Ladies, please don't psych yourselves out before your test by reading other women's comments the way I did. It made my anxiety go through the roof. Sometimes ignorance is bliss when it comes to things like this! As a 24 year old virgin, my first pap didn't hurt at all! It felt totally fine, the best way to describe it is like putting on a super huge tampon. It lasts like 30 seconds and then, all done! I understand every woman will react differently, but you won't know until you just do it yourself. It's important we all get this done, sexually active or not.

sour cream just had one done today due to a yeast infection.... Most painful thing ever ffs my doctor couldn’t even finish the full procedure because I was way too tense.
i had my FIRST smear test a month ago and it came back with a severe amount of abnormal cells. im 24 - i got the letter 6 months before my birthday. in a matter of days i was seen by a consultant and was treated accordingly. if i didnt go there was a chance this high amoint of cells could have developed into cervical cancer. it is so so important that you go ladies. x

I literally just got mine done and it didn’t really hurt. It mainly just felt really uncomfortable. Just a tiny bit of cramping. I was so scared to do mine as I don’t want a random person all up down there and the fact people keep saying it hurts so bad. But it really didn’t. And it honestly wasn’t that awkward. Coming from someone who’s extremely socially awkward and really shy. People just need to get over their fear and go. It literally only lasted a total of 3 seconds of cramping. And the whole smear lasted maybe 2 minutes at most. It was super quick

It’s all in your head! Can’t say this enough, it’s the build up to your appointment that causes you so much anxiety. I was so nervous before my test and thinking the worst, the test was painless and quick thanks to the hands of my gentle doctor. You have to relax your body as much as possible as it will definitely be more uncomfortable if your body is tensed up. It surely felt weird as you are not used to it but it was not pain nor uncomfortable. Just relax and remember that this test is life saving and worth it! Am currently waiting for my results and pray for the best
I really wanna thank you for showing this I was literally crying out fear not wanting to go in for my appointment and this absolutely made me feel more comfortable!!!!
I had my first pap smear today at age 37. I had so much anxiety to even go but i knew it had to be done because i wanted to make sure i was ok. The doctor office i went to was so nice. It was all ladies. All of them made sure i was comfortable and relax and walk me through it. Once the doctor put the speculum in me i didnt feel no pain just a pressure but the doctor was so gentle. It just a weird experience because someone is looking at your private area. But it was not bad at all. Ladies go and do it not as bad as you think😊. It could save your life.
I'm 26 I had a smear test done I've had pelvic pain but I'm not in a romantic relationship. I haven't gotten results yet. My discharge was clean no bacteria or yeast. My cervix was a bit red... My. Physician is actually a friend of mine. It's not awkward. I don't care if she sees my body parts.
Might I ask how it went? I'm also 26, I'm a virgin and haven't had a pap done. I was supposed to last year but they double booked me and I never rescheduled due to nerves.
L T for most women they are a bit uncomfortable having it done, I just had my first one done today and it went by in a breeze, please do it for your health! You want to make sure you don’t have cancerous cells
Sweetie, 5 minutes of awkwardness of someone down near your bits compared to potentially not knowing/ something being wrong is totally worth it. Yes its embarrassing & yes its awkward but the pros outway the cons 10 fold! Please, please, please go get it done 😊 stay safe!!
Well, I just had one today. It didn't bother me that my doctor was touching my vagina. What bothered me was the spectum going in. They open you to where a Mac truck can be driven in. That's the most uncomfortable part.
I had mine 2day. It wasn't bad at all.. just felt pressure of course.. and had 2 pee after! I advise all young women to go. It's one thing to get caught up reading everybody else's comments. The fear and dread will prevent you from scheduling an appointment. In 5 minutes, it's all over. Take that to 24 hours you have in a day. A little but of time makes a difference.
Just had mine done for the first time today. It was painful and I did cry during the procedure. There was a break in the middle because of my pain tolerance and asked if I wanted to stop or continue, but I asked them to continue because this test is recommended and like others say, it can save you.
Yes!!! Get your test, it’s so quick and could save your life! Mine was abnormal and it’s been terrifying but I dread to think where I’d be in 10 years without the test.
life off the paliister family I had a colposcopy which is like a smear but they use a microscope instead of a brush and take some pics. They might take a small biopsy too. Visit the Jo’s trust forums for more info and good luck xx
I haven't had a smear test yet but I do have experience with a speculum (those plastic beak things) and recommend taking a couple of paracetamol before your appointment to help with discomfort!!
BeckaBN aww smear test aren’t bad, just a weird/uncomfortable feeling. The spectrum should be the least uncomfortable.... if it hurts ask for more lube!!! X
@@Nicole.92 It's different for every woman . Plus in the UK at least the nurses at the GP don't tend to stock a great deal of various sizes in the speclum and lube can affect the results . If it hurts you should tell them and they will stop . Best think to do is try and let yourself be as floppy as possible . If you are really struggling you can go and see the GP who may be able to give you something to help you relax . But pleae
Omg thank you for making this video! I’m calling the hospital tomorrow morning. I’ve got a letter a couple of times a year, for 4 years now, about getting a smear test but I’ve been so scared. Never really hear anything about the procedure so the unknowing blew it up to some horrible thing.
For anyone scared to take it I feel you, I recommend to just relax, It doesn’t hurt, it’s uncomfortable because it’s not something you are used to BUT you will be okay, it’s a quick and easy procedure
@@hannahdyson6391 thank you for your comment, good thing is she doing one now as well as me....and negativity is not good instead of giving a positive comment to make a person more comfortable of going but as always some people just show negativity....thabk you for your comment! I have a question, what if I’m a virgin and feel discomfort when a finger is inserted? It’s feels so uncomfortable when an inch of my finger is inserted and I’m so scared to get this done😭
Hopefully, you will have a great OB/GYN who can put you at ease while they are doing it. Especially before they start to insert it. Mine always tells me to take a deep breath and it relaxes me.
Thank you for posting this. I had a smear test today and tried to explain what happens to my daughters, a 9 and 7 year old. We watched your video together and answered questions when they asked them. Thanks for such an open video, it's important young girls and adults alike know not only what to expect but that having a smear test is a normal and mostly painless (just a bit uncomfortable) experience. 👍👍👍
This video was so helpful! Since I’m in college and recently became sexually active, my mother has been encouraging me to make a trip to the OBGYN. I have some anxiety when it comes to not knowing what exactly goes on, so I asked her about pelvic exams and pap smears. Even though we have a pretty close relationship as mother and daughter, my mom still has trouble when it comes to talking about things like feminine health. To make a long story shorter, the way my mother explained a pelvic exam to me was: you get naked, the doctor opens you up and literally clips a piece of your uterus off. I don’t really blame her for the explanation because she’s not a medical professional and most likely just went off of what she felt during the exam and what her friends described to her😂. But this just stresses the importance of doing your own research and listening to trained professionals. I’m definitely not scared like I was before. Cheers!
I went for the first time 3 years ago after ignoring previous reminders. I had spent years being terrified but it was not what I imagined. I wasn't relaxed and it didn't feel great (was actually painful) but whatever discomfort/pain I felt ended in a minute. It was over very quick and I remember thinking 'is that it?' and felt great that I had done it. The nurse is great and will help you feel less embarrased. I am going for my second one tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to it but i'm not terrified as I remember last time it was over before I knew it. Update - I went for second test. My period is late and due anyday now. This time round I was completely relaxed and ready to get it done. Unfortunately I could not complete it. It felt more painful than last time and even breathing through it did not help. The nurse suggested coming back after my period. I do want to go back and hopefully will be able to have a better experience next time.
Thank you so much for this. Sounds strange just watching your reaction makes me feel so much better - I’m only 21, but this does help my anxiety around this subject! Xx
Honestly it doesn’t hurt, a little uncomfortable but nothing compared to what dealing with cervical cancer could entail. Get it booked in girl, it’s over in seconds! 😘
Everyone is different...mine hurt so bad..but i also know people that laugh the whole time....im a 14 year old virgin so it was going to hurt...but he was not gentle at all and didnt explain what was going to happen so i was tight but he just jammed it in....it was so painful
@@eileenespringer420 I'm sorry, hun. I'm 33 yrs old and they have always hurt for me. I hope they aren't always painful for you. Maybe you should find a new doctor, one that you're comfortable with.
I’m 22 and not a virgin but I haven’t had any intercourse in a few years. Every time I try to get the exam done it’s too painful. 🤦🏻♀️. I went again yesterday & it was too painful they couldn’t do it. I feel kinda embarrassed because of the fact that I can’t be able to get the exam done because it just hurts so bad.
I have to get a pelvic test soon and I’m very scared, I’m 14 and have never had anything put up there not even a tampon all these materials look so intimidating, I’m worried about it being painful!
I’ve tried to have it done before; I dont know I just get so tense and plus I’m a virgin. I’m not used to having something in my bits. The first time i tried to get it done I was tense and it was painful, so I couldnt get it done. I scheduled one for next week, so I’m nervous. Did anyone get it done as a virgin and if so, do you have any tips for me? Please and thank you.
Step Jay I got my first one done 6 days ago: I was a nervous mess and she couldn’t get the whole thing in. But she was very sweet about it. And said she was the same way as well. Although, I know I didn’t give any advise... just let your doctor know how you’re feeling and if you want to stop/take a break.
Bohemianfashionista yeah I finally got through it. It was uncomfortable and painful but that’s because of me not relaxing enough. I notice that even though it hurt, it was more bearable when my knees were pointed outward as much as possible. 🤷🏾♀️ well can’t wait until next year yay lol
31 and going for my first on Friday. I’m terrified. I’ve let anxiety get in the way for so long and now I’m terrified that the results will come back abnormal 😢 thank you for sharing your experience.
Thank u for this video i have my first one today im 29 n keep putting it off and nervous as hell this video as helped me a lot as ppl have been nagging me none stop to get it done due to ppl in my family have ab normal cells ect
@@sarahvincent3431 Because with all due respect telling someone that they should have had one in a scolding way doesn't help anyone . I am glad that your daughter started right away , for you and me and your daughter it's not a big issue . For some women it is . I just urge you to have a bit of empathy x
Had my first one today. The speculum was freezing and very uncomfortable going in, then I literally GASPED when she opened it inside me 😂😂😂😂😂😂 then the brush was the worst part!!! Nothing could have prepared me for the pain. But my nurse was so lovely and had me laughing, so proud of myself for not crying.
aww just watched this video I had my letter come for my smear test im 24 years old and going to give my doctors a call on Monday it has really put me at ease hopefully I will be okay when I have my smear test done im abit nervous because its my first one wish me luck for mine xx
I had my done last year it was very uncomfortable but the procedure is done quickly as long you stay relaxed and calm hope this helps for first timers ❤🙏
I have a male gyni, he's the sweetest ever never made me uncomfortable, never ever hurt I usually get an internal ultrasound aswell which takes longer than the smear and the pressure is uncomfortable but again dosent hurt just feel pressure. Smear I don't feel anything usually he's in and out and don't feel it.
My first Pap smear exam didn’t hurt. It just felt like I had a cold popsicle inside, and it was really quick. I got my second one today and it hurt!! It felt like they were pinching me down there. I don’t know why it hurt so I asked the doctor and she told me because I’m tiny...I know there’s nothing wrong with me because I also got my results today from my pelvic ultrasound and a transvaginal ultrasound done and it came out good and nothing bad. No cyst or anything like that. Did it hurt for anyone to get the Pap smear exam??
I’m 28 and I’ve never had one.. gyno wants me to have one tomorrow and I really don’t want to... I might cancel the apt. I’ve tested negative for every STD, including kissing diseases. Don’t drink, don’t smoke and haven’t had unprotected sex in years... I’m not embarrassed, I’m worried about the pain and possible infections that follow.
I got my smear test Friday and never had one before and I am scared because I haven't had sex it gone hurt me more and draining the blooding after that
Yes . Even us Virgins have to get them done too . It could possibly save your life if they are able to catch any Pre Cancerous Cells early on .. rather than too late ..
This video has helped me a lot. I have vaginismus so smears are very terrifying for me. I got my first and only smear done 3 years ago this January, and now I have abnormal bleeding so I am going in tomorrow and I think they will end up doing another one so I am mentally preparing myself. I'll be taking an ibuprofen beforehand, however I doubt it'll help because even a muscle relaxer for my first one didn't help at all, but if I'm able to stay relaxed I am going to reward myself with a treat. :)
@@23magneta I had a friend go with me and I held her hand! I squeezed it a lot lol I wasn't relaxed at all and was very shaky but my dr was super patient. I also find letting out a deep breath and focusing on wiggling your toes helps a lot too!
Are you able to relate the test to something. I want to be healthy and take care and check up on my body but I'm just scared bc I've never done it before.
This is just too traumatic. Wish Professionals would stop saying it might be uncomfortable and be bloody honest for once and tell women that some women may find it uncomfortable, but some may find find it extremely painful, at least that would be honest and women wouldn't be under false ilkusions then. 🙁
Hammy Cats69 I just got my first one yesterday. It didn’t hurt really for me it was just uncomfortable when she was first putting it in. @Little Bear 91 you can get the test younger if there’s family history...it may be uncommon but it has happened many times. Cancer doesn’t discriminate against age.
I've had 2 done and each time was painful, I'm not sure if it's just a New Zealand thing but we have to get it every 2 years, when you turn 20 and when you turn 22 and so on... but I definitely find it unbearable for myself but others find it easy
Wiggle your toes! I find paps very painful, but my doctor told me to wiggle my toes. That distracted me enough and relaxed my muscles so she was able to take a look.

Exactly
What happens to you now hun coz it abnormal I'm going tomorrow and I'm very nervous about the smear results
life off the paliister family I had a colposcopy which is like a smear but they use a microscope instead of a brush and take some pics. They might take a small biopsy too. Visit the Jo’s trust forums for more info and good luck xx
No
I haven't had a smear test yet but I do have experience with a speculum (those plastic beak things) and recommend taking a couple of paracetamol before your appointment to help with discomfort!!
But pleae
if speculums are painful for you you shouldnt be wearing tampons or having sex..... all the same type of sensation
@rebeccavanrooyen1641 if you haven't used tampons etc that's why speculam is painful.
SO MUCH RESPECT for this video!!! So important
Omg thank you for making this video! I’m calling the hospital tomorrow morning. I’ve got a letter a couple of times a year, for 4 years now, about getting a smear test but I’ve been so scared. Never really hear anything about the procedure so the unknowing blew it up to some horrible thing.
Got my pap test done today and just like the doctor said it wasn't painful it only took a minute or less. Your video helped alot.
For anyone scared to take it I feel you, I recommend to just relax, It doesn’t hurt, it’s uncomfortable because it’s not something you are used to BUT you will be okay, it’s a quick and easy procedure
You're incredible doing this Sophie, I'm 27 still haven't had a smear and I'm going to book it in! Xxx
Hun u should of had one but this age
@@sarahvincent3431 The main point is she's having one now . Attitudes of " you should have had this done by now " doesn't help
Im 29 never had one either im about to have one tomorrow....im kinda nervous i tought ut maybe uncomfortable or hurt...
@@hannahdyson6391 thank you for your comment, good thing is she doing one now as well as me....and negativity is not good instead of giving a positive comment to make a person more comfortable of going but as always some people just show negativity....thabk you for your comment! Dosent matter when a person is doing it i mean of course should be sooner but at least some people are finding courage to finally go right?
@@lilianhernandez4903 Exactly .Berating people for not going helps no one .
I am glad you are both going , make sure you treat yourself to something afterwards e.g meeting up with a freind for a meal / shopping trip .
Don't be frightened to say stop ethier during the exam at any point it's getting to much .
Look into vaginal dilators, practice with those first. They are life-changing! And ask to get the pediatric-sized speculum
Thanks for doing this hunny. I just got back from my test today and you’ve inspired girls not to be afraid ! Always go ladies it can save your life
Yessssssss get it done girls!! It's not the best thing in the world to be doing BUT IT CERTAINLY ISN'T THE WORST!!! Thank you muchly for this Sophie.
I know I'm young but I'm still very nervous for this... any tips I could use so I can relax?
Cheers!
I have my first pap tomorrow and I’m super nervous but your video just made me less nervous so thank you!!
Lency Chaidez how did it go? Mine is May 3rd and I’m a little scared
Ananda Wilson how’d yours go? Mines in 2 days and I’m scared! Any pain?
Thank you for posting this and allowing a safe space in the comments to have questions answered and discussed I really really appreciate it.
You’re a total legend. Watching videos like this puts me at ease. Thank you for being so real and helpful! #DontFearTheSmear indeed babes x
Thank you so much for this. Sounds strange just watching your reaction makes me feel so much better - I’m only 21, but this does help my anxiety around this subject! Xx
So nice of you to do this Sophie! 💗
In the US, or at least at the place I go, they recommend it at 21 years old and then once a year
I just had mine at 2 months short of 25. Glad I finally went!
I’m 37 and going for my first test in March I’m so nervous.
Laura Lockman 🙏🏽🙏🏽everything goes well. I’m also 37 haven’t had one since I had my kid 10 years ago. I’m nervous to go too.
I've heard this hurts a lot if you're not sexually active and I've been putting it off cause of that. I want to do it but im so scared of the pain...
Honestly it doesn’t hurt, a little uncomfortable but nothing compared to what dealing with cervical cancer could entail. Get it booked in girl, it’s over in seconds! 😘
It does hurt yes I’ve had 2 smear tests done and both have hurt so much. I’m not sexually active currently
Now I have an idea about what will be done next week. 🤭 Thanks for this. 😘
I have my first gyno visit today and this helped me tremendously with my nerves. 😊😊
never ever commented on a youtube video but wow thank you for sharing this, it is so important :)
Thank you so much for doing this video!! It really made me feel more comfortable!
I don't understand why it hurts for me every time. It's not just uncomfortable for me, it's straight up painful. Why can't I just be normal.
This is so brave! Well done Sophie💗
It can hurt either way wether your a virgin or not.. I’ve had 2 smears so far and both have hurt so much. I’m not currently sexually active
Wiggle your toes! It helps relax your muscles down there and distracts you a bit. That’s what my obgyn told me!
I went yesterday! Good for you. #healthyisthekey
Bit late to the party but bravo to you for raising awareness of cervical screening and awareness of the test itself .
Hannah Dyson all I said was my daughter had her at 25 that’s all ,,hows that not nice?
@@sarahvincent3431 Because with all due respect telling someone that they should have had one in a scolding way doesn't help anyone . Women have all sorts of reasons for not going , people who have been raped may not want one , same with a woman who was sexually abused as a child . She may have anxiety or learning difficulties.
I am glad that your daughter started right away , for you and me and your daughter it's not a big issue . For some women it is .
I just urge you to have a bit of empathy x
Thank you for the video! Really gave me peace of mind!
Thank you for sharing this! I have mine booked for next week
Sophie, THANK YOUUUUUU so much for sharing this 🙌💞
I am going to have this test tomorrow and I was so scared because this is my first time!
OMG. I had one recently... and NO ME GUSTA. But I'm not sexually active so that could have been an indicator to it. My vagina is still shooketh.
Hey sophie thanks for sharing I was always terrified to get mine done but I'm not so nervous anymore by watching your video
I have a male gyni, he's the sweetest ever never made me uncomfortable, never ever hurt I usually get an internal ultrasound aswell which takes longer than the smear and the pressure is uncomfortable but again dosent hurt just feel pressure. Smear I don't feel anything usually he's in and out and don't feel it.
im glad they change it to a plastic one the metal one was bloody freezing
This is a very important test
Its keeps u healthy 😊😊
My first Pap smear exam didn’t hurt. It just felt like I had a cold popsicle inside, and it was really quick. I got my second one today and it hurt!! It felt like they were pinching me down there. I don’t know why it hurt so I asked the doctor and she told me because I’m tiny...I know there’s nothing wrong with me because I also got my results today from my pelvic ultrasound and a transvaginal ultrasound done and it came out good and nothing bad. No cyst or anything like that. Did it hurt for anyone to get the Pap smear exam??
I’m way too young for a pap smear but am terrified to get one in a few years...
Love your videos, your Instagram 😍
Can’t wait to see you on Monday for the live podcast ✨
I’m 28 and I’ve never had one.. gyno wants me to have one tomorrow and I really don’t want to... I might cancel the apt. I’ve tested negative for every STD, including kissing diseases. Don’t drink, don’t smoke and haven’t had unprotected sex in years... I’m not embarrassed, I’m worried about the pain and possible infections that follow.
You should get one regardless because it tests for cervical cancer. Even people who are not sexually active could get cervical cancer.
I got my smear test Friday and never had one before and I am scared because I haven't had sex it gone hurt me more and draining the blooding after that
I’m so going this video really helpful cheers❤️
This was very useful, thank you so much.
I had mine today, glad I got it done, but it did hurt😢
I’m suppose to get mine in a couple of days but I’m sooo scared that it’s gonna hurt. How did you manage through it?! 😭
I have to go today and i'm terrified of flinching when they use the brush
GREAT reason to flinch!!! Totally warranted!!!
is pap test recommended for virgins?
Yes . Even us Virgins have to get them done too . It could possibly save your life if they are able to catch any Pre Cancerous Cells early on .. rather than too late ..
@@shanice_a I comprehend. but if I going to get done,I’ll won’t lose my V…🤔😅
How did you get yourself to relax enough to have your first smear done? No doctor has ever been able to fully insert a speculum into me so far.
@@23magneta I had a friend go with me and I held her hand! I squeezed it a lot lol I wasn't relaxed at all and was very shaky but my dr was super patient. I also find letting out a deep breath and focusing on wiggling your toes helps a lot too!

definitely don’t fear the smear!!!! xx

Just fear the "scraping" sensation you feel like a blade cutting your core down there.
I’m 19 and had one yesterday. Well tried to, they couldn’t find my cervix and I was crying because it hurt so bad. Had anyone else had this?
Ive had a cotton swab in my vagina for std test and that was painful for me so im terrified to have something touch my cervix.
Thanks for the video.. Im going today and I am nervous
Just make sure your relaxed the vagina is a muscle so it tenses when your tense it may hurt you more or it may not like you said everyone is different but I do think it’s a necessary evil
@@hillarybanks2773 I can't have it as I have Lichen Sclerosus, Vaginmismus and Vulvodynia which makes any gynae tests and exams impossible without heavy sedation and doctors over here wont put you to sleep for a smear.
So I have to reject all offers as the pain is too much to handle due to my conditions. X
I just went to my doctors appointment and I took my Pap smear test and it didn't hurt at all
Just asking --------
Do you have to shave *down there* before a smear test?

I'm 15 and have never had one. Closest thing I've had to one is when I had a forensic examining after being sexually assaulted and had swabs down there. I'll definitely get my smear tests. It wouldn't cause as much stress and sadness as forensic ones are after being assaulted/raped.

Sharnalee Maaka any tips to be able to sit still?? Cause I can so relate with you?
Wiggle your toes! I find paps very painful, but my doctor told me to wiggle my toes. That distracted me enough and relaxed my muscles so she was able to take a look.
I have been having irregular periods so I might have to have this done. Question is it painful. Also I'm a little embarrassed. I somehow feel week bladder. What happens if I feel like I have to urniate during my test and can't hold it in. Also I heard sometime you feel nausea after and I don't want to be sick to my stomach
