I'm so happy to have found your channel! I'm definitely subscribing. Growing up I had a friend who was Romani, she and her family taught me a lot of the language, some stuff they would try to keep private as I wasn't part of the travelers, but I learned very quickly, plus one of her brothers had a crush on me so he taught me more so I could maybe be accepted and a part of the whole community one day, not just their family alone.
They were great people and I only was able to know them for a little over a year before they moved on to somewhere else and it was the nineties so my friend and I were penpals for a few months, but time moved forward.
Hearing the language again in quick bits makes me very happy and nostalgic. I miss my chosen family, as they were the first people to introduce me to that term. If I ever see them again, I want to be able to speak with them, like we haven't missed a beat.

I know that most Romani people have typical names for the country they live in, but I've also heard that some have a Romani name in addition to their casual-use first name.
Many of the websites I've found about the topic tend to feel unreliable. I'm not Romani myself, but I'm working towards a writing career, and would love some tips on naming Romani characters, and what mistakes to avoid.

@@MP-ux1dn No, there is no direct link to that location. The DNA seems to point to Punjabi and nomads of the area but it also doesnt mean 100%. All sjib romani are similar to both languages and hindi as well. Traced back to a language that all three came from, Sanskrit(NOT Gujarati). Romani didnt even know that they came from south Asia until non romani ppl traced it back and now the DNA also traces it back to South Asia. Even white roma carries around South Asian dna(unless they are not roma by blood). South Asia is as much as we know, the particular area is still not found, because Roma ancestors didnt all leave, some stayed and possibly moved around South Asia, making it harder to trace(they also became their own groups, and are not nor ever were Romani). Haha, I'm not sure which is the original though. Nice-tukay or Palee-kerav-tukay. In terms of spelling, there is no official way to write Romani, and people tend to use the alphabet of the language they have learnt in school to write it. I have used English phonetics to help English speakers learn; however, if I use the IPA then it would be easier as more phonemes are available as there are more symbols. I would love to learn further from you. I have blood lines deep to Romany gypsies but my family tends to pass the history as short lived rather than the “bigger” more notable bloodlines that came later in life. I will subscribe but if you ever had time ir additional help I would love it

As a Rom adopted from Hungary, this means a lot to me. We Roma and other Romani need to not only learn our own languages and dialects, but we need others need to know about us and our history. I would love to learn the Lovari and Romungro dialects or just general Hungarian Romani dialects.

Christopher Quinn There are influences from Hungarian in the Eastern-Slovakian Romani dialect. For example 'Karachunja' - Christmas
