As an overweight guy who just began to go to the gym. Those heavyweight lifter with a muscle as big as my head is the kindest people I ever meet. They teach me to use the equipment, they encouraged me.
that's what kept me in the gym, seeing people like them knowing it was possible. One guy was hitting 625 on dead lift for reps, I was trying to hit 315, he showed me the proper form and I ended up being able to pull 405 with the proper from
THIS. The quote on quote most intimidating guys there, are usually the most helpful. Makes sense, cause they do it as a passion and they have a lot of knowledge.
you know I really hate it when I am new at something and there are a bunch of experts that can give good advice and help me become better that kind of resource to have around to help me achieve my goals is something that I just can't stand
Can you imagine the hell they would get that instead of a bodybuilder, they had a typical fat person poster with a caption that says "No fatties." There would be outrage.
The funny thing is that I realized that the image of intimidation is all in your head. I'm a REALLY unhealthy guy and only started working out recently. It's been extremely tough but the end goal is worth it. I realized that the body builders and heavyweight lifters are some of the nicest and most encouraging guys you can meet in the gym. They legitimately help anyone they see struggling and will go out of their way to give you a hand if you need it. This is across the board and I have NEVER met one with an opposite attitude.
Lifting is some seriously straining stuff. If one has the grit to bear through it, I can imagine they’re pretty reasonable people. A lot of these people might still be pricks outside of the gym, but inside the gym all that matters is weights. Everyone can relate to the pain of lifting. Help a bro out so eventually another bro will spot you.
Very true, started working out at a snap fitness because it was closer to my house. I usually go at 4 am and was super reserved at first because the only people who are there at 4 am are the super healthy dudes. I started asking them to spot me on some of my bench press stuff and I gotta say, they love the opportunity to talk to you about fitness stuff and help out. It's like having a free personal trainer every time I talk to them. Sure they grunt and drop weights, but who gives a shit really, they're the nicest people you'll meet and since they're already jacked they just want to help other people improve too.
Agreed. I've never seen an intimidating "beach bully" type in a gym. I know they're out there but I think Planet Fitness feeds the stereotype for obvious reasons. The biggest dudes and chix got that way for a reason. Might wanna listen to them
@@TracyA123 My favorite experience was I was trying to push my limit on the treadmill and this huge buff guy was running too. He saw I was struggling (but not at the point of giving out) and he just smiled, silently offered a fist bump and just said "Keep at it, you're doing great :) " I swear, that gave me the push I needed to see these session through. So thankful for those kinds of guys ❤❤❤
Real talk man. When I was hitting the gym pretty hard a few years ago, the majority of the super-fit people either didn't bother me whatsoever, or actually went out of their way to be friendly/helpful. Sure, you occasionally got some meathead asshole, but you're bound to find shitty people in any demographic Also, I'm surprised more people don't mention this, but a lot of body builders are actually pretty quiet and/or nerdy
Started going to the gym recently.. seeing other people in a good physique inspires me more. It's like showing you how in good shape you can become if you keep the hard work and push yourself to the limit.
At the last climbing gym I went to, there were a group of ripped guys that would always come in shirtless. I'd jokingly refer to them as the "hunk brigade"
I tried planet fitness a few years ago when I lived 5 minutes walking distance from one, and it was seriously such a let down as someone who was just starting out trying to be healthy and look good. The gym members and staff kinda sucked, and that whole cancelation of your membership process was extremely frustrating to the point of me actually consulting my attorney about it because they weren’t even open for me to cancel because of covid. Went to a new gym soon afterwards and shared my experience with their manager and they took me in like a sheltered dog.
I’ve had the opposite experience . I slam the weights and have a very good physical appearance just from going to planet. I think it depends what gym u go to cause the ones I go to they don’t give af 😂
Former employee here. I’ve never seen so many angry/aggressive/combative people in any gym in my life. I was “talked to” for requesting better foam rollers and a few kettlebells and resistance bands. Manager was over 300lbs and use to be the night janitor and treated employees like dogshit. Hope all these places go out of business.
Never Happens. I've been a member for almost a year and PF rocks the socks off of chuze or all time ... anytime. I don't think you've even been there enough to know whether or not they even push that lunk button... You have nothing better today, yesterday, or tomorrow.
Yo literally the most ironic thing about this is that gym bros as a whole are actually some of the coolest and most encouraging people I’ve ever met. They’re reinforcing a stereotype to trick self-conscious people into going there. That’s wild.
I used to be a trainer in a real gym. I've never seen a more encouraging group than muscle heads. We had a young regular with a neurological disease that could barely walk and he was unironically treated like a champion. Because he was. He had the eye of the tiger, and that's all anyone saw.
As a beginning lifter I agree, nobody will help you out and encourage you more than the biggest guy in the gym, honestly they're part of the reason I continue going.
Hey boss, what would you suggest are key details of a real gym? Making up my mind to get started on refurbishing this temple of mine and need to figure out which gym to go to and which gym to avoid.
Back in highschool, we had a weight “room” that students could work out in at lunch time Every now and then, i’d end up wandering in for one reason or another Without fail, every time someone audibly mentioned going for their personal best on a bench/deadlift/squat, the meathead types would stop what they’re doing, wait for the person to lift, and encourage them regardless of success And this group included one of the teachers who could easily bench 300 lbs (once saw him wander in, rep 315 7 times, talk to a few students about their workout regiments, and leave) a few players on the football team, and a pair of twins who are currently firefighters
@@GlareanLiebertine It's mostly a matter of deciding which features you want. If you are never going to use the pool, choose a gym that doesn't have one, or you will be paying for it in your membership fees. If lifting is your whole goal, a gym in a garage will do. If you can find the motivation you don't really even need a gym. Body weight exercises are fantastic. Pushups, pullups, jogging. I do 100 pushups every single day, and hike 500 feet of elevation, up and down, every day. Rain or shine, gym or no. That's the equivalent of climbing Mt Everest 6 times a year. I'm 55. I did 36,000 pushups last year. I plan to do them again this year. Yes, a bench press has adjustable weights. You will get more concentrated results at a gym. But the single most important factor in your gym is YOU. Now git out there and be the best you you can be!
I got banned from planet fitness just because I came in with a gallon of water jug, a hoody and shorts with converse on. They revoked my membership and yet they kept charging me. I went in again after a week and they still told me I was banned. I told them I wanted to cancel my membership since they were charging me but in order to do that I had to talk to their GM yet he was never around. So I had to call my bank and told them the situation and they ended up blocking all future charges from planet fitness. Worst gym ever.
@@ripmybrain9959 it's possible, I mean there was a dude who got kicked out because he had a gallon of water jug or something. I mean it's in this exact video, and it probably just depends on the type of managers and staff they got, looking at the comments.
I think it just depends like most of the workers said. I worked out at a planet fitness for almost a year and saw plenty of people breaking the rules and no one said anything as long as you’re not obnoxious or actually interfering with someone else’s workout. People did super sets, wore tank tops, lifted heavy, had muscle, etc. and weren’t kicked out.
Hell yeah dude, I work at a pf and none of us have any issue with the “banned” stuff. There’s really only a problem if you’re leaving a mess of garbage, or being weird to the staff/members. We only set off the alarm to let people know we’re about to close. I guess because of that, we definitely have a few members are aren’t really your stereotypical PF patrons. Now of course I wish we did have some free weights here but it isn’t the end of the world I suppose.
I’ve been going there for 10 years and never seen anybody get kicked out. And never heard the alarm go off and I always wear tank tops. And there’s like six of them in my area that I go to, depending on where I am.
I've worked out at one a few times too. Never had any issues. They are straight up about their rules. It's like even in a bodybuilding gym, they have rules to keep your shirt on, and dudes will take them off and get kicked out. I like to dead lift and squat. So you know what? I didn't enroll at PF. I went to another gym a mile away. Every ass hat in the world feels like they are being cheated at PF. They get offended. You know the rules, and you have a choice not to go there. And they SPECIFICALLY list why it's not for you. The ones that cause problems are just usually immature man children. How many immature children in the comments upset because of the rules PF lists. Don't go there? Enroll at another gym? Why are you going out of your way to hate and be offended by something that is completely optional and straight up who it's for?
I worked at the Planet Fitness version of a nightclub as a bouncer. They fired me for being too intimidating because I would cross my arms which is the comfiest way for me to stand. I was also a bit bigger than the average bouncer there. They wanted to create a friendly professional atmosphere. Mofos forgot they cater to drunk perverts all day while thinking they're hosting conferences or something.
Bodybuilders are the most supporting people in the gym because they know how tough it’s to start and concept of “non intimidating “ gym makes me laugh 😂
I take a weights class at my school and out of all the people in there, the biggest inspiration in the class is the smallest and skinniest guy because even though he's pretty boney, the fact that he's there is inspiring to me
Funny thing is that the nicest people that I have met in the gym are the scary big guys. there was this polish guy in our gym, we called him "Bear" because his name was too difficult. I remember meeting him the first time when I was a newbie at 14, he just came up to me and taught me how to use the machines, he calls every man "big man " or "big guy", the dude just radiates positive vibes.
Bro for real. I still remember the lessons that one bald guy with a tank top (he wasnt an employee or anything) randomly offered me for free when I was starting out in a local gym. I love gym bros I never learned his name and havent seen him since then. When my friends wanted to learn from me, I passed down the lessons my gymbro once imparted to me. I genuinely love the wholesomeness of gyms. Planet Fitness is a cancer on it.
Its because bodybuilding requires such a high amount of dedication and commitment. They understand struggles and obtaining goals. Most were all small at one point, probably bullied and eventually bettered themselves.
This made me be real thankful that my local Planet Fitness is one of the cool ones. I've never heard the Lunk Alarm go off, I've seen guys doing supersets, grunting, slaming weights, bringing gallon tumblers, wearing tank tops and never had a problem with anyone there. Probably has to do with the fact that its a small town, and they can't afford to run off people like that, but that's just my guess.
(LONG) I used to go to a local gym regularly when I was in high school. This gym was the place to be for powerlifters, up and coming bodybuilders, MMA fighters, and even just your average gym goer. I was 200lbs with almost no muscle, and was terrified to be there. Everyone was so much stronger than I was, and I felt so small and weak. But as I continued to go there regularly, pushing past that initial fear, I realized the looks I was getting from people were done out of curiosity rather than judgement. The more in shape I got, the more people would look my way. It got to the point that some of the powerlifters and MMA fighters that were usually there when I was started approaching me and telling me they've been seeing my progress and, essentially, that they were proud of me. Some of them would regularly spot me, or show me how to correct my form. They became my gym friends. They were the nicest people I ever encountered at a gym, and I was incredibly sad when the gym was put up for sale. Before that point, I made it down to 185lbs and packed on a bunch of muscle. I was stronger and healthier than I ever was in my life. Years later, I had fallen off my fitness routine and wanted to get back into it, but the cheapest and most accessible gym in my area was a Planet Fitness. Let me tell you, those were the worst several months I spent in a gym. The vibe was completely the opposite of the local gym. No sense of community, no one lending a helping hand, everyone only cared about themselves, and the looks I was getting were stained in pure judgement. The weight ranges and selections were piss poor, and I felt like I was walking on eggshells everywhere I went. Tried to cancel my membership only to find out it was $100+ to cancel before the yearly contract was up. I stopped going to the gym entirely because it was not a good environment to work out in, which is INCREDIBLY important to have. Went back to cancel when the yearly contract was done, only to find out I was a few days late and the contract was renewed, forcing me to pay that $100+ to cancel. I bit the bullet and paid, as a college student with a minimum wage job and probably no more than 300 bucks in my savings. Planet Fitness did the exact opposite of what a gym is supposed to do; motivate someone to get in shape and find a community of like minded individuals who help each other and promote a healthy lifestyle. Rant over lol.
As a foreigner i went to the Free Planet Fitness day during a trip to you know, have a gym session during my bussiness trip. i helped a old lady to fix her form because she would 100% hurt herself, no one said a thing to me but no one helped the poor lady in the next machine, so here i went again, basically my gym session was reduced to help someone because no one cared... I had just the impression that was a cultural thing because you know in the USA nothing is free, but you just described the normal gym culture here... so is just a Planet fitness issue, that is a shame.
The vast majority of people in the vast majority of gyms are super nice, and no one's judging you, simply put, you're just not that important. The looks you think you're getting are either imagined by you, incidental (you're in line of sight), or normal human behavior (people look at other people). And if you keep going, the looks you're getting are ones of recognition and appreciation/kudos. I'm a regular, and I see so many people, of all shapes and sizes, start coming in, and then disappear after a month or two. That's a look (of curiosity) you're definitely going to get: hmm, I wonder if this person will still be here in a month. It's not the "lunks" you gotta worry about, it's the jokers who pop in, do half-assed sets using crappy form, are on their phone the whole time, don't rerack weights properly, don't unload the bar and don't clean up after themselves. They are the true scourge of every gym.
@@Unpopularity I've heard that some PF locations aren't that bad. That's great! Unfortunately for me, I didn't have the same experience. I guess maybe I was used to a more community-based gym culture, it helped me a lot with my self-esteem and self-perception to know that the huge dudes I was scared of at the local gym I went to were secretly rooting for me lol. My time at PF was quite the opposite. I didn't feel welcome at all. And the cancellation fees were pretty ridiculous imo. Must have been a bad location. I'm now a member at another local gym with a similar "community" feel, but haven't been able to go due to a recent injury. I'm planning on going back soon.
As soon as I heard a story on the news about a girl literally getting kicked out of Planet Fitness for being "too fit" and thus looking too intimidating for the other gym goers that day, I was just dumbfounded, and it made me glad that I had cancelled my monthly membership with the one in my area about 2 years prior. Planet Fitness is a real piece of work.
right. they immediately call it intimidating when most people see that as inspiration to whats possible. vast majority of gym goers want to help the new guy. we love seeing new people showing motivation to turn themselves around. planet fitness's model is all about keeping insecure people insecure and feeding them pizza and bagels to make sure they keep coming.
Oh man, planet fitness is actually perfect as is. I started working out heavily overweight, no muscles. Did about about two year in planet fitness, until i started getting problems, being approached and eventually kicked out for 'intimidation'. I take this as a sign of progress, one i couldnt see myself
being kicked out of planet fitness for "intimidation" should be considered a great achievement for anyone, hell they should probably write physical letters or certificates to those whose memberships got cancelled over breaking the whole "intimidation" code too much as a wall hanging to show how much of a bodybuilder you are
I was wondering what would happen if they had a regular member who DID make progress and at what point does that long-time member start getting kicked out. I mean, good for you, I guess bc works as advertised, but also wtf!?
I've gone to Planet Fitness on and off for years and never heard the Lunk Alarm used. Also never seen anyone get dressed coded or anyone get told that they're lifting too heavy. Seems like certain facilities go overboard but no point complain when you know what you're getting into. Several other options for gyms.
My favourite part of all this is most people don't realise the Lunk alarm is MANUAL. Someone has to trigger it, and oftentimes it's a petty employee or some entitled person that just wants you out of there. It's super toxic and bad.
This is what people think. I’ve only ever seen it go off as a joke, nobody actually cares about it. To think that someone actually sets it off in a serious manner is comical to me
you can look up the blueprints of the alarm right now, no automated system b/c it's insanely more expensive than it looks (480,000 for you banker boys and girls). There is literally an orange button under the representee desk as they see their customers, which are badly placed. waste of money, that air siren is. just educated the beginners WITH the pros?!
My last gym was small, and I found myself just using mats and hand weights more and more. I quickly realized that I could save a lot of money just by doing the same thing at home. The key is find something you like, and keep practicing until you get better and stronger.
for years I did kickboxing at a gym on the other side of town. After the government lockdowns I bought a house with a basement. I put up a sparing mat and some bags and it's great. I love punching my friends in the face
Yes, I have some weights and a mat at home .... was useful when the gyms closed in the pandemic. But going out helps segregate gym as a "thing" that one does a few times a week, where if it's just going to the basement it's too easy to meld into other things and more and more be skipped.
Faulting people who are working hard because they make people insecure or intimidated is really a bad message. It should be an inspiration for everyone to see another person trying to get fit to better their health, endurance, stamina, etc, and say to themselves that "I can become stronger and healthier too" instead of being insecure.
I dont even think that’s the issue….. people have always had this made up scenario where the hot people have to make themselves lesser for the unconventionals which… reeks of bs.
Honestly, the membership is worth it. Just go into the gym during Free Pizza Mondays, take a whole stack of pizzas, and leave. Then come to an entirely different gym on Free Bagel Tuesdays and take a whole box. $10 a month for pizza and bagels sounds pretty good to me.
1:34 nah. you can get stronger. Heavy emphasis on Eccentric loading (increase in muscle size/strength; high demand of muscle recruitment; minimize the risk of injuries). I think if you go to PF, you gotta be creative. Other gyms are big upgrades, just depends what type of individual you are, even how much you want to invest.
While we're at it, don't forget to hit the gym guys, you'll never regret it. Nobody is here to judge. Everyone is here to make gains in one way or another, and everyone has to start somewhere, don't hesitate to ask people about stuff you don't know about or if you need help with anything, everyone is willing to help !
As someone who started going to the gym eight months ago I can confirm those "intimidating" jacked dudes are actually essential for your own safety inside a gym. They prevented me multiple times from destroying my lower back by kindly correcting my technique while working out.
As someone that has worked out for 2 years, going to planet fitness was like entering through a gulag, one time I was attempting to dead lift and I was kicked out because of “intimidating everyone” never go to planet fitness
Ephesians 6:10-18 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. The bible is no old book. You have to really let Christ open your eyes; to see the world in shambles. Many people say it's a religion to lock up people in chains, and say it's a rule book.. why? Because people hate hearing the truth, it hurts their flesh, it's hurts their pride, it's exposes on what things have they done..people love this world so much, s*x, money, power, women, supercars.. things of this world. Still trying to find something that can fill that emptiness in your heart. You can't find that in this world.. only in Christ, the bible is no chains, it's a chainbreaker. Breaking your sins into pieces... Repent now, and turn back to the true Lord only.. God bless.😢😢
I had one like that too when I started 2 years ago, guy would give me tips and tricks. We had a similar mindset on research too. It's nice to pass that on.

This makes me appreciate my PF even more. Lunk alarm is unplugged, no dress code, no pizza or bagels, lots of heavy lifters slamming weights. I got lucky.
I've been to one with the lunk alarm but the employees just ignored it. They were clean and decent but it doesn't have the dumbbells that are heavy enough.
I canceled my membership there a few months ago, only because I stopped going out of laziness. When I told them I wanted to cancel, the 5 people there literally all looked at me with a confused/shocked look. I felt like I was doing something wrong lol. It was weird
@@dayinthegrind688 you watch this entire video and this is the comment reply you come up with. Not commending him on canceling his membership at this horrible gym. God you’re a moron, people on the internet make me laugh. Funniest part was you thought you were doing something by calling him lazy. Lmfao, shameful.
As a former staff member at a Planet Fitness based in Australia, I took a rather different approach. Being a devout gym junkie and an intermediate lifter, I always sought to welcome everyone and even the powerlifters and bodybuilders (unwanted according to policy) whom didn’t want to cause trouble and just train. Every tour I’d lead, I ensured I got to know the person, have a laugh, ask them questions and if I knew they were a lifter, as a form of courtesy, I’d tell them that we don’t have deadlifting platforms, squat racks, barbells to perform your military, or bench and the fact that our dumbbells are maxed out at 34kg (75lbs). I’d always walk around the gym and chat to anyone and everyone in between sets and also assist with explaining and demonstrating how a machine is used, and to also spot people on the smith machines if they needed a push. I loved watching all the new members become more confident and comfortable over time, and seeing their growth and muscle gain/weight loss. It was the best parts of being on the job. I only ever used the lunk alarm to call my colleague (when they’re on the gym floor) and also just for a laugh. I never rung the alarm for more than .5 of a second because I know that alarm is ridiculously loud. If there was someone seriously smashing weights or the clanging of weights from the cable towers (obnoxious and rings throughout the gym, especially when it ain’t heavy) I would come up to them when they’re off set, and speak to them in a manner which is respectful, and at the bare minimum, humane. I’d never kick them out, or dish out warnings, I’d say just be wary and try your best not to slam weights as you may impact those around you (it is very startling at times). It was a fun job, I didn’t necessarily believe in the philosophy of planet fitness, but I’d still enforce the rules, just very lightly as I wanted everyone to focus on themselves and train hard. Funny part is, the pizza and muffin days, I’d force people not to go anywhere near them and at times, would stand at the bench the food is on, and just say, “nothing to see here keep walking” and just laugh about it. I hated this idea of dishing out processed foods and sugars to have a fun, comfortable environment. I mean, I do like that, but the best way to impose this idea is by supporting those who come in, help them in their journey, and lastly, don’t feed them shit food which only impedes their journey and progression. Fun job, but trust me, not all employees are harsh or all planet fitness gyms the same.
Sounds pretty much like the PF I go to right now. It’s operated by mostly mid-20s kids who keep the place very clean and remember your name. Been nothing but a good experience for me so far. It’s definitely heavy on the cardio equipment (probably 60% of the gym floor and never about 25% capacity) but I’m happy with it overall.
I was contemplating joining planet fitness. BUT, after numerous reports and complaints about planet fitness's rules and policies, I have come to a decision. I decided, I WON'T
i once heard about a planet fitness that closed because "the patrons were malicious towards staff" yet the reality was it was next to a care home and 90% of the patrons were 80 year olds who wanted to keep fit, and they kept kicking them out because "thats not the image of planet fitness"
the one near my house is all teenagers (male and female) and soccer moms....maybe that's the image they are going for....the only men over 30 are those whose doctors told them they need to lose weight and are just there to appease their wives and not really interested in doing any serious training....
@@dragonchr15 a small one opened up in my hometown, it closed after a week because the only people using it were the local fisherman, and they kept getting kicked out for smelling like fish
That's good. I wish everyone felt that way. I personally am not in elite shape but I have been told I intimidated someone because they saw me leg press over 800lbs. They threatened to cancel my membership if I did it again. It was just a leg press, not even a squat or deadlift.
Can’t agree more. I’m not gay in anyway lol but seeing big dudes lifting massive weight just makes me think “I can’t wait until I myself look like that! It’s extremely encouraging for me to keep pushing myself to do better. If I was working out with a bunch of fat people then that would just be depressing af. That’s why I watch Sam Sulek too. To stay encouraged
@@applememes5372 the leg press is one of the easiest leg exercises you can do. And due to the angle of the sled on the rails you only really lift part of the weight. An 800lb squat on the other hand is a totally different thing.
I'm not an in shape person, but I've been to several gyms. Each time I see a body builder or someone who is extremely built, they always act extremely kind and try to hype people up because they seem like they actually get excited to see people better themselves. Bodybuilders shouldn't be shamed, they're the reason why people get hyped up for working out.
@@Ass794 I mean you can be in a really great shape and still be embarrassed, there’s always going to be a bigger fish out there, or maybe that Jim is one minute away from their house where as the next closest gym is 40 minutes away
I think a welcoming atmosphere is important for most gyms, mine has 10 disabled parking bays and they’re full every time. I also have some chronic health issues and don’t want to be judged for taking a machine and not doing as much as someone more healthy (ie; walking versus running when it’s busy) and luckily it’s completely chill. I also think it’s more inclusive to have old and young, super muscular and average people working together side by side. Very different people with a common interest is quite kumbayah, I like it.
I’ve heard about the lunk alarm being a novelty thing, but as someone who gets startled by loud alarms and sudden noises, I’d rather not take that chance. That’s infinitely worse than someone dropping weights or even grunting because those are noises I expect to hear in a gym.
The irony behind this all is people who are serious weightlifters and bodybuilders are ALWAYS the people who will come to your aid, show you the right way to do things, give you tips, and help you out. They were once a beginner to and love seeing others get better.
I have never seen a company that judged others so badly. And their motto is “Judgment Free”. The lack of self awareness is amazing. These days a dude with big muscles minding his business is unacceptable but it’s ok for 100 weak (physically and mentally) people to bully and cancel him to make themselves feel strong.
You had to pivot to “cancel culture…” Frankly, yes, it is ok for a private business to refuse service to anyone. PF’s way of going about it is stupid. Even dumber is someone whining about being “canceled” when there’s a half-dozen other gyms you could go to. Whiner…
I had a planet fitness membership because it was on my way to work and it was 10 dollars a month. It was pretty chill and there was plenty of lifting equipment. I actually gained a lot of muscle there. I did big lifts and grunting at times. I was a member for 2 years and never once heard an alarm. I think the alarm was just to add to the theme of their overall massaging. There were a lot of people who only showed up on days that they had food lol
I'm glad everyone sees through them now. It's crazy to imagine calling yourself "judgement free" while shunning people for being too fit, in a gym of all places lol
@c spahn Idk man, the gym bros at my gym are actually some of the most chill dudes I've heard speak. Sure obnoxiously loud, but I'll take obnoxious grunting and overexertion then being judged for going to a gym. and I say this as an overweight person going to the gym to lose weight
I'm sorry this happened to you. Planet Fitness needs to be used and shutdown and if people don't like pushing their limits to achieve an optimal workout, then the staff and owner are insecure with themselves and shouldn't never be allowed to run a gym.
I laughed hard when he said “it’s like having an AA meeting at a bar” because in my town there was a bar that went out of business after 3 years and now it’s the only place that hosts AA meetings. And for when the meetings take place it functions like a bar just with nonalcoholic drinks
There's a couple bars in a town near me that have weekly AA meetings. Except they make no issue about selling beer. Literally everyone at the meeting is drinking beer, and still talking about how hard it's been.... quitting alcohol.... with a beer in their hand st the same time..... Fucking baffles me lol
Honestly, that does sound pretty good. Do they do the virgin versions of mixed drinks, or is that too risky? I never had one of those flavored mixed drinks that didn't taste bad, it was always just the one liquor and the one soda that taste awful.
It has to be a specific gym…the one i go to doesnt serve pizza or donuts; doesn’t have that standing workout thingy, i think i heard the lunk alarm go off once…i have seen people bring in water bottles of all sizes and wear what ever feels comfortable and everyone does their own thing. Staff is kind and friendly and willing to help in any way they can. $10 a month is cheap and if you choose to not step foot in after getting membership then thats on you…canceling is also easy just go in on a day you are running errands and cancel not a huge deal
As mentioned in the video, I think it just depends on the location you go to. I’ve been going to one close to me for over a year now. Never heard a lunk alarm, never got thrown out for wearing a tank top or having a huge water bottle, never been bothered by the staff. Lost 80lbs and put on muscle. If you have a good location there’s nothing wrong with Planet Fitness especially when all the other gyms charge an arm and a leg for a membership.
Agreed I went as a guest for the first time this week and I saw people walking around in basically everything some people were saying you weren't allowed to, plus my water bottle was too big for the cup holder on the eliptical. Didn't have any issues and I was there for like an hour.
As a former pro weight lifter in college. Planet Fitness was my go too gym for most of my training lmao. It's cheap, affordable, has a decent selection of weights and the biggest issue I had was theres no space for dead lifting, and not enough benches for people wanting to lift. Everything was well maintained and great. People judge Planet Fitness because A. they have a shitty club near them (this is true for ALL gyms it doesnt matter where you go, a shit gym is a shit gym) B. they don't understand that you dont HAVE to eat the free pizza they give out OR drink the soda's they have there C. aren't looking to get fit and believe everything everyone tells them, so a bunch of guys making a youtube video being assholes in the gym somehow means it's a bad place to be.
Most of the hate you see is from people who have never been to planet fitness and don’t know the “rules” are mostly just marketing and not actually rules, or are fitness influencers who purposefully went in to make a spectacle of themselves so they could get kicked out for content
Its incredible how Sunny makes every video extremely consistent in tone and style but the wildly different topics make each feel amazingly unique and well informed. What a gift.
Most people who are showing obvious signs of sticking it out for more than, say, six months are passionate about it and are happy to share that passion. They've all been beginners and whilst there are obviously douchebags in most crowds, these will be the minority. As long as you respect their desire to get their own sets in, most people would be happy to share.
This is the way. Hell one time I was struggling to hit my PR on the bench press (I'm still overweight, but slowly going down) at 2 plates each side. Guy next to me who was hitting 4 plates like it was nothing saw me struggling and just starts yellin at me "You got this, push push!" Was enough motivation to finally hit my PR that day. Gotta say I love my gym.
During Covid, we tried to cancel our membership, but it took nearly a year and we had to pay the entire time. We looked into going back, but the loopholes they wanted us to jump through were insanely stupid. Nevermind. I will find another gym later.
@@thirtythree504 this is the easiest way, that's why i usually enroll online using virtual cards :)) worst case i don't even have to pay for the replacement
@@deezy2k1 i did this too. can confirm had no additional charges and the payment doesnt go through. i still see them try every month tho, 3 years later
The planet fitness near me was a massive two floor gym that was made up of 80% cardio machines that were hardly ever in use. Meanwhile the machines and “free weights” (just dumbbells) almost always had lines.
Unfortunately, where I live it's the only gym that's close, but luckily the one I go to is pretty chill. The one I used to go to closed and it was really nice. The lack of a squat/deadlift rack is pretty frustrating though.
This man adds such a thin layer of well-paced and presented sugar on top of the dumpster fires he covers and it is pure bliss. One of the only ‘tubers I genuinely want to keep up with.
You cannot even cancel your membership unless you physically go in there with zero acceptions. A buddy of mine blocked them from charging his account though his bank and they ended up suing him. Shits crazy
I remember trying to cancel my mother's membership. We called the gym they told us we had to call some specific number. We called that number and they said we had to call the gym. My father got aggravated, called the gym, and said he's not dealing with the round about, cancel the membership or he's contacting the bank, the BBB, and his legal advisor.
No. No. No. Let me give you the full story about what you're trying to say. When you're trying to cancel a gym membership you can't just cancel it and that's it. You usually have to pay another month's worth. Most people know this but they forget. Then what happens is they try to fight that and what happens is is you're given the number to corporate. You probably asked for it yourself. So you called them and they told you they cannot cancel the account and that you have to go or call the gym. So nice try with your story but this is what Bread left out between the lines.
I cancelled my membership in person with no difficulty. Why make problems for yourself when you are told that you have to cancel in person? Anyway, I have since rejoined. I cancelled because I was not motivated enough to go to the gym. Now I am a member again.
I went to a lot of gym over the years and i have never been judged by anyone most gym goers are really supportive and when i started out some helped me with form and choosing exercises never had a bad experience
I have really bad social anxiety, but I've never been harassed at the gym. The only discomfort comes from myself and like, working up the nerve to ask when someone will be done with something lol
started going to the gym this week. idk what people you have at yours but mine are pretty nice. Since i swim alot i do some weight machines to warm up. This dude that was doing over 200 Leg press and since the other machine just got someone on it. I asked if i could do a set and he was very nice and wiped the machine down and said "No problem man, ask me if you need a spot, im gonna go on the leg extension machine till your done" Man was a chad built way more than me but let me take the machine no prob and even offered to spot me if i had some trouble. Cool dude so just dont be afraid of some gym goers you all go there to workout which is nice. sure you might encounter a asshole sometimes but honestly knowing your in a good environment really helps your mindset when working out
I usually encounter people twice my size at the gym but not one person was even remotely rude (except one thin angry Arab dude who didn't know English) They happily offer to alternate sets which helps you make sure you're taking proper rest. Made a few friends there too Nobody judged me but I had a few experienced guys correct me on my form which definitely helped
I’ve worked out at my local Planet Fitness for 3 years. I can confirm that it really depends on which one you go to. My local PF is very opened towards anyone, regardless of tank tops, short shorts, political t-shirts, etc. The workers are pretty good with keeping the “judgement free” motto at heart. But I’ve heard terrible stories of lack of acceptance in the second closest one to me. The lunk alarm at my local PF has mostly went off when it was close to closing time on weekends.
@@ConnorHammond I love the stark contrast between america and the rest of the world. In america political t-shirts aren't banned at least from what I've observed. In any other place, the UK for instance, politics and football colours will get you kicked out of most establishments because they're almost guaranteed to start a fight.
So from what I understand… Planet Fitness is a gym that doesn’t want you to get stronger at the gym… Imagine kicking out the only people in the gym that are actually experienced and can help less experienced people
The planet fitness I go to is full of ripped people, whenever I'm resting from my set I watch them and after they're done with their weights I try them out, and I never heard anything bad about planet fitness until this video
I’ve been going to my local PF for a few years now. Never have had a problem with lunk alarms, rude staff or pizza. It’s actually been quite the opposite experience- the staff at my gym have been incredibly friendly and encouraging. I think it’s definitely a location based issue
I’m in Canada and have been to two PF before. Neither had any problems. The staff are always kind and in the one I go to now, they joke around or talk with the people there. There are men and women who use the weights, lots are pretty muscular and I see them often (they aren’t just being kicked out). Lunk alarm never used. So far never seen issue with anything.
I can’t wrap my head around the fact that something like the Lunk Alarm even exist. What does it mean that if someone actually WORKS OUT in a GYM a super loud siren starts going out startling everyone?! It’s insane!!!
I think it’s stupid but planet fitness is supposed to be a causal gym for people who are just starting to get in shape so I understand and they only really use it if someone is screaming
my dad got kicked from the gym because he was doing a set and i was watching him but then when i was going to go next to him i tripped and landed on my hand, it wasnt serious though but my dad still rushed me to the bathrooms so i could put cold water over it. when we came back we got kicked out for "Running and disrupting peoples sets" 💀💀
It isn't the bodybuilders who create a negative atmosphere in a gym, it's the people who don't re-rack their weights, don't clean after themselves, take an adsurd amount of time to finish their sets because they're talking or on their phones. People who take training seriously tend to treat the gym like a sanctuary
TOtal bs. Most of the lunks i see scream at the top of their lungs trying to ":hiit the big one" You know damn well they do this shit and it's fucking annoying. It's just not called for. Yes, those people you spoke of are tricks, but can't rule out the obvious.
R'amen! Have some basic gym etiquette (and don't stare at other people) and everyone should be just fine. It's the mess and phone usage that make me nuts (and hogging multiple machines in between texts). At most I've gone between two machines at a time and ONLY when it's not very busy and I still do them quick as possible. Texting is never a thing in the gym for me--that's MY time and whatever it is can wait, because I don't want to take up the space someone else might need soon.
This is fascinating. The PF I used to train at was super chill. Never heard the lunk alarm, never saw anyone get kicked out (people literally violating the “gymtimidation” rules were never confronted) and staff were genuinely nice. The only times I saw confrontation were people slamming weights. 1 on a lat pull down and 2 dropping dumbbells from standing shoulder press position. EVEN THEN, the staff just calmly asked “hey, please respect the equipment” and everyone was cool.
Never in my life, in all my time going to the gym, did I consider myself "intimidated" by someone stronger than me or someone exerting themselves. It just doesn't click with me at all.
why does dropping a pen cause the lunk alarm to go off then? ive been to several locations to test if it still happens after that video of it went viral like 4 years back now, and all of them went off after i 'accidentally' dropped the pen i brought from home to mark down how many times ive done an exercise.
@@notjimpickens7928 wdym by pen? You don't mean a regular pen do you? If that would set off the alarm, I presume by falling to the floor, I'd expect footsteps to set off the alarm as well. Unless the system is set up such that it won't set off after a certain pressure/vibration or whatever it is they're doing the measurement with, which would create too many false posirive
I remember I switched bank accounts while I was signed up for planet fitness a few years back, I also happened to work next door. They actually would harass me to update my payment info daily. Finally I asked the lady why not just cancel it, and she's like "you can't just cancel like that, there's a process". And I'm like no, it's simple just cancel my membership. Then she said I'm never allowed back and I shrugged and said fine.
Making it hard to cancel is irritating but you can't complain about them wanting you to change to your active Bank account. You have to pay for your membership, that's not weird.
I've never felt more judged in my life than I felt when I was going to Planet Fitness. Joined a kickboxing gym about a year later and I've been loving it ever since.
It must be based on either location, your own insecurities, or exaggerated because I saw zero problems there for the 8 years I went there and only positive vibes. I heard the "lunk" alarm maybe 3 times, and it's when they are ridiculously slamming weights. It makes a 1-second sound saying, "chill the fk out dude" and isn't directed at anyone and probably tells them, "Maybe I should stop acting like I'm some tough guy slamming 145lb weights down" and they do stop. Membership was $12 btw. $20 if you want the tanning bed. 🤷♂ Could have changed now that inflation is high as fk. Great prices.
The Lunk alarm is actually a warning that extreme gains are in your area. The only people that ruin a workout for me are the Tiktok and Instagram "influencers" that just hang out on benches, and film themselves doing lousy half reps.
Sometimes I wanna record myself to show the progress I’ve made (put on 20 pounds from being a twig) but every time I pull out my phone my brain goes “TikTok moment” and I put it away lmao
@@AbnAngelo7677 exactly, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made from casually working out (not focused on diet) for a year or so but all of these egotistical 12 year olds who will diminish you over anything can make it hard to find the confidence to post something like that
I have been working out for 15 years, 5 days a week, I have been to many gyms, some like LA Fitness don’t fix broken equipment for weeks and months. Others, are filthy dirty and never cleaned. PF, is clean, machines always work, however, the ppl who work out there are mostly newbies with no real understanding how it works. The other day, I had a women who sees me using The Smith Machine, come up to me and tell me “ you’ve been on the machine too long, I need to use it!” I told her I’m not finished, thinking it would enough of an explanation and she than stands over me, demanding I leave. I’m a polite man, but, don’t get in my way. Most of the ppl don’t get it, they don’t rack their weights and the energy level sucks. But, it’s close by and I use the gym for what it’s worth and leave after 1.5 hours. If you’re experienced, do yourself a favor, do your thing and get out.
The thing is. When I see other people pushing themselves, it makes me more determined to push myself. It’s so hypocritical for them to shame judging but proceeds to judge people for being “too fit”
@@chad3984 I found most people don't actually judge in gyms. for the most part, people stick to themselves or are very polite. it's the reputation that people at the gym are judgmental but in reality it's a really miniscule number of douchebags and often they get ignored or pushed aside. this is at least from my experience, it might be completely different at some gyms.
@@halfknight2310 i dont think people will go up to people and laugh at them. But they probably looking at them. But even people don't judge its the belief people will judge thats the issue
That’s exactly my thinking, I feel inspired seeing people push themselves. But I guess if you walk around feeling sorry for yourself seeing people push themselves just gives you more ammunition to feel even worse (which lowkey I feel is what they want to feel in the first place)
@@chad3984 right but by that logic people can be judging you anywhere, not just in the gym. Plus even if someone is judging you its likely a fleeting though that reflects their mentality. It has nothing to with you ya know? All I’m saying is it’s silly to let the opinions of others, that you are really assuming they have in the first place, stop you from going to the gym.
I’ve been to multiple gyms when I was slightly underweight and plenty now that I am slightly overweight. I have not once ever had someone “intimidate” me, make fun of me, or tell me I’m causing issues. Nobody at the gym gives a fuck what you’re doing as long as you are respectful and keep to yourself.
This is it, 99% of time people don't care about what you do, if they look most likely they're checking out if you're leaving the machine or they have accidentally put the eyes on you during set break. Occasionally I look at the girls because their outfit caught my eye and want to ask where can i buy it 😂I can understand the fear tho, people can be very judgmental outside of the gym towards people who look different so it's easy to have that fear in their head. I catch myself too thinking sometimes that I don't belong in the gym however, keep in mind that going and showing is the best you can do for your health (if you enjoy strength workout).
Exactly. Just practice proper gym etiquette and most people will not judge or bother you. Some might offer tips if you do something wrong so that you don't hurt your back but that never bothered me I appreciated it.
My experience has always been that most (keyword most) of those huge guys who look very intimidating tend to be the nicest people ever. Like this one guy with forearms bigger than my thighs, bald and with tattoos from his scalp to his fingertips. Dude was just a kind man, worried about raising his daughter and would gladly help out anyone, while never giving unsolicited advice. The worst people in a gym tends to be the younger ones who have just had a taste of gains/confidence and think they own the world now.
I had a friend who’s really into building muscle and bulking up, he was asked to not go to his schools gym by the staff because he was “intimidating others”. Now I’m not the most confident person out there, but telling other people to go away because their mere existence makes you feel insecure is just so narcissistic; everyone has to conform to how you feel. I didn’t know it was a thing elsewhere, especially not in a chain of gyms (I do my exercise outdoors; I hate gyms).
As a beginner I started working out at Axiom and I couldn't imagine working at PF. The noises made by other people make me less anxious about whatever it is that I'm doing. Seeing huge people pushing crazy loads inspires me to do better so that I can be like them someday. A wise man once said to always surround yourself with people better than you. To all my fit gym bros out there y'all are the best and I appreciate you. Sincerely, a skinny bastard
@@jurbagarga1410 To me, the moment when you grunt, growl, rasp and fight to get that last rasp out is something admirable. You could have dropped sooner and have done good work, but to muster the will to pull one more through the strain, to me is peak human spirit. That and, to be honest, where the hell is a guy supposed to be loud nowadays?
Damn, this makes me grateful for the planet fitness around my area. Going there with tank tops, dropping weights during PRs, and bringing big ass water bottles and not hearing a single word from the people there. In fact, they’re all pretty chill with me and always ask about what I’m working on, my plans for the day, etc.
Yeah this is all new to me as well: there’s a planet fitness near me and from my time there, there were no such dress codes and I never heard the alarm go off. It’s just bizarre and new to me that other planet fitness locations do that.
I belonged to one in Iowa, and it was so chill. None of this sounds remotely familiar to my experience, and they even had body builders there, too. *shrugs*
Yeah. Same with the two I've frequented (one in a state down south, and one in Washington D.C). I've never witnessed anything weird or staff going loco about anything...I feel like people just hate on it because it's inexpensive; it's almost as if the expensive chain gyms started these rumors and such.
I've never been to a PF. If I had heard this story from anyone else, I would have thought it was fake. I am speechless about how this actually is a thing.
Don't go by this video, seriously. This video is the most judgemental thing I've seen on youtube. Tour one for yourself, see what the vibe feels like, how people are dressed. Mine, talks, gallon jugs, skimpy tights, booty shorts, bras, grunting, weight dropping, anything goes. No Pizza and Bagel days. Staff is chill, they are not going to cause trouble. This guy cherry picked old clips from days gone by and edited a hatchet piece together.
@@Dannysoutherner yeah I’m sure it depends on the location but the one I go to has been totally fine. 24 hours, never heard the alarm go off, everybody seems totally chill or just minding their own business really. I’m pretty shocked at the hate planet fitness gets when it’s a pretty great option for anyone trying to get started at the gym. $10 a month and you can cancel anytime with no fee. If you start making it a habit and want to train with free weights more, you can just cancel and start going to a different gym.
@@Dannysoutherner I can attest to this. The stories that people tell about how horrible PF is are I think 99% fake. It's not particularly different than other gyms, if you get kicked out of planet fitness most of the time you probably would have been kicked out of any other gym.
Yeah not really a thing in the way the video presents. I have been 2 4 different gyms, YMCA, a private gym at a former workplace, a local franchise that I cannot name without doxing myself and planet fitness. Planet fitness is hands down the best one I have been to. I have used 2 different locations for PF, both are great. Staff do not want to bother you, they just want to get paid and go home. Never heard a lunk alarm. I drop weights and grunt 4 days a week and don't get bothered. Some lifters only ever wear jeans and don't get bothered. The only real complaint is that they lack freeweights. Also, one of the locations has better smith machines as they come down straight instead of at an angle which makes them much more comfortable for squatting and deadlifting. Also, never seen them get mad at a leg press no matter how many plates we load. My brother in particular loads 4 plates minimum on leg press, but has loaded up to 6 and nobody cares. Like anywhere else, the majority of people have no motivation to bother you unless you're actually a problem. And if you do manage to have a bad experience, you can likely just go to another location and have no problems.
@@Dannysoutherner You're completely right. I worked out at planet fitness for several months and never had any of the issues this guy listed in the video. No one ever pulls the lunk alarm, the dress code is not enforced, and there are no pizza mondays or bagel tuesdays. Just a bunch of people going to the gym to get a workout. The only reason I left the gym is because they don't have any squat/deadlift racks, or bench press areas. Only the smith machine like the video said. That's the one true thing in this video lol.
So glad the Planet Fitness I go to isn't like this. We have body builders and heavy lifters come in a lot, and everyone there is super nice. Once, I hit 8 miles on a treadmill and threw my arms up in celebration. Everyone clapped and cheered, it was so nice.
The hypocrisy of the lunk alarm being sounded when someone is judged to be a lunk, and a lunk is defined in part as “someone who judges”, can’t possibly be an accident. I refuse to believe anyone lacks introspection to that degree.
its so dumb. I worked at planet for a few years at multiple locations during college and the only time i EVER used it was when we were closing in 5 minutes as a quick warning to patrons. (And one time when no one was there I did let it run at full blast for a minute out of curiosity to see how lout it was loolol)
While working a different gym, I constantly had new members complain to me about the rules saying “ well it wasn’t a rule at planet fitness” or “I always did this at Planet Fitness, so what’s wrong with me doing it here?” So to hear how different Planet fitness really is to other gyms just makes me realize how little experience those new members really had inside actual gyms.😂🙄
Out of curiosity, what rules did that gym have that Planet Fitness didn't? There's no Planet Fitness where I live, but this video makes it sound like Planet Fitness has far more ridiculous rules than any other gym would have...
This video is full of super biased takes “we don’t want your kind here” if you actually believe someone said that then wow. These people got kicked out for something else and are changing their story because they are spiteful
@@rbnzo25 it’s 100% that. You can’t throw a rock on Instagram without hitting a lifter that fits the “type” that PF supposedly doesn’t want and yet they still work out at their local PF with no issues.
"NOOOO!!! Why are they FORCING me to use this gym?!?" I go by a Planet Fitness damn near every day and the people coming out of there look like professional athletes.
I'm a fat dude and I always have been (my bad, to be fair) but I've been managing my shit eating habits for a few months and I decided to hit the gym alongside that. I've got good mates but none of them are really willing to commit to buddying up so I've been doing it alone, and something that really surprised me was just how warm, accommodating and genuinely thoughtful the big guys at my gym are. Whether it was offering help (not flogging off unsolicited comments) or shouting a bottle of water or just encouraging me to show up and do the work, they're just solid guys who couldn't care less that some chubby kid is hitting arms next to them like a fish out of water- as a matter of fact, they're all for it. Sure, some people can be pricks, but the power of putting yourself out there and stoking your drive to improve is invaluable.
I feel like the problem with making a gym for beginners only is that your business model is inevitably going to alienate your older clientele before long.
I think thats sort of the point. As a franchise gym they cant compete for quality for longterm memebers next to a local one. Seems like a decent place for people who either just want to try the gym or get into it.
That's quite literally the point of their business model. They want to create a place where fat people can just do cardio to burn calories without having to see already fit people working to become fitter. They work with the psychology of insecurity and it's clearly making them money.
@@plainguy3567 At some point, a gym can't be responsible for overweight people's mental battles with food addiction. Losing weight starts in the kitchen and that's where most people fail. Exercise is not even necessary to lose weight.
It's business model is really quite genius . Have flashy looking equipment, which inspires you to sign up. kick out real gym goers, and offer low fees. This gets the temporary non-gym goer to sign up during a " health kick" they go for a couple months, and then stop going. They fees are so low, and cancelling is so hard. But hey, it's only 10$ month. They then have hundred of members they charge $10 mo for nothing.
@@pretzelboi64 I'm oversimplifying but losing weight is generally just about eating less of what your body burns(while still getting the vitamins and stuff you need). So eating less has a bigger effect, but exercising also allows them to burn it a little faster. But, then again, losing weight isn't the only reason you go to a gym. Still, a gym offering fatty and sugary food to it's users(most of which want to lose weight) is pretty shitty. No-one's forcing the fatties to eat it, but it's still like offering a cigarette to someone you know is trying to quit smoking.
I've been going to Planet Fitness since I was 17, and even worked at two of them during my college years. This is 100% a location-to-location phenomenon. 8 years of lifting at various Planet Fitnesses in different states, and I've never seen the alarm turned on once. These days I have a home gym but I still don't think there's a cleaner / nicer gym for the price than Planet.
I’ve only been going to planet fitness a few years now, but I’ve also never heard the link alarm. I think my gym even took down that stupid link alarm sign.
I agree. I had a membership for a year and never heard the lunk alarm go off and there was a ton of heavy weightlifters and beginners there. It was a clean gym, cheap and when I emailed to cancel due to moving, they canceled with no questions or issues.
Damn. I had me and my friend sign up for the student membership, because we are both younger, it’s free until August 31st. We’re both beginners, and this was the only kind of deal we could find 😅 I’m sorry to everyone who got kicked out. Though I would be sorta intimidated, I would be inspired mostly. The people deadlifting 500lbs? That’s so impressive. It’s what I want to be. I don’t want to be scared to push myself. I can’t even do a push up or pull up yet, but hopefully me and my friend will make some gains. I doubt we’d trigger the alarm
Man I've had nothing but smooth, pleasant experiences at the Planet Fitness I go to. No lunk alarm going off, no kicking people out. Reading these anecdotes is wild.
I nearly went to Planet Fitness simply because one was so close to me. I decided against it as I mostly just enjoy a run every so often and don't really do heavy workouts. Looks like I dodged a bullet lmao.
I work at an Anytime Fitness and it’s actually more inspiring than demotivating for unfit people to see fit people also working out. If you are are out of shape and want to get thinner or stronger than it’s all about having the right mindset. It sounds kinda cliche but if you are demotivated by seeing someone more physically fit than you than you need to change your mindset. You just need to focus on yourself and how you can improve and no one else. I’ve worked at AF for about 5 years and most of the people I see that PF would’ve kicked out for being “too strong” got that way because they were 300 pounds at one point and started going to the gym. It’s crazy to think how you could go to PF for years and at some point they would consider you too strong for their gym and would kick you out.
I go to anytime fitness and I’ve only seen maybe 2 people in decent shape and they were never 300 pounds. lol I’ve been working out on a three days on, one day off, ppl split, and I’m in amazing shape. I don’t see any problem with planet fitness. My grandma works out there and I’m glad she has a gym that matches her needs. Lastly, I have never felt inspire by anyone at the gym. Regardless, that’s pointless. To make muscle building progress in the gym, it requires knowledge, diet that matches your goals, good form, finding a balance between overtraining/under training, and quality of reps. All that comes with experience and research. The people in the gym don’t matter.
the planet fitness by my house is pretty even split down the middle; they've got literal 90 year old couples 'working out' together in their sunday best (pretty precious tbh) and muscle hunk idiots getting even more jacked i think it ultimately depends on the people running and working at the location; like yeah, it's franchise, but if your location does numbers the boys up top aren't going to care about the body types present the location here also doesn't do any of the goofy "food parties"; i was actually kind of shocked by how pleasant and productive the place was motherfuckers definitely need to get off their phones though. like my guy you did four reps and you're 20 minutes into your "rest", get the fuck off the machine. lmao
Ngl that seems like a legit thing,as a skinny weakling if i'd go to the gym to gain muscle mass i would obviously want those in there to be big guys full of muscles that way i can look at them and think something along the lines "ok i will be like that one day" that way i'd have a goal set in mind and it will be all around me to remind me all the time why do i do that not to mention most big muscley guys are actually cool ppl and they'd actually jump in and help you or give you advices so the whole concept of "no muscle guys here, this is for beginners" is just stupid,if you're a beginner and you're scared or intimidated by those advanced in this then you clearly don't aim to get there yourself.
I have been going to PF for two years. I have never seen a lot of this. I like that they don't let people film. They don't do pizza and doughnuts anymore. I have not heard the lunk alarm go off. The staff are very nice. The gym is clean and I see staff cleaning all the time. The only downside is if I have to start with DB stuff, I have to do negatives with 12 t 14 reps
As an overweight guy who just began to go to the gym. Those heavyweight lifter with a muscle as big as my head is the kindest people I ever meet. They teach me to use the equipment, they encouraged me.
Same as a female. I went to a little local gym back in college where there was almost no females. I got nothing but a support and encouragement
that's what kept me in the gym, seeing people like them knowing it was possible. One guy was hitting 625 on dead lift for reps, I was trying to hit 315, he showed me the proper form and I ended up being able to pull 405 with the proper from

So thankful for those kinds of guys ❤❤❤
Real talk man. When I was hitting the gym pretty hard a few years ago, the majority of the super-fit people either didn't bother me whatsoever, or actually went out of their way to be friendly/helpful. Sure, you occasionally got some meathead asshole, but you're bound to find shitty people in any demographic
Also, I'm surprised more people don't mention this, but a lot of body builders are actually pretty quiet and/or nerdy
Started going to the gym recently.. seeing other people in a good physique inspires me more. It's like showing you how in good shape you can become if you keep the hard work and push yourself to the limit.

If they don't cancel your gym membership just get your bank to block charges from them.

I can agree on my experience. The strongest people are those who lift others up not put them down…
Back in highschool, we had a weight “room” that students could work out in at lunch time
Every now and then, i’d end up wandering in for one reason or another
Without fail, every time someone audibly mentioned going for their personal best on a bench/deadlift/squat, the meathead types would stop what they’re doing, wait for the person to lift, and encourage them regardless of success
And this group included one of the teachers who could easily bench 300 lbs (once saw him wander in, rep 315 7 times, talk to a few students about their workout regiments, and leave) a few players on the football team, and a pair of twins who are currently firefighters

Interesting story, shame so many people buy into the “judgment free” crap
@@Unpopularity
How much is Planet Fitness paying you for your PR work?
As soon as I heard a story on the news about a girl literally getting kicked out of Planet Fitness for being "too fit" and thus looking too intimidating for the other gym goers that day, I was just dumbfounded, and it made me glad that I had cancelled my monthly membership with the one in my area about 2 years prior. right. they immediately call it intimidating when most people see that as inspiration to whats possible. vast majority of gym goers want to help the new guy. we love seeing new people showing motivation to turn themselves around. planet fitness's model is all about keeping insecure people insecure and feeding them pizza and bagels to make sure they keep coming.

The key is find something you like, and keep practicing until you get better and stronger.
yeah... also "home gym" saves alot of trafic...:)
for years I did kickboxing at a gym on the other side of town.
But insecurity is profitable 🤑
I dont even think that’s the issue….. people have always had this made up scenario where the hot people have to make themselves lesser for the unconventionals which… reeks of bs.

That's good. I wish everyone felt that way. I personally am not in elite shape but I have been told I intimidated someone because they saw me leg press over 800lbs. They threatened to cancel my membership if I did it again. It was just a leg press, not even a squat or deadlift.

Bodybuilders shouldn't be shamed, they're the reason why people get hyped up for working out.

Planet fitness isn’t really that bad tbh it’s just people that make it seems awful
I’ve never heard it go off in the year I’ve been going

I have never seen a company that judged others so badly. And their motto is “Judgment Free”. The lack of self awareness is amazing.
These days a dude with big muscles minding his business is unacceptable but it’s ok for 100 weak (physically and mentally) people to bully and cancel him to make themselves feel strong.
I watched your coding tutorials back when I was a beginner and now I’m an employed frontend developer.
Thanks a lot Man
Its not a lack of self awareness it's a marketing decision
You had to pivot to “cancel culture…” Frankly, yes, it is ok for a private business to refuse service to anyone. PF’s way of going about it is stupid. Even dumber is someone whining about being “canceled” when there’s a half-dozen other gyms you could go to. Whiner…
That’s you, you’re a whiner. Whiny, whine, whiner.
*cough cough Activision blizard cough
I had a planet fitness membership because it was on my way to work and it was 10 dollars a month. It was pretty chill and there was plenty of lifting equipment. I actually gained a lot of muscle there. I did big lifts and grunting at times. I was a member for 2 years and never once heard an alarm. I think the alarm was just to add to the theme of their overall massaging. There were a lot of people who only showed up on days that they had food lol
I'm glad everyone sees through them now. It's crazy to imagine calling yourself "judgement free" while shunning people for being too fit, in a gym of all places lol
I think Scott Cramer's video helped with bringing this into the general public's eye.
I would get kicked out and I’m calm and not roided out. It doesn’t even allow basic weight lifting routines.
@c spahn Idk man, the gym bros at my gym are actually some of the most chill dudes I've heard speak. Sure obnoxiously loud, but I'll take obnoxious grunting and overexertion then being judged for going to a gym.

It doesn’t shun people for being too fit. It shuns people who are toxic.
I got kicked out last year because one of the employees "didn't like the look in my eye."
It's absurd.
I'm sorry this happened to you. Planet Fitness needs to be used and shutdown and if people don't like pushing their limits to achieve an optimal workout, then the staff and owner are insecure with themselves and shouldn't never be allowed to run a gym.

People judge Planet Fitness because
A. they have a shitty club near them (this is true for ALL gyms it doesnt matter where you go, a shit gym is a shit gym)
B. they don't understand that you dont HAVE to eat the free pizza they give out OR drink the soda's they have there
C. aren't looking to get fit and believe everything everyone tells them, so a bunch of guys making a youtube video being assholes in the gym somehow means it's a bad place to be.
Most of the hate you see is from people who have never been to planet fitness and don’t know the “rules” are mostly just marketing and not actually rules, or are fitness influencers who purposefully went in to make a spectacle of themselves so they could get kicked out for content

No. No. No. Let me give you the full story about what you're trying to say. When you're trying to cancel a gym membership you can't just cancel it and that's it. You usually have to pay another month's worth. Most people know this but they forget. Then what happens is they try to fight that and what happens is is you're given the number to corporate.

Alot of fat and skinny people are scared to go to the gym because they don't wanna be judged. Less people probably get judged for their policy
Too many people nowadays think other people are responsible for how _they_ feel.

Damn, this makes me grateful for the planet fitness around my area.
Going there with tank tops, dropping weights during PRs, and bringing big ass water bottles and not hearing a single word from the people there. In fact, they’re all pretty chill with me and always ask about what I’m working on, my plans for the day, etc.
same mine is chill and i don't think they've ever used their alarm.. never heard it either thought it was just a threat to scare people lmao
I agree one of them even goes out of there way to offer me a cup of water or even a small cup of Gatorade if I start to look thirsty.
Everyone clapped and cheered, it was so nice.

u grunt = u r a lunk. I mean, who tf doesn't grunt when doing deadlift/benchpress/whatever-kind-of-exercises?
its so dumb. I worked at planet for a few years at multiple locations during college and the only time i EVER used it was when we were closing in 5 minutes as a quick warning to patrons.
Most of the "advanced lifters" I've met at gym either don't care, keep it to themselves, don't mind helping, or actively seek to help.
Ig it depends on the gym from place to place but most of the comments say otherwise
I agree. I had a membership for a year and never heard the lunk alarm go off and there was a ton of heavy weightlifters and beginners there. It was a clean gym, cheap and when I emailed to cancel due to moving, they canceled with no questions or issues.
Mine is quite similar, it doesn’t even have a link alarm or any of the clothing restrictions.
But pizza at the gym is wild lol. Is that at every PF?

The fuck is this thread?
The people in the gym don’t matter.
the planet fitness by my house is pretty even split down the middle; they've got literal 90 year old couples 'working out' together in their sunday best (pretty precious tbh) and muscle hunk idiots getting even more jacked
i think it ultimately depends on the people running and working at the location; like yeah, it's franchise, but if your location does numbers the boys up top aren't going to care about the body types present
the location here also doesn't do any of the goofy "food parties"; i was actually kind of shocked by how pleasant and productive the place was
motherfuckers definitely need to get off their phones though. like my guy you did four reps and you're 20 minutes into your "rest", get the fuck off the machine. lmao
They don't want u going super sayian
The people who are offended by seeing people in better shape than them are the same people with #growthmindset in their bio
