No Ted, no David, no problem. Shari and I press on with our journey through the Divine Comedy. This time we tackle Inferno Canto V. Where you can support the channel : / grailcountry
36:11 My translation has "Suppose the Sovereign of the Universe were still our friend, we'd pray He grant you peace..". It suggests that their prayer would be useless as God is not their friend.
43:51 The Anglican position has tended to be that the pronouncing of forgiveness by the priest at the general confession of sins in common worship is exercising the power of absolution, and that private confession of specific sins to a priest is an option for those who, having confessed directly to God, are still troubled in conscience. I guess that would be an indication that for some people, perhaps for certain sins, God requires that one confess to a priest in order to have absolution.
37:33 Is "Time" an accurate translation here? Also, time is not connected to the Fall, as time began with the creation, which Scripture records as happening in successive stages. Time is connected to being a creature, with a beginning and an everlasting duration in time.
Do you think its really possible to be in love with someone and not have some degree of possessiveness (like jealousy) in real life? Surely it is natural and correct to feel betrayed and heartbroken when your partner is unfaithful, but does this not show your own feelings of possession over them? I think Dietrich von Hildebrand said something about this, with the possessiveness of the ego always present in human relations, with love being stronger the less possessiveness there is, and weaker the more possessiveness there is. I know the ideal is two people selflessly giving themselves to one another, but I think it is an ideal that can never be fully realized this side of the grave.
34:19 I don't think Dante is implying salvation is attainable by those in the inferno. Being required to own up to one's sins is not the equivalent of the contrition necessary for God's forgiveness.
31:28 Yes, so true!
It's an old theme in folk songs, such as the Scottish The Three Gypsies/ The Raggle Taggle Gypsy.

Suppose leaves it open actually, which is consistent with Dante's overall approach.
30:11 The Church has not forced anybody into celibacy, but has chosen to call her priests only from among those called to celibacy.
Am I the only one that feels like Jordan Daniel Wood has the David Foster Wallace look?

Yes, I think that's right.
Whose translation are you using? It seems freer than the one I have.
John Ciardi, which was recommend by Richard Rohlin, but I also have the Hollander translation on hand.

I wouldn't expect you would. And, Dante doesn't make any direct claims, so much has he opens the question.
