  • In this video I'll take a look at a new knife the esee 6... I'm a big fan of five inch or longer blades. So far it's very solid! I really like it! Enjoy!

Glad to see you so excited about your new knife!
When I first came across the ESEE6 I was also quite excited.
Then, one day I took delivery of my new Cold Steel Trail Master and my whole perception of knives suddenly changed. I now owned a knife that performed so much better than even my custom made Bushwhacker, that it nearly blew my mind.
This revelation made me see the absolute folly of the whole "One-tool-option" nonsense! Why would anyone in their right mind plan and prepare to go out into the wild with only ONE cutting tool? It's madness! The vast majority of people do not END UP in a survival situation (eg like a downed pilot) with only a small knife on them, or an SAK. Why would they, if they had prepared properly?
So the trick is to prepare well.
Now this brings me to the ESEE6. Where does it fit in?
Is it a "Large knife"? Well no, not really, as it only has a 6 inch pretty thin blade. So, despite the hype, it's not really suitable for heavy work, and doing what you did with the batoning is endangering the blade. If that snaps you're in even deeper smelly stuff! The chopping you did with 10 strokes hardly even made an impression - it's not a good chopper as the blade is way too light!
Is is a good belt knife? Well this is a bit closer but not the best. The benchmark knife here is the Cold Steel SRK. Let's compare them - both around 6" blade, but the SRK weighs about 4oz less! (That's 1/3 less!). The ESEE6 is 11 3/4" long while the SRK is only 10 3/4", so the SRK is quite a bit more compact. However the SRK is at the upper limit of what a medium size belt knife should be, whereas the ESEE6 is way beyond that. As you demonstrated the 6 is not so good at finer woodcraft work like feathersticking.
So, what I'm getting at is that the ESEE6 is neither fish nor fowl but falls through in between them, so doesn't really have a home.
Sad to say it, but the ESEE 5 has a similar problem, but for different reasons!
It boils down to this: one needs different knives/cutting tools for different things:
A Large knife for heavy duty.
A medium size belt knife for general camp chores.
A multi-tool knife for unexpected little tasks that always crop up.
A saw, for cutting limbs into logs, building material, any across-grain work. [This is a not negotiable!]
A drill - under certain circumstances some method of drilling holes is very important! [If possible, a brace & bits set! If not, the SAK reamer works for that size holes.]
An axe - ONLY as a luxury item, eg if you have transport (car, truck, quadbike, horse ), or for use at camp.
I hope this insight will help put things into perspective to some extent.
    Cheers mate!

Esee makes good functional knives, a bit pricey, but not my cup o tea. I owned the Ontario 7 and the Esee 6 and sold them both. I dig my Cold Steels, LT Wrights, n Beckers... But great video!

Great knife. I’m getting one to replace my 10 buck Walmart survival knife. Tho the Walmart one survived really well. I have use it to dig up earth worms in rocky soil and banged the back of it with the end of a hatchet and it held up great 😂.

Skeet you just purchased a great knife. What I like about ESSE is the warranty they offer. I have several of there knives. Take a look at the knife center website you can buy a Kydex sheath and different scales with different colors. I would like for you to do a review after a few months and see what you think. ESSE just released there James Gibson ESEE Axe if you like axes.

Especially something costing that much going out and beating it up to test it it's my problem If I get something good I don't use it I save it I know it's dumb and I am getting over it with age cause I have had some cheap stuff and after a bit It just goes in the box as soon as it fails

I don't like batoning, that doesn't make me a hater, I just prefer carrying a small blade & a hatchet.
Batoning works fine and I've done my share over the years, but if I have the choice I use the hatchet.
I hope you enjoy using the knife. Please let us know how it holds up!

I'm not usually a fan of a full flat grind on a blade that size, but it seemed to perform very well. Been thinking about getting the ESEE 5 for a long time.

That jimping is probably up that far because a lot of people would choke up on both fingers, and your pointer finger would be on the blade in that cut out spot for a finger.

Be careful who you buy esee knives from on Amazon. Esee themselves does not sell on nor endorse buying their knives on Amazon. That being said they say who they would trust on Amazon on their website, and it's only like 1 or 2 vendors!!!
