It really is unfortunate. A fun model-snap of 'Big' and 'Home Alone' that uses the audience fantasy of those films to explain the appeal behind the concept of Captain Marvel; namely, the 'what if?' of a kid magically becoming an adult or living like one. There are some dropped sub-threads about the conflict between Billy and Freddy, but the macro arc of Billy being grounded by family ties works out decently well. Fun film, overall, and as a filmmaker I think it's a nice teaching tool in some respects.

Shazam came out the night my eight year old son passed away. That Sunday night our families encouraged us to go and get our minds off of our grief. So we went out for dinner and a movie. We saw Shazam and had a blast! My wife, my daughter and my sister in law all loved it! For two hours we were able to forget our grief and for that I am eternally grateful to Shazam!

I wish my father had lived to see this movie. When he was a boy in the '40s, Captain Marvel was his favorite superhero, over Supes, Bats, and all the others of the era -- and when DC picked up the rights in the early '70s, Dad started buying first the reprints of the '40s stories, and then the new stories for me (which I got after he'd read them first!). In return, once I was considerably older, I started buying him the anthology volumes and the action figures.
RIP, Dad. It's been 14 years and you're still deeply missed.

You might think that Zachary Levi doesn't work as the older version of Billy but I think it works on a thematic level: Billy is a kid forced to grow up as he runs away from numerous foster families, looking for his mother; Shazam is the persona that allows him to act like a kid because for the first time in his life he has power and agency.

To me, Shazam! is one of the best superhero movies we've ever had. I think it's better than any single movie in the MCU and DCEU, and stands shoulder to shoulder with the original Superman film as an absolute representation of what it means to be a real HERO. I loved every second of Shazam!, but the moment that sent it into the stratosphere for me was when Billy confronted his mother and said "I have to get back to my real family", then Shazamed his way off the roof to go save them. I still cry every time. Not to mention, sharing his powers with his new family. Truly heroic and heartwarming stuff.

David F. Sandberg came a long way since his LIGHTS OUT short
I love when horror directors make superhero movies
Plus, the fact that a filmmaker with autism was able to make a movie like this is truly inspiring

The original movie had a big heart, wore it on it's sleeve, and didn't care if it was wish fulfillment mixed with superhero tropes. It was a movie that made you feel good. And those are rare nowadays.

I was really surprised how great and re-watchable this flick was! It took me over a year after its release to finally watch, but I love it.
It's too bad the sequel fell short. There was definitely potential, but I think they waited too long, still didn't have a good story, and the drama of DC killed it before it even got to theaters.

WB really messed up by not making Black Adam the villain for the second film. They even set up Black Adam as the next villain in the first film.
Also, Shazam acted way too immature in the second film. Billy is supposed to be almost college age but Shazam acts like a 10 year old.

I was a major fan of Captain Marvel's liveaction show every Saturday (and reprints and new series) as a kid and his cartoon series as a teen. Shame it took so long (almost a century?) to make it back into theaters, but glad he was a hit. Not something I'd go out of my way to see, but I like it being out there and seeing another generation or two running around shouting 'Shazam' again.

For me, Shazam was part of a 1-2-3 hat trick with Wonder Woman and Aquaman. It looked like the DCEU was really finding its rhythm and was going to be serious competition to the MCU, leaving comic book movie fans spoilt for choice. Then the pandemic happened and both franchises have lost their sparkle. They have become assembly line entertainment and are now just Superhero: The Movie kind of movies, indistinguishable from one another.

There was a U.K comedy movie in the 1990's. About 2 men hiding out in a Catholic girl school. Dress as nuns, with a million dollars of the gang's money. It was great, but I don't recall the name of it, was on HBO a lot.

Something about the actors face, especially on the cover with the bubble gum made me irrationally go into the first one with a negative view of it. It was okay. I kept seeing trailers for the second one and it looked super lame with stale Game of Thrones jokes. I'll probably never check out the second one based on that trailer
