Rugged brilliance; Turkish Sodbusters/Hippekniep by J Tamer. 🇹🇷

  • Salutations, Ladies and Gentlemen! Today, I'll be discussing a few outstanding examples of classic workman's knives. These are based off of the 'Hippekniep', a traditional German Goat Herder's knife that has been around for hundreds of years. This design was later claimed by American knifemakers, (most notably, Case) and deemed "Sodbuster".
These particular models are handmade in Turkey by J. Tamer. I have purchased a few of their knives in the past year, and I must say, the quality has improved on a significant level, as these pieces have VASTLY surpassed my expectations. I hadn't seen J. Tamer's booth at the farmer's market in a while, but managed to stumble across it at a nearby sportsman's show. Boy, am I happy I did!
The quality on these is far superior to many big-name brands I've showcased. Considering the fact that J. Tamer isn't an old company, and yet they already have such a good grasp on quality, I think the brand has a very bright future!
These knives feature 4116 German stainless steel, as opposed to the 1.4034 steel that Otter uses, to which I was referencing.
Handles are beautiful Turkish Walnut, a wood commonly used for gun stocks!
Worked steel liners and steel spring with brass pins.
    Handmade in Turkey.

The brand has been around along time. Generational family steelsmiths/knife builders from Turkey. Joseph is the son who of all things, chose Sundre, Alberta as his home base. The family builds numerous steel items back in Turkey. Joseph also sells numerous other items not related to knives, but is still part of the family business. He has some amazing blades of various styles. I'm helping him with his English so that he doesn't have to rely on a translator app.

      Pinned!
Thank you for sharing this information! I appreciate the clarifications. 😊
I was unaware he had a workshop within his storefront. Does this mean the knives are actually crafted/assembled here in Canada? Or are other products made utilising the shop? I'd be happy to know!
      Thanks again.
      Cheers!

Watched the vid at last. I hadn't heard of them before but they look lovely. I really like the Walnut on yours and your Dad's bigger knife. They look quite chunky and solid. Shame we can't get hold of them over here.
I wonder if the idea with the Torx screw is to allow the owner to slacken it off a bit if they thought the pull was too strong? Although if I slackened it off I'd want to Loctite it back in to stop it working itself out of its own accord.
I've been spying, are we getting a Soddy vid soon?😮😊

    • @TheKnifeRaven
      @TheKnifeRaven  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The Walnut is beautiful on these, and it has a lovely smell to it. The handles are indeed quite chunky, which I figure would lend them well to heavy use.
Your Torx screw theory is probably true, as I can't see any other reason to add a screw on a clearly pinned-construction knife. It's not like you'd be taking it apart!
Also, if you're referring to my comment on SCK's video, the Sodbuster(s) I mentioned were these ones!

Most impressive I must say, my gripe with a lot of modern slip joints is the fact that the handles are to slim, these are right up my street, by the way have you seen the new Michael May knife its called the Clayton Barlow Oak covers and brass bolsters, but my goodness an eye watering price, look forward to your next ramble. 😁

As for the Korppi, that may have to wait, just simply due to the steep price. After all, I'm waiting on some things from Heinnie Haynes, so I won't be making any big purchases for a while.

It's a generational family business of metalsmith/knife builders. Joseph also does work on the knives as well. He has a shop in the back of his retail space where he does finishing work
