    Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z

Sophomore slump happens when all eyes are on you. Pitfalls of success. Cure: fear no one. No stars. No dots. No pedestal. No pit of despair.

I definitely struggle with confidence as a writer. Of course, I don’t think Amazon reviews necessarily reflect the quality of a book. For example, my first novella got nearly universal praise from hundreds of beta readers, but when I advertised a free download of the book on Reddit, I received an influx of mixed to negative reviews, some of which were from people who hadn’t even read the book. That drove me into a deep depression that lasted for days, but I had to remind myself that I was advertising in the wrong place. Rants on social media should not determine the quality of a book. Ever since then, I’ve been very careful about who I advertise my books to, even if that means I can’t cast as wide of a net when advertising.

Why the hell would someone who hasn't read the book feel inclined to comment on its quality? I don't get it... Their opinions aren't even relevant if they didn't even take the time to read it!

Dude hush lol. You got around 500+ reviews & most are 4.5+ - pretty sure anyone would really really appreciate that. Great job! I’m impressed! Working on one myself...might have to talk to you a bit! Hope any other projects go crazy big/hit the eyes they’re supposed to

Thank you! But I do want to make sure people know those reviews built up over time. I think too many writers get discouraged when they launch something and it isn't an instant life changing success. This is a marathon, not a sprint. :-)

Wrote my memoirs and self-published on Amazon... thought the world would read my story, it would go to the big screen and I could continue as a writer... boy was I a dreamer. today I'm still writing with zero accolades. I will say that I wrote my first script couple years back and placed in the Page Awards 1/4 finals. I still write scripts today but just to prove I can do it. Not for anything else other than that. Maybe I'll submit another script here soon.

For me with 4-5 books completed (at least 3 of them I’ve thrown away during a move), it’s the completing part that ends it for me (including editing and even external readers’ comments). I simply have no interest in publishing it, and when I worked with indie publishers, I found them to be highly technical and incredibly dispassionate for the creative aspect of a finished project which confirmed an assumption I had about publishing. The other aspect is that people cannot help the way they feel, and because of a person’s sensibilities and sensitivity the particular art they create (be it a book) is made. Some artists are okay with the comments of people who may have never written a book let alone 5 but who have self-anointed themselves as critics. And frankly, I have no tolerance for that. The point: like the funniest person we know may be funnier than any paid comedian, the best authors may not have been published. As your guest implies, it takes a pretty large and specific skill-set to publish a successful book. I owe a lot to people like Andrew, as I’ve read over 3,000 books…99.9% of them non-fiction.

What part of being a writer scares you most?

    • @atallguynh

      Being ordinary or boring.

    • @elichilton7031

The part of being a writer that scares me the most is the writing. The very act of writing and all that goes along with that. The mechanics, the art, facing oneself and how that manifests itself through imagination and creativity, the drafts, the feeling of the endless goings on of the piece, getting through the self judgement, believing in the words, etc. Even when you feel your done, your still not done. All of this and more. It's building a mountain and then climbing it, and still working on not falling to your demise. Everything else feels like gravy compared to all of this stuff. In a way the rest does not matter when you have just went through all of that to finish a piece of writing, but I know that, in way, this isn't true because someone's has to read it, see it, or make it. I always compare this to something I heard Albert Brooks say about writing jokes and I am paraphrasing, "A joke is never finished until someone hears it."

The gatekeepers, honestly. I have written a book, Im gonna selfpublish and done most of the work myself. From experience, I just imagine how harsh it can get if it they deem it low quality. I can deal with it, but not looking foreward to it. I just know self published authors are looked down on and it's a small country, so it might be more difficult to be given a chance rather than if I went traditionally. Just scary, thats all. I will still do it though 😄
