While I'm glad there's another alternative for people, you're exaggerating some of the "differences," lol... Virtual Desktop is also fast. The speed of getting going is not a bottleneck with either Virtual Desktop or Air Link IMO: with Air Link, once you've launched a game, it shows in your library in Oculus Dash. Even if you've never launched it before, you just navigate to Steam and press 'play' on the game. It then auto-launches SteamVR and you're in (and then next time you have a shortcut straight to it). With Virtual Desktop, it's even easier. You just use the Virtual Desktop "Games" tab to launch the game (and it picks up both Oculus and Steam games) and voila! the game launches with SteamVR. No need to open SteamVR first. Regarding the audio sources issue, you don't actually have to manually go to your desktop and switch sources. You can do it from the SteamVR menu: there's a section for Steam Link, and in that section there's an audio setting for turning "mirroring" on and off. Just toggle that button and it fixes the audio. But. As you said, it doesn't switch the audio source back when you quit. Virtual Desktop does, plus gives you more options for audio settings. ;) Outside of that, nice video and thanks for sharing it. Have you dived into the settings for the app yet? Given that some people are complaining of issues with Steam Link, I've wondered if it comes from changing the settings too much.

Was planning on saving up for a valve index because of that, but if this works without needing an ethernet connection, then I'd rather get a quest 3.
Unless your home has really thick walls and bad wifi reception, you should be fine without an ethernet connection. A good WiFi6 5400 router is all that's needed.
You can try the old school way. - run USB cable from the laptop and stick it into the backpack. Put the backpack on and make sure you have enough battery juice for whatever you playing.
My biggest issue with air link (other than being limited to 90Hz) is that every time I open my desktop my computer absolutely can’t run it. It chugs so bad. Playing games is completely fine but once I open my desktop it basically crashes. Had the exact same issue with steam link. Virtual desktop does not have this issue and I can use my desktop as well as play my flat screen games in VR.
Nice video as usual :) don't know about the time for VD though, since i have my streamer app on my PC always at startup - i just put on my quest headset when my desktop is at sleep, start VD on Quest, PC starts and I login to to pc using VD, can't get much quicker than that :'D I will try out Steam-link though, always good when more actors are taking notice and implement "their" way - more ways for more people!
I'm running into this problem rn don't know what to do it says about the vr link driver encountered a fatal error error failed to create/reset encoder in videoamfenc::submitframe()
I don’t the startup. I can jump into vd faster than that launched. The stuff you criticized was initial setup. Vd starts up faster than this. But I’ll try steam and see.
Not necessarily. If you have been fine so far with your standalone VR experience, then you are sorted. This feature is for those who already have a PC with an existing Steam library. It's a first-party alternative to Virtual Desktop and Air Link. So definitely don't feel the FOMO about it.

How powerful does the router/internet connection need to be? I can't really hook up my laptop to my router because my parents also use it and is in the living room. Was planning on saving up for a valve index because of that, but if this works without needing an ethernet connection, then I'd rather get a quest 3.
Unless your home has really thick walls and bad wifi reception, you should be fine without an ethernet connection. A good WiFi6 5400 router is all that's needed.
I only got a 5Ghz router, but it still works perfectly most of the time with everyone using it. Thanks though.
You can try the old school way. - run USB cable from the laptop and stick it into the backpack. Put the backpack on and make sure you have enough battery juice for whatever you playing.
Do you need a cable
Im able to launch the ganes but at the menu of said game they would buffer and become unplayable. How do i fix that
After i press connect on steam link nothing happens, idk what is wrong
I love that it took longer to download the app than it did for me to load up and get into a game
It's like nobody ever heard of launching Steam games from Oculus PCVR app
I always get error code 200 when playing I just bought half life alyx and expected to play it through steam link and nothing seems to work
I’m connected but when I try to play Microsoft flight sim on steam VR but it says headset not connected when it is 🤷🏻♂️
if your computer crashes will your game stop working
What is that samurai game?
After I put in the code it didn't do anything. I'm just in the meta environment
what kind of mod of Half Life Alyx was that? I loved the game and didn't know there was more to play.
How do I fix when it says your router is connected wirelessly
Please help, somehow I don't have "steam streaming speakers" drivers installed so I can't hear any sound from my headset. Can someone help me?
Yeah, not that easy for everyone... Just tried and I just get an error on the Quest saying it can't connect even though I was able to do the number.
I don’t the startup. I can jump into vd faster than that launched. The stuff you criticized was initial setup. Vd starts up faster than this. But I’ll try steam and see.
Now i just need a PC...
Not necessarily. If you have been fine so far with your standalone VR experience, then you are sorted. This feature is for those who already have a PC with an existing Steam library. It's a first-party alternative to Virtual Desktop and Air Link. So definitely don't feel the FOMO about it.
@@bazanime I want to play HL Alyx...
@@greatestytcommentatorThen you will need a PC since that is a PCVR only game. That's a big decision, so be sure to do research about what you need. 👍🏾
@@greatestytcommentator I use a gaming laptop to play it and it runs fine. Only occasional resolution and frame drops, but this can be more because of my router not being a dedicated one.
I just have a Mac 🤡 so will this work now? Because according to the steam website it’s back compatible with mac
is there a way to download app lab games on pcvr?
I’m Mac can I still get steam Vr
I finally have a gaming pc on the way! What pcvr only games should I play first?
It depends on the genre you like, but a good start would be Half Life Alyx. It is an awesome game in many ways.
Works with Link Kabel????
Does this work on Mac ? M1 ?
No
Hey you won’t believe this. I followed you for years but utube made you disappear and now you have just turned up. Don’t know why but I have loads of videos to watch. Omg. And I pay for my subscription too
What about perf comparing with VD with VDXR and AV1?
Can u help is says HEVC Hardware encoding what do i do?
Anyone else have an issue where everything breaks because "the PC must be connected to the router via wire. Wireless connection to router not compatible"?
WAIT WAIT...so it means vrchat finger tracking?!
That sweater is WILD
My steam home was blurry however, I was finally able to run Thrill of the Fight with no crashes. Never happened with Virtual Desktop. OTOH, I could not get Aircar to run on Steam link and that is my show case app I use to show off VR. However, I use Thrill of the fight every day so, I think steam link will get better.
I tried too link the the steam vr but every time it tells me. PC connected wirelessly to the router and it says it doesnt support that how do i fix it?
Connect your pc directly to the router?
I'm not really seeing what's confusing here.
I have D link.. paid $100 for that and works great..nit sure with Steam link if jts better or not?
thank you
