They wanted to make it seem dramatic and tragic, but at the real execution of Louis XVI, he was actually very calm and collected. His executioner even testified that Louis bravely met his fate.

Louis XVI was actually far better than most of the kings before him. For one he was never suppose to be king but his uncle died and later his brother making him heir. When he was a prince, there was a firework for his birthday that accidentally caused a fire and not only did he apologize (which was unthinkable at the time) he also compensated the victims out of his own pockets. He did his best at economic reform in a time were dept from the 7 years war and american revolution pilled on to 3 consecutive years of bad harvest. He pushed to diminish his personal power and gave a voice to the people by summoning the general estates (something which hadn't been done in centuries). And he was the first noble in Europe to raise his children personally.
The reason for his 'failures' were mostly due to his gentle personality and nativity. Firstly, his son died during the general estates, which caused people to think he didn't really care because he was acting distant and was absent a few times. Second, when advised to massacre the national assembly he refused (something any of his ancestors would have done in a heartbeat), and continued to refuse any use of force until the Bastille. Despite the fact he had been pushing for 'democratic' reform, the sudden loss of power startled him and pressure from his entourage made him limit the national assembly's action. His attempt at fleeing was mostly caused due to insistence from his wife (with whom he actually had a great relationship), most of his ancestors would have simply sent his children and wife temporarily to Austria but he didn't want to be separated from his family.
The reason, Louis XVI was killed was mostly spontaneous anger, the people blamed him for everything and acted with a mob mentality. But for a hundred years after that people regretted the decision. While most people think the french people suddenly became republican over night, it is wrong. Until the late 19th century, the great majority of the french population were royalists and the 'royalist party' actually won elections, holding a majority of seats for most of the 19th century (in the 3rd Republic). The change of mindset happened over several decades and was caused mainly by the 'Jules Ferry Laws' which made school free and mandatory (education at the time was basically 60% indoctrination) and partially rewrote the revolution to demonize the royalty.
All in all, the story of Louis XVI is tragic and he was disgraced posthumously in order to convert the population to republicanism. To this day, the french primary (8-12 yo) education program teaches students Louis XVI and the royals were tyrants hording food and wealth, thought in high school they do nuance it(I know because, as a Frenchman, I learnt that).
If you want to know more I recommend you watch: secrets d'histoire Louis XVI.

There’s a difference between a good man who is a bad leader and a bad man who is a tyrant. Louis was the former, by far. He made the wrong choice, but that by no means labels him as a villain. In all honesty, I’d say he got the short end of the stick from the world.

      Bad weather lead to famine.
The king could do nothing to change that, and the famine continued far after it's death. Revolutionaries didn't managed to solve the problem neither.
People killed him because they were angry. They seeked people to blame, and the king was there, to weak (or nice) to strike first.
I love our Republic, but I have to recognize that our anti-monarchy propaganda was (is) excessively strong.
Our republic is build on the blood on innocents people. I want to keep that house, but I know what was the real cost. Killing everyone wasn't the right answer.
Damn, many other countries managed to remove their monarchy without killing everyone. We, we have created a blood bath in the process.

@AR - 08CS - Robert H Lagerquist Sr PS (1473) Louis actually did the best he could. He was a libertarian and cut taxes and deregulated the economy. His fatal mistake was supporting the American colonists, causing France's debt. The reality is that Robespierre was a blood thirsty tyrant who took advantage of a bad situation. The French should hang their heads in shame over the revolution, not celebrate it.

No, the king loved his wife. Their relationship was only strengthened by their final desperate years. The king was a thoroughly decent human being but never liked being king and he didn't have the killer instincts necessary to handle the awful situation he inherited. He went to the scaffold with courage - like a king. His attempted speech was drowned out by drummers but he did not cower as shown.

Fun Fact in the cahier de doléance louis XVI was neer mention, People adored him, and thought he was just blinded by his advisors who would hide the truth from him. Louis XVI was aware of the need for change and reform of the kingdom but he was too slow and the nobility was inflexible to his demands. The opinion of the French will change when he flees to Varenne where they feel betrayed, and even after his execution is the work of an extremist mountaineer. The people he and the Girondins were widely opposed to his death, hence the period of "Terror" which followed.
