    As a bald man, this video brought me nothing but sadness.

      Bald heads are the best. They require little maintenance, are easy to clean and dry, they are not affected by wind or rain, and never get out of style. I have started to shave my head about 15 years ago when I had to travel a lot in southeast Asia, and decided that that a completely shaved head is the most practical way to go since I have to shave my beard anyway. Now I don't have to waste my time on barbers (+ I save money for their services) and my head always looks exactly the same.

      why, you don't have to care... plus a lot of women are into it (especially when paired with well groomed beard) which mean you don't have to compete with other men ;-)

      Petr Benda Maintenance can be tricky but I just like the feeling of hair on my head,I have pretty long hair(to my shoulders) and I take great care of it. But of course your preference,as long as you dress nicely :)

      Juste un trou d'eau That just sounds a bit lazy,then why don't women do it more often? Every hairstyle sends a different message,I just think there are more sophisticated looks the bald.

    I am a gentleman of color, I have curly hair and I wear it in a Mohawk traditional style (my grandmother is full Native American, as well as her immediate family and before her) minus the short sides and I go for a half faded side, I get alot of complements on it and I learned how to do it perfectly myself, when i wear formal menswear it looks even more harmonious as I'm told, I think this style is a classic style with a modern touch for gentleman of color if you have longer hair and I think if you have short hair then a number 1 or 2 with short sides works for you

    I'm a world war two reenactor, so I generally need to keep my hair in a 1940s German style. Hard taper all the way around, hard part, and long on top. I started doing it at first because I had to. But over time it really grew on me! Plus, if I'm not reenacting I'm able to let the sides grow out a bit.

    Sven, your current hairstyle doesn’t work for you at all. It emphasizes the receding hairline and big ears. You’d look a lot more youthful and virile with more voluminous hair.
    Perhaps ironically, you look best in the “pomade forehead zit” pic.

  • @andrewkoastephens210
    @andrewkoastephens210 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I used to go to a barber that actually learned classic cuts from a guy who was doing classic cuts in the 40s and 50s. Today you really only see hairstylists reconstruct cuts from old photos while using modern techniques.
    For instance, I have rarely seen a pompadour combed correctly. 1. Comb from the part sideways from one ear toward the other ear. 2. Comb only a little from front portion of your hairline toward the back. Having hair combed in two directions is where the height (aka “pop”) comes from. It isn’t just the pomade or gel.
    Also not all classic cuts have to have super short cut sides. Johnny Cash, Elvis, even the Don Draper character had super long hair on the sides. The old slang is “Fenders” vs “whitewalls”. If you have an oblong face (like my horse head) you should probably avoid cutting the sides short. Unless, of course that is a feature you’d like to highlight or exaggerate.

Also my hair don't pick up so much dirt now then to the time where i was using shampoo.

    As a pomade user I would suggest you to try some more maybe not as traditional and greasy pomades than before.
    I use Lockharts Goon Grease on a daily basis and I could never go back to using gel.
    The slickness and hold is great, it is easy to use and it is not as greasy as traditional pomades.
    Pomade never made my pillow dirty or transfered to for example cloth.
    My suggestions for easy to use products: (Waterbased->) Layrite Superhold, Schmiere Hart waterbased or Reuzel Blue and if you want to try an oil based product go for Goon Grease.
    Your hairstyle will hold all day and you can always restyle it!
    And gel also damages your hair!

    • @Mark-hf6uf
      @Mark-hf6uf 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes but this style of short side hairs and relatively long on top wasn't popular at all a couple of years ago, but now everyone has such a haircut, at least where I live. In a couple of years it will go out of fashion again. Timeless? I doubt. Even if people were wearing it in the thirties and a lot of people are wearing that now, it doesn't mean that it is timeless. It is just acceptable for the moment.

      Yeah. My favorite hairstyle is a slickback without the shaved back and sides. That's how I had my hair for years (I was inspired by the Yakuza games as a lot of the characters in them have slicked back hair), but now I just shave my head because my hair is getting thinner and thinner on top each year. Also, something else this video misses the mark on is that men didn't have full beards for most of the 20th century. They either had a mustache or were clean shaven. Every now and then you might see a guy with a goatee such as Vladimir Lenin and Italo Balbo, but it wasn't a common style amongst the average man.

    Hello Raphael! Very nice video! I also have very thick and strong and also wavy hair and as you, I also unfortunately get Pomade acne (I used Murray's NuNile), then I tried a Waterbased pomade, in my case the Layrite Superhold Pomade and it works very well for me. I have a classic side part haircut. Sometimes if I want a bit more shine, I add a very tiny amount of Murray's Hair glo, only on the top, so that my forehead stays clean of acne.
    Greetings from Germany

      I use a lot of Layrite Cement. It's the strongest in terms of hold that I've ever used, and it's got a nice pleasant smell. No forehead acne like you get from oil-based pomades. The Layrite Superhold works nice for me for the first two hours, but as soon as you begin sweating, it's gone.

    My last haircut looked great, then she got the clippers out and in two seconds looked like I had a toupée!
    Second time she has gone too short on the sides, both times took three months to grow out to where looked okay. Keeping it styled behind the ears, most don't notice being too long (helps my hair grows at a glacial pace). Find also fun as can also go tousled/hand combed, with or without argan oil.
    Oh, and would love to go anywhere, but having THICK red hair must be a salon and of those, only found three in my lifetime (moved several times).
    In short, there are at least three additional medium hair length classic haircuts that were missed, but don't seem as common as when I was growing up. The one I prefer is a business with only round fading the back (no fade on the sides), in a side part, shaped of course so doesn't look like a bowl cut including a thinning. Miss the days when men's cuts be pictured on the wall and could say you want a number 3 for example.

    I use Kiehls silk groom serum which keeps my hair smooth, but gives me a perfect amount of hold so that it doesn’t not curl. As for times when I need more hold, I use Kérastase curl fever (yes I know it’s a woman’s product, but hey a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do). It makes my hair slightly more “crunchy”, but it gives a good hold without getting rid of my curls. Just personal suggestions for you all.

    I'm not sure this would work for wavy/thick hair, but one type of hair product you didn't mention is mousse. If you have very fine, straight hair, lots of hair gels and pomades are just too heavy, and mousse is a great alternative. Just apply to damp hair and then style as you would with any other product. You shouldn't use too much--like with the Gordon Gecko look, you don't want to go too 80s with it.

    I have been doing a pomp for 21 years and I hav never used a hair dryer. I have super curly hair and I use a stiff pomade (pom aid is how we all asy it in the states) Murray's in the orange can, or Dax Wave n' Grove for cheaper quality pomade. For higher end pomade Cockgrease big black is killer super stiff pomade. As for a comb a ACE hard rubber comb sold at Walmart for under two bucks is always in my pocket and it is durable considering I am a blue collar man.
    As for dirty pillow cases it is something you just deal with, it is sort of the hardcore rockabilly thing and if you girl gets it she's a keeper.
    Now on a barbershoo always go to a barber not a hair salon, it will be generally hard to find a good barbershop, it took me months when the barber I used since my father took me there as a kid retired, I Believe I went to four different shops before finding the one I use now... A good barber will know what a pompadour is, he will be reasonably priced and on Payday and Saturday he will be busy. He will cut your hair into a pomp ?or what ever style you want) and ask you if you want a DA (ducks ass), as I have gotten a bit older I have gone away from the rebellious look of a taller pomp with a DA that you would see a hot rodding 20 something would have had in the late 1950s to more of a classic trim with more of a conservative style with a nice taper on the sides and the of my head but it still let's everyone in the know I am a rockabilly, punk, hotrodder County boy that longs for a time when men were men with style and class and tuff as nails.
    Anyways my barber is literally a neighborhood shop owner and he charges $12- USA and I always tip useally giving him a $20- spot and Telling him to keep the change and at Christmas useally give him $30- because it is the right thing to do... He has never done me wrong and I absolutely can not complain about his work.

    If one were to watch movies from the '20s and early '30s, he would note that the"high and tight" haircut was far less extreme than it is today. Indeed, hair was longer on top than on the sides or in the back, yet it looked generally symmetrical. The "high and tight" haircut being referred to here is more akin to that of WWI soldiers. A lot of the examples shown seem to align with the "hipster" look, save for Mr. Schneider's own hair as well as the vintage photographs.

      While the comments said here have some truth to them, you also don't have to get a perfectly even buzz, military style/crew cut. You can ask your barber to vary it up a bit and leave more on the top or front. This is the style crew cut I get most often because it comes close to the high'and'tight styles that are popular while also not as long on top, so I don't have to use product in my hair.

    There are incredible and high quality hair products/pomades out there. When you use hair products on a daily basis, it's best to avoid 'drug-store' products and invest on good ones

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's very few pomades as good as Murrays, which is probably the one pomade you'll find on the shelf of any drugstore in America. With the exception of Layrite and Reuzel, most "boutique" pomades found online and at stylists are hugely overpriced and lackluster in performance. I've tried them all with few exception and have only ever been impressed with the Layrite Cement and Reuzel Red.

    • @jerepurba

      I would recommend trying out O'douds.. personally, not a fan of Murrays.. it just doesn't work with me. But if it works for you then all good. Layrite and Reuzel are great as well, being generally available/accessible.
