  • Big thanks to Ride On Moto in Winchester, VA for loaning me the 2018 KTM 1290 Super Adventure R to test and review! Yes, I know this is a LONG review video but I wanted to go into detail about not only the bike but also the KTM My Ride app as I've seen very little information on it. Also, I'd had requests to compare it to my 2016 KTM 1290 Super Adventure so I spend some time talking about that as well.

    I have been riding this bike for over 6 months now on both DS routes and some road touring. No other bike I have own does both on/off road better as a combined package. Tire selection is key as you will need to choose the right set of tires for either road or dirt. I have found Shinko makes excellent choices for both; Shinko 777 F&R for street and 804/805 F&R for dirt riding. The Shinko's just work better than the Continental tires (less vibes than the TKC80's), improved wet handling, better lean traction, longer tread life, and most important is usually 50% cheaper too. Learn to change your own tires like I have and you swap back and forth as needed for the type of riding you are planning.

      I think you're asking an awful lot for guys to change their own tires...most don't even want to change their own oil. Just kidding! I'm with ya; a simple tire swap takes it from chewing up trails to eating up pavement. Congrats on the bike!

      I have finally pulled the trigger on some Motoz Adventure GPS tires, I hope they hit the mark. I do like the Heidenau's that I have but we get lots of rain where I am and that is not where they are comfy. The TKC 70's were excellent as well. I just pulled of the Shinkos which were pretty decent for the price for sure.

      Am looking at this bike over the BMW 1250. Have you spent time on both of these. My riding will be mainly road, which some first roads.

    That box on the right side of the bike is to keep a smartphone. It is waterproof and has a USB port to charge the phone.
    The app became available first for Android devices, and yes, it gives you turn-by-turn voice instructions.
    Unfortunately KTM doesn't update the app (with what it really needs) for a long time. One of the problems is that when you reach your destination but, for example, don't have anywhere to park which forces you to keep riding, the navigation stops. Well, if you know where you are, ok, but if you don't know it can be a problem. It should continue giving instructions like every GPS navigation apps.
    Other thing that is incredibly ridiculous is the lack of an option to make a login, to connect to our Google account in order to backup all our saved destinations in case we buy another smartphone.
    Now that these bike are also being sold in the US, please help us giving a bad (or neutral) feedback to the app (saying what you think is wrong/missing) in order to see if KTM adds more features once and for all.
    I was forgetting one thing: You can't make phone calls; KTM doesn't give that option for security reasons...
    This is another thing i don't agree. Ok, obviously is not very secure to be running through the contact list while riding (even we having that option on the GPS) but they could, at least, let us create a speed dial with 5 numbers and also give us the list of the last 5 calls we've made, the last 5 received, and lost.
    As for the heat, you're right. Comparing with the T version it is more noticeable on the S and R version because these models doesn't have the manifold with integrated insulation, you have to buy it... PowerParts #60405008000

      Did you buy the 1290? How does it compare to the GS? I am looking at both right now and haven't decided which one to purchase. I am leaning toward the SAR.

      @@rso1411 I have an 18. It's a very different bike than the GS, which is brilliant. The SAR is a Super Duke on stilts, full stop. With VERY little effort you're able to get the missing power back from the SD, and then you truly have a hyper-enduro. Where a GS is refined, the SAR is manic. Ideal bike for the liter bike rider who want a travel enduro. Cheers

    Thank you thank you. Finally a review on this bike that isn't blasting through the sands of Peru, riding single track in Australia or has Chris Burch jumping from rock to rock. You've covered all my questions from windshield to tires to two up riding on the type of riding I personally would being doing on this bike sans the long distance touring. My dealer told me that there is a lowering kit available for this bike that doesn't void any warranties for those of us that aren't over 6' tall. All that's left is negotiating the price. Excellent video and thanks again.

      While it would be fun to do a review like that between my lack of Chris Burch riding skills and the fact Ride On Moto would be more than pissed if I returned the bike in anything less than pristine condition, I figured it best to review it from the standpoint of how "most" people would be using the bike.       Hey nothing wrong with riding single track in Australia.
      Remembering the 1290 SAR is designed as an "off road" bike which is probably why the majority of reviews/ads etc are filmed as you've mentioned, blasting through off road type scenarios. However looking at your questions re: windscreens, tyres, two up touring, and Mario's response of how "most" people would be using the bike - is this the bike that you guys should be looking for? Maybe it's the 1290 SAS.
      Here in Australia, there are a lot of 1290R's about and the majority are used "off road" as designed as opposed to the asphalt touring say taken by BMW riders. (Not too many clean & polished 1290's around here) Agree with you that Mario has put together another excellent video and correct me if I'm wrong, but reading into your comments/questions I'm guessing you'd be using this bike similar to how Mario uses his …… predominately black top riding ???
      Whilst Mario you made comparisons between the 1290 R and your own 2016 SA, you didn't answer the question I would have of you, and that is ………. would you trade your tourer for the off road model?
      Like you I have the 2016 1290 SA and whilst I love off road riding, and the bike has many off road kms on the odometer, I do use it for extended trips and as a daily ride so I'm not sure I'd part with my bike for the "R". The "T" as they were later named comes standard with everything that you need to shell out extra cash for on the "R" like heated grips, & heated seats, and how good is the adjustment of the suspension at the push of a button?
      Sorry to crash your post Roadstar 1963, it's just your question caught my eye and led me off on my own rant. The 1290 is an awesome ride whichever option you choose, best of luck.
      I was considering updating, but the more I think about it the big white girl is the right bike for me. Maybe when the 790 R is released I'll look at one of those and have one of each to satisfy my off road adventures ……………….. after Mario's review of course !

      Rockin Scotty, no, for my purposes for a main bike, I would (will) keep my 16 SA over picking up the 18 R model. By the time I add on some of the options my bike has (heated grips, heated seats, factory bags) I'd be back up to about the same price as my current bike (MSRP anyway) and still not have the electronic suspension or larger fuel tank. Besides, since I use mine for about 90% on road use, it'd make no sense to replace with with a bike intended more for off road.
      I'd even be hard pressed to justify having two 1290s in the garage. I suppose if money were no object, I would pick up an R model to go along with my bike. But then again, if money were no object, I'd just buy 2 of everything and hire 3 full-time mechanics.
      Now the 790 R...if KTM can get the price point right on it....I COULD justify adding one of the those to the garage (let's hope Kristen isn't reading the comments section)...and you can bet your ass I'll be testing and reviewing one.

      Hey Rockin Scotty. I wish I could ride in Australia with you but most of my riding will be on Fire roads in upstate NY and in The mountains of Pennsylvania. My wife always like to ride with me so I need to keep it fairly safe, just for some reason I pefer to have the R instead of the S. Maybe because I've ridden more off road than on. My wife has no interest of riding on the back of my WR 426. Go figure.

      Mario, I think we're both on the same page when it comes to hanging on to our 2016 SA's over the alternative and for the same reasons.
      Roadstar 1963, first & foremost mate, good onya for looking after your brides safety and I can certainly understand her not wanting to get on the back of a WR.
      Running knobby tyres the majority of the time on my SA (T) which has the same 19 & 17 inch wheel configuration as the "S", for fire trails it's more than capable but at the same time it does lap up the asphalt miles even on the off road tyres. I think if the current 1290 R was a part of the model selection when I bought mine, yes I probably would of lent that way too, but like Mario, would I part with my 16 model SA now for the latest R? "No way", and purely for the reasons we've both mentioned. I'm struggling to understand why the "T" model is no longer available in both Australia & the States but wish you well in your decisions.

    Review is spot on. I've ridden both the 2018 1290 S and R back to back. I'm partial to the S model mainly because of my foot-to- ground issue. The lack of. I'm 5' 9'. I'm sure it looked pretty silly as I came to a stop at a light and initial movement once the light changed to green. I've been told the suspension on the R model can be adjusted lower but for me I plan on more street vs offroad. Just like you mentioned, when you're cornering you feel the nobbies (on the R). especially slow speed. At speed not to much vibration from the tires. I was skeptical about vibration for both the S and R model's. I expected a lot of vibration (1st time riding a KTM) but it was basically non-existent; compared to my 01 Busa (w/102k miles). Loved the acceleration. the Super Duke GT is awesome as well. Mario, one of the guys I talked to mentioned something about there is a lock-out feature. Can't remember what that was about, but it seemed bad. ie. something that we-all wouldn't want. Know anything about that?

    I went from the 1190 ADR to this bike. I loved the 1190 and thought I would never sell it but after a bit of time on this one it just became apparent that this was a better bike all the way around. The engine is better, suspension is better, the bike feels lighter with a lower center of gravity. Certainly more refinements and creature comforts but all in all a better bike IMHO. I prefer this bike to the GS and the other adventure bikes because of its pure fun factor. This is by far the most capable off road large adventure bike and I think it should be clear that this is truly an adventure machine capable of some pretty radical off roading. The S and the T models were designed for a purpose as well as was this bike and it is great they identify and produce those specific differences because that is the difference in individual riding preferences. I will say that if I were to own a dual sport and used for simple travel and no "Adventure" riding I think BMW makes a better machine than the S or T models as much as that pains me to say being a KTM guy. The BMW is of higher quality from top to bottom, however, the KTM's still offer up more of a fun factor. As far as your review I think you were spot on, well done.

      Does the 1290SAR feel the same as the GS in regards to centre of gravity etc? Apart from good power, what else is more fun compared to the GS?

    Top Tip. When pairing headset in My Ride press Set to go to Pairing then press Set again to commence pairing process. I spent ages with Pairing showing on the screen and nothing happening before I realised you have to give Set a second press to start searching.

    Great review. I've had the 1290R for a couple of years now. Can't imagine any other bike that does everything as well as this bike.
    And, I've had no other bike that demands as much respect as this one.

      If you ride mostly off road, yes, without question. If you ride tarmac most, then I'd say the BMW.

    Just traded my well used 15 1290SA for a 20 1290SAR. When people ask why I went with, essentially, the same bike my answer is this: Nothing on the market really competes with the big KTM. Yes there are other bikes that play in the same sandbox. But, in my opinion, none of them do it as well.
    The quickshifter, HHC, and TFT didn't hurt either. :P

    Great review - I really wanted to know the stuff you covered - I struggle to find reviewers that cover the extra things I am interested in like space under the seat (for tools and 2 way radio) great to get a pillion perspective as well. I have been a long term BMW rider and am fed up of poor colours or BMW charging a whole stack of cash for a colour you decide on. I am looking for a change and doing my homework and the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S is looking like a contender but it's hard to find the info you want when most reviewers are only interested in how fast / how it wheelies/ how it feels for a 20 minute ride. Your review was spot on - the stuff I needed to know - what it's like over big miles and with a pillion - does the app work well with the navigation - how does the fuel tank open with keyless. What luggage options and what's the seat like and the room under it. You answered all these questions and more - Great review.

    Maybe this has been mentioned before, and you probably realize this, but the Rottweiler intake helps dissipate that under seat heat well. The air can just flow under that tank better and wick away the heat. Made a huge difference on my 1090. Good practical review Mario, but I ain't trading my 1090 anytime soon! Don't need all the electronics, one reason I traded the Beemer for the Kato!

    I love my ktm 1290 s and ive ridden 6000 miles on it. Thus far though ive had the dashboard fail twice (came back on again) the preload has never worked. This is even though the dealer has had it in once before i took a 4500 mile roadtrip with no luck. The bluetooth never worked satisfactory, it kept reseting the connection every other time i turned the bike of. It got a bit better when i uninstalled the app on my phone so that i could at least use the bike to check incomming calls and navigate my spotify playlists but it still keeps droping connection so ive given up on it. The hill hold controll has caused me to allmost drop the bike twice while trying to creep up an incline with poor visiblity and i have since turned it off. I should mention that I allso felt that the HHC never really engaged when i thought it could have been usefull but rather it had a life of its own and since i allways have 2 fingers on my brake i never really had use for it to begin with. Oh and some ppl have complained about headshake, yes it does speedwobble but ive never thought it was a dangerous habbit but it does move around a bit from time to time north of 120 mph. All negatives aside, i still love the bike because its very comfortable, nimble and super powerfull but it will be a cold day in hell before i would consider keeping the thing without warranty.

    Very thorough review. One small mistake though - the fuel cap is automatically unlocked when you switch off the bike (and possibly when you switch on, haven't tried), and will remain unlocked for something like 15 seconds. At least on the 2020 model, which I have. And I'm not sure you mentioned, but these have an electro mechanical steering lock. Not a fan of that, but it's only logical when it runs a keyless system. Haven't heard of any issues with it, but it will certainly not last as long as an old fashioned pure mechanical lock.
    Love this bike. I ride mine like a super sport in the corners (running pure asphalt tires of course), throwing it down as far as it will go, when the weather permits. The suspension is that good. Even the R model is so much fun in the corners, I don't want to ruin that with offroad tires. Maybe should have gotten the S instead, haha. Never felt more confident on any other bike I have owned, including a Hayabusa, a 2017 Kawasaki Z1000SX and about 6 other bikes. I also love the My Ride app along with the TFT screen, and use all the functions frequently along with a Sena 10S. Wish the gps was integrated fully into the bike, but it works well nonetheless. And I wish you could make phone calls using the bike (you still can't). I rely on the phone features a lot since I need it for work.
    Bit worried about the longtime reliability, and am very annoyed at the fact that KTM bikes only have a 2 year warranty where I live (all Japanese brands have a 5 year warranty here, for example), but I do think that these bikes have gotten a bit better these past few years, as they have had some issues; with the keyless system, the fuel cap and a few other things.

      And the gearbox ! mine went at 3700 miles no offload no rain treated well without using shifter .I waited 9 months in lock down for ktm to get a gearbox from Austria. Theve made the gearbox with better stronger metal mines a 19 plate

    Thanks mate, great review, one of the most comprehensive I’ve seen.
    Just ordered an R. Looking forward to it. The S probably is more suited to the riding (touring) I’ll do but the R comes with conventional suspension, spoked rims and a 21 inch front wheel, all things I like. Will probably never take it properly off road but it’s nice to know I could (if I had the talent).

      While the S is a little better on-road (semi-active suspension is a nice to have), the R is great on-road but much better off with the larger spoked wheels.

    Great review. Unless I missed it, you may want to clarify that the technology package is not a standard option. So, many of the app features you reviewed, hill hold, quick shift etc will not be standard to this bike. Mo money mo problems. 👍

    From what I understand, the key fob works perfectly and there are no problems with the proximity start and access to the fuel tank...yeah

      In the week or so I had it, I never had any issue with the fob. Hopefully it works that well long term.

      The 2017 KTM SAR requires the gas cap to be opened within 60 seconds after the bike has been shutdown. Miss that window the start button needs to be pushed again to light up the ECM then shutdown again to open the cap. My gas cap malfunctioned after about three months but was replaced under warranty by KTM. When it failed there wasn't enough fuel in the tank to get it to the nearest KTM dealer (50 miles away) so the six bolts attaching the cap had to be removed along with three tank cowls. A gallon of gasoline was poured into the tank to get it to the dealer and the removed items reinstalled. A key operated gas cap is preferred especially if you are trying to fill at a station in the middle of nowhere. Some things like this on the bike need to be simplified.

      @@2WR I too hope you find time in your schedule to test the SAS dude, I'm seriously considering getting one and a review like this one of the SAS would be super well received. Great review man. If I could find a dealer with a demonstrator SAS it wouldn't be such a problem as I could go test one myself but where i am located in Europe means needing to book flights & hotels just to be able to get to a location where finding a demonstrator SAS isnt a problem. Oh well, here's to hoping you manage to review the 2019 SAS.

    I'm sure somebody else mentioned this already but maybe once more: KTM policy is to not allow making phone calls yourself. They want to avoid the rider being distracted. Only answering phone calls is and will be allowed.

      I saw that in the literature afterward. Still seems odd they wouldn't allow to call out using voice command but not a big deal for me since I don't take many calls on my bike to begin with.

      Hey Scott, I've got the 1290 SA-S and I can tell you it is a blast and worth every penny. I commute 90 miles round trip on it most days and do a bunch of fire roads on my off time. It is a beast on and off pavement. The Pirelli Scorpion Trail II tires it comes with are quite good on pavement (dry or wet) and they're surprisingly capable on the fire roads. I would recommend doing the Rottweiler intake, SAS/Canister delete, and getting the heated grips. You can literally feel the intake growl in your chest when getting on it and the delete gets rid of a bunch of superfluous nonsense so that you can actually fit the tool kit on the bike. Seriously, you won't regret it one bit.

    Loved the S.A.R I sat on, regretfully never got to test ride one. I was surprised I could flat foot it well enough that I didn't feel nervous. The height of my K16 GT does force me to rely on my toes more.
    The SAR is at the top of my list for dual use, BMW is catching up though.
    For comparison I wasn't able to get both feet on the ground with an R12 GSA, probably couldn't even get one foot on the ground, considering I'm 6-ish feet tall that's depressing.

    That TKC-80 rear tire is gonna last maybe 2-2500 miles max. Mine on my 1290 SAR is almost toast after 1700 miles with limited dirt riding. Great tire but doesn't last long.

    Mines a 2019
    The daytime running lights, if enabled will switch over to headlight when the TFT changes from light to dark. Some people leave it off for that reason.
    I have the DRL on, no problem for me.
    My tires are looking pretty good at 4000 miles. Noticeable wear on the rear but not done yet.
    I have a set of Dunlop Mission tires I will be trying next.

    On BMW'S, a lot of maintenance requires special tools, does the KTM require the same type of maintenance/tools? What should I expect for yearly maintenance costs?

      Eddie, for routine maintenance, no special tools are required. In fact, you could probably do 95% of the work with the tool kit included. Obviously a well stocked garage with things like a torque wrench, feeler gauges, etc would be optimal. It's tough to give you an annual estimate on maintenance as it really depends on how many miles you plan to ride in a year. Also, I'm on the assumption you'd be doing your own work (so not including labor) since you asked about tools. Oil/filter changes at 9,300 miles (aside from the 600 miles break-in. Filters are under $20 and depends on what oil you decide to use. At 18,600 (30,000km) again, the oil/filter and air filter but add in spark plugs which should run you no more than $70 (despite what the KTM dealer website says) and the unless your valves are out of spec (which you'd be the first) you'd need some shims if you don't have a shim kit. Stock tires will last you 8-9k miles. While I replaced the chain/sprockets on 2106 SA ($170) at 18k, they had a LOT of life left (I changed them before my trip to Alaska as cheap insurance). My chain guide slider needed to be replaced at 28k miles and I think it was around $40. There's plenty of other things to "check" but not necessarily replace. Honestly, your biggest costs will be gas and tires if you plan to maintain the bike yourself.

    I think you missed the purpose of the box attached to the right side of steering head. It is for storing your smart phone and has a USB port in it for charging the phone while riding. At least that is the purpose on my 2017 KTM SAR so maybe the changed it on the 2018 model.

    Hi there! Great review.... (same as your SD-GT review!!). Which one would be your pick? SD-GT or SA-S. I am a big and tall guy, so the SA-S would maybe be better for my needs i feel. Would miss the brutal acceleration from the SD-GT or is there not much of a difference?

      Well...it’s over 500lbs so it’s not light but the crash bars keep it up off its side a bit making it a little easier. I don’t have any trouble picking them up but then again, I wouldn’t want to be doing it multiple times a day.

      Jeff, I didn't notice any difference in quality or volume but...you do need to make sure you have the volume on your phone turned up. If the music volume on the phone itself is turned down, then that will be the max volume to your headset.

      I can't confirm it will work with all music apps (though I see no reason why it shouldn't) but it will work with the major ones such as the iPhone's native music app, spotify, Pandora, etc.

      For me? I'd add the Orange bike to the garage. But not quite an apples to apples comparison since the Enduro Pro comes with semi-active electronic suspension, 19/17 wheels, and an 8 gallon fuel tank. The most direct comparison for the Enduro Pro in the KTM line up was the SA-T but it was discontinued for 2018.

      Not currently. The 5 second county doesn't begin until you release the brake so it's plenty of time to get going.

      To be super general, the GS is the more comfortable of the 2 while the KTM is the more off-road capable.

    What would you recommend for the 2019 KTM 1290 Adventure R 89 octane fuel with no ethanol or 91 octane fuel with ethanol. Ty for your time and love the vids.

      While I'm not fan of ethanol in fuel, I would still go with the 91 octane. Running a lower octane than recommended, best case scenario you lose a little power; worst case scenario you take the chance of engine damage. Running a lower octane for a tank or two likely won't hurt anything but I wouldn't chance it long term. Perhaps your best option is run the 89 with no ethanol and add some octane booster.

      Not as well as it will solo. 😀 Really depends on the weight of your passenger and how technical the trails are you're planning to ride. I've had Kristen on the back on gravel and hard-packed dirt roads (on my 2016 SA) but wouldn't hit up anything technical with a passenger on the back. Even if you have Chris Birch-level off road skills, I doubt your passenger would be too happy on the really rough stuff.

      I’m just under 6’1 205 lb. and my girl is just under 5’10 140 lb. I took her on the back with no suspension adjustments and the bike was unbelievably easy to handle. I have ridden moto x on and off my whole life and I’m 46 now just a little background so if your riding skills are descent to good and your girl isn’t huge it’s very manageable 👍🏻 awesome motorcycle

    Wow, you don't like the 35" seat height? You'd really hate the 39" S.H. on my KTM 625 SXC.

      I’m not sure how you drew that conclusion from “it’s a bit of a stretch.” I have zero issue with the seat height. And no, I wouldn’t “really hate” your 625. My 250 XCF comes it at 38 and again, have zero issue with it either.

      Haha, yeah sorry. Anytime I hear any complaint about SH I assume they don't care for it. I hear 35" seat height and think "OH, BABY, HERE I COME" but I know I'd miss that 13" of ground clearance I regularly use in the Colorado mountains. That's a sweet bike, but I don't think I will enjoy another 230# under me. I might have to stick to the 690R for my upgrade :(

      No worries, sorry if that came off as angry...I was still half asleep when I was responding. I get seat height complaints on ADV bikes all the time. Some people still don't understand if you want ground clearance, it comes with a high seat height. In regards to this bike and the rest of the KTM line-up, I'm anxiously awaiting the 790 Adventure R.

      The easy way to mount motorcycles with a high seat height is leaving it on the kickstand.

      Thats how I get on and off my 2018 KTM SAR especially with the top case.

    will it be comfortable for a 5'7 rider?

      Lot of variables to include your riding ability, inseam, weight, etc. At 5’7” I doubt you’ll be able to get more than one foot down.

      I'm 5'6" and had mine for a year and 7500 miles, no problems, I'm 43 and been riding since I was 5
