    Doflamingo is one of my all time favourite villains. He is so hatable and believable I love it.
    I also just really like his design. From his first appearance in One Piece he became one of my favourite characters based solely on his outfit. ‘DonQuixote Doflamingo’ is also just really fun to say.

    I think my favorites villains are ones that their goals arent wrong, but the methods they use to achieve them are. There is something interesting and compelling, when you see someone doing something awful but you can get why they are doing it. It not justifiable really to outsiders but that you can see the internal logic that got them there, its so unsettling and compelling. Although mustache twirling villians are very fun for different reasons.

      For me, it's the reverse. I don't find the right goal, wrong path villains interesting. His ego is built on the idea that it's not his fault that people do what he wants, and that because he can't help who he is that means he should get to do things, even if that hurts people.

    A character who I really appreciate for how it was well written is Light Yagami, from Death Note. You can understand how manipulative and subtle he can be, doing the wrong things for a "right cause". Light is very smart, and I liked how he was portrayed, how he articulates his movements, making his path clear of clues that he is Kira. First time I got into DN I enjoyed him a lot, second time I was more into L's side, although I still enjoy Light's character.

    • @jackwriter1908
      @jackwriter1908 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried Death Note but didn't get into it...
      It's just... I hate it when you portrait a Character to be extremely smart and than let him do something stupid so the plot get's along.
      In an early episode someone exclaimed on live television that they would find this Kira. And the first thing I thought was _It's a Trap!_
      After all until then they had no real evidence that someone controlled their deaths, so for some Detective to go on live television and claim they are going to capture Kira sounded so sus... And instead of looking into it Light immediatly killed him... Why? Sure he had a God Complex, but at that time there was no threat to him nor any real reason to kill a police officer who did or at least looked like to do his job.
      There are a few stories that may very well be good, that I haven't finished because of things like that.
      If your Character isn't smart, than let them make big mistakes. But if you have a smart character and have later have him fight in a battle of wits with another character... Than don't let him make stupid things to get the story along.

    • @jackwriter1908
      @jackwriter1908 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Anarchy Rising but that's what I said, just because you have a God Complex doesn't mean you suddenly become stupid.
      Sure probably thought no-one could outsmart him or something like that, but at that point no-one had evidence that there actually was someone doing that.
      So some Detective claiming he will investigate into someone who can kill you without being in the same room... No conplex in the world can explain that stupidity. It just feels like an attempt to give the police the knowledge where they should look into. Let's be honest if he didn't make that mistake, they porbably would have never been able to catch him, since they would have never known where Kira was.
      Light making mistakes is fine, especially when he starts thinking of himself as a god more and more, but just at the beginning, where he shortly before build a complicated security system for the Death Note...

    • @wittweirdo3066
      @wittweirdo3066 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jackwriter1908 I get your criticism. But you are wrong on a few fronts. Light had a a narcissistic attitude from the beginning actually. You can see hints of that in his first convo with Ryuk. Also, God complex CAN make you that stupid. In real life, it usually makes people even more stupid than light was tbh. Narcissism makes you incredibly delusional and unable to see reality in a practical way. Moreover, if you are a new murderer (like light was), then an action like L's would trigger a nervous reaction which would make you reckless and stupid, no matter how logical you are. You are seriously underestimating the amount of influence mental issues and phenomena can have on someone.

    • @trollerno.150

      @@jackwriter1908 him killing the detective is not stupid at all. If by any chance he was L, Light could've gotten rid of him. It's just that L was too smart for a highschool student which is completely fine.

      If he would want to portait a God like Image then he would have tried to kill the Detective beforehand, the fact that he killed him only after watching the livestream showed that he was a human, after all why would a god wait until there was a live stream.
      He could have easily waited a couple of days and then let the "Detective" kill some criminals before commuting suicide, instead he does something rash.

It has protagonists of course but, as Doflamingo said, the winner defines what justice is. And so, history decided we should stand for one particular side but really there isn't a "good" side. Thus reading Kingdom you find yourself cheering for monsters on your side and fearing ones that could be considered saints on the other side. This feels really confusing but great at the same time.

    One of the Villains from Tigana, by Guy Gavriel Kay gave me my first fantastic taste of what a fully fledged antagonist could add to an already Epic Story.
    In his followup book, A Song For Arbonne, Kay gave me 3 Antagonists of varying villainy, who added nuance to the emotional impact he’d successfully established in earlier work.
    David Gemmell’s Rigante Books had a satisfying mix of depth and oleaginous evil in the numerous antagonists presented.

    Admittedly, I like villains with morally grey motivations, like they're characters you could side with because their logic is sound, it's not necessarily 'bad', but it just depends on the point of view of the reader and the characters seeing what's going on. It's like, the villain isn't even cruel, perhaps manipulative, but not harsh, it's a character that people actually like and want to follow, but his motivation is in the gray area and can be seen as right or wrong depending on the perspective.

    Two of my favourite villains come from a series named Soulbound by Hailey Turner. (It's my all time favourite book series.) They are called Estelle and Yousiff, and from their first scene in book 1 i hated them, the way Hailey built these two up over the 6 books they're in was fantastic, each time i read the next book in the series i was like 'please, let this be it, please let this be it.'
    Like i have never wanted two characters to be so soundly destroyed as these two.
    I'm trying to think how to describe them. So they are God-Pack Werwolves, and it is their job to protect the packs under their jurisdiction, they do not do this, and book 2 is where the extent of how horrible they are is really displayed and took them from minor annoyance to villains i despised (Book 2 also introduced one of my favourite characters ever.) The leading characters of the series Patrick and Jono form their own God-Pack to rival Estelle and Yousiff...i can't say too much without spoiling it but the build up to the final fight with them is amazing. The levels they stoop to in the series to try and cling to power is unreal.
    They aren't even the main villains either, i'd say they were more the secondary villains.
    Also just throwing it out there, as last time i suggested this series i had someone sling verbal abuse at me because the main characters were Gay. So Soulbound is a 7 Book M/M (Adult) Urban Fantasy series with very graphic hanky panky scenes. And i loved every second of it.
