Fascinating! I'm surprised that even Pages-being Apple an' all, beloved of designers-makes it so difficult and picky to get to special glyphs. But, as you say, worth the effort for special projects. Thank you, Gary! 👍🏻

It used to be a lot easier in the early versions of Pages. But Apple found a new hobby in making things more and more complicated with every new version.

TYSM for this video! I found it easy to follow and went through all the same steps on my 2022 MacBook Air. Unfortunately, all my typography window says is, "Glyph variants are not available." My typography window looks slightly different than yours (it has fewer options), but it looks and functions exactly the same in pages as it does in text edit. Is my computer older or newer than yours (would that matter?), or do you have additional software installed to make this possible? I purchased a font with many glyphs and can't access any of them. Your video looks like the solution to my problem, except for my problematic typography window. Any helpful info. would be appreciated. Either way, TY again for the great video!

This video is several years old, as you can see. So things will look different. If it says no glyph variants available, it means for that font. So use another font.

@@macmost TYSM for your reply. I can see the glyph variants under the Repertoire section in the font book (the same glyphs for the two fonts you used as examples, and for other fonts), but when I open typography, it says "Glyph variants are not available". I bought a font with variants, I can see them in the Repertoire view in font book, but pages and text edit 'typography' windows both say "Glyph variants are not available" any advice on other places to find an answer? I can't believe that because I have a mac, I can't use glyph variants. That seems preposterous. ty again- I appreciate your expertise.

@@a.b.2957 Not sure why it is showing you that. Keep experimenting with them. I don't use glyphs like that on a regular basis, so I'm probably not going to have a solution for you, sorry.

@@macmost you've been the most helpful human on the internet- only thanks from me! I appreciate your responses- thank you very much. Your video is great-. I'm a computer idiot and I was easily able to follow it and experiment further on my own in a way I was not finding by myself. TY!

Thanks for this, Gary. I use Font Book when I'm doing design work with SVG files. I've usually looked for the glyph and typed the letter/number combination from Font Book into the design program I'm using. Is there an easier way for me to do this?

Hi Gary, I usually watch your brilliant videos in the Podcast app, but recently, the app is extremely slow to download the video, to the extent that it is unwatchable. I have also found the same when trying to view them directly from your website with exactly the same problem. I use high speed broadband and the TH-cam version never has any problems. Do you know what is going wrong? I use an iPad Pro and iPhone X.

The podcast video is the one that you are watching at my site. They are on the same server. So it sounds like the connection from your ISP to that server isn't very fast at the moment. Watching at TH-cam is a good alternative.

Is Font Book an application I have to download?

No. It comes with macOS. You already have it.

Probably in common with all software applications, there are quirks (bugs!) within particular features of Apple Apps. However, what is really frustrating is that Apple often never gets around to fixing them. If you encounter some aberrant behaviour, search the web for information/workarounds, you sometimes find reports that are years old and despite multiple version updates have never been fixed. This seems pretty shabby to me because Apple must be aware of them, but seems to have a "don't give a damn' attitude.
A striking example is multi-select in Pages. You can't select multiple discontinuous blocks of text by using Command-select, which is a pretty basic capability for any text editor. If you look on the web there are reports of this problem going back many years, and almost disbelief that Apple wouldn't feel seriously embarrassed about the deficiency and sort it out. However, years pass and the situation remains the same.

True about the "bugs" but also not true. Apple fixes tons of bugs. But if you go looking for examples, of course you will find some that haven't been fixed. Same for any operating system or software. As for non-contiguous selections in Pages, that's not a bug. That's just not a feature of Pages. It simply doesn't do it. A bug would be if it is supposed to do it, but doesn't.

That's the most confusing video I have ever watched. I tried to follow the actions Gary was doing on my copy of Pages, but I gave up very quickly. For one thing, Pages on my machine is not the same as in the video. Is there a book that explains everything you can do on Pages?
