It's essentially the deconstruction of grinding in RPG's to reach max level. Undertale basically goes "how determined are you to actually do this?" and gives consequences to your actions, since it treats even "mooks" as individual beings with lives, and not just enemies for the player to gain EXP from.
Yeah that’s true. I also thought the combat system was one of the best you could possibly get from an rpg type game. Not to say it’s amazing. The attacking obviously is lackluster but unless your doing the genocide route, which as stated, is supposed to be annoying, you won’t have to attack that much if at all.

I really just don't understand how people say the fan base of a game ruined said game for them. I mean they can't change the game itself! Just ignore them and enjoy it or dislike it how ever you please

One argument for the case is that if someone enjoys a game they likely would love to discuss the game and all the aspects they found cool about it, which you can’t exactly do if you hate the fan base.

I still love Undertale, even though it has its flaws. It just has a certain charm to it, y'know? And I also think that both the toxic fans and the anti-fans are cringe.
After watching anime for many years, it was easy to learn that _no_ fandom will ever be incorruptible. No earthly group of people of any significant size will consist 100% of good, decent people, and Undertale was so good its fanbase grew to consist of millions of fans around the world.
With that many people, it really should not surprise you to find that some will be freaks who draw porn, some that get angry over trivial crap, some that are trolls. I just ignore it all. No point in fussing over it.
Even when some fans are mentally ill homicidal maniacs ( *coughcoughtrannyphantomcoughcough* ), at the end of the day, it has no bearing on the work itself. The problem was within those individual audience members, not the entire fanbase, and not the work. Bad/immature people exist who have passions too. That's life. Undertale is a good game, and an excellent story. Its fanbase shows a lot of talented fan comic writers, music composers, and animators. If you don't like the evil part of a fanbase, just ignore it, and look for the good part of it. UT's fanbase- which is not unique in this regard- has both. Don't jump to hasty generalizations; look for the good. It really is that simple.
It's the treachery of percentages. A 0.001% degeneracy rate will be nonexistent in a group of a thousand, but in a million that translates to a thousand degenerates. And they are ALWAYS vocal minorities

Although, personally - and I don’t mean to be that guy - the JJBA fandom for some reason always seemed like an exception to the rule.
Maybe it's because I have an easier time ignoring people but I never had a problem with the Undertale fanbase. I didn't play the game until January of 2016 because it was a Christmas gift and had never heard of it outside of seeing a few pictures of Sans and Papyrus.
Now I see all these people calling the game bad and by extension the people who like it horrible people which to me seems ridiculously immature. It's like when I see people complain about modern day pop stars, just let people like what they like. In the end it won't effect you in any major way.

The thing about Undertale is that the game isn't designed to be replayed, at least after you get the pacifist ending. It's a one-trick pony; it's designed to subvert your expectations the first time through, which is why people love it so much: it's more unique than a lot of other games out there. But when you really start to over-analyze it by replaying it again, that surprise factor is gone, and you realize that the core gameplay structure is mediocre without the elements of surprise that the game throws at you.
But honestly, I think that's fine. The first playthrough of a game is generally always the most fun, and Undertale simply invests much more into making that first playthrough incredible, at the cost of the game's overall enjoyment in subsequent playthroughs.
I just think it's a mistake to try to analyze this game in the context of how good it is overall, because in all honesty, Undertale is probably a game that won't stand the test of time. It's a game that's designed to capitalize on our current culture, and when our culture inevitably changes, Undertale's surprise factor will fall out of relevance and what you'll be left with is a game that feels outdated, whose gameplay isn't strong enough to make up for it being outdated.
I really do like Undertale-heck, I'm helping make debatably the most popular Undertale fangame out there-, but even I have to admit that time isn't going to be kind to it at all.
I do agree with this but there is replay value but only in the neutral runs where you kill certain people or don't and even in the true pacifist you can be a jerk to everyone and still get that ending

I’m that one weird guy who’s played the Pacifist Route six times and loved it each time. I can definitely agree that the first time is the first time though. I think that the different Routes add some sense of replayability, but even that well dries up quickly.

When I first SAW Undertale, I said something stupidly ironic.My brother was in Hotlands and was trying to spare the enemy. I had no idea what he was playing, but I saw he wasn't using fight, and said: "Why don't you just kill him already?" "Cuz that's not how this game works."
Confused, I played through the game, and actually spared most things.Except Undyne. I killed her because I was so lost on what to do.

Tbh I still really like Undertale. I’ll never forget the first time I experienced the story. I really fell in love with the characters and the world they’d built, which is maybe why the genocide run was so gut wrenching. In a good way of course.
Now while I’m not some sort of Undertale fanboy, I can still appreciate the game for what it is and what it meant to me and so many others. Therefore I will probably always have a special place in my heart for this game.
Also the soundtrack is amazing, so that might also be a big factor.

The Mettaton EX fight wasn't THAT hard to figure out.
In my first run, Mettaton gave me the most trouble of all bosses. It's nothing compared to genocide, of course, but still it's a fight with a TON of weird, unrelated mechanics that the game doesn't prepare you for.

If you want more Gaster, read the comic Dogs of Future Past by LynxGriffin. It meshes with the preexisting canon so well that it might as well be canon itself, and frankly any other approach to Gaster just seems odd to me.

That's like saying a movie being bad is fine because "it's supposed to be bad." Games should NEVER bore us, that's what they try their hardest NOT to do. There's no excuse as to why the genocide route wastes your time to such a degree.
The thing is that a movie is a passive medium while a videogame is an active one. You can watch a movie and it'll always be the same, but the experience you have with a game will always be different depending on how you play it. The Genocide route is only one of the many ways to play the game, and it punishes you for making the choice of killing every monster in the game. Which's something that takes both a lot of effort and dedication on the player's part. And I get the "but muh player choice" argument, but Undertale is a game that subverts the expectations of other RPGs. Hence why it's a niche game not meant for everyone.

this is one of the best Undertale videos I've seen in a long time. It explains the state of things and why it is how it is well, though there's still a problem with the fact that... things are going to keep being this way for tons more great things and there's not much anyone can do about it. The best course of action IMO is just to enjoy things you enjoy and do your best to not be affected by outlying communities or "cringiness" or whatever, no matter *how* bad it gets; it's not the original piece of media's fault, you should judge it only on its own merits.
And Undertale fucking owns. No one can take that away from meeeeee t. someone who played it when it had just come out and was able to fall in love with it before the Corruption spread

The reason why I hate this game is the internet. I enjoy a full blind play-through, not a week has passed from the day which this game was released and there were spoilers EVERYWHERE. And I don't mean Sans fight spoilers, but endings alternate endings and so on. And they were impossible to avoid, unlike any other game, this one the internet ruined for me.

What people don't understand is that Undertale is just a random indie game that is not even that good ( imo) and should be treated like what it is instead of praising it mindlessly.

You know what would be awesome in Undertale's battle mechanic? If the monsters before the bosses, used those gimmicks, like some snowdin monsters, could've used the blue soul thingy that Papyrus used in his battle, so you'll get used to it more easly. But well it could also take off the individual aspects of the battle, the things that made the battle unique, so yeah, good that they didn't done that.
Also Papyrus's blue attack was a twist.
I think they should have done that with some of Mettaton's attacks and Muffet, though.

Honestly the fights with Flowey/Asriel in the end were so weird and made me believe that I would actually get a bad ending.

The big problem in my eyes for the "good and evil" routes is that it suffers from "dishonered syndrome". This happens when a game (like dishonered) makes you play the game a specific way, and if you don't want to play it that way, the game punishes and reprimands you. Take dishonered, a stealth action game where you use mystical outlandish powers. The game gives you a ton of tools to play around with, but almost all of them are lethal to other characters, and if you kill people, bad stuff happens. This becomes a problem where if you want to play good guy, it's challenging to do so because your arsenal is 99% murder weapons, which is where most of the fun is at, which is the main problem with most of these games. The game makes you play a specific path by hamfisting all the fun aspects into the game, and then skimp out on the rest of the pathways in the game. Genocide feels like it could've been the hard mode of the game if they didn't deligate most of the bosses to be killed in a single hit or make the enemies scale up with you to be an actual threat, but because they didn't do that, the route is a lackluster grindfest with 2 large difficulty spikes the game doesn't even attempt to prepare you for. There's a philosophy when it comes to making games: at the end of the day, your game is good if it is fun.

The "bad guy" path is intentionally designed to make you feel bad, bored, frightened or uncomfortable, it does not reward the player for being a psychotic killer and heroes step up to stop you hence the difficulty spike, you don't just push a hero away easily.

It's a very "Messege vs enjoyment" kind of thing yeah, either you stick 100% to the intent that being "Ethical and good" is in fact, a thousand times harder than just putting a gun to someones head and giving them a 55mm caliber argument they can't refuse.
Or, you prioritize game play, giving options for the non-lethal. I do believe you can achieve both, give non-lethal more tools to deal with the difficulties of not killing, but still having it be significantly harder. I agree with you.

the game don't punish you for killing everyone on your way, there's a lot of murderous neutral run who come naturally and do things correctly to make you feel bad without punish you with the gameplay.
but you CHOOSE to put this to the extreme, you can't ever do a genocide run who come naturally, you're forcing yourself for the curiosity to not play like you feel since nothing bring you to wait a long time in the same room to kill things ; so starting from here, you must accept that things are all forced since you force yourself in the first place to not play like you would want ; no matter if this is curiosity or completion, you do that on yourself in the beginning of the run, so don't blame the game for following you.

Thank you, I've been saying that for a while! Genocide route was so annoying. moreover the Game is moralist as fuck...It's trying to make you regret your decision of going genocide by introducing painful mechanics like long grinding and unfair fight (I mean Sans is designed to be a unfair boss)...It felt like Toby and his crew didn't know how to make a challenging boss fight so instead they went for the die and retry approach.

The problem with Undertale is not the game, nor the fanbase.
The problem is all of the people who generalize the fanbase with hate comments and make it worse, fail to realize that the same crap is in every fandom, and probably just wanted to join the bandwagon.
If someone genuinely dislikes the game, that's fine, and if someone else starts bashing them for their opinion, then just ignore them; don't start a flamewar and tell fans they're horrible if they so much as bring up the game. You could say the same about ignoring the people who type hate comments, but it's starting to get annoying seeing this in the comment section of every video covering the game even when it doesn't include what made people dislike the fanbase in the first place =/

TheCJBrine what I hate about the game isn't just the fanbase, but it's constant over exposure. It's like trying to find a game enjoyable after replaying 200 times. Unless you're a huge fan of the game you'll get sick of it and start to hate it. Because of the fans and the overexposure undertale got, replaying it is just dull and boring. Yes it was similar to Mother, with its quirky dialogue and creative gameplay aspects. But after you play through the game and finish it's runs, you won't ever want to go back. It's a one-time experience for me, and it doesn't help that the fans of the game still great it as a beans new and unknown game. I think some people who really like the gameplay could enjoy it after they're done with it the first time, but apart from them, only huge fans would enjoy it. I don't mean to offend the undertale community, it's great that they're finding enjoyment out of the game still, but imo it gets stale
