Remember HMIs? Changing out a hot stipple lens? The sound of the wooden lens box lid shutting? Scrims? Moving them without powering down? 4K needing a 60 amp bates?Globing up the 18K and the smell of the alcohol wipe? Good times. I do love me some LED though.
I miss none of that. hahahaha. The moment I had to do any of this again when I did comparison tests with an m18 and m40, I realized that I am just fine not going back to HMI if i can avoid it.
Luke, thanks for the post Since you had used the Prolychts, how much does it feel like their system ? Do you still have any, if so, how well do they play with this by your eye in color? Hand grenade view
Thinking of upgrading the 600d pros to these because I feel a 600d ii is coming out and these 1200x are more powerful sacrificing a little less weight and slightly smaller size of the 600d pros
@creativegreatsvisuals Right. Do you have a light meter or the Cinemeter II App? In a darkened space (garage?) hold your meter about 10 feet away and shine your 1200D at your meter directly or indirectly via a white card or white wall and take a reading of the direct light or the bounced light. The bounced light maybe slightly different. Make a note of it. Take the reading of your 1200D and dial that into the 80c and try it in both CIE and Black Body mode. See which is closer. If you have x/y in your meter you can measure your 1200D and then go to those coordinates with your 80c. This will get you close. The 1200D may well be different and different intensities, so check in once in a while if you are worried or notice a difference to eye.
The CCT shift when dimming, was this better or worse than the 1200D? Is it possible your meter was getting pollution from other sources? Disappointed in the shift on your demo, but I’m interested in how it compares to older units or other brands
You know me, I’m not the guy to be doling out data points. Wait for Andrew’s review for a clearer, more detailed analysis. I’m more of a hand grenade guy rather than a sharpshooter. Pollution is pretty much a gimme. Regardless, I became much happier once tunable white units arrived and this one is sporting the latest tech for your lighting pleasure. I know it’s fun to overthink it…
the xy mode is super cool, could see how using that for tunable white would be much finer that white , then "cct" and it's funny I want to refer to it as a "bicolor" but that's just totally not the case anymore
Hi Luke. How much noise does the 1200x make compared to the 1200d? Would you be able to use it near a subject in interview setups? The 1200x has a mixing element at the front that the 1200d doesn't have. How does the beam angle and shadow quality compare to the 1200d?
Looking back at your test.... it seems light brightness had a greater effect on perceived whiteness of your T-shirt than anything else. The Nanlux 1200b at 5600k seem to match the 1200x(constant mode) and Daylight pretty well, despite having no Indigo emitter. The comparison at 3200k wasn't overly useful since the camera wasn't balanced for 3200k. If someone run's similar tests again, I'd like to see the camera's aperture changed to match brightness of the lights and a tungsten light comparison. To see if the indigo emitter makes much difference to skin tones and perceived whiteness at 3200k.
Hey Luke! I'd be interested in comparing the Godox 1200bi at a 45 degree reflector rather then the 60 degree. Feels like a mis interpreted output comparison!
Agreed! I messed up. I realized that while editing, but it was too late to fix before the deadline, so that’s why I added the text note. That said, that’s output related… there still is no internal G/M correction. The 1200R might be an interesting comparison too😉
One error amidst all the info and testing is nothing Luke! Love hearing your thoughts and putting your opinions out there for all of the community. Glad to be on the Freethink/Bigthink team 👊🏻 @@meetthegaffer
Turns out I further screwed up by having the 1200B in constant mode too! Needless to say, The other 1200’s are a little closer to the 1200x that it first appeared🤪
Pretty massive shift in color when dimming...Hopefully they can fix that in future firmware. The amount of times I have used a larger LED at 1-10% is off the charts. It would be nice to trust that what the controller says is what the light is doing.
Because I’m a little thick🤨 The Godox is brighter than the Nanlux, but not sure about the 1200x. But in the end, there are a number of other factors to consider beyond brightness.
Is it possible that the mirror board is actually changing the color temp? I know that's very common with these mirror boards. The light bridge and others claim they keep the color temp without a shift. But that's something I haven't tested. Maybe someone else has? Thanks for the solid test as always!
Good point! I did not measure from the board, only direct sun and then after the light came through the diffusion, so that was another failed opportunity🙄
Very useful; thank you. Especially love Aputure saying they'll have a whole line - 2 lines - of both tunable white, and "C" color, lights, at smaller power levels also; I can't wait🥰🥳. If they can improve durability/QC, & repair turnaround times, they'll gain even more market share. (Dumb question, did the bracelet come from Aputure? Forgive my prying if it didn't).
Two things: their 1200Bi has a good deal of output. For some reason I demo’d it with their 65 degree intensifier instead of their 45 degree🤷🏼♂️. Also, I believe they have come out with a 1200R, which is a full color point source unit.
Understood, and thank you. I guess I was opining if there was a firmware update possibility that could potentially increase output if for a short term. Either way, I see why you wore a "muscle T shirt" b/c it is heavy! 😅 I had to buy my first crank stand to help me with raising it solo. Thanks for the gun show and knowledge! ❤

I know this irks some folks, but I am so with you there. Been there, done that; thanks for the memories, but moving on😀
@@Aputure-Tim_S_Kang I like avoiding the inconveniences as well but LED still can't go above a 4k (and it's debatable about a 2.5K) so there's that.
@@666size666 very true. and that class of unit is the only HMI type worth using at this point.
I wish they had a similar mount lock on the xt 26. The mounting system was long overdue for an upgrade.

The new 80c’s have white point feature , can I still get these 80c’s to match 2 aputure 600d lights ?
More easily than with the original 60x’s😉
@ how do I get the new 80c’s to match the aputure 600d’s ? Cause I’m not using the new 1200x storm or 1000c storm with new white point features ?

Does the dedolight parallel beam intensifier for the Prolycht Orion also fits on the new Bowensmount from the 1200x. This would be awesome.
I don’t know.
Nice real world comparisons

why did you use the 60 degree reflector on the godox? it comes with the 45. all I can do is wonder which one is brighter.

No idea.

wouldn't it be interesting to compare with HMI color spectrum?:)
Sure, but I no longer have HMI’s🙃

Not sure if they are around anymore. The guy I knew there, Jonathan Miller, is now with Sumolight.
Return on Investments? Forget about it!
I heard a rumor that a venture capital company mismanaged Hive Lighting out of business. Someday I hope I get the chance to hear the real story.
