- Roy Van Tassel of NJ Drum School performs "South of Heaven" by "Slayer". This video was made to show some of his influences as well as a display of his abilities.
From Roy: "South of Heaven" was the second album I bought by Slayer. It maybe actually be my favorite, although most would cite "Reign in Blood". Dave Lombardo's sheer power and speed along with creativity was something I really latched onto. I used to play to this album a lot. Enjoy!

Dave's drumming on this album (especially) always struck me with awe! He was and still is my favorite drummer, EVER!!!!!! I should go on to say, VERY nice job man!

Well what can I say but THANK YOU! Very kind words and I truly appreciate them. I try hard to get the feel of the original drum part, which is very hard. Sometimes I play the parts as close as I can, and I feel with metal I feel fans are not as forgiving if the part or parts aren't "perfect". Well I grew up on this stuff and tried my hardest to capture the piece, and with comments like yours I guess I'm doing something right! So thanks, and please check out my other videos!

I know about music but not so much about Slayer (other than being name-dropped by other musicians in metal docs.). You were definitely fun to watch-especially the multiple tempo changes&the parts where you were playing the double bass drums&still keeping perfect time (even when you morphed back into the standard time signature).Got Claire a decent (inexpensive) bass last week (Fender Squier Jaguar ShortScale) so she's locked away learning it Got to get her with you to learn interaction.Cool vid!

indeed, you could terribly mess up the fills! Well, I felt in love with your bass drum sound. I keep trying to tune mine to get a decent sound, some guy over here told that you have to lower the head tension until you get some winkles if you put your hand on it and apply slight pressure. I did that, but still doesn't sound good enough, maybe because I still have the stock head.
