Vintage Thrills, Thrifted Steals! Antique Shopping Adventure

- The trifecta is here! A thrift store and a vintage boutique are springing up by Eastbrook Flea Market & Antique Mall, the one-stop place to find bargains, see cool vintage and find real antiques in Montgomery, Alabama. We scored a good flamingo painting on our last visit years ago...what will we find today?
Our first stop is the flea market/antique mall, where a combination of everything from vintage clothing and old housewares live between spaces filled with antique carved furniture, arts-and-crafts era pottery, classic American dinnerware and local memorabilia dating from the Civil War to the Civil Rights movement! We're immediately taken with a stylish Baccarat Rose Tiente decanter, but the 50% off costume jewelry shelf next to it produces our first buy. Once a 1950s department store, this place offers a mezzanine where MCM glass and 1910s dressers coexist, and a basement where you can find 75% off deals...if you can get to them!
We wrap up that store with a great buy on a Lladro elephant pair that should sell for over twice the $110 ticket price, then head next door to Helping Hands Thrift Store, where the best stuff fills a giant front window with the promise of vintage and collectible finds! A few things turn our heads, but it really is the new vintage market forming at the end of the strip that beckons us to continue on our quest for cool collectibles our customers crave. This place is just forming, but we get the benefit of shopping their pioneer dealers...new antique/vintage shops almost always have a few overlooked bargains, and this is no exception! We're excited to see a Vernon Kilns carafe in a fun color scheme, contemplate a large Metlox Sculptured Grape set at a very low price, then decide on a Syroco music-themed wall plaque at half of its recent eBay selling price.
Montgomery is much changed over the last 50 years, changing from the cradle of the Confederacy to the cradle of the Civil Rights movement, and we explore some of its rich history as we wend our way to a nearby farm market to prepare for a healthy journey ahead. We'll no doubt be back to shop here again!

Good evening, George! That mirror, for $350.00, is the kind of thing I really like. Loved the Mt. Washington Burmese piece. I've always liked old duck decoys, but I've never had a place to display as many of them as I'd want. The primitive one really did interest me. Loved that Crown Devon vase, and the one next to it. Fenton's "Orange Tree" is one of my favourite Carnival Glass patterns, especially in marigold, but punch sets do take a ton of real estate to display...even moreso than my beverage sets. I have a beverage set in marigold and one in blue, but the marigold is my favourite. That Tiara piece, with the lovebirds on it, actually looked like a pattern that was made _many_ years earlier, in Goofus Glass. Did that faux fireplace have hidden compartments in the sides? It looked like it could've concealed a bar. I liked the porcelain French trinket box.
If you get a chance, when you're in Alabama again, you might want to check out Black's Old & New Mall, at 124 N Brindlee Mountain Pkwy. I've been there one time, several years ago, and they actually had a lot more older items than new. It is a LARGE building, too.
I was so surprised to see a Mt. Washington piece in a mall these days, it's been ages! I would want a bookcase full of decoys, I've found a few nice ones over the years but not all at once. I really do think Orange Tree looks best in Marigold, it's a favorite pattern of mine too. The faux fireplace looked like it might have side shelves or drawers, but I couldn't get close enough to look.

Every time I see the "Union Label" I start singing the SNL version of the song. I recycle vintage ties into clothing. I will miss my source for them here in NY - I buy them in lots of 100 for 25 cents each. I will have to find all new sources in NC! Anybody who knows any good places in Western NC - hit me up! Cyd Charisse is very under appreciated as a dramatic actress. Known primarily as a song and dance girl with legs that went on forever. Not at all surprised that Candlewick has so many pieces. I see so much of it. I absolutely love it but just have no place for it. The primitive duck looks like something that a cub scout made for the Pinewood Derby!

Hey George 👋 So i have a friend who automatically dismisses a blown glass piece if it has a messy pontil. I say that it could be a significant piece from before anyone worried about the pontil. She is also dismissing newer pieces if the pontil isn't crystal clear. I'm afraid she's missing nice pieces at great prices as she is still learning. HELP
She is definitely missing out! A too-smooth (especially concave satin glass) pontil turns me off
The wardrobe is gorgeous - but is there room for it in a manufactured home? Seems very tall.
The new manufactured homes have surprisingly high (12') ceilings in a lot of cases
I smiled at the John Deere peddle tractor right at the end. My brothers and nephew have had several incarnations of these on the farm in Eastern Oregon. They’ve all been passed down through the generations.

George, I recently went to a church rummage sale and bought several items. The one that has me intrigued is a glass angel. There are no markings on it, it is hand blown glass and is very well done. It has a swirl stripe pattern in her dress and gold in the halo and wings and she has her hands clasped in the front. The stripes in her dress are white, clear and gold and the stripes in her sleeves match the stripe pattern in her dress. Now with all that said, how would I tell who the maker of this angel is? There are no stickers of any kind on her and no signatures on the glass. I am stumped.

I like circus peanuts too...definitely old school candy! I have changed a lot of storage from plastic to glass. Even my storage bowls for the kitchen and lunches I have slowly switched over to glass from plastic. After reading information I don't want to heat my food in plastic anymore. As a curvy woman I don't have much luck finding much at goodwill. I'm always looking for pants. Take care and thanks for sharing your hauls!

I love CANDEL WICK ... It sparkles like jewelry in all the lights ... I have a snack and smoke set that is great ... In it's original box lol
The ash fired moonshine jug is a Norman Smith. During prohibition his jugs were distributed here and most of the southern states. You can tell by the bands and the pinch at the bottom handle. He was related to my mother in law. The Smithsonian in DC has a few of his pieces.

You were about 45 minutes from me! I live in Clanton! If you can see the Peach Tower from I65, I live 15 minutes from the tower! That antique mall is fantastic!
I have a question about planters. I know a reseller that insists they aren’t really for planting anything - she gives them as gifts to friends who sew and calls them “scissors holders”. 🤷♀️ I have collected quite a few vintage planters (because I like them), but have rarely had good luck actually growing a plant in them. I was wondering if they were more for cut flowers. Times when I was in the hospital, I often got a “planter” with that spongy green “foam” and cut flowers in it. I still like picking up cute ones when I see them (I found a Treasure Craft pixie one at Goodwill!), but like my purchases to be useful, too. I figured if anyone knows the answer, you would.
It is a free country. Getting more expensive, maybe. But at least we still have room for pinch-sided glassware on the shelves and English umbrella stand habitat still abounds. Thank you for delving into the material roots of America with intelligence, grace and an inviting congenial manner once again, dear George.
