This was freaking amazing to me. I would never think of birds of that nature to be sweethearts. The part where you said they put the nuts out in the street, wait for the cars to run over said nuts, and next red light they scoop em up!! That’s incredible. It’s like seagulls with clams. But this particular talent is mind blowing to me. I’ve been rescuing animals for close to 30 years. I had to stop three years ago due to health issues and living situation. There’s a big void in my heart because of this as it was my privilege to be part of it. God bless you all and animals you rescue.❤️🙏🏼🎉💪🏼😎

Corvids are very intelligent. I remember seeing a story about them stealing the catches of ice fishers. The ice fisherman will use a stick that's wider then the hole in the ice with a line attached. The corvids will pull the string, use a foot to hold the string down and then grab the string by that foot to reel it in. Repeat until the line is pulled and they can steal the fish.

To me that's even more amazing than the nut thing, because there's no incentive other than pure fun. It's one of my favorite concepts in ethology, the term for it is a German word, 'funktionslust' which means exactly what it sounds like, the thrill and love of doing what you do well, purely for that feeling (so horses running around for no reason, birds doing sky acrobatics for no reason, etc). It's remarkable because any action that isn't directly for survival is (technically) a waste of precious calories. But I believe that the more intelligent an animal is, the less life is even worth living if it isn't joyful sometimes, and so it's worth the 'waste.'
With members of the very sophisticated family Corvidae, funktionslust includes problem-solving AND physical thrills, so a crow using a manmade object to turn a snowy roof into an amusement park ride is both those things, and I'm just so glad the Russian family in the neighboring building noticed and captured it on video.
I love to read and or listen to stories about ravens. They are SO SMART and get very few accolades. Thank you for sharing this.

I love Ravens. Me and my hiking buddies talk to the wild Ravens where we hike, and have made friends with a few. They will “talk” back to us and say hi in their own way. They’ll wait for us, perching on top of tall metal power line towers when we walk underneath.

In Vienna, Austria, the hooded crows most definitely do that trick, using cars to crack nuts. You can sometimes see it at the Intercontinental Hotel which is beside their stomping ground in Statdpark. They also drop the nuts from heights.
This bird family has a very unique sense of intelligence.
Birds can be wonderful pets and are surprisingly affectionate towards their human caregivers. Ravens and Crows are very smart birds. It's a shame Poe can't ever return to the wild but at least he has a forever home in a rescue sanctuary.

They are very smart also as a muslim we believe they were sent to earth with a task to show Adam and eve son how to bury a corpse. That Speaks for how long they been on earth to gather knowledge

Me and my sis raise one sweet raven too,when he grew up we decided to let him go.He was in one our building and his parents always were close,so when we let him go they come and left together.We were sad but also happy cuz he can live his life free ❤️♥️❤️God bless all animals and all good people 🙏❤️

yes I have the same - I rescued a raven in 2011 with a broken leg and it was bound by the local vet and he loves flaked corn for breakfast - now 22 I count for breakfast 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Yet another Corvid proving how wonderful and intelligent they are. I keep peanuts and seed mix in my car so I can feed the crows before I go into the shelter office. There's one who sits on the telephone pole waiting for me. He/she knows my car and calls to the murder that it's breakfast time. Soon there's a hoard of beautiful black birds flying in to eat. So wonderful how they manipulate the peanuts to get at least two in their beak. It's our morning ritual and one that makes me smile the whole day.❤️

Poe! My buddy! Know him from when I worked at Dollywood (when he was there) and as a volunteer for AEF. He honored me by letting me scratch his head a couple of times. It has been too long since I have seen him (and Tuck who said "Hello" earlier in the video). I have one of his paintings that he did for me while I held the canvas. Framed and on the wall with a smaller frame with his picture and "about the artist" info below. Poe is awesome! Glad to see him doing so well. 💖

Poe is so awesome! Here in Alaska, our ravens are huge and very playful. Extremely intelligent birds that make seven distinct different sounds in the wild. They have been known to mimic and tease pets sometimes! In summer and winter they will occasionally get on my roof! I just love them! It is so nice that Poe is well cared for!❤️
