I never knew the Idoneth lore was this grim, lol. Their official colour scheme makes them look fairly bright and happy-go-lucky with a few creepy models as the Namarti but the royal folks all looking like Aquaman rejects. Didn't know they're all this moody and brutal and Volturnos is basically Ra's Al Ghul, haha.
I went all in on this army as my first one and lost interest after seeing how it's so eel heavy. I love the sculptures but I'm one of those that wants to use all of the models lol
Same, I own a deepkin army that uses only 6 eels since I wanted a Neapolitan look on the table, and I tend to win my casual games - I just wouldn't bring it to a tournament with my eyes set on a trophy is all.
I feel like Deepkin are an army I would collect in a second if they were significantly retooled in their next book. I guess not everyone actually wants them to be more Neapolitan though.
I was thinking of either getting these or Sylvaneth and this vid made me pick my faction thanks since sylvaneth is great against what my opponent plays and I really like them but Idoneth are just so fun I can’t deny them I mean come on massive electric eels weaponised sharks and huge turtle leviathans
I'm getting into AoS for the first time, heading into the store tomorrow to pick up either the start collecting for these guys or slaves to darkness, I really appreciate the videos, they've been really helpful so far!

All I want for Idoneth are more ishanaar unit that have more sinergy with the namarti or priests that actually have unique prayer. Also more deep see monsters that are not strictly fish. I feel like while the battle tome illustrate a wild variety of units (based on the realm's seas they are from) we got almost only akhelians with basic fishy mounts.

@@chibizion It begs the question, why do the thralls have 32mm bases? Why are 32mm bases becoming so much more prevalent in the new battleline? Atleast with Stormcast it makes sense with how chunky the models are and they have more than one wound, but units like Bladegheist revenants and Namarti thralls are these semi-elite battleline (more elite than clan rats anyway) but have these bigger bases... 1 wound models just seem out of place on 32mm in the first place.
@@LilyZayli knowing GW they have 32mm bases because the look best on those bases. Which is fine, but they aren't balanced around that base size which negates taking them in hordes to make up for their piddling defense.

Thanks for the explanation! Idoneth Deepkin are my first AoS army I picked up earlier this year and this helped clear some things up(like the fact that all eels is just a meme). I noticed you mentioned running Allopexes as a substitute for Morsarr? How would you go around doing that? I currently have 2 Allopexes and they have mostly disappointed when ran as both a squad(sometimes one dies to morale) or as individual units. Would you need to use Fuethann for the rerolls to wound since most of their damage comes from the mount? And is there -any- scenario where the Retarius net launcher is good? The Regular harpoon launcher outclassed it in my experience. Pardon for the wall of text, but I value your insight.
All eels is not just a meme it is the most powerful way to play the army. What IS a meme is the idea that "not doing that means you can't win." Plenty of viable lists have a little more variety than that. Sharks work well as supplements on top of your foundation of eels. I ran units of three to use with soulscryer before. I'm usually domhain to reroll ones on the charge, since I'm always counting on getting the charge with such a high movement. The shark shooting attacks are both bad, but their goal is to deal at least one damage to something to turn on blood in the water ability, as such I like three tries more than one and take nets.

I understand that the payoff on the nets is bigger for the bigger damage and the bigger number of sharks in a squad means you get at least one off as opposed to the 9 "plinks" from the other weapon. Mostly played Fuethann or Ionrach(tides of death on allies seems fun).
Oh I got the names mixed up, the 24-in range three shot ones are better, thought you meant the other ones. Yeah ionrach for allies is fun, I tried giving gotrek run and charge with it, which was funny but not like great
Very good video! I would also love list building starting from the Start Collecting boxes. Example: For 2000 points buy 2x start collecting plus X,Y for an effective army for a good price.
A great deal of start collecting boxes contained virtually nothing usable, so this wouldn't work perhaps even for most armies. There are a few shining examples like the beastclaw raiders start collecting where you literally buy three and you have a great army, but those are rare.

It was the first thing I proxied up tbh. It's like one or two warscroll tweaks away from being good - 'render 18" effect or 2" reach thralls would do it. Fun in casuals tho. Regenerating 10 thralls a turn is hilarious, except for when they all die.
Fair. And in Mor'phann, especially with his price drop and aforementioned tweaks plus the GHB20 price drops for Namarti in general, Lotann would have a kind of effective home there. Don't get me wrong: he dies like a gerbil in a speedbag, but he could turn a unit of Thralls into powerhouses

Problem is, it's missing that critical battleline buff or three that sends them over the top in most armies with that strat. snufflers for gloomspite stabbas, dans macabre for LoN skeletons, bloodfeast and ribcracker for maw gluttons, death frenzy and gnash-gnaw for clan rats, etc etc
As someone that wanted to start aos before covid happened my choice for a first army was between this one and ogor Strong eels cavalry (seriously how cool eels are) and a Shark ranged cavalry are all I wanted, considering I didnt really like the pale elfs infantry But the gameplay seems a bit to technical for me, I dont know target priority and I would like an army where errors are less fatal
this kind of flying cavalry army is super great for people who are bad at making bases. With the model so far from the base itself, it doesn't matter if you're clumsy with texture paints.
Depending on what type of KO you are, it's actually a wild ride of splitting up deployments so you each have multiple drop centers and can't get 1-shot, a game of chicken, and anything either of you touch dies. I have only played against old KO, but we were both terrified of each other, and forgotten nightmares forced his ranged to target something, but that thing was always omega dead, plus buzz saws get to ignore that. it was like turn 4 two empty wounded ships vs shitty idk foot heroes and 4 eels running to objectives.
@@HeyWoah I'm the sort of KO that usually has 15 thunderers in an Ironclad, so my instinct would be to wrap it air-tight in other units -as to not lose my egg basket straight away. I'm sure my lists will change when I grow my collection further though.

Not really, no. Despite Total War being good, WHFB really was not popular and so they did a hard reset with AoS as a last chance instead of binning the whole IP from years of being in the red. Some of the units you're talking about are currently in Cities of Sigmar as Scourge Privateers, and they have some recent lore in Broken Realms: Morathi. Their rules are a bit under-tuned and it doesn't have much of a model line of yet.

I got deeply into WH40k Mini Painting since February this year, and my two factions of choice are AdMech and Orks (because WAAAAAAAGH). I already painted 1500pts each and got a good grasp of the process. Prime, Base, Wash, Layers, Highlights, Details, Effects and Basing. Also got into Contrast Paint + Drybrush combo for my Star Wars Legion Clone Wars Core Set and got it done in a few days that way. It's time to start a new army and evolve my painting, but I cannot really commit to a third 40k one. Admech is Red+Metal+Grimdark, Orks are Green+Metal+Grimdark, lol. Space Marines are just not my thing. I need something more vibrant and "natural" with many colours that will challenge my painting skills. Enter AoS, I gues Now, I am torn between Deepkin and Sylvaneth. I have ZERO knowledge about the Lore, the Game or anything AoS. :'-) But both looks so amazing, Deepkin Peaks my interest more over all. But Sylvaneth's Half Aetherial, Half Material Tree models look like I can go ham with new painting styles (Airbrush, Slapchop, Drybrush the whole thing etc). What to do?!
Hey HeyWoah would my opponents forgive me for playing 27 eels (9/6/6/3/3) if I replace the models with Bretonnian knights of the realm/grail knights and Volturnos with King On Hippogryph? I really love the old models but their rules are borderline unplayable in AOS
Can someone clarify 2 things for me 1. I know there was an errata to the shipwrecks were you can now only take one instead of two is that true in 2021 yea or no. 2. I guess this is two questions in one the named king in deepkin ability can it be used on himself and can it be used multiple times on himself as long as it is high tide.
Sorry but, where is it said that you can have two shipwrecks? In the battletome it says you can play one shipwreck as a single piece or divide it in two pieces but nothing about deploying two full models.
pg 94, player may set up "two Etheric Vortex terrain features". Then pg95, two halves that are touching counts as 1 terrain feature. Therefore, 2 boats (or 2 separate halves if you don't want to buy an extra boat). There was an FAQ designer's commentary question about this that confirmed you can't set up 4 individual halves, but 2 full boats is still fine.
@@HeyWoah One of the lists I was considering to get into IDK is three MSU squads of eels, 2 turtles, and a bunch of sharks, lead by an Akhelian King in that Akhelian battalion but I'm worried about getting spelled to death with so little wounds on the table.
@@vinsklortho2008 That does feel a tad low on overall wounds, but swapping to volturnos (has a spell shield) and maybe limiting it to only 1 turtle (as only 1 fits in bat) then adding some more sharks or eels should get you closer to that comfortable 120w area.
I think its good to trash the list videos attached to the why plays, but the why plays are still awesome and I hope you continue them and provide the to the yet-to-patreon you's
Etherial sea. This is a magic bubble, that mixing up air and water. That's how elves can live on the bottom of the ocean without gills, and that's why fish can swim in air.
@@HeyWoah Have you found out why? If your cpu has built in graphics you can use that to easily diagnose if it's your dedicated gpu causing the coma. Just in time for the 3080's lol.
@@mattstanislen3165 more than a coma. failed to post, figured power issue. used a different psu still failed to post. Took ram out and still failed to post but no beeps and that's when I decided it was time to let it go (5 years old anyway). Also 2 of the SSDs were messed up when I put them in enclosure on a friend's comp (showed as unallocated space, testdisk couldn't repair the headers, just endless errors). GPU of all things was the only salvageable part, still using it atm (till that power issue gets smoothed over on 3080s).
I'm a little surprised at how highly this army was rated, given how poor the faction's internal balance is. I don't even play AoS and I know how screwed up the Deepkin models are.
This is definitely an example of an army that has the big AoS problem of too view workable builds and usable units in at least semi competitive play. Plus this army’s range is just too small in general. What was GW’s excuse for so many poorly written war scrolls I wonder?
I know that it is not really important but please say coup de grace (same as you said but with a s pronounced at the end) otherwise you are not saying final blow you are just saying fat punch or punch of fat apart from that really cool video and love the channel
Yes totally agree idoneth rangue is really bad, and book is really old, everything on it is useless, only eels are good. We havent any command ability, ok 1 with 100 restrictions, when lots of armys have it with 0 restrictions. No magic since our lose is the worst by far, no relics, no command abilitys, no prayers since the 3 we have are total jokes and need a 10 to do them wtf. Etc etc Everything need huge rules buffs, not point decreases. Even eels arent so amazing.
"Why play Deepkin"? Don't. They're terrible. I was lied to. I wanted horrible deep sea abomination Cthulhu men with tube worms and eels and anglerfish. Instead I got a bunch of angry fucking sea elves.

I found this all very disappointing. I pick Idoneth Deepkin because I wanted something that was completely different from what I own or planned to own in WFB and something that was clearly AoS. Lorewise I thought I was getting something like Sea Eldar, not Sea Dark Eldar. If I wanted to play soul stealing evil, I would have stuck with Chaos. I'm also not liking the gameplay and model diversity. As soon as I look through the book, I felt (outside of the leaders) there should have been a lot more different choices. Maybe I got spoiled by Chaos, but with such low model choices it would seem nearly all Idoneth Deepkin armies would seem samey and I hate they a lot. I don't mind having a few eels, but it feels wrong that they are the beard and butter of the army. Overall I've never played Idoneth Deepkin and I've only played a couple AoS games within the first few months it came out, but my reading of the book gave me similar feelings that you put in your review. I'm only in by a book and a box of archers, but I'm not sure if there is any else I want to play instead.

Now, I am torn between Deepkin and Sylvaneth. I have ZERO knowledge about the Lore, the Game or anything AoS. :'-)
But both looks so amazing, Deepkin Peaks my interest more over all. But Sylvaneth's Half Aetherial, Half Material Tree models look like I can go ham with new painting styles (Airbrush, Slapchop, Drybrush the whole thing etc).
What to do?!
Hey HeyWoah would my opponents forgive me for playing 27 eels (9/6/6/3/3) if I replace the models with Bretonnian knights of the realm/grail knights and Volturnos with King On Hippogryph? I really love the old models but their rules are borderline unplayable in AOS

Can someone clarify 2 things for me 1. I know there was an errata to the shipwrecks were you can now only take one instead of two is that true in 2021 yea or no. 2. I guess this is two questions in one the named king in deepkin ability can it be used on himself and can it be used multiple times on himself as long as it is high tide.
1. No such errata was or is in place. You may choose 2 halves or 2 wholes, just not 4 separate halves.
2. Yes and Yes.

Sorry but, where is it said that you can have two shipwrecks? In the battletome it says you can play one shipwreck as a single piece or divide it in two pieces but nothing about deploying two full models.
pg 94, player may set up "two Etheric Vortex terrain features". Then pg95, two halves that are touching counts as 1 terrain feature. Therefore, 2 boats (or 2 separate halves if you don't want to buy an extra boat). There was an FAQ designer's commentary question about this that confirmed you can't set up 4 individual halves, but 2 full boats is still fine.

@@HeyWoah One of the lists I was considering to get into IDK is three MSU squads of eels, 2 turtles, and a bunch of sharks, lead by an Akhelian King in that Akhelian battalion but I'm worried about getting spelled to death with so little wounds on the table.
@@vinsklortho2008 That does feel a tad low on overall wounds, but swapping to volturnos (has a spell shield) and maybe limiting it to only 1 turtle (as only 1 fits in bat) then adding some more sharks or eels should get you closer to that comfortable 120w area.

Yes. I've seen at least two vampire themed IDK, of course featuring Wave Chad riding a blood wave. It was sweet.

Etherial sea. This is a magic bubble, that mixing up air and water. That's how elves can live on the bottom of the ocean without gills, and that's why fish can swim in air.

@@HeyWoah Have you found out why? If your cpu has built in graphics you can use that to easily diagnose if it's your dedicated gpu causing the coma. Just in time for the 3080's lol.
@@mattstanislen3165 more than a coma. failed to post, figured power issue. used a different psu still failed to post. Took ram out and still failed to post but no beeps and that's when I decided it was time to let it go (5 years old anyway). Also 2 of the SSDs were messed up when I put them in enclosure on a friend's comp (showed as unallocated space, testdisk couldn't repair the headers, just endless errors). GPU of all things was the only salvageable part, still using it atm (till that power issue gets smoothed over on 3080s).

I'm a little surprised at how highly this army was rated, given how poor the faction's internal balance is. I don't even play AoS and I know how screwed up the Deepkin models are.
Not rating on internal balance, else it would get probably an F. Rated on end results gameplay-wise on the table for some simplified categories.

This is definitely an example of an army that has the big AoS problem of too view workable builds and usable units in at least semi competitive play. Plus this army’s range is just too small in general. What was GW’s excuse for so many poorly written war scrolls I wonder?
I know that it is not really important but please say coup de grace (same as you said but with a s pronounced at the end) otherwise you are not saying final blow you are just saying fat punch or punch of fat

Yes totally agree idoneth rangue is really bad, and book is really old, everything on it is useless, only eels are good.
We havent any command ability, ok 1 with 100 restrictions, when lots of armys have it with 0 restrictions. No magic since our lose is the worst by far, no relics, no command abilitys, no prayers since the 3 we have are total jokes and need a 10 to do them wtf. Etc etc
Everything need huge rules buffs, not point decreases. Even eels arent so amazing.

I found this all very disappointing. I pick Idoneth Deepkin because I wanted something that was completely different from what I own or planned to own in WFB and something that was clearly AoS. Lorewise I thought I was getting something like Sea Eldar, not Sea Dark Eldar. If I wanted to play soul stealing evil, I would have stuck with Chaos. I'm also not liking the gameplay and model diversity. As soon as I look through the book, I felt (outside of the leaders) there should have been a lot more different choices. Maybe I got spoiled by Chaos, but with such low model choices it would seem nearly all Idoneth Deepkin armies would seem samey and I hate they a lot. I don't mind having a few eels, but it feels wrong that they are the beard and butter of the army. Overall I've never played Idoneth Deepkin and I've only played a couple AoS games within the first few months it came out, but my reading of the book gave me similar feelings that you put in your review. I'm only in by a book and a box of archers, but I'm not sure if there is any else I want to play instead.
