A final fix for a Bose Soundlink II Bluetooth speaker that is blinking red

- I want to talk about a #BoseMiniSoundlink II Bluetooth speaker. It hadn't been used in some 2 years and would do nothing but blink red. Some have had some luck with the Soundlink I. Its a final fix for a Bose Soundlink II blinking red.
This was not even shown in the device's instruction guide as something it would do, but turns out to be protection mode. It works now!
And here's the ifixit link noted in the vid: www.ifixit.com...

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! (SEE BELOW: I added an updated explanation to your video since it's been almost 3 years you uploaded this amazing video.)
I watched a few other "how to fix the blinking red battery light" videos but none went as far as yours did with the last step of basically "re-updating" my Bose Soundlink Mini 2 by pressing the following keys: A, D, V, Up arrow, Down arrow.
When you go to the Bose website (May 2022), it has been updated and I didn't see any other choices or menu box to select the firmware version like in your video. For me, it just said that my speaker had the latest firmware. But I took a chance and pressed "A, D, V, Up arrow, and Down arrow," regardless of what was on the screen AND ONLY THEN did the menu box showed up (basically putting the website into the "Advanced Mode)! (By the way, the letters do not have to be in all-caps when pressing so no need to press down shift key while pressing those keys.) I RESELECTED the latest/current firmware and click on the update/apply button (I forget what it said but it was green), and the website REDOWNLOADED the latest firmware (which my Bose already had but re-downloaded nonetheless). ONLY THEN did the blinking red light stopped.
Just in case, afterwards, mine then went into a SOLID RED LIGHT. So I just tried resetting both the soft reset and factory reset (as described in your video), and unplugged my Bose from the computer and REPLUGGED it directly into a wall plug. AND THEN, like magic, the red light turned into the slow blinking AMBER light, indicating it was FINALLY CHARGING and working properly!!!
I really, really appreciate you taking the time to upload this very helpful, problem-solving video, and I also thank the ifixit link person!!
Great add, thanks!!
WHAT GREAT INFORMATION YOU HAVE SHARED SIR THANK YOU, I'M FROM NAIROBI, KENYA. TRULY WORKED AND I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
Oh my goodness. I was going to throw out my speaker after having the same red blinking light problem! I also had the same experience as Hyanne Park - after doing the firmware update, I did the soft and factory reset, then plugged the speaker back into a wall plug. The red light turned to a slow blinking amber light and now my speaker works again after being dead for over a year! Thanks so much for posting your video!
@@AKJeeper Glad it helped...
This exact method worked for me too!
I never comment on youtube videos ever, but today you have saved me from a quarantine nightmare. Thank you kind sir, thank you.
Appears I missed this comment. You are most welcome...
A million times thank you! I let my speaker collect dust for 1.5 years because I didn't know how to fix it. Looked up so many videos on troubleshooting and what not, but your video was the one to help me finally fix my speaker. Thanks a ton!
Glad it did the trick!
People, if the normal procedure doesn't work like my case, I noticed that around 60% of the update (or so) the speaker came to life, but then when the process finished it went to flashing red again... so I did the procedure again, but this time when the speaker came to life, against all recommendations and odds, I disconnected the USB... yes.. and now it works. Thanks a lot to this guy and I hope I help someone else with this extra step. Good luck.
Good show, thanks. I think it will...
same for me, updated it and still flashing red light. updated again then disconnected it when it came to life. it even says battery 100%. connected it to phone and played music for about 1 minute, it died again, then back to red flashing light. very frustrating.
@@nivexius did you try to charge it while in use? at least you can use it and doesn't go off.
This is the case for me, however it won't let me try the procedure again. I keep getting an alert saying "No dice. There are no available updates for this product" and the light is still blinking red.
Me pasa lo mismo, pero cuando lo desconecto dice, batería baja y se vuelve a apagar
Please never delete this video - it has saved my bacon twice now!!!! Thank you very much!
You bet!
Absolute legend. I’ve had my bose for 3 months and was having the problem of it not charging. Tried exactly what you said by pressing the middle bottom for 10 seconds…. It’s working now. Thank you so much. Very much appreciated. Thank you.
That was absolutely the best. I can't believe BOSE can get away with not advertising this clearly to allow this to be dealt with in a simple fashion. Thanks !!!!!!
How do you know I don't work for -- oh never mind. Glad to help...
Simply THE best instructor; you speak slowly, calmly and clearly so that i was able to follow you step by step. All other videos had failed to solve the "red blinking light" problem but you did it and my 4 year old model is now working and communicating again. Thank you.
My pleasure (tried to type that as slowly as possible! :-) )...
FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART, THANK YOU FOR THAT LITTLE HACK AT THE END. I couldn’t get to work for one whole sad year until this video. I had missed these speakers dearly & was devastated as I contemplated on throwing them for a new Bose Revolve. Now I’ve saved myself $250 and I’d much rather keep these speakers! GOD BLESS U SIR
Very happy to help...
Thank you! My speaker was dead for like 1.5 years, haha! On a Mac, Bose updater said it was updated. Did: A, D, V, Up, Down, updated with same firmware again. Then it went in to solid red light. Did hold "multi function button for 10 sec" and did not remove the power. Every light started blinking and now it's charging again and connected to my phone and playing music! Amazing!
Glad it worked...
Unbelievable. This fixed my Soundlink Mini II. Even Bose technical support does not know this! Thank you!
You're welcome!
I've literally been banging my head off a wall with this speaker, and this is the thing that actually worked. You my friend, are supreme for posting this. Many thanks my friend.
You're quite welcome...
Thank you! I thought my speaker was dead, I tried all of the things listed on the websites, your solution finally fixed it! greetings from Costa Rica!
Happy to help! Went through the same thing.
Legend. Tried all the other fixes that did nothing, now it’s running again for the first time in over a year.
Perfect...
This was the key for fixing our Bose Soundlink Mini II. While the website did not look the same, the instructions still applied. Pressing ADV up arrow, down arrow while holding the shift key activated a download and the speaker is now flashing yellow and charging! Thank you for sharing!!
You bet...
Thank you so much for this - I really thought that my beloved Bose speaker was a write-off until I found this video. Worked a treat!
Happy to help...
Glad to help. Duplicated -- sorry!
Top result - from a flashing red light and dead speaker to an updated speaker that worked... thanks
Glad to help...
This video is exactly what i've been searching for! My speaker has just come back to life after months of trying so many different things! I just followed the steps outlined and it worked a treat! Thank you for this
Glad it worked...
Man aren't you a saviour, tried it and it worked after months and months of despair, Bose wanted me to send it for repair
Glad to help...
Thank you!! I left my speaker in a hotel over two months ago. They posted it back when I remembered where I left it. It arrived back with a flashing red light when I tried to charge it. The steps in the video brought it back! Thank you!!
You're welcome...
Same as everyone else - this was the only fix that actually worked for me. I'd tried similar things before with no joy but this was the magical solution I needed. Cheers - new lease of life for my speaker
Glad to help...
This is extremely helpful. I was completely at a loss and was about to throw my speaker away. It’s now working perfectly again. Many thanks!
You're welcome...
I have to add my name to this long list of people thanking you! I ran through re-flashing the update and it worked as reported. Also, this was my wife's Mini SoundLink, so now she thinks I'm great! Thanks again!!
Well, never impacted a marriage before! A new high! You're welcome...
My one got drained completely and was dead as a doornail. Downgrading/upgrading brought mine back to life. Thx
Glad to help...
After hours of searching and finding the same four point guidance I was about to abandon my soundbar. But your patient advice took me past the standard answers and solved the problem. Brilliant!
Thanks. Glad to help...
Perfect. Clear, concise video that worked for my Soundlink II when nothing else would. Thank you!
@@SoulStarLA Glad to help...
Thankyou!!!! Finally the flashing red light has stopped. Great, clear informative video 👍
Glad it worked...
Thank you for producing this video. Had tried everything else and then came upon this "downgrade-upgrade" procedure that saved the day! I hope you feel how appreciated you are for your explanation!!
Glad it still works!!
You saved me $60. It didn't work until I used the cable that came with the speaker, as you suggested. Thanks!
Glad it still works...
Thank you sooo much! I repeatedly tried all other options with no luck and then came across your video! Worked first time and now my speaker is charging! Never been so pleased to see an orange battery light!
Glad to help...
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!! I, like everyone else here was dreading having to say goodbye to my beloved soundlink - it comes everywhere with me, but the ADV up/down arrow and reinstall worked a treat. thanks a million!
Glad to help...
This 100% worked for me. I can’t thank you enough for sharing. I would never have known what to do. I was about to give up on it!!
Glad to help....
Thank you! This tutorial was very very useful for me! I thought my battery was dead and needed to replace it. Also, my software was showing as "up-to-date", so I could not install it and reset the device. But, the cheat code that you showed in this video, did the magic! My speaker is now back to life and working normally. Thank you!!!
You're welcome...
BRILLIANT!!! Had flashing red light, tried holding the buttons down, unplugging it, re-plugging it etc and got nowhere!! Plugged it in me laptop, told it was up to date with no other choices. Did the caps A, up & down arrows and got the drop menu and WALLOP fixed!!!! THANK YOU!! I feel that Bose have hidden this option as when this happened last time my partner had to pay 60-70 GBP to get it repaired by Bose ... I think that is totally unethical of them and has turned me off buying anything else from them in the future!! Once again mate NICE ONE!!!!! 👊🏻👊🏻
My pleasure...
This video comes to my rescue yet again, 2 years after the first! This time i had to use the shift A... arrows trick! Even Bose official videos don't mention this! I can't thank you enough for this video! Cheers
You thanked me just enough!!
This is amazing! Tried everything to fix this issue and Bose had me convinced I needed to pay them $60 to fix.
Hard to believe they don't actually know. Glad to help...
You sir are a LEGEND! This actually works haha.
I had tried all of the other fixes for this issue and nothing. I was about to throw it in the bin.
SIDE NOTE: When I pressed the button to get the downgrade option, the only option was 1.1.4 which was the version I was already supposedly on. I pressed apply changes and it did the install and boom, went from red blinking to yellow blinking and was able to start using it straight away again as it was charging with a yellow blinking light.
Glad to help...
Same here
Thank you. Terrific public service. Would be good if Bose actually did something like this themselves, but your stepping up to the mark really helped me.
You're welcome...
I never watched any TH-cam video that can really fix a technical problem, until this one! Thank you thank you thank you!
And you may yet find more! In the meantime, you're welcome welcome welcome...
Thank you from Korea. I thought the product was really broken. This is because the a/s center told me to just update and send if not. The ADV button saved the product. Thank you so much for helping me use more of my memories.
My pleasure...
Thank you so much for helping me bring my bose back from the dead! I thought it was a gonner! 🙌🏻
Glad to help...
Final fix, indeed! Thank you!! I followed your process to the end including the cryptic shift up down, etc... So happy to have my speaker back.
Glad to "hear" it!
This tutorial has been amazing! Thank you for showing us how to update the software, it’s working like a treat now! Thank you thank you 🙏
You're welcome...
I’d tried everything to fix my speaker and was about to throw it in the bin!
I watched this video and thought I’d already tried an update and it didn’t work.
I tried it again typing in the given sequence of letters and it allowed me to update it again, this time the red light stopped flashing and the speaker started to work!
Even if you have previously updated the mini link try it again, it worked for me!!
Glad to hear it...
I had tried about five other fixes with no change until I tried this. I was about to spend £70 on sending it Bose. You just gave my lovely little speaker a new lease of life and made my day...off to play some banging tunes! 😀
Continually amazed at how widespread this is! Happy to help...
The ADV Up down saved mine, it’s been in a drawer for a year! Thank you so much!
Glad to help...
Thank you very much !!
Your method of a then d then v then up arrow then down arrow took me a couple of tries ...then worked perfect when I just did lower case letters then up arrow then down arrow ...NO shift or tab key holds are necessary :)
Bose Soundlink Mini now rebooted, the blinking "RED" stopped, went to charging " amber "... and I actually had 80% battery when it quit (???) I really thought the battery had died completely.
Once again, thanks ever so much for the fix. Awesome !!
Glad to help. And surprised lower case worked...
This is exactly what happened to me, followed the process and installed the 'already current' software and bingo, it worked. Thanks very much!
You are welcome...
Thank you so much! I was at a total loss for how to fix this, Bose were wanting to charge £50 for me to send it in and try to fix it. So glad I found this video first - I was about to buy a new speaker to replace it!
Amazed the vid still helps after several years...
Thanks again and again. Occasionally I will let my Bose "go dead" -- leaving it on with no charger. I have come back to this fix at least 3-4 times over the years. Works like a charm every time. You are the best!
Your welcome over and over. But I have to ask, for me and everyone out there, does it update each time??
@@DashboardSymbols
Yes. Have to use the CAP “A D V up-arrow down-arrow” trick though.
You ACTUALLY saved my device - THANK YOU so much for posting this. Who would have thought A D V UP DOWN would save the day. Hint - mine worked when connected directly to USB not via cradle - the software was already at the upper version but the forced updated saved the device 🙂
Happy new year :-)
Interesting tip on the direct connection. Believe that's what I did as well. And glad to help...
I would like to express my thanks to you for taking the time to share this with us all. It has worked for me and i'm very happy to have the speaker working again. Thank you. Scot
You're very welcome...
Thank you so much, it was the ADV up down arrow that was the Bose life line here!!!
Glad it worked...
I was sceptical when typing A D V UP DOWN, but it worked and unbricked my speaker. Thanks !!
We've all got enough bricks. You're welcome...
WOW this actually worked for me. i was chatting with BOSE and they wanted me to send it in for repair $55 and i almost did. i'm lucky i found this video. my speaker has new life and now. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU...
Glad to help...
Gosh, your last trick saved my speaker!!! Now it's charging normally, Thank you so much!!!!
Perfect!! You're welcome.
This really helped. Thank you soooo much! I couldn’t fix it with any of the official and other non-official workarounds, but this one finally brought my speaker back to life 🖤
Glad it helped...
Thanks Man ! Your spot about updating _again_ with the same firmware fixed my Bose Soundlink Mini II - Doubt I'll be buying any more Bose gear after this!
Interesting reaction. I'm note sure I would simply cancel them outright, but hadn't actually considered it! And you're welcome...
Thank you so much. I thought my Bose speaker was tip material…tried every fix possible and then your great video. Legend. Thank you.
Glad to help...
THANK YOU! I thought I tried everything and was about to drop $150 on a new, less desirable speaker. I tried these instructions as a last ditch attempt and it's working!!!! No more flashing red light, and the speaker is charging again. You just saved my holiday weekend!
Glad to help...
Thank
you

You rescued my beloved Bose Speaker!!!
If we meet one day I‘ll owe you a beer my friend
You're welcome...
Thank you, boss! This was the most clear and easy to follow video. You saved me $100! God bless!
I'll split it with you! :-) You're welcome...
What a Legend, this fixed my problem and will for everyone. I was about to chuck it out Thanks a lot Mate
You're welcome...
This is the best, most in depth and succinct video on the topic. I was about 1 hour away from tossing this beautiful little box in the trash. Thank you.
Recognize... And thanks. Happy it still helps...
HI anyone lucky to have found this. I had spoken to BOSE , done the normal google fix hunts and was about to go to a BOSE store for a £75.00 fix. This walk through fixed it. I had tried the software update and apparently i did not need one. This guy has it right, do the keyboard bit and update- All fixed!! Brilliant!! I will now contact BOSE online again and tell them to view this fix !!!
Glad to help...
literally the only time a youtube video helped me
i love you ❤️
Thanks for the love but I'm probably not your type!!
Thank you so much for this! Speaker back up and running just in time for New Years party!
Party on!
I just wanted to say thanks, I genuinely thought my speaker had died.
You're welcome...
This needs a love button!! I keep coming back to this, as my (only just over 2-year-old Bose) does this every time I try to charge it. That darned red light comes on. I thought the battery needed replacing but Bose's NZ service centre just flatly refused to even look at it (it's out of warranty, buy a new one). This fixes it, and I get another round of use out of it. They are clearly programmed to 'fail' once the warranty is over. Bose's service was just appalling as I have tried desperately to save my machine and fix this, so they certainly aren't my favourite company now, but I do love this little machine - so I am eternally grateful to you for this video! Works every time!!! THANK YOU!!!!
Glad to help... (sorry, I just found a whole lot of comments that weren't immediately visible)
@@DashboardSymbols it is still going strong, I am just so very grateful to you every single time it recharges properly!!! :-D
The best self-fixed instruction out here!

Thank you so much, sir!
Really well-explained and understandable tutorial. Im glad you told us to use the original bose cable, didnt know they differ but the first cable i tried didnt work for this. Now my speaker is resurrected, thanks again!

Ha! Thank goodness for miles! :-) Happy to help...
I have the big brother to this speaker. Flashing red light and nothing when I hold the mute button when on charge. Opened up the battery and the batteries are dead. Bought it cheap to fix. Great video. Highly helpful and informative good sir.

I found one that someone threw away and decided to take it home. I tried everything I could find to fix this problem but the iFixit answer is what worked. Thanks for sharing!
Funny and sad at the same time. You're welcome...

This really works! Thank you so much!💖

Thanks!! Saludos desde Chile amigo :)
De nada amigo!
March 28 2023, the instructions for A, D, V, Up Arrow/Down Arrow still work even though the website appears different. Didn't need to select a firmware to use, just clicked the green Apply button and let it do its thing. Thank you so much!
True, Bose has made some changes, but not to help eh? You're welcome...
My Bose Mini Sound Link 2 stopped working about 6 months ago, first I did the update but a month later stopped working again. I thought I lost it since then and I thought it couldn't be fixed cause there wasn't any other update on their website. The "A D V Up arrow, Down arrow" was the trick I didn't know and it completely worked. Thank you so much for this information!
Glad it helped!
Wow, it worked! Even the bose help forum couldn't offer a real working solution. Thought I had to send it in for service and pay a hefty fee as its out of warranty. You saved us some hard cash during these trying times. Thank you so much sir!
My pleasure...
I was looking for instructions to replace the battery, but this video just saved me $40. Thank you
Glad to help...
I almost never comment on any videos or websites, but after trying every other solution this one worked and saved my speaker. So huge THANKS! and have a nice day!
You are welcome...
Thank you very much!!! Was about to return to Costco where I bought the speaker. But I really didn’t want to do that. Now I don’t have to. Thanks a lot. Saved me a trip and the hassle of explaining myself.
Glad to help...
Discovered this video while browsing new batteries and trying to find a video on how to solder it. Love you brother!
I guess it worked!! You're welcome...
Excellent video - we almost lost hope then the downgrading of software tip (ADV up down) saved the day. thanks so much for taking the time to produce this.
How? There is no downgrading opportunity on the website
Glad to do it...

Thank you so much! Like so many others I let my speaker gather dust for about 2/3 years as it started blinking red during Covid-19 and when Bose decided to close all their personal stores in the UK. I have tried multiple times to figure out a way to fix the issue over the years and finally decided after talking to a Bose representative to pay the £50 fee to send it off and be fixed, as a last ditch effort I have been going through TH-cam videos and luckily came across this video AND ITS WORKED! Again thank you so much, it’s saved me £50 and I have my music on extremely loud right now and loving life!
Hard to believe it still works! Glad to help...
I was about 30 seconds from throwing my expensive Bose speaker in the garbage. Decided to check a few more videos. So glad I found this one! The Bose website looks a little different now, but the procedure is essentially the same. I felt like a hacker using cheat codes to access secret menus. Speaker works perfectly again! Thank you.
Glad to help...
THANK YOU from Switzerland! I was almost giving up, even in the Bose store they said that I would need a new battery for 60$. You saved my Bose from the trash!
Glad to help...
i wish i came across this video almost a year ago when my first sound link had this problem. I got another one to replace it and today i had the same problem, decided to try one more time looking for a fix and you know what now i have two working speakers ..... Thank You !!!!!
Double the fun! You're welcome...
SAME HERE! The original Bose website doesn't mention the complete process ..this definitely worked and in minutes I had my speaker charging and working. Thanks a ton!
Glad to help...
Just found this after having the red blinking light for two days and numerous attempted remedies. All the button pushing, all the resetting, all the pull the charger while holding the button etc. Tried the Bose update but said it was updated.
Had started to take it apart to start gettining ready to replace the battery when I found this. Followed the instructions, reconnected to the Bose update website, hooked up the Bose Mini II, entered the ADV, Up arrow, down arrow and got the option to update to the 1.1.4. It progressed to about 56 percent then stopped. I started the process again and it finally updated to 100 percent. The blinking red light stopped. It's now charging normally again. Thank you for the excellent guidance.
Glad to help...
Brilliant fix, iv'e tried so many others to no avail then I came across your video and hey presto my speaker finally works, Genius thank you so so much...
The genius is someone else, but happy to help...
Thank you soooo much! I gave up trying to fix my Soundlink mini a couple of years ago, until I came across your video, and now it has come back to life!! :)
Glad to help...
This was a life saver, especially that it was out of warranty and following Bose's suggestion to update the firmware didn't seem it was going to work because it already said it was up-to-date. Thank you for the instructions on bypassing the update to force it to update again. Saved me $50 to send it in to Bose!!!
My pleasure...
