Haha, data geek here! Although I do love data, I wish I could have seen your VERY clear & practical advice when I first began my therapeutic ketosis experiment. After testing at different times of the day,, I can confirm your recommendations. I settled on your exact suggestions (2 tests each day and the times he said)

I just discovered your channel & really appreciate your subject matter. In 2014, I lost 20 lbs in 30 days because I was focusing on eliminating all inflammation to help me get back to walking from a botched foot surgery. I didn’t know about intermittent fasting or keto back then but apparently learned it naturally as the weight dropped off from eating lots of raw vegetables and all meat was grass fed or organic & fasting from dinner till coffee the next day. Lots of water. 9 years later, my body is now post menopausal and doesn’t bounce back so 10 lbs or even 5 feels like losing 50 so here I sit. Watching you ❤

I am a avid cyclist on keto for 4 months. Today I measured before a 50 mile 3 hour ride =92/.7 and then a few hours after = 65 / 1.5. Seems a very positive result.

Thank you for the information. I tested my ketone level each morning roughly 2 hours after waking up. However, I tested daily during my first 60 days. Test strips being expensive, I used my testing together with my journal to correlate how I felt, what I ate and what physical activity I did in relation to my ketone level. My goal was to learn how it felt to be really in ketosis. And I did loose weight. Now, I do not test very often. Mostly, I test to check if my gut or intuition is correct. I will make a guess at my ketone level, then test to see how close I am. I do this a few times a week or less.

  • @DeepakKumar-cd8ny
    @DeepakKumar-cd8ny 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Thankyou Dan, I have been burning through my strips, testing several times a day and when my results were bad I would test even more often so that I could see the numbers get better. Now I will only test once a day before my meal.

I just bought a blood ketone meter and this video was so helpful! I didn’t know if you were supposed to check ketones like you check blood glucose levels, when, how often, etc... As an RN I’ve only ever checked people’s blood glucose levels. Ketone levels and the normal ranges are a whole new thing for me. Love your channel. So glad I found it!! Data geek here. I like to track as to understand my body and what my body wants and needs. I thought I was noticing that my ketones looked better if I tested later, but most docs say to test when testing am glucose for the most accurate information. However, your point about pre-dawn makes perfect sense. I really enjoyed this, thanks so much. Keep ‘em coming. 😀

Geek here also! I'm new to the Keto diet, trying to reduce my blood glucose levels. I've been doing this for about six weeks now. Lowered my A1C from 8.1 to 7.0
Just started testing my Ketone level yesterday. It was a 3.5
I'm eating as best I can a low carb diet. I've dropped my weight from + or - 154lb's to + or - 133lb's. Weight loss is not my main concern. A1C and glucose levels are and getting off my meds are #1 concern. With doctor approval I'm off two diabetes meds and B/P med. Hopefully after next A1C test in July I can reduce or eliminate last diabetes meds.
Thank you Dr.Dan for your very easy to understand and informative methods.

I started keto 9 months ago and lost 60 lbs in the first 4 months and lost 90 lbs by month 6.5 but I’ve stalled (really gone up and down 10 lbs) the past almost 2 months (which I’ve had a few cheat days completely off keto and had “keto cheat days” where I went over my calories and over carbs a bit on my 1200 calorie/20 net carb goal. I honestly got comfortable with my weight and was happy but not anymore. I’m ready for the second wind! Just bought a blood ketone meter to give me that kick and I’m so excited! I used urine strips religiously for the longest time and it gave me motivation. Hoping this will too! Just need that push to not eat any keto sweets tbh lol.

I used to run in the morning
I was testing ketones before run and after I came back home.
I do not leave house and run right away, but I walk for around 7 minutes, run for 25-30 minutes and then walk back for around 5-6 minutes (I walk faster, as my body is already in higher performance state)
It my ketone level fall, if liver stays absolutely fine, but they will go up if I get pain because of overworked liver due to ketone production for physical activity)
Test yourself. Run long enough to trigger sharp pain in liver. It does need to be very painful, just sharp. When you get this you should gradually slow down and get rest of at least just walk. It will pass and it is perfectly fine. It is just signal that liver is working harder and it grows to accommodate extra body needs.

Paleomedicina Hungarian Doctors using the PKD to heal very severe diseases suggest go get the ketosis once a day at the end of the first meal right before the second one. That’s your best ketosis level moment. After approx 5 hrs. But they look for a deep ketosis. I prefer omad so I wait 5 hrs , before going to bed. After the sport/ activities it doesn’t make sense. Hope it helps.

Doing 18/6 on no sports day
Or 21/3 fasting on sports day
*Almost testing daily just before lunch
    Sport day around 3pm
    *No sport day at noon
Usely i test after sports which is not ideally what you said,
Start sport around 10:00 till 12:00
    Sauna after that till 14:00/14:30
So im eating around 14:30 till 14:30
My average ketone lvls are 0.8 during these times and blood sugar around 4.4
And when i do prolonged fasting 2 to 4 days, my ketone lvls can go up to 4,8
    Further more
Doing keto diet and eat healthy oils,
    Making my own ghee
Baking in oven my own nuts like
Almond pecan walnut and cashew nuts,
And ofcourse celtic salt for the minerals

  • @WizardNumberNext
    @WizardNumberNext 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    You are absolutely right
High ketone level does have no benefit
Even worse, too high ketone levels may be a sign you are doing something wrong or going downhill
I used to get even 7mmol/l ketones
It wasn't my best time to be honest
Now I am back around 1.5mmol/l to 4.5mmol/l
Test your ketones and glucose if you get dizzy. You may see unusually high ketone levels and unusually low glucose level.
You need to have both testers, perfectly as single device. Testing just ketones is less then half picture.

    Dr Dan
This was really helpful. I will now test just before lunch and before dinner. Been stumped by the dawn effect as I would test just at get up and was extraordinarily hi ( sometimes 120) what?? but the later measurement is between 86 and 100 so it does drop. You've got incredible insight to this process especially looking at used ketones that cannot be measured. All the best keep doging those carbs

I had that dawn reading happen when I tested my BLOOD glucose, and it bothers me because my GP wants fasting blood , as usual, for a HbA1c thinking I may be heading toward pre diabetes . I am reluctant to explain to her that I get info from the internet because she is very negative about that. I'm an RN . I think the post meal ketone checks WOULD be pretty helpful if you’re trying to keep insulin levels low. If you eat something that causes a big drop in ketones, you can deduce that you released a bigger amount of insulin, and maybe you might not want to eat that particular food.

Data geek here! My husband says I’m obsessed! I’ve been checking my ketones as soon as I get up! Usually not high ketones or glucose levels. Like so many here, I needed to lower my A1C and I accomplished that in 6 months, from 6.4 to 5.4. I feel great! I am going through a bout of kidney stones at the moment. I doubled up on my potassium and magnesium intake and started doing 45 minute bath soaks in Epsom Salts! It’s working. Any thoughts on the increased incidence of kidney stones on the Keto Diet! Keep up the great work! I’ve been binge watching you all morning!

SUMMARY: You should avoid to test your ketones because misleading reads in the next cases:
    - First thing in the morning.
    - Directly after a meal.
    - After exercise.
When should you test? - Before lunch or dinner.

    Hi Dr. Maggs,
I have enjoyed your videos just finding you today.
You mentioned that the ketones don't show as high after we become keto adapted!
is there a corrolation of lower ketones with the adaptation or does our body get lazy at producing them?
Is there a reason to add ketone type metabolizers to our diet to produce better health, have any studies been done to that combination or to prove or disprove the merits of BHB type nutritional adds?
I would love to see some kind of research that substantiates or shows to prove the lack of corrective measure if they are simply added to one's diet.
    I am a 70 year old learning and yes I am a geek...lol.
    Thanks,
    Dave

Understanding how blood sugars rise and fall during the day and how ketones only start to rise after that last meal blood sugar decline mean that it is not like taking your temperature. I've just started so I am curious to use Keytone stips to see if I am excreting Keytones or whether my body has adjusted to handling them. Once I know that the process is working I might want to monitor my data but the results speak for themselves; reduced weight levels and blood pressure readings.

Most of the time I can feel it, fat is the superior fuel. I also test to see the results of certain food.

Can I measure just one time a day, at the same time each day, to see a trend over time? Do I need to measure twice in a day? I'm just trying a keto diet for the first time, after fasting for 5 days and realizing the benefits of ketosis. I don't have medical needs to test so I was wondering if it might be good enough to test just once a day.

Dan... HEEEELLLLLPPPP MEEEEEE! I lost 50lbs doing Keto two years ago... Then I put on 30lbs during lockdown... I've tried to get back into Keto but my Keto blood monitor (Keto Mojo) is mostly registering Lo and sometimes (if I'm lucky) 0.01! My blood glucose levels are mostly between 95 and 100. I tried to kick it off with a rigid 72 hour water fast plus ACV and coffee, and 5 solid gym sessions and less than 25g carbs over last 3 days, but cant get those ketones up...! I have lost about 6lbs, but think that's mostly water weight. Starting to think that during lockdown I developed a terrible case of Insulin Resistance! Is it just case of patience? Losing faith here!

My ketones are now staying between 6 and 9.5 on breath. I did blood and it was 4.0 when the breath was 7.1. tested glucose 86. So my ketones high and glucose normal. My breath was exact match with blood when they were between 2-3. but once they raised real high on breath, the blood was different. Still high but not as high.

I did a blood test for ketones just to try it out, completely random and I had a value of 4.4 mmol/L, may have been while fasting though, I'm also early in my keto diet, my body is still adapting and maybe I've used too much fat, also exercising on a daily basis.
From what I've read, 4.4 mmol/L is a tad bit too high.

I hate to admit , as a retired nurse : I graze all day . Yesterday I tested neg at dawn,as you spoke about, and mod at 3pm. I don't feel like eating at dawn so should I test just before I have my first bit if food? I am finding your sites the best so far for me. Also, my GP wants to do a HbA1c but my fasting bood glucoses are higher than nonfasting. I'm pretty sure she wouldn't agree with your theory so what do I do about the her lab instruction to fast for HbA1c? It's a real worry.

Hello Dr Dan, quick question. I am doing strict carnivore diet with fat % in grams is between 50-70% daily with almost 0% carbs.
It has been more than 5 weeks since I do the above. I measure my ketones levels and most of the day is less than 0.5 mmol/L but when I have a fully fat meal in some cases it can go up to 0.9 mmol/L.. I am checking my glucose level at the same time and it ranges between 4.5 to 5.4 mmol/L. How do you explain that I am not seeing higher ketones levels. Thanks in advance.

How long after exercise can you test again? I tested 2 and 4 hrs after a back-bicep workout and my levels were ZERO?? I haven't eaten a single carb since 12 days so maybe I ain't in ketose yet?

Data Geek... !! i went keto in 2016-2017 and got great results... but now, i'm having a lot of trouble getting back into it, even though i'm using the same cookie cutter approach as back in 2016. it's been 3 months since i restarted, and i haven't lost a pound. so i'm starting to measure ketones in the blood and it's showing that I'm NOT in ketosis (even though ketostix urine results are almost always positive). very frustrating, but i think that this is the type of problem that may require ketone testing to overcome.

Were can I get a Ketone Blood test meter in the UK??? I've got a Blood Glucose meter from my Doctor, as I'm Diabetic, but they won't help me get a Keytone meter, so I have to buy a one for myself, but none seem to be available from my Pharmacist... Also Test strips and Lances. Thanks.

Question: which blood meter available in UK would you recommend? I want to give Keto diet a try for 3 months but also need to monitor for ketones as I am want to make sure I am in Ketosis and see what my performance on weekend club bike rides is like if doing Keto proper, rather than borderline and be in no mans land. I am 4 weeks down already and doing well. Urine strips so far ok but I know this will change.

We use the Abbott Freestyle Optium Neo, which accepts their glucose test strips as well as the ketone strips.
The glucose strips are much less expensive, and I now tend to only check my ketone levels only when my glucose level is 4mmol/L or less.
A low glucose ketone index allows an estimate of a low insulin level, and that is the object of the whole exercise.
The difficulty is that measuring insulin levels directly is much more difficult and expensive.
Patients with a diagnosis of cancer should be trying to achieve a glucose/ketone ratio of 1, which is likely to interfere with the metabolism of the cancer cells, which generally rely on fermentation and plentiful amounts of glucose.
To achieve this, Patients need the help of experienced professionals who fully understand the processes that are taking place and are able to closely monitor the situation.
