  • Five Nights at Freddy's has SO MANY fans! Naturally, some fans go as far as to create their own horror videos based on the series. These are known as "FNaF VHS" and have been around for quiet some time, however, with the recent release of The Five Nights at Freddy's movie many people are now saying VHS ruined how we view the franchise. Is there any truth to these claims? Did FNaF REALLY Ruin Its Fandom?

    FNAF VHSs are not ruined, they're just overly repetitive. Nowadays most of them use the same template of "Nightguard goes to the pizzeria and everything is fine until 3m in when the animatronics start moving and kill them" rinse and repeat. The horror factor is nonexistent because you already know what to expect each time.

      Some fnaf vhs changes characters destinies, or even mixing with the walten files style, so i woundt say its repetitive, so the fnaf franchise woulf be repetitive because every game the animatronics can move around and kill us

    I think it ruined the people outside of the fandom’s perspective of the lore . They are great videos but people really need to know the difference between fanmade and actual content .The rockafire doesn’t exist anymore because showbiz pizza time replaced them with Chuck E. Cheese after they couldn’t get the rights to the band so it has nothing to do with their looks lol

Plenty of folk would say Chuck E Cheese's animatronics were ugly too, appearances had nothing to do with it.

    The VHS videos I like are the ones that add more depth to the tragic elements of the series. These are lost children's souls after all. They only have violent intent because guards remind them of William. The blood and gore when pushed to the extreme seems unnecessary and sometimes disgusting. What makes a lot of FNAF's initial lore (1-3) so scary is that it's all implied. This leaves it to the viewer to interpret it, and our minds make things far more terrifying than they could ever be. Also i liked the tablefort scene because it felt like the trapped children got a chance to be children again. It's heartwarming yet tragic.

    In my opinion, it didn’t kill the fandom, but it is overrated as hell. People act like it’s the scariest thing they ever seen. It is literally just a bunch of screaming effects and the distorting images. Also, some of them are just overedgy. Fnaf should be dark but it shouldn’t be stupid.
    Another problem with the other VHS tapes is that they don’t even try to do anything new. They’re basically the same story as the as the OG VHS tapes (except that one ennard fought the military and had like 999 souls in him but we don’t talk about that).
    They only do 1-3 and take like a tiny element from 4. Most of them don’t even touch SL and 6 which sucks cause they have a lot of potential for some scares.
    It also doesn’t help that the original vhs is kind of ruined since the creator is a terrible person.

    I personally think that these didn’t ruin anything. The fandom has had this divide over the years where half of it love it for the horror, and another love it for the characters, viewing the animatronics as people with personalities, something that SB and to some extent the movie has hammered in. So, naturally, the VHS community is simply satisfying that need for more horror-esque elements that the series has strayed away with.
    That being said, as a fan of the tapes myself, I don’t think FNAF should be gory, nor am I asking it to take itself seriously, but at least, I want to be frightened by it again, the same way me and many others were frightened by the original 4 games. The dark atmosphere, suspense and even the humour was something that was finely balanced. But, nowadays it tends to skew to the other end of the spectrum sometimes.

    Thank you! Finally, I see a video telling us that fandom does not ruin the game in some variant! FNAF VHS is a great addition to fan made projects, and you are correct about the official media not needing to fit up to the expectations of fans. If we all met the expectations of other people, we wouldn’t be happy, now would we?

  • @somemadnessfan4763
    @somemadnessfan4763 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

    honestly some series can be terrifying, but most just boil down to distorted faces with loud noise, excessive gore, the same 3 games, and repeating phrases like "I SHITTED IN MY PANTS" in the background while an animatronic head with realistic eyes is in the middle of the screen
    and yes i do believe that these videos have somewhat brainwashed the fanbase into thinking FNAF was/should be like this. I mean literally look up any "old FNAF fans vs new FNAF fans" or "FNAF is for kids!" video, most show "old FNAF" or "what FNAF is actually like" as those edgy analog horror videos, and most of the time criticism for SB and the movie for not being scary usually use those analog horror videos as an example and go "THIS is what it should be like!!"

    Tbh i always felt like the “the VHS tapes made everyone think fnaf is gorey” was just an excuse people came up with to discredit people who had the “theres not enough gore in the movie” critic ngl
    Theres very few analog horror series’ i seen that put suvh a heavy focus on gore and the fnaf vhs are included
    (If you want an example of a series’ that is heavily focused on gore then the painter is right there)
    I always felt like they more of expanded on already existing body horror & gore elements in the games (which i mean-the og animatronics litrealy have dead kids inside them)
    As for the designs-i get what you mean but i never thought the fan designs were too unbelievable for a kid to like
    I think the difference is the designs in the VHS make complete sense for the time period their supposed to be in-while SL just look like a high tech weapon despite the game taking place before the first game , i can believe the company made them to be appeling to kids but accidenty ended up with them looking uncanny instead (i hope im making sense here i struggle to exine why i think these designs work better and why SL doesnt 😅)
    Just look at unintentionally creepy kids toys like porcelain dolls & “little miss no name”

      I've seen someone saying the VHS tapes makes people think the kids are evil murder machines. And I'm just blinking there like "What?..." The VHS tapes were one of the few interpretations that potrayed the kids as confused, tragic characters who don't want to kill the night guard and help him instead. They're nothing more than vengeful, angry characters in almost all of the FNAF songs and fanarts. It's apparent that they didn't watch a single tape.

    FNAF Analog horror can be good, if it wasn't so overused nowadays. This is coming from a FNAF 1 fan, who remembers when Purple guy was named Vincent, Mike was the bite victim, and 2 killers was still a prominent theory btw. FNAF Analog horror used to be good, until the cookie cutter 'spOoOoKYiIiy GuUuTS aND BlOOoD' kind of analog horror became common place. The only games taken into account with the FNAF VHS tapes are 1-3, somtimes 4 and SL, never anything beyond that. Which i can get, as it IS really difficult to fit everything together, but Jesus christ, t r y atleast. Have the main characters fight back, hell, that's something from the movie i really enjoy, Mike and Vanessa weren't treated like idiots, they knew that they had to defend themselves.
    Tl;dr, FNAF VHS tapes can be fun, if they're done creatively, are an interesting take on the series, and don't have 'omg guys blood and guts' as the topic of every episode.

    say what you will about squimpus' VHS series (if that's the one you refused to speak about), but in my opinion it still stands as one of the best ones out there, ignoring the terrible actions of the creator behind it. 'sound response check' still creeps me the fuck out. battington's remake just doesn't hit the same way and I don't understand personally why most fans treat it like peak analog horror. I must admit that I am biased though because the original series was my introduction to FNAF VHS and therefore I'm more emotionally attached to it.
    and while it didn't ruin the fandom, it did ruin some fans' expectations for the movie, because it made them believe that the film would be a 2-hour long VHS tape with more gore than the entire saw franchise.

    • @justanotherguy560
      @justanotherguy560 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      What I like about battington's series a lot more than squimpus' is how it still feels like something that could fall right into place in a canon piece of fnaf content, while still trying a different approach. You see, squimpus made his with the mindset of "I'm better at making fnaf content than scott, I'll show them.". Hence why we have that version of afton, who was just an asshole and didn't have any of the creepiness of canon afton. Unlike squimpus' series, which came from a place of resentmet of the series and his own ego, battington's series came from genuine respect for scott's work. He made the series with the mindset of "I love the series. I'm gonna put my own spin on it while also respecting the original content and lore."
      Thats the fundamental difference between squimpus and battington, and the difference in quality. Also battington is just the better animator.

    Well it really depends on who's watching. On one hand its thrilling because of the horrifying atmosphere that naturally comes with it, but on the other hand there are those who either aren't into that or are just likely to get annoyed of the repetitiveness of the concept. Frankly its a case to case basis on the person and their individual tastes. If people don't like it they don't have to though if this is really blowing up into some big thing as clearly shown you made a video about it because its starting to become a problem then all I have to say is if some of you people don't like this stuff dont watch it there's no crimes being committed. The point of fandom is to explore the genre dedicated to it and make something out of it, the very nature of a fandom is exploration and creativity. Generally not all of it is pleasant, and honestly there is a lot of toxicity on internet fandom in particularly the FNaF Fandom (Trust me i've dealt with it first hand). Though at the same time its become a gathering for those who just genuinely enjoy the franchise and the people making the VHS variants mean no harm at all. Am I saying you can't have your opinions? of course not but at the same time it's honestly childish to make such a big deal out it I mean seriously do you have nothing better to do?.

    What an interesting video! I know that I myself am a FNAF VHS content creator but I do have to agree with you on several points here. While I really do enjoy analog horror and FNAF VHS tapes, there's no hiding that it's definitely after warping alot of peoples views on how the franchise as a whole should be portrayed as. Tbh I don't think the VHS tapes are necessarily the problem, it's just how they're used in conversation and how people are constantly bringing them up in an attempt to sorta 'prove' to the newer fans and just fans in general that this is what the series was and should be like when in reality it was never like that at all. This was overall a fantastic video and I look forward to what you have in store next

    Thank you for making this. This is the LARGEST issue with the fanbase right now. People equate this franchise’s quality to its ability to satisfy needs imposed upon them by these fanmade projects. These projects have skewed the general audience’s view of fnaf and completely tarnished its identity. I’m not saying that they’re at all bad or slanderous or anything if the sort, I’m saying that the people watching them are more enticed by the idea of a more easily approachable Fnaf. The majority prefer these cheap spook videos compared to the in-depth and (granted) convoluted world of Fnaf. Being that now the fanbase is dominated by these surface level “fans” that ignore the most characteristic parts of Fnaf, they are degrading the franchise for not being what they’ve been led to expect.

      Wasn’t that the whole point of The Silver Eyes? To make the lore up to that point more approachable and digestible for confused fans or casual audiences? Also not many of them are super gory to begin with. Memebear is really the only that used immense gore and even they admitted to being done solely as edgy shock value.
      Squimpus’ VHS videos had disturbing imagery sure, but I felt they gave an interesting perspective on the what the children possessing the animatronics were going through without going too far mind you. Also, much like The Silver Eyes, reworked the lore of the first 3 games into a more digestible narrative while still leaving plenty of room for speculation and mystery that fans enjoy. That, to me, was what made Squimpus’ videos stand out in terms of fan content, even if it did at times take creative liberties with the official source material. It was a small number of fans on both sides, yourself included I would dare say, that thought it was JUST the gore and creepy imagery and interpreted it in their respective ways.
      The in-depth and convoluted lore has always been a huge part of FNAF, that doesn’t people still can’t criticize it. It’s why we got things like The Silver Eyes, and actual narratives in later games, because Scott knew that people were pulling their hair out over it. It’s why many people didn’t like the movie, because it was just too convoluted to do the first 3 game’s typical means of storytelling in a feature film format.

    Im not done the video but in the defense of the Rockafire Explosion: i think the reason they dont fit on fnaf animatronics is because the design qualities are inconsistent. In my eyes, most of the Rockafire-ified FNAF designs only carry over the facial mold. But the faux fur outside of the face and body that makes them approachable and the eyes that actually fit their damn eye sockets are both important design aspects to making the Rockafires look less creepy. That one foxy example where he's in plain view (i'll add the time code after this: 8:22 there we go) only reads as scary to me because his body is so segmented and the endoskeleton insides are so visible alongside such a small head and eyes that barely fit their socket. That shit would creep *anyone* out, let alone a child.
    I can see why they kept these traits, i totally do, they gotta be creepy and stuff, but I think trying to pass this off as a fault of the Rockafire aesthetic(?) is a huge misrepresentation of the band and their history.

    Honestly, the fan designs people make for a lot of these analog horror videos help make these creators stand out in a way. Yes you could use the official designs to still make content stand out and make it feel more like actual FNaF like many of the older VHS videos, but when making and using a redesign, it helps give a new light to the characters in various ways never seen before and can show how various designs of a single character can really affect the video itself. One example is a really cool style of the Nightmare Animatronics someone made that I'm sure many remember from all the spam tik-toks and such but it gave the nightmares a new design concept being a flesh suit if sorts, they are extreme stylized compared to tye official designs, but it feels fresh. And that's a major thing. If everyone used the same designs, then the FNaF VHS videos would all feel the same to a degree. These new designs allows creators to express their skills and creativity.

Scott's/Steel wool studio's designs are just what i've grown to like) It's a series set in the era of vhs tapes, so they make sense in universe. However analog horror has ran to the same problem creepy pastas had ran into previously: too much similar content and repetitive tropes.
    There's so much more analog horror now and most of them use the same tricks without much variety other than maby the setting, that it's audience is starting to get fatigue from it. It's completely expected, not everyone's a film director nor otherwise good at telling a unique and compelling stories.
    My personal issue with vhs/analog horror is that it's fundamentally flawed for the era it's consumed in, since it can't take as much advantage of the internet due to it largely preceding it.
    Digital horror doesn't have this limitation and is even easier to work with, but people are sleeping on it. Flash games, personal websites, social media, internet archive, youtube itself and much more can be incorporated into digital horror, which brings out even more possibilities for scares and immersion that analog horror can't replicate.
    These could also be tied to fnaf! Imagine for example of someone attempting to revive the fazbear brand in the timeframe between fnaf 1-3 by launching a virtual world like club penguin, but something went wrong due to remnant, something fnaf world related, just ghosts or something and now there's an entire new world of far more familiar horrors to explore.
    Also analog horror can still work, especially with fnaf, but people need to create more original stories and not rely on certain tropes as much.
    But these were just my thoughts about the subject. Thoughts of someone who is only in the horror scene for fnaf and love for aesthetics of Halloween, who would rather see a wholesome story disguised under a spooky seeming arg than every arg being horror themed.

    How would I heat up the milk if I only have cerial in the bowl? Should I heat up the cerial and eat cold milk? or what the heck? What if I need refill cus I didn't put enough cerial? it's not allowed cus you said cerial before milk? What is the friking difference anyways? I also don't want to heat up the cerial, so the milk just magically should float and wait patiantly in the microwave, being heaten up and than I pour it on the cerial, when I extract the magical milk? Or should I make 2 bowls dirty for no reason, so the cerial is in it first?

    By my opinion, VHS aren't scary. When some weird things happen there and some loud sound occurs, I'm confused by that, not scared. Whenever I see some VHS of FNAF, I'm like "another spooky video" and when I decide to watch it, I'm not scared, because I already expect that. When you use too much horror aspects, it's no longer scary since you already know it's going to be there.

    I don't really like fnaf vhs personally
    It's just not something I can get into because it doesn't feel like fnaf, bonnie falling over and giving a thumbs up when 20 whatever minutes ago he killed a guy for being in his janitors room, that feels like fnaf
    While fnaf vhs is a great (while imo overrated) alternative for fans, I don't think The series should follow in its footsteps
    And I find it beyond annoying when people complain the official material isn't like the vhs series enough

      FNAF can be funny at times, but it wasn't all just "exotic butters" and "buff Helpy". That's the meme side which, ironically, also gives an unrealistic image of the franchise. It's in the middle with a ( honestly, sometimes pretty messy ) dark story mixed with corporate jokes and dark humor.

    Honestly, VHS didn't ruin FNAF, and it could steer the franchise into a better direction when it comes to the supernatural and the psychological horror aspects, which the older parts of the franchise had. The franchise as of now is trying to appeal the majority of the fanbase, and that majority is either children or fans of the animatronic characters themselves who sees these machines as people with character and personality, or the meme fans or artists and content creators who make wholesome content, rather than appealing towards fans of supernatural horror and psychological horror. Appealing to those fans can hurt the horror aspects of the franchise, and it's no wonder why people think FNAF isn't as scary anymore as it used to. And we can clearly see what the movie itself is trying to appeal towards. But trying to appeal towards the horror fans a bit too much could also turn away new fans, which means less profits, eventually killing the franchise, especially since many horror fans I've experienced are extremely gatekeeping. The only benefit I see in turning away the majority of the fanbase is no more weird shippers or the furry artists. IMO, FNAF should have a balance between its more emotional and humorous aspects and its supernatural and psychological horror aspects, because FNAF, in its core, is a drama story, not a gorefest. And making things seem more lighrhearted can really put you off when things do get scary, which is why Doki Doki Literature Club became popular in the first place.

    • @SillyNephrite
      @SillyNephrite 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      As a FNAF fan/animator myself, I wholeheartedly agree. I enjoyed seeing the FNAF movie for its more fun and light-hearted moments, but I really disliked the fact that the movie wasn't scary. I can definitely tell that the franchise as a whole is trying to appeal to the majority. And I think the horror aspects of FNAF have really been appreciated only recently, when many veteran fans grew up away from fun SFM animations or memes, and became mature and more enthusiastic towards the scarier aspects of the franchise. It's only after Help Wanted and the book adaptations where VHS started, which was a time when many consider FNAF isn't as scary as it once was, and Security Breach's release wasn't helping either.

    • @lecursedturtle9385
      @lecursedturtle9385 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@SillyNephriteI agree with that statement too. Children and the sillier fans have always been the majority of the fanbase, and the franchise has been trying to appeal to them throughout these past few years, and they have been around since FNAF's inception, but veteran fans who were once in that phase eventually grew up, and it's only recently they began appreciating the maturer side of the franchise.

    I absolutely love FNAF VHS. I believe this is a similar situation to the whole "separating the art from the artist" debate, only in this case, it's separating what the fans can create from what the actual source material is known for. Fans seem to forget that FNAF has barely shown any gore and or blood. It's portrayed through FNAF 1's game over screen, the 8-bit mini-games, Springtrap, and through dialogue.
    It's left ambiguous and is never really shown outright to the player. This ambiguity can lead to people having false expectations for the games and the movie. However, because it's left ambiguous, it can lead to some very creative horror moments. It's for that reason that I love FNAF VHS so much. Luckily, this is only a small portion of the fandom that's making such a huge fuss over this topic, so this doesn't gravely impact the direction of the franchise.

    Ima be real for a second, personally this video is kind of an L take, this video comes off as a bit preachy until at the end when you say how you respect the creators. Bc for my own personal bias I personally had fond memories of the FNAF VHS, it was like looking through a window into a version of FNAF that truly embraced horror and did not appeal to children. You can tell when it was trying to appeal since Security breach, I know wow what a take but its kind of obvious that now they are toning stuff down and trying to make everything confusing so the modern fans have something to grasp. To ppl that like Security Breach, I get it. Its not a bad thing to like something or to not like something. So I understand the mixed feelings but by the end of the day I think we should just chill the hell out, ppl that think that the FNAF VHS actually ruined the fandom are delusional, if anything the weird Spring-trap ships ruined it LMAO! Anyways video was edited well, I just feel as if you should have let it cook a bit longer.

    FNAF VHS can work, but I feel that the horror does not come from the blood and gore, but the suspense and atmosphere. So the audience is more uncertain and anxious that SOMETHING will pop up without then knowing.
    Aside from that, the whole analog horror thing is eh. It can work if done properly, but we should be careful before turning it into a dying fad.
