  • The ESEE 6 is a great all around outdoor fixed blade, I've had a lot of ESEE knives through the years and the 6 for me was a huge step from using the 4 for so long. Please use the Amazon link below to purchase your own ESEE 6, doing so will help support this channel to continue making and sharing videos.

    I've had mine going on 3 years now. Love the knife and the sheath functions just fine. I put a small pack that holds a altoids tin on it. Definitely my favorite and go to knife.

      When you're ready pick up a pair of the G10 scales from The Knife Connection... They're incredibly comfortable. I always liked the Micarta scales on ESEE knives but after trying the G10 scales from TKC, I bought them for all my ESEE knives.

    Say Heah, My modified Swamp Rat Rodent 6 is prolly one of my Fav's, But I had mine thinned down at the apex and I had the top guard taken off, so now it look's more like a Ratmandu on steriod's which is also one of my Fav's. Everytime I see a Essee 6 video I'm reminded of how good of a 6" blade I have. I had everything done at the Swamp Rat Custom Shop and they did a outstanding Job. Yeah, I have a choil on it that makes it so much more versatile and even though I like a 7" blade for a survival knife, I do not hesitate using my modified Rodent 6 as a survival knife. But alot of my friend's have the Essee 6 and other aker's, That's why I have a good bird's eye view comparing what I have and all that's out there. Oh, fir my wet and snowy weather use I just teamed up my A-1 with a H-1 for a great combo. But if I didn't have what I have. I defenetly would consider a Essee. ,, .

    The reason they switched to plastic over the kydex was because the kydex sheaths were breaking or failing in some ways for soldiers over seas. Kydex is ok but not in some climates, weather conditions. The newer sheaths are much better anyway.

    I agree that the ESEE 6 is the best all around woods blade on the market. I generally carry the 6, an Izula 2 and a Bahco Laplander. I can do everything from wood prep to shelter construction to food prep. Prior to getting the ESEE 6, I was using a TOPS BOB and it was too thick and the handle wasn't as comfortable in my opinion. I am considering buying the custom scales by TKC. What do you guys think about TKC's scales? Are they worth the money?

    completely agree esee 6 is one of my favorite all around knives. just a small correction the its don't come with a Molle Lok it comes with a Molle compatible backing, it's not really a dangler more of a belt clip high rise, you might have meant Tek Lok which it does not come with but can be added aftermarket , also the original izula and izula 2 does come with micarta scales, but does have options for other scales. That's all other than that excellent video love the blade keep it up

    batons wood like butter, love it, very much torn between the becker bk7 and the esee 6, however I do think the bk7 will be able to baton and cut better, i think the esee 6 will be more adept to striking a firesteel and it should also be good to curl wood with for tinder, what do you think? Am i pretty spot on?

    • @GearReviewDepot
      @GearReviewDepot  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      K193 I personally would pick an ESEE over any BK any day but, not good for striking a ferro rod in my experience, no worries though because I don't use my blades for that anyway. I use a small tool attached by paracord for striking.

    • @hans-jurgenwiegand7465
      @hans-jurgenwiegand7465 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheTacticalDefender if I’m really in a bind, too bad knife! They make knives every day, we only go around once! The Edge works great for striking sparks, & you only need to use one spot on the blade! I always carry a Morakniv Bush Crafter, no matter what other knife, I carry. I also carry an assortment of Spiderco pocket folders. I do own a couple ESEE knives, because of warranty, and I have a couple of bags for Emergency in my vehicle, which are supplied with identical supplies. I’m really hoping I won’t need to use either one, but I couldn’t resist the ESEE 6, Venom, with red scales. I’ve got my folding saws, & axes, cooking gear, & water gear. In case of an emergency, it’s to late to shop for the right gear. Too bad I had to be in my 70’s, before I could afford my gear!

  • @tylerdaily42

    I am struggling between the Esee 6 and the RAT 5. I like the added length of the Esee for chopping and batoning, but I feel like the RAT 5 would be more manageable for slicing and, in particular, processing game. Can you make a suggestion? Thanks!

    • @GearReviewDepot
      @GearReviewDepot  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both great blades for sure but the quality on the ESEE is far better than the RAT. If you're on a tight budget you'll be fine with a RAT but if you have the money to spend you can't go wrong with an ESEE. The ESEE 6 is a great overall blade than can do everything.

    • @GearReviewDepot
      @GearReviewDepot  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rawhead Rex I'm also a fan of micarta, I prefer it over anything else for my fixed blades. I honestly don't know how well the g10 will perform, I'm sure they're solid but I can't imagine it being as good as micarta, especially when wet. Luckily they can be easily replaced.

    • @tomservo3401
      @tomservo3401 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok thought i should update incase anyone is considering the venom green with the g10 handle scales. I was worried they would be like kabars cheap hollow plastic ones they put on the becker knives but i wrong. These are solid all the way through. I actually like the feel of this knife handle more than micarta. One thing that stuck me as odd though. This knife has almost a tuning fork ping to it when hit? I own alot of 1095 knives and none have it even though they are tempered to the same rc? Anyway certainly happy with the purchase, this feels like an awesome knife to use and abuse.

    • @randomweirdo2701
      @randomweirdo2701 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rawhead Rex the ring is a thing with the g10. Linen Micarta damps vibration more than g10 so a given blade will ring more with it. A cheap fix is to cut a spacer out of black thereaband using the scale as a template. Then install the rubber spacers under the handle scales. The rubber can extrude out when tightened so cut them a tiny bit small.

    Excellent review. You might consider reviewing the Goodman Special Operations Combat Knife. An expensive knife, to be sure. I recently purchased the Goodman with their leather sheath, as I was really disappointed with the knife I've owned for years, when dressing a deer last season. I bought the knife and a top notch folding saw. Great equipment = a lot less work. Based on your videos, I'm impressed with the ESEE line as well. I'd also vote for the #6 model in this vid.
    Re the sheath's orientation. Why don't you just reverse the hanger and also shift it one grommet towards the tip. It may mount on your pack more to your preference that way.

I picked one up on Monday, gonna start taking it with me in the woods.

      The one you carry with you. Experienced woodsman the world over carry every conceivable blade out there and they all do very well with them. Ability trumps gear as long as the gear is adequate. I have the 6, i enjoy but like anything it has its limitations. The factory scales for instance are horrible on your hands for anything beyond short term use. Its heavy and bulky. Its a pain to carry on your person if you have a pack on as well. I keep a small blade on my person and the 6 in my pack when backpacking. In essence its not a great survival knife because most people wont have it handy. Go with an Esee 3 or 4 if u are looking for a "survival" knife. Because you could always have it on you.

    Say Heah, No offense, But I got lucky, I bought a Rodent 6 and I had it thinned down which they did and a great job on it, It was a little over a 1/4" it was .265" thick, Now it's less than a 1/4" now. I also had them take the top guard off, Now it looks like a Ratmandu on steroids, The steel is a 52100 Ballbearing Steel with the Busse Technology Tempering which now they call the SR101, It's Deferentially Tempered too by the way. Thinning it down, The grind was made higher which made me very happy, Because it slices and Dices and chips like a dream, After watching William Collins using an Axe to process firewood, It got me into using axes to process my firewood, But I sometimes baton with it and it performs outstanding, Yeah, I can easily say it's one of my Fav. Knife in the 6" blade. But on snowy trips, I like to go stainless and I really like taking my Fallkniven A-1, But Everytime I see a video on the Essee 6, I have to almost talk my way out of it for now since I do have a half dozen or so knives just in this size range. But I can tell in your voice you like that Essee 6, and alot of my friends that own the Essee 6 really like them, If I couldn't get my Rodent 6, I defenetly would of got the Essee 6, Oh, yeah, I remember why I got my Rodent 6, I luv Choils. Thanx for a nice review, Job well done.

    Say Heah, I have a 5 1/4" Ratmandu and a 5 1/2" Rodent 5 which are thinner than the Essee 5, and for that reason I went with my Swampies. Then the Essee 6 came out thinner and I couldn't understand that. I had my Rodent 6 Modified and I also had it thinned down because I wanted to work wood with it. Oh, I also had the top guard taken off. It now looks like a Ratmandu on steroids. I luv it. But if I didn't get my Swampies, I definitely would go with Essee. Oh, and because mine have Choils. Busse Technology also has an outstanding Tempering, and they use a Ballbearing Steel. Dilly Dilly.,,.p

    Sorry, I know you posted this vid 4 years ago and completely understand if you don't respond BUT...... yours is an opinion I would appreciate because you sound like you have owned and used several ESEE's. I have an ESEE 5, a Junglas, and an Izula II. I've never been let down by my ESEE 5, never found myself saying "wow, this is just too chunky to use" but am still wondering- would an ESEE 6 serve me better? 5 vs 6, big difference? Worth having both if you already have the 5?

    • @GearReviewDepot
      @GearReviewDepot  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Big difference? No. But there is a difference. The 5 is noticably heavier and of course slightly thinner and shorter. I really can't say one is better than the other but I seriously enjoy having both and often alternating when I take them out for the day. The 6 is thinner and longer so wood processing is easier in my opinion, even though the 5 can easily get the job done. The 5 was primarily designed to also be able to be used as a pry bar along with all the other tasks whereas the 6 wasn't... The 6 is just your ordinary woods/survival knife without the ability to pry open crates and the like. Not sure if you've seen them but I have several videos where I test tip multiple ESEE knives... The bend on the ESEE 6 without snapping is amazing.

    I want to try it out, but I live in Texas and the blade has to be less than 5.5 inches. If they made the Esee 5 the exact same as the 6, just shorter, I would buy it then and there

    • @PrioritySurvival
      @PrioritySurvival 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @GearReviewDepot  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In Texas? I'm surprised. Even here in communist Massachusetts we're allowed to have them. The way it was explained to me by several police officers, it all depends on what you're doing with it. If you're hiking, camping and other outdoor activities it's no problem, rob a bank or threaten someone with it and now it's considered a deadly weapon.

    • @PrioritySurvival
      @PrioritySurvival 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Texas State law only lists "illegal knives." Those include things like double edged knives, Bowie knives, swords, spears or any blade over 5 1/2 inches. State law only permits those to be carried on a person's own premises or in their car. However, switchblades, butterfly knifes and folding knives are not illegal.

    Say Heah, I had my Rodent 6 modified, It sound's like that would be expensive , but I only paid $30.00 over the cost of the initial price at the Custopm Shop at Swamp Rat and for the $$$ Swamp Rat are very reasonably priced for what you get and that's a Busse Technology Deferebtially Temoered Knife, Outstanding. Anyhow I had the Top Guard taken off and the blade thinned down. It look's now like my Ratmandu on steriods. Awesome. It's not only one of my Fav's, But It's a natural chopper, I team it with my 17" Hultafors Bruks Agdor Hatchet my Wicked Tough Daw and my Mora 510 as my neck knife. For me this Trio is one of my Fav. Go To Trio's even though I included my Mora 510 which I seldom use when I take this trio out. Yeah, every Essee 6 video reminds me how glad I am to have my Rodent 6 modified, serious, every Essee 6 video. ,, .

      Busse is overpriced, they are way behind with materials and design compared to other manufacturers, and the fact that they have to use differential heat treatment in their "modern hunk of steel" just shows how much that "modern" is just a marketing scam. Why pay 500-600 bucks for a 1095 sprinkled with magic nitrogen instead of just buying the same shit with 150?

      Not true.,,. Obviously your not a Busskin, If you owned one, You would feel much different about the INFI Steel, Its easier to sharpen than 3V, Its rust resistant in all climates, From the Poles to the Jungles, But yeah, I wish they were less expensive so I could buy more, Puh-lease check out the destruction video on a Battle Mistress, Badasserie, Plus I have one of my ALL TIME Gav. INFIMandu a aaRatmandu in INFO Steel, Infact I have two. I bet you would want one of them.,,.

    Howdy Tim! Great review. I have the ESEE 5, and kind of wish that I had gotten the 6 instead. Maybe I need it anyway! I have an idea for alternate carry when packing around in the park. From a company called "Hill People Gear" (www.hillpeoplegear.com/Products/tabid/762/CategoryID/1/ProductID/5/Default.aspx). They have a few different sizes, and they're specifically designed for chest carry of a handgun. I've worn mine numerous times and it's the best I've found.

    • @GearReviewDepot
      @GearReviewDepot  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've seen those around. How is it while wearing a backpack at the same time? I have an idea for a hiking/outdoor rig. Something like a tactical chest rig but instead of having magazine pouches it would have other pouches for gear and the like. Preferably open in the front. I'll have to give BDS Tactical a call, I know they have exactly what I want to put something together.

    • @rowdyron4111
      @rowdyron4111 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's most excellent while wearing a backpack. That's the main reason I got one of these. There are three or four different sizes, and they have external molle web. Here's the link to all of their kit bags (multiple sizes): www.hillpeoplegear.com/Products/tabid/762/CategoryID/1/Default.aspx I bought my son one and he loves his as well.

    • @GearReviewDepot
      @GearReviewDepot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ESEE 5 was designed by military SERE instructors as a hard-use downed pilot’s survival knife where the pilot may have to cut and/or pry their way out of a cockpit. It was also designed for military and police that are seeking and going after drug cartels and so on, they wanted something strong to cut as well as possibly pry open crates when performing large drug busts. This is what I heard from back when I used to sell knives, ESEE was by far my biggest seller. The 5 is a great knife for sure but it like all knives have it's place and where it's best used.

    • @bibigreen6533
      @bibigreen6533 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheTacticalDefender Yup I know that. Most people who use esee 5's aren't downed pilots though. Like I said it's still a great knife, they'll never fail me. Most of the time that's what I take into the woods as a main blade.

      TheTacticalDefender Okay.
      I mean I understand you’re doing this because it’s a review of the ESEE 6- which by the way is a great knife for the money. I bought 6 from TKC with their custom scales this past Christmas for all my uncles and my dad.
      I got a Fällkniven WM, which I love because it fits in my hand unlike 99.99% of the other “bushcraft” or “survival” knives. Review one, tell me what you think please?

    • @GearReviewDepot
      @GearReviewDepot  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. I rarely ever baton if at all. Like you mentioned I do that in videos just to demonstrate because I know many people do that with their blades. The Fallkniven are great blades for sure, I've played with a few but never owned one myself. If I get a chance I'll certainly review the one you mentioned. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Be well and stay safe out there. -Tim

      TheTacticalDefender Knives that rust that bad isn't the knives fault its the owners fault. Some 1095s rust a bit worse than others though, like my Mora Robust carbon, if someone is crying within 10ft of it that thing rust....LOL. But I live in Oregon and really like using Gerber's Prodigy their 420hc stainless is just as good as 1095 and sharpens really good. I'm a huge Gerber USA made fan, absolutely awesome knives I highly recommend the Strongarm...$50 Amazon can't find a better deal in that range.
