This scapegoat view was presented originally by O.R.L Crosier’s interpretation of Leviticus 16 and was accepted and validated by a vision of EGW. From 1849-1890 she was consistent and held this interpretation, but in 1897 she says this,
“Some apply the solemn type, the scapegoat, to Satan. THIS IS NOT CORRECT. HE CANNOT BEAR HIS OWN SINS. At the choosing of Barabbas, Pilate washed his hands. HE CANNOT BE REPRESENTED AS THE SCAPEGOAT. The awful cry, uttered with a hasty, awful recklessness, by the Satan-inspired multitude, swelling louder and louder, reaches up to the throne of God, “His blood be upon us and upon our children.” [Matthew 27:25.] CHRIST WAS THE SCAPEGOAT, WHICH THE TYPE REPRESENT. HE ALONE can be represented by the GOAT BORNE INTO WILDERNESS. HE ALONE, OVER WHOM DEATH HAD NO POWER, WAS ABLE TO BEAR OUR SINS. (Manuscript 112, 1897)
Why the drastic change of position?

    • @a1phamatter595
      @a1phamatter595 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@melissas.5814 so then how do we reconcile this? Also the fact the O.R.L crozier who originated this interpretation and EGW simply validating it through a vision later redacted on his position which by the way this is what crozier said regarding his exposition of the sanctuary,
You ask, "Did you hold to the shut-door theory, that salvation was past, and that there was no more pardon for sinners?" I did.
"And did . . . the author of the visions, and those who believed them, adopt these views?" They did; and were among the first to declare them and the most persistent in retaining and publishing them; and what is more, THEY MUST STILL HOLD THOSE VIEWS, BECAUSE THEY STILL ADHERE TO MY SANCTUARY EXPOSITION, WHICH WAS WRITTEN TO PROVE THE SHUT DOOR. They even make (or did make a few years ago,) a foolish excuse for the conversions that have occurred since the fall of 1844, viz., that the names of those millions of converts were borne into the holy of holies on the breastplate of the high priest on the 10th day of the 7th month in that year-most of them yet unborn! There was no hint of any such thing in the type.”
So this exposition was made to PROVE the Shut Door which we know the pioneers believed and was validated again in a vision by EGW but then changed her position again on another vision.
So now you have Miller recanting on his position of 1844 and Crozier on his exposition of the sanctuary doctrine that is used today to justify the false prediction of Christ Coming in 1844 that Crozier originally wrote to Justify the Shut Door Doctrine. Then later on became an Open door because of a “vision”.

@@a1phamatter595it is a change of position on paper. However, she continued to hold the belief after that satan was the scapegoat sent into the wilderness when she wrote “the great controversy” in 1911. This is from a copy of a manuscript that was prepared by a secretary. It was shortened compared to the original writings of egw and probably just a simple mistake since before and after egw continued to hold to this belief.

       @powerofthelamb NO! It's about Jesus!
IT SAYS the SCAPE GOAT MAKES ATONEMENT. Lev 16:10
Matthew 8:17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: “He Himself took our infirmities and CARRIED AWAY our diseases Isaiah 53:4 yet he himself bore our sicknesses and carried away our pains. Sacrifices, offerings, and priestly rituals to attain atonement (IT SAYS the SCAPE GOAT MAKES ATONEMENT)., offer thanksgiving, make amends, be purified. The first was to cleanse the Israelites of their sin. Second, it shows that the only way to have your sin forgiven was by the shedding of innocent blood. Third was to point to the Son of God who obtained forgiveness of our sins once and for all by shedding His own blood. This is beautiful: SIN singular, ONE, NOT plural, The 2 goats represented A SIN Offering not sins offering. READ it: Leviticus 16:5 And he shall take from the congregation of Israel two male goats for A SIN Offering. The 2 goats equaled one sin offering both presented before the LORD, illustrating the fullness of Jesus' taking our sins and carrying them away. Praise HIS Name!!!
The priest confessed the sins upon the Goat of Atonement, since when do we confess our sins to Satan? READ it: Leviticus 16:10But the goat chosen by lot as the scapegoat shall be presented ALIVE BEFORE the LORD to MAKE ATONMENT. It's an easy read. IT SAYS the SCAPE GOAT MAKES ATONEMENT. No modern day Bible apologist agrees with Adventism's proof texting 1800s theology. IT SAYS the SCAPE GOAT MAKES ATONEMENT. The Bible interprets itself. Your Adventist pride is your faith. The Law is NOT of faith Gal 3:12, that which is not of faith is sin Rom 14:12, without faith you cannot please God. I plead with you cast off this "Ellen spell" that's on you. Adventism only, makes the Temple about satan. It's about Jesus!

Notice that Leviticus 16:10 says the scape goat was presented alive, unlike the Lord's goat, it was not killed, or sacrificed.
Also it was let go into the wilderness, alive.

Azazel, in Jewish legends, a demon or evil spirit to whom, in the ancient rite of Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), a scapegoat was sent bearing the sins of the Jewish people. Two male goats were chosen for the ritual, one designated by lots “for the Lord,” the other “for Azazel” (Leviticus 16:8). The ritual was carried out by the high priest in the Second Temple and is described in the Mishna. After the high priest symbolically transferred all the sins of the Jewish people to the scapegoat, the goat destined “for Azazel” was driven into the wilderness and cast over a precipice to its death. Azazel was the personification of uncleanness and in later rabbinic writings was sometimes described as a fallen angel.
      No blood remission of sins

I hope this message gets to Pastor Myers. I just want to add a spoiler alert to those who advocate Jesus work and atonement was finished at the cross. Adventist are severely criticized because we believe as the bible indicates that the ministry of Jesus continues in the heavenly courts above. I don't know if people think through their claims on this subject. It reveals a willful or blind ignorance to the sequence of events surrounding Jesus' atonement for sinners starting at the cross and culminating with the final eradication of sin depicted by the two goats. If people and preachers are claiming that the Scapegoat is Jesus, this belief completely contradicts their unfounded insistence that Jesus atonement was complete at the cross!
Misrepresentations of the truth will always be uncovered and exposed. Pastor Myers, if you see any virtue in using this simple but reasonable counterpoint then please enlarge upon it.

Mike, let me ask you to consider this a different way. Salvation is necessary because of Satan. Jesus covers our sins, but he is not going to take the responsibility, blame, or guilt of them. When you use scapegoat today, how do you use it? Its the person who’s going to take the blame right? Thats what’s happening here, our sins are removed from Gods presence by heaping them on Satan. For us, our records are expunged. But Satan will carry them to his destruction. Its a transference from us, thru Jesus, to Satan. Cleansing the Sanctuary means removing the sins from it, the scapegoat was the mechanism to do so. Please know that none of us, to my knowledge, thinks Satan has anything to do with our Justification- other than being the reason we need it.

The way I read and understand it is that both goats are without blemish, so it didn't matter which goat was chosen. The Lords goat was sacrificed and therefore couldn't be sent to the desert, so there was a need for another goat to take the sins away to the desert where azazel was. Maybe the sins were sent back to the devil but he obviously didn't represent the goat because how could he take the sins back to himself? Plus he is not without blemish. So I read it that Jesus represents both goats because He died on our behalf and took the sins away. Obviously God wouldn't want the sins sent to Him so maybe they were sent back to the devil.

I’m SDA and believe Satan is Azazel, but I’m uncomfortable with some of the things presented. I wish it was correctly presented. Ritually, the goat was going “to” Azazel. While the goat could serve as a representative, the text is not saying Azazel is the name of the goat. That’s what our leading scholars say, e.g. Gane, Rodriguez, Shea. Second, when it comes to the lots, he is very narrow in his usage of lots. He picks and chooses verses and pulls in verses that have nothing to do with the Day of Atonement. Yes, the good and evil people have an allotted inheritance. But nowhere does it say that Azazel is the allotted inheritance of the wicked. Those verses are clearly pointing to heaven/hell, not which goat you belong to. Same with Mat. 24’s sheep/goat metaphor. There are no sheep in the ritual. All Jesus was doing was comparing the selection of the people to a shepherd, not at all to the day of atonement. Also, Pastor says that the goat does not atone for the people. The Lord’s goat only atones for the sanctuary, not the people. The people are never mentioned until the Azazel ritual. Read Lev. 16:33. The pattern shown mirrors the progression of the order of events: atonement for the sanctuary, tent of meeting, altar, and finally the people. That’s the exact order. Verses 16 and 18 sequentially walk through the first three, and the only one left is the people. The next thing that happens is related to the people. Also, when verse 10 says that atonement is upon the goat, that’s a misleading translation, which Adventist scholars have recognized. Adventist scholars have recognized that the goat is ritually clean and doesn’t need atonement. It’s atoning for the people. A ritual atonement is accomplished by a transfer of sin. In the rite the goat takes on the sins of the people, and in doing so atones for the people. What really needs to be addressed is whether the goat is the same as Azazel or not. The fact that the goat goes “to Azazel” indicated that the goat is not Azazel, and with that in mind, evangelicals often believe that the goat is Christ and Azazel is Satan. I’ve seen some connect it with Christ’s death and his “descent into hell” to the demons as one of the creeds says. Bear in mind we are preaching a sermon that doesn’t make sense if they don’t understand that the cleansing of the sanctuary is right before the second coming. Feel free to contact me if you’re wondering more; I’ve been studying this topic even before the Eric Mason debate began

I would like clarification on the investigative judgement and the cleansing of the sanctuary (day of atonement). I can’t find a scriptural reference even using the words “investigative judgement”. The cleansing of the sanctuary happens during the return of Christ and the process of the scapegoat wandering the uninhabited earth (wilderness) surely? I realise the significance of 1844 where the “tainted Protestant movement or Gods house ” was cleansed by the discovery of the truth, but really the heavenly sanctuary is not cleansed until Christ returns and the sins are placed on the head of the scape goat? My pastor is evasive on this. I can’t communicate well with him it seems. My search continues. I believe there could well have been a moment of excitement after the great disappointment where some “pretty rapid discoveries” were made and settled in haste so as to answer the questions. From then on it was heresy to quietly question anything about the “settled doctrine”

"unfounded insistence that Jesus atonement was complete at the cross!" is what one SDA said to me. I asked him for the reference in the 28 Fundamental Beliefs.
God Jesus Christ said, "it is finished" not unfounded. Dare you argue with GOD? Here are some more verses that of course you will ignore:
Romans 8:31What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is FOR us, who can be against us?(rhetorical question) 32He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, freely give us ALL things? 33Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? (rhetorical question) It is God WHO JUSTIFIES. 34Who is there to condemn us?(rhetorical question) For Christ Jesus, who died, and more than that was raised to life, is AT THE RIGHT HAND (King is finished) of God-and He is INTERCEDING (HIGH PRIEST) FOR us.
Can you feel it? Feel the Glory!
Jesus was taken up into heaven and he sat at the RIGHT HAND of God. Mark 16:19 No IJ.
The CROSS was the DAY of ATONEMENT.
Matthew27:50And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
John 19:30 Jesus said, “It is finished.” ... and gave up his spirit. Matthew 27:51And behold, the VEIL OF THE TEMPLE WAS TORN IN TWO from top to bottom; Me: I have NOW full access to the Most Holy Place in Christ. The temple is over, ended, TORN VEIL showed the Glory was gone and then destroyed in 70AD. I'm the temple now and HIS Spirit dwells in me. 1 Corinthians 3:16 Wow! Holy! Holy! Holy!
Can you feel the Glory? Can you get this?
Hebrews 10:12 says, "But when Christ had offered for ALL time a SINGLE sacrifice for sins, he SAT DOWN (THE KING has FINISHED HIS Work) at the RIGHT HAND of God" Hebrews 9:28 so Christ was offered ONCE to BEAR the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, APART(IT IS FINISHED) from sin, for salvation.
    I just love scripture.
Steven: Acts 6:9 They began to argue with Stephen, 10but they could not stand up to his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke. 56“Look,” Steven said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the RIGHT HAND of God.” No entering in, in 1844 but already in, at accension. Nothing happened in 1844,
Jesus was already in the Holy of Holies God's presence. Whew! Wow! Feel the Glory!
Some sincere Adventists, that have faith in Jesus, this will click inside. Hope this helps.

In that moment, Jesus was plunged into outer darkness away from the Father's presence to bear the sins of the world The FATHER turned away and left the SON alone as Azazel was left alone bearing our sin. Regardless of how this questionable passage became part of Manuscript 112, 1897, the statement should be viewed as exceptional. It does not provide a reason for anyone to fall into the dangerous fallacy of “generalization,” 22 by which one or a few exceptions are generalized as the overall rule. This is deceptive. No she didn’t. Ellen White estates clearly states that there is no reason to believe Ellen White wrote this. Why stoop to this kind of tactic? You don’t believe anything Ellen White “said” anyway. And if you do believe what Ellen White said, look at all her statements which clear say that Satan is the scapegoat. Stop with the desperation attempts, the hail Mary’s.
Funny that you left in the “See the comment above” part inserted by the White Estates. Why didn’t you include this part?
Manuscript 112, 1897, titled “Before Pilate and Herod,” is a 19-page typed document with typical editorial corrections by Ellen White’s secretaries (most of which were made by Maggie Hare), and stamped with “E. G. White” after the end of the content of page 19. This was the usual procedure in her office when making multiple carbon copies of an Ellen White manuscript. There are only three original typewritten copies of this manuscript. One of them contains all 19 pages, and the other two, including the file copy, end on page 17, with the last paragraph of page 17 cut off, and pages 18 and 19 omitted.
The overall content of the deleted pages is not unusual except for the first paragraph of page 18, dealing specifically with the “scapegoat.” That paragraph reads as follows,
Some apply the solemn type, the scape goat, to Satan. This is not correct. He cannot bear his own sins. At the choosing of Barabbas, Pilate washed his hands. He cannot be represented as the scape goat. The awful cry, uttered with a hasty awful recklessness, by the Satan inspired multitude, swelling louder and louder, reaches up to the throne of God, His blood be upon us and upon our children. Christ was the scape goat, which the type represents. He alone can be represented by the goat borne into the wilderness. He alone, over whom death had no power, was able to bear our sins. 18
This 1897 statement departs completely from everything else Ellen White wrote on the subject either before (as confirmed by the quotations above); or later (as presented in the 1911 edition of The Great Controversy). In the 1911 edition, prepared under her own supervision, 19 she still spoke of the post-1844 era as the “antitypical day of atonement” 20 that will culminate with the final destruction of Satan, at the end of the 1,000 years of Revelation 20, as the antitypical “scapegoat.” 21 So there is no convincing reason to believe that she ever changed her mind on the subject.”
      Why use deception?

@@cliffbailey6474 Food for thought. The sacrifices that occur on the passover, the unleavened bread, firstfruits, Pentecost all point to Jesus death, yet Jesus did not die on Pentecost, nor did he die on the day of the feast of firstfruits, nor on the day of the feast of unleavened bread. With the exception of the Passover, none of the other feasts were fulfilled on the day Jesus died. You are not understanding the chronology of the feast days and how they unfold over a period of time, the last being the tabernacles which will be fulfilled at the very end of time. I'd encourage you to go back and study deeper. The Day of atonement points to events beyond and after passover, as in the death and resurrection of Christ.

Compare Revelation 20 and Leviticus 16. Was Azazel as pure as the Lord's goat? Could either goat been the Lord's goat? Was Azazel sent or banished or whatever term you want to use for 1000 years? Is wilderness, desert the same as a bottomless pit? Was the Lord's goat hung on a tree? Was the Lord's goat killed outside the city gate? Was Jesus killed in the temple? Was the Lord's Jesus' Blood applied to the horns? Not one to one but types and shadows pointing the END RESULT to someone. Azazel represented "For I will forgive their iniquity(blood), and I will remember their sin no more(wilderness).” Hebrews 8:12, Jeremiah 31:34. Isaiah 43:25 ESV
“I, I am he (not satan) who blots out your transgressions for my own sake, and I will not remember your sins. Hebrews 10:17 ESV Then he adds, “I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” 1 John 1:9 ESV If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Psalm 103:12 ESV As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us. Jesus did both for us. Seems I have more Bible verses and it's more Glorifying of Christ than yours. Praise be to Yahweh Jesus Christ.
Your knowledge doesn't change you. Jesus commanded; you must be Born Again John 3:3&7. Unless you are a New Creation 2 Corinthians 5:17 by the Born Again indwelling of the Holy Spirit which testifies. Otherwise, your faith is in vain. You'll know when you are Born Again, otherwise you're not. You must. Hope this helps.

Nobody says Azazel is Jesus. That’s a total red herring. The text says goat is SENT TO Azazel. It does not say the goat IS Azazel. There is a HUGE difference. All caps for emphasis, not shouting. Furthermore, there are several theories on what the word Azazel means. Ivor only gave one possibility. Here is chat GPT on the various interpretations:
The term “Azazel” in Leviticus 16 has been the subject of various interpretations and theories throughout history. Here are some of the main theories regarding its meaning:
    1. Azazel as a Wilderness Demon or Spirit:
    • One common interpretation is that Azazel refers to a demon or a spirit of the wilderness. This theory is supported by the context in which one goat is sent away into the wilderness “to Azazel.” This view sees Azazel as a personified evil entity to whom the sins of the people are transferred via the scapegoat.
    2. Azazel as a Desolate Place:
    • Another theory posits that Azazel refers to a remote, desolate place. According to this view, the term simply denotes the physical location where the scapegoat, bearing the sins of the people, is sent. It highlights the idea of removing sin far away from the community.
    3. Azazel as a Combination of “Az” (goat) and “Azel” (dismissal):
    • Some scholars believe that Azazel is a compound word derived from “az” (meaning goat) and “azel” (meaning removal or dismissal). This interpretation emphasizes the role of the goat in the ritual of atonement.
    4. Azazel as a Symbol of Rejection or Separation:
    • There is also a symbolic interpretation where Azazel represents the concept of rejection or separation from the community. In this sense, the goat is not sent to an actual entity or place but symbolizes the removal and isolation of sin.
    5. Azazel in Later Jewish Tradition:
    • In later Jewish tradition, Azazel became associated with fallen angels and demonic figures. For instance, the Book of Enoch describes Azazel as a leader of the fallen angels who taught humanity forbidden knowledge and brought sin into the world.
    6. Azazel in Rabbinic Literature:
    • Rabbinic literature offers various explanations, with some rabbis interpreting Azazel as a strong and hard mountain or a rocky region, while others suggest it refers to a specific rocky precipice.
Each of these theories offers a different perspective on the term “Azazel,” reflecting the diverse ways this enigmatic term has been understood across different traditions and scholarly interpretations.
So, as you can see….Ivor didn’t present balanced evidence. Get out of the echo chamber. Making Satan the scapegoat is EXTREMELY problematic. Here is why.
The scapegoat was a part of the "sin offering" (Lev. 16:5), "made atonement" (vs. 10) bore the sins, transgressions and iniquities of the people (vs. 20-22), and cleansed the people of their sins (vs. 30), yet Satan is your scapegoat?
    Think about it.

So nobody says the scapegoat is Jesus yet on the videos by the defense and the comments in the chat people who oppose this position say Jesus is scapegoat. First error. Second, why use an argument similar to this to say SDA’s believe Satan is “their” sin bearer and savior which literally no Adventist says or believes? 3rd, all of these points are addressed in the video. Give me a quote from a Bible commentary, a Christian theologian, or somebody like EJ or Myles making a claim like this and I will concede. The Christian claim is that THE GOAT FOR AZAZEL represents Christ, not that Azazel represents Christ. Those are two very different claims. @@Perseverance4477We know exactly who he's talking about. And he's absolutely correct. Know not only what you believe. But also why you believe it. And most importantly, know where it can be found in the scriptures. I just had to use the tool of Correction (The Bible) to correct a non SDA pastor that Jesus did not die on Thursday. And after explaining from the scriptures he admitted his confusion on the subject and that he was simply repeating what he heard another minister say. Nevertheless he accepted truth and the correction. That doesn't make him any less a Christian than myself because I was right and he was wrong. It's not about who's right or wrong. It's about growing in the fullness of wisdom of the Word. We all desire the same thing yet we're fighting against one another instead of encouraging one another and edifying each other. Lord will Your prayer ever be answered that we may be one like You and the Father? I yearn for that experience but it ain't going to happen if we constantly are in-fighting. Beloved SDA Christians are not your enemies. We are friends that love Jesus above all else and want to please Him because of all He's done for us. And we want others to have that experience as well. Is that a crime?

Actually both goats are a represented as a single sin offering (Leviticus 16:5). If the other goat is “Satan” how can this be when Satan is not perfect. All sin offerings are to be unblemished which means Both Goats need to be unblemished because it represents one single offering.
Also what do we do with this statement from EGW in 1897,
This scapegoat view was presented originally by O.R.L Crosier’s interpretation of Leviticus 16 and was accepted and validated by a vision of EGW.

They don't have an answer for this, so as usual, they'll say that the Jesuits put it in her writings. Thanks for posting it up. I was reading all these comments and shaking my head. Ellen White had to have discovered something about this whole thing for her to make such a radical change in her view. Some will also say that, most of what she wrote supports the view that Satan was the Scapegoat. This was not written by EGW. It's amazing how people that don't even read her writings, or believe them for that matter, can regurgitate some foolishness as if it's fact. For this 1 false quote there are an abundance of actual statements from EGW agreeing that Satan is in fact the scapegoat cast away from the camp on the Day of Atonement. Why fight so hard against a people (SDA's) that always give THIS SAITH THE LORD for everything they believe? All we do is stand on the word of God and yet we constantly are scrutinized. Jesus was right when He warned His true followers that the world would hate us just as they hated Him. And while we are always trying to reason from the scriptures, all others can do is attack EGW.
