Learn how I recreated Superman's iconic heat vision powers in this in-depth Nuke tutorial. I've been the comp supervisor in charge of Superman & Lois at Refuge VFX for the last 3 seasons - this tutorial reveals some of the compositing tricks I've learned during that time.

There sure is! AE has all the tools you’d need, might have to download a few plugins for optical glow and cooler distortion

Thank you so much for creating a rundown for actual Hollywood VFX, I've been a little frustrated in the past with VFX tutorials that just produce fairly pitiful results, but seeing how you firsthand created them is really great! And I'm exited to be able to get better with my own skills.

Perfectly structured tutorial. I appreciate your work. Just a couple of comments if you don't mind.
Unless your team is also working in a Left to Right way, I would not do it this way, but the traditional Top to Bottom. Not a real issue, but it would also help to crop or limit the bounding box right after the merge also, cause if you are working in production with something like 4K-6K footage you will kill the renderfarm (ask me how I know :) ). Finally since you already have noise in a channel, why not use this everywhere else, instead of copying it? Just add it to the merge as an "Also Merge" layer.

Thanks! No Houdini stuff, I haven’t learned it yet but would like to given the time and use it for high end simulations.
Man you’re amazing and Nice Tutorial but maybe explain why you did somethings on your tutorials please, it helps those watching to understand more. One is, why didn’t you just add sharpen to the image but you put it in between log2lin nodes please.
He did that to protect the image from any artifact cause filtering oper usually comes with downsides like ugly coloration artifacts so it’s standard to protect the image by placing the sharpen, softing, MoBlur, or even grade node between a Log2Lin node but in some cases, mostly grade and MoBlur nodes, unpremult and premult are used.

Great stuff! I found your channel recently and loved it. I’m about to graduate in two weeks and wanted to ask how you got started in the vfx industry? I’ve been looking around alot but I’ve found it difficult to find entry level work. Especially remote since I’m not near any major city.
What did you study specifically? Right now is rough because of the strikes that recently ended, almost every Hollywood project has been delayed. But that means in the next few months we hope there will be a deluge of new projects to work on. Just be persistent!

@@vfxwithryan use all the job search sites and have a good showreel or website prepared. Also if you know anyone who has connections use those! And just be persistent, usually they’re really busy but if you keep emailing every week they’ll be more likely to think of you when there is an opportunity

Why can’t I find the shuffle copy node I’m on nuke x 14.0v5 ,is there a way around this ? 09:00
Hehe that’s cause it’s an old node, Foundry wants us to use shuffle for everything now, which does work too but differently.
How did you match the movement of the blender effect with the laser.
I animated some empties to match his eye location and the parented the emitters to them. Then animated the rotation of the emitters to match his head rotation 👍
Did they give you references for the heat vision?
They showed us a few shots they had done already yes, but we were also referencing Man of Steel because the vfx in that movie were so cool
@@Graphicalninja I’m curious, how does a VFX house determine the budget for shots?
@@jamesottman6559 There’s lots of factors, I don’t bid shots myself but they take into account the length of the shot, complexity, CG elements needed. And we have to bid based on the clients budget sometimes, and find smart ways to do things if their budget is limited.
I also worked on S&L S3 doing all sort of VFX, I dont know your real name, perhaps we worked together
