted to lyk that The Liminal Zone is just a short story collection. They’re not connected and it was just a bundle of short stories he made for an online magazine (I don’t remember the name). If you wanna check out more of his overarching stories the ones that have English releases that you haven’t read are Gyo, Remina, and Lovesickness. He also has some adaptations of books that are already a thing like Frankenstein and No Longer Human, which are both pretty good imo. Also he has a manga about his actual real life cats that’s a short slice of life and it’s awesome.
Love seeing some Junji Ito love. Honestly, the suicide bug part was one of the most horrific ones for me. The way I interpreted it was this was a way of not only tormenting the people that have lost someone near to them but to torture those who have already lost their lives. It's almost as if these people who just wanted an escape are cursed to this endless cycle of suffering with the only way out being to throw themselves under someone else's feet and hope that this is the time they can finally be free. Then whether it be purposely or by chance these same people who are suffering end up dragging down other people that are still alive when they sense those feelings of weakness, regret, and feeling as if they're responsible. You can really see it with the girl in the story after she steps on the first bug and is reminded about her boyfriend and they play at her insecurities over her issues she had with her faithfulness and the guilt that she could've been responsible. As soon as she looses it to those emotions, those bugs start swarming to try and be crushed under her feet, and the more of them she steps on the more she starts losing her own grip on herself and just giving into all of those emotions as she's crushing dozens of them. I find it especially interesting because during that scene the bugs never try to throw themselves under Byakuya's feet. I think she may have stepped on some inadvertently, but they weren't specifically trying to be crushed by her, almost as if they could sense all the suffering from the other girl and were just trying to chip away at it more and more. Maybe even to the point that she throws herself off of that same cliff and becomes just like them. After all, how long could someone mentally hold out when their entire life is being swarmed by grotesque insects that she is stepping on literally every second of her life and having them constantly remind her of her own failings, insecurities, fears, and guilt. I just love the way Junji Ito is able to tap into emotions like that and tell such a story without needing to actually say "Okay this is what's happening and this is what it means". I also just love that the interpterion I just gave could be COMPLETELY different than what other people may have gotten, because it means there's something deeper there that gets people thinking more in depths about it and why it's so scary. That's the best kind of horror.
Im gonna start begging for merphy to read Monster by Naoki Urasawa because that story is really good, its a mystery and the antagonist of the story is written extremely well
Itos humor is underrated. the crazy ideas he expands upon are largely in part to him just wanting to see something bizarre happen. while he does possess some of the most unnerving art in the medium, the events that transpire and actions of characters in a good amount of his stories can be viewed in an almost slapstick kind of lens if the horror aspect doesn't particularly get to someone. doubt ito is the kind of author to get upset at someone for laughing along with his stories
Yay! I loved both Sensor and Liminal Zone. You pointed out little things I totally missed and now I want to re-read them! I really liked Weeping Woman Way, I thought the idea of taking the 'paid mourner' thing to an extreme level and then it becoming more about the dead themselves. I really wanted more from this story to be honest it feels like a tease.
Sensor was the first of Junji Ito's works that i read and it's still my favorite! I've read Tomie and Uzumaki since then. I'm convinced that he just doesn't write bad stories lol
Wow! Just yesterday I watched one of your Tolkien reviews from a couple of years ago and you sounded even more congested than you do today. What a trooper! I haven't read Ito but Sensor looks creepy-fun. Thanks for both videos, and hope you feel better soon. :)
New follower here! Love that you've found and are enjoying the works of Junji Ito. I'd love to see you review and give your thoughts on some of his more prolific short stories, such as 'The Hanging Balloons' and 'The Enigma of Amigara Fault'. They can be found in 'Shiver' and 'Venus in the Blind Spot' respectively. One of his earlier stories, Red Turtleneck, is also a standout for me.
I actually think the short stories (called oneshots when it comes to manga usually) are when Junji Ito is at his best. Which is why I wish his New Voices in the Dark book was published in english, chapters like Splatter Film and The Enigma of Amigara Fault are some of my favorites, the latter is included in the larger book called Gyo.
@@britneynicole8903 He's written four long-form books that I know of for certain: Gyo, Uzumaki, Hellstar Remina, and Black Paradox. There's also Tomie, though it was released as a bunch of short stories over the course of about 10 years.
If you haven't already, please check out Kazuo Umezu . He's Ito's hero and you can see so much of what inspired him from Umezu's brilliant old horror stuff. I recommend Orochi, and The Drifting Classroom.
Junji’s Uzumaki was an interesting book so I’ll for sure look out for these ones as well. Seeing you read mangas is great they’re so underrated imo. Have to agree on that I'm not a fan of his short story work, prefer his work that spans over multiple stories. Not sure if you have read them but Liminal Zone sounds similar to Shiver and Fragments of Horror. Shiver has a story called Greased that I know grossed out a bunch of people, although I preferred The Long Dream as sleeping is not something we can escape. Fragments of Horror has a really cool cover with the cover has like a shining second print on it from one of the stories shining on it as it reflects in the sun. The stories from that one I recommend is Gentle Goodbye and Blackbird with Gentle Goodbye being the outstanding one between the two.
That would be so cool! And did you watch the book discussion from yesterday? It was so good and interesting. I love how there was a historical tilt to it.

ANd realy great humor. I laugh rarely loud out when I read something. But this manga accomplish its on a regular base.

I know that you weren't a fan of the manga and I can understand that. But please give this a chance. You can do it in a review format.
The Liminal Zone was really disappointing to me, none of the stories really worked in my opinion. I do like his other short story collections but I think the ideas he had in mind in this one weren’t the best. He even sort of confirms that himself at the end of the book, he mentions a lot of these ideas were like left over ideas that weren’t used before
"He gets me spiraling" I see what you did there Merphy! :D
