My sister passed away last week and yesterday was her funeral. She was a very sweet emotional girl who was a very talented artist and a huge Queen fan growing up. At her memorial I mentioned this song...I hadn't heard it in forever...but it was a favorite of hers and I mentioned it because, even though she was older then me by 6 years, her and her teenage girl friends were always so welcoming to me and let me be a part of their little pow wows and I was recalling one time when the candles were lit in her room and we were all listening to this beautiful song together....What a lovely gift to wake up to this morning! I've been crying again but in a good way. I know it's probably just a nice coincidence that you posted this today..but being the last member of my immediate family left standing...I like to think this was a little wink from my sister to let me know it's ok and that she loves me. Your timing couldn't have been better! Thanks so much for this JP. God Bless
That breaks my heart reading about your loss Gene, and im sorry to hear that. But i hope those lovely memories that you shared with her, through music and otherwise, will always bring you comfort and a smile
My condolences to you too. I also have an older sister who is recovering from a brain tumor. During the operation last week she coded for 2 minutes. What a scare. Reading about the loss of your sister made me cry because I know how it would feel to lose mine and how close it was.
There are so many songs in their catalog that, when you hear them for the first time, you will say "This is the best Queen song!". After a while, you will see that this is the norm. So many amazing songs to choose from to call the Best Queen Song! But I agree, it is a hidden gem!
I do love love this song. Freddie’s voice shows all his supernatural out of this world fabulousness. And I saw this performed live in Hyde Park in 1976, just the piano and him, it was before it was recorded. Not with the chorus, but fabulous and very emotional when you see him sing it, just as perfectly as this studio version.
One of the most unique and one of the most beautiful songs ever. First heard in the middle of the night with dimmed lights and that intro from speakers above my head. Stayed with me forever.
I have been a Queen fan exactly 48 years. way before they was very popular at least in America. So I have tried many many times to list my favorite Queen songs. A top ten list and I can never finish it there are just to many great songs. Most of my favorites are deep tracks that have never been on the radio. To answer your question it is in my top ten songs.
I totally agree with you. It's breathtaking, just the title says. It takes my breath away every time I hear it and tears appear from the depth of my soul. 💔 Utterly beautiful and sad at the same time.
One of the most beautiful and haunting songs ever made and recorded... Perfect... I often think this is my personal N° 1 Queen song, just amazing... I have no words enough
I agree until the arrival of Who wants to live for ever. The harmonies were just Freddie. Freddie wrote this for his first boyfriend David Minns, you should see the live version at Hyde park. Dabid surprised Freddie by going to the concert so just decided to sing this with just the piano. They were together for two and a half years it went well for a while, he also wrote Good old fashioned lover boy. However David became very jealous and possessive ,when Freddie said he wanted out David would threaten suicide eventually it ended but it affected Freddie for a while,he also wrote a song called , Don't try suicide at this time. Wonder why???? Blessings from England xx
The live version from Hyde Park is 💯💥🔥 better, such a rich, deep and beautiful song, thanks for sharing friend 🇬🇧🙏🙂 yes, I defo agree, probably the best song that Freddie sang
Huge Queen fan and this is in my top 10 favorite songs of theirs. Actually, most of this album could slot nicely in the top 10. But I love how haunting and delicate this sounds, Freddie's singing and the straightforward lyrics.
I think it’s incredibly mature, something hinted at in Night At The Opera, more reserved, natural, heartfelt, beautiful. Is it my number one, no, probably number three. Definitely a grower, it seems to elevate every time I hear it, eventually could hit number one. After Tie Yer Mama Down, several of us asked to at least play this… now hopefully you’ve pushed play on this wonderful album. Thank you.
Some days this is in my top 5 Queen songs. Some days it just misses out. The performance at Hyde Park is phenomenal and definitely in the top 5 live performances. Loved your reaction 🤣🤣🤣
Not in my top five Queen songs, but that doesn't mean it isn't a beautiful and phenomenal tune. Maybe a top ten Queen song. Maybe. But on their tour for 'A Day At The Races' it was one of the highlights of the show. Extremely hypnotizing and beautiful. It was our Bridal Dance song back in '83. We basically just stood almost totally still with our arms wrapped tightly around each other, swaying almost imperceptibly, while it played. I still tear up when I think about it.
I absolutely loved 🥰 your reaction to this most beautiful song …… I have just discovered your channel and subscribed. I also just listened to all of your reactions to the album “A Night at The Opera” by Queen…. I really love how much you appreciate just how great Freddie and the whole band were together. Please continue to react to more of Queen …. especially the live performances, even if you have heard the studio versions …it’s just not the same as seeing and hearing the live performances. Have you ever reacted to “Somebody to Love” live in Montreal 1981 or live in Milton Keynes 1982? Same song, but Freddie makes it his own each time…..and is totally different from the studio version. My favorite Queen song is usually the one that I happen to be listening to……pretty much most all of them. Thank you for your reactions …you are so happy and upbeat ….that you make me smile and feel happy 😊.
Evening Betty! Thank you so much for your comment and for watching :)Can't quite remember if I've seen that particular live performance, but Mercury was always a top-star showman! Appreciate you watching!
Thank God, Justin, one of my all time favorite deep cuts by Queen. I'd say most of the "Day At The Races" tracks has a certain genius for being the opposite of the "Opera" album.
I'm not too familiar with Queen after their 8th studio album, The Game, but *very* familiar with 1 - 4, and 6 - 8; for some reason, I never got around to buying a copy of Day at the Races until about four years ago. I've listened to it a few times, but not the way I listened to albums in my youth - the right way to listen to an album. [Side note on that topic: my oldest son just got a turntable and some vinyl for his wife on her birthday. He told me that they sat on the couch to listen to a live album by their favorite band, The 1975. "Dad, listening to an album all the way through is a totally different experience than just having the music, shuffling in the background." "Indeed it is," I said. "Normally," he said, "I would have skipped a couple of the songs - not because I hate them, but because I just don’t love them. But I didn’t want to get off the couch just to lift the needle and drop it on the next track. I discovered listening to all the songs straight through is different experience." "Assembling an album is an art form," I told him. "Listening to an album is also an art form." An art form that, alas, I don't have any time for these days.] And so, I'd forgotten about this song. I remarked to my wife, 'It's a very mature song. Freddie shows great restraint.' That was a great reminder! Thanks, Justin!
I checked various rankings online and this track rarely features anywhere near the top. This proves the depth in quality Queen songs but also the poor judgement of many people who should know better - I'm guessing that it's not high simply because it wasn't released as a single. Of course it's excellent and I can't find fault with it at all.
I like this album more than "A Night at the Opera". This is definitely one of the stand out track. I look forward to what you think of the remainder of the songs.
I’m glad that you love this song so much, but can’t agree that it’s one of their best. Of course, I’m not extremely familiar with this album, so I haven’t heard it a ton of times, and as you know greater appreciation grows for music with more repeated listens.
Yes, agree, definitely a top song! And as probably some have mentioned before, you may want to react to the live version at Hammersmith Odeon 1975, very passionate too, you'll love it.
Dude it boggles my mind that your channel is still so small. There are reactors out there who are not very good with 1 million followers! And you are fantastic what gives love you
Hi JP. DP from UK. Wonderful, classy song from an underrated album. It's all about Freddie's singing of course; the sophisticated harmonies; and the classically influenced piano motif. But is it the greatest Queen song? For me there's a Ghost At Number One, as I'm not picking one. There are just so many classic Queen songs in so many different genres. As for poignant ballads, it's certainly up there, with Love Of My Life, but I probably prefer Who Wants To Live Forever, which was written for a funeral scene in the film Highlander, but is often connected to Freddie's illness and death a couple of years later. P.S. my song ref The Ghost At Number One is by power-poppers Jellyfish.
I can't disagree with the best or top 5. To me, easily top 5. Queen released things that weren't up to par in the later part of their career. I think that I was a fan from early on. Saw them once in L.A. about 1973
It's a great song, but to make it to the "Queen Top Five" you have to match some superlative songs. I don't know if I'd place it that high, but it's in that vicinity, maybe even knocking on the door.
I always thought it was about jogging. Disagree with the top 5 assessment. It's pretty and I like it but for me it's too over the top melodramatic to convey honest emotion or be one of their best. Which isn't always a deal breaker for me but 'Love of My Life' which this song wants to replicate feels more sincere. If you want to hear one of their prettiest songs try 'The Night Comes Down' from their first album.I think it beats the pants off of "You Take My Breath Away'.
Thanks for reacting to that one. It's a great album track, creating a beautiful mood change coming straight after the high energy Tie Your Mother Down. Not sure I'd put in my top 5 though. I miss the well crafted, two side album experience. Most albums nowadays are just collections of singles / failed singles.
So, yeah. I'm not a big fan of middle period Queen (the Marx Brothers' themed albums), but this song is about as good a Bulsara composition as any. In fact, this might be as close to an art song as anything Queen ever put out. An art song, as I understand it, is a composition that can be performed with just voice and piano accompaniment. If a song can be great under those conditions, then it needs nothing else. This is one of those songs.
Honestly at least for me. There isn’t a song on any Queen album up to The Game that is not worth a listen. Not one that I can say yeah that’s a clunker. All really creative, musically interesting. Love this song. That cello like guitar orchestration Brian does in this and many songs grabbed me when I was young and I’ve shamelessly copied it ever since.
My sister passed away last week and yesterday was her funeral. She was a very sweet emotional girl who was a very talented artist and a huge Queen fan growing up. Freddie sits alone on top of my mountain of vocalists. His songwriting is sensational. The chords and form of this piece, magnificent.
I think you would absolutely love the live version of this from Hyde Park. Just Freddie and the piano, it's so pure and beautiful.
Oh yes, Sheila. I'd forgotten that brilliant version. And I was there! It was a free show in Hyde Park, London in 1976.
There are so many songs in their catalog that, when you hear them for the first time, you will say "This is the best Queen song!". After a while, you will see that this is the norm. So many amazing songs to choose from to call the Best Queen Song! But I agree, it is a hidden gem!
Justin, when I was 9 years old this was my favourite song. Not much has changed. So, so beautiful.
You`re so right. One of the best Queen Songs.
I love how the harmonies flow in this song, low and high, very soft but perfect, this song will be in the top 10 best songs of the Queen group for me.
Day at the Races is very underrated imo. This song was written by Freddie - all the vocals and the piano he recorded himself.
Posted this song on FB once, dude commented, "Their worst song ever." He said that because he's dead inside. Its a beautiful song.
One of the most unique and one of the most beautiful songs ever. First heard in the middle of the night with dimmed lights and that intro from speakers above my head. Stayed with me forever.
Probably my favourite Queen song.
You've got to hear the live version with Freddie alone on piano. A must!
My fav Queen song... has been since 1976. Gorgeous production and piano playing...

The man was amazing
Such a beautiful song
For me, Justin, I think that it's definitely one of, if not, the most beautiful song by Queen.
Agree.
Try Millionaire Waltz
He does every album from beginning to end.
There's one track in between before he's doin this one
I totally agree with you! That's an outstanding wonderful song..
I agree. It's one of my favourite Queen songs on the album, and in the top ten of Queen songs of all time, which is a tough place to get into.
I think it’s incredibly mature, something hinted at in Night At The Opera, more reserved, natural, heartfelt, beautiful. Is it my number one, no, probably number three. Definitely a grower, it seems to elevate every time I hear it, eventually could hit number one.

Great point DO, that maturity shines through here
Best rock band there's ever been. 🙃
This is a stunningly good piece.
Freddy does all the harmonies in this one
Another Queen masterpiece.
Some days this is in my top 5 Queen songs. Some days it just misses out. The performance at Hyde Park is phenomenal and definitely in the top 5 live performances. Loved your reaction 🤣🤣🤣
Totally agree with you absolutely brilliant
This is my favourite romance song, so yes, I so agree
Totally agree 💯 I'm a fan and it's in my top 3 😊 Great reaction btw. I love how you do all the album tracks. 👑🔥
It is absolutely beautiful, it's in my list of top ones. Great reaction.
I agree completely, this song is a classic
I totally agree with you! How different is that from Tie Your Mother Down. The ending song also is one of my personal favorites.
Just shows how varied they're approach to music was🙂
Agree...It's gorgeous. Sounds timeless.
Exquisite. The band as well.
Not in my top five Queen songs, but that doesn't mean it isn't a beautiful and phenomenal tune. Maybe a top ten Queen song. Maybe.

Love it, this one gorgeous… even better live ❤❤❤❤
I can’t believe you haven’t played this as long as you been posting music. 😊Great tune from Freddy. Quite romantic ❤️❤️
Yes
You legend JP. Had me going for a bit there. I was spellbound even though I have heard it many times. Not lately however so, thank you.
Thank YOU Dawn🙃
A most gorgeous song and recordings - I agree with you-
At least top 5 and it has been since the first time I heard it

great reaction to a great song love it.
I agree.
Agree
So beautiful
Song is much different live. Really great

Sorry, I was wrong there, live at Hyde Park 1976! (I was confusing it with the song White Queen).
Dude it boggles my mind that your channel is still so small. There are reactors out there who are not very good with 1 million followers! And you are fantastic what gives love you
Ty David :) I don't mind- we have a good community here

i agree also
This is one of the most beautiful love songs ever. Freddie definitely was a creative genius, but I prefer the Hyde Park version.

Those look like nice headphones. It's the best way to hear this song. (I would agree except for the massive number of brilliant songs.)

I agree at least top 20

Top 5?... hmm, maybe, jusy. Top 10 definitely.
Lush sounding and just wished it were a longer track. Never considered it top five myself, but sure is in my personal top ten.
It's good, but it's also a stalker ballad, which is a very unhealthy thing.
Geez where did you pick that nonsense? A stalker ballad? Who on earth would think of that beautiful song like that?
I agree.
