    The story of the guy who decided CGI instead of practical reminds me of a story about when Michelangelo was making the statue David. Apparently, one of the people who was responsible for commissioning him to make the statue showed up and complained that the nose was too big. The issue was, he was standing somewhere where the perspective was screwy, instead of below the statue like a normal viewer. So Michelangelo moved him to the right spot and said "Okay, tell me when it's right." He then picked up his chisel and a handful of dust, and pretended to chip away at the nose until the guy said it looked good.

    Another cool detail left out of the film was that MacReady is a Vietnam veteran. In the DVD commentary Kurt Russel and John Carpenter talked about MacReadys military background as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War which would explain his alcoholism and how he was so comfortable using a flamethrower in the film. I believe it's brought up in the comic continuation of The Thing but it would have been cool if Carpenter wrote in a little comment by one of the other characters referencing MacReadys time in the war.

  • @Rithanel

    The molotov theory made me think of that scene more.... Maybe MacReady is smiling because he knows Childs isn't infected and the Thing is dead. Because alchohol is technically a toxin and kills cells. "every little piece was an individual animal with a built-in desire to protect its own life" This awareness of this fact also could have made him sure that he himself wasn't infected as he was wasted all the time.

      The bottles used to make molotov cocktails were plain unlabeled bottles. But the bottle that MacReady has at the end of the movie is clearly a bottle of Scotch, label and all.
      It's also the bottle of Scotch that MacReady drinks from throughout the movie, so he isn't going to waste it even to kill a killer from outer space.

    fun fact macready was written as a Vietnam war veteran with PTSD explaining most of his actions when he took charge to him it was very similar to the Vietnam jungles where due to guerrilla warfare you can never tell who's an enemy and who's civilian until it's to late much like how you can't tell who's a thing and who's human until it's too late and also explains his constant drinking because a common coping mechanism for soldiers with PTSD seems to be alcohol at least back then so when you realize he was written as a Vietnam vet with PTSD his actions make complete sense he drinks to cope with the pain of the war and how he actually fights and acts is actually because he's seen a similar situation where friends and enemies look completely the same and you won't know who's the enemy until they attack and now that he's reliving that on a much more terrifying and disasterous scale he immediately knows how to deal with the threat even if all he knows is that they can perfectly mimic its prey

      @@MarcillaSmith I mean the part in regards to his excessive drinking and how he immediately took charge and made as many good calls as he needed which did actually save some lives like the blood test where only one person died in a case where many people could have died is a theory but behind the scenes it was clearly expressed that Macready is a Vietnam veteran with PTSD it was always talked about when writing the character but was never really mentioned in the movie

    • @MarcillaSmith
      @MarcillaSmith ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ghostface1529 Right. I'm just saying that I've been thinking about what is the underlying psychological appeal to the narrative - what goes beyond "it's a good story, well told" that speaks to people. I'm not saying anything so radical as "Macready dreamed the whole thing," and I think a case can be made for the fear around AIDS (and any number of other things), but the idea that the thing is a manifestation of PTSD - particularly related to the guerrilla warfare of Vietnam - really connects the movie to the cultural zeitgeist around its release.

    The original Thing is my favourite film. When production got delayed they didn’t just sit on it, they went through and layed out the continuity of the scenes making for very little mistakes. It’s near flawless. If there is one thing I love about the prequel though it is that it establishes the metal rejections. So because Childs has his earring on in the final scene it should mean he is real. Also the xbox game is technically the sequel continuation of the story, and childs is found frozen to death in that same spot if i recall.

    Kurt Russell is just being quiet and absorbing all of the info he’s hearing about “the thing”. He’s keeping it hidden because he doesn’t want “the thing” to know what he knows because it could use it against him. “The Thing” is very vulnerable out in the open because it’s very slow at assimilating it’s victims. So it makes sense that it would prefer more of a follower position, and not the leader. Everyone’s eyes are on MacReady because “The Thing” was framing him as itself, and since he’s the leader: “all eyes on him”.

  • @ShadowPredator31
    @ShadowPredator31 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    i love The Thing (original) so goddamn much, but i gotta admit, the idea of MacReady starting the movie super-antisocial and drunk could have really enhanced the paranoia of who could be a thing, how reliable Mac really was and really made them turning on Mac more intense.

    The Thing was one of the first horror films I watched, which was special because my parents used to be super strict. Saw it when I was about 12 (9 years ago). It wasn't very scary, but damn are those effects awesome and memorable. I was amazed when the prequel managed to get the models so accurate considering they were made 30 years apart... though I know a lot of people hate that prequel. Anyone have any opinions on it? I thought it was really good but I do wish they'd stuck more to puppets and animatronic models than CGI.

      Six months later:
      My first reaction to the prequel was that the scientists looked way too young. They were the age of college students. In the interest of Artistic License, I reconciled that it was remotely possible that some kids right out of college could have been recruited. However, people that young and inexperienced would never have been put in charge of such an undertaking.
      The next thing about the film was, of course, the use of CGI; which was jarring for someone who had already seen the John Carpenter version.
      By the end of the film, however, I had become impressed with the attention to detail, and how the people who made the prequel seemed to have made it as sort-of a love letter to John Carpenter's movie. I was especially impressed with how well they re-created the first scene of the John Carpenter movie as the final scene of the prequel, so if you watch the two movies back-to-back, the transition is seamless.

    6:50 I'm not convinced by the theory that the Thing couldn't taste a Molotov cocktail, I mean Blair the Biologist during the dissection explicitly states it has perfectly replicated every organ, that said I do still think that scene does indicate Childs to be a Thing.
    Earlier in the film they discuss getting infected from a single particle so they suggest preparing their own food, Childs seems perfectly fine drinking the bottle after MacReady, so he seems to no longer give a shit about getting infected

    You can definitely see hints of this original characterization in the movie, especially early on! I recall hearing in an interview with Carpenter that the idea was MacReady was a helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War, so because of his experiences there, he was (pardon the pun) alienated from the rest of the team there because few, if any, of them had served in 'Nam. So he was less "abusive" than just...well isolated. It seems ironic he's their lifeline to other camps and the outside world. I can see why they changed him up a bit though, but I'd argue that core character concept is still intact!

    I just realised I haven't seen this video, so ~8min in, when karl mentions the thing not being able to replicate tattoos... and now he has a sleeve, it genuinely freaked me out for a second, then i realised this was recorded before he had the sleeve done.

    Nobody ever talks about the original original. The Thing from Another World (1951), while not as watchable with 2018 eyes, was still pretty good. The whole movie takes place in an Arctic military base in Alaska (working simultaneously for research and as a base for early nuclear weapons detection) and has pacing similar to a lot of way old sci-fi films where the majority is focused on the characters and research and the latter half is dealing with human hubris... Except it's not hubris so much as The Thing is a metaphor for communism.
    At the time people were really worried about communism spreading... Revolution was brewing in China at the time and it did have it's supporters before the infamous Red Scare. It's a fascinating historical perspective dehumanizing the communist movements, but with Stalin in power, I guess it's a little bit deserved.

    John Carpenter's _The Thing_ is one of my top favorite films, and I've watched it dozens of times. Literally not until my most recent viewing, though, did I notice that MacReady isn't the 100%-confident '80s action star that I'd always seen him as. I mean, I'd noticed his reliance on alcohol, of course, but beyond that, there are a ton of quick little bits where he very subtly shows on his face that though he's keeping up his "Fearless He-Man Leader" act for the other guys on the base, he's actually internally extremely unconfident.
    I always thought he just found the science being done on the base uninteresting and not worth his time, beyond the piloting, but this time I realized that comparing himself to the smarter, better-educated scientists gives him self-esteem issues that he desperately wants to hide (and he's almost 100% successful at doing so).
    I never really understood the part when he rewinds and tapes over the bit in his final report where he says that nobody trusts anybody anymore. On this viewing, though, it fit in with MacReady's obsession to avoid showing weakness. Even in a final report that'll almost certainly only be heard after his death, if ever, he doesn't want people to think he might not be 100% coping.
    The part where MacReady gives a scientist the dumbass advice to just "Trust in the Lord" now fits in better, too, with my new understanding of MacReady as a guy who isn't as smart or confident as he pretends to be (see also his baseless accusation of cheating and destructive sore losership when he can't beat his chess program).
    So before viewing your vid, I wondered whether _this_ was the side of R.J. MacReady you were going to talk about that we never get to see. Based on the thumbnail, though, I expected you to talk more about his alcoholism.

    the whole thing about CGI is I can agree with it to an extent. when there is good CGI no one can tell and practically every movie from the past 10 uses it to an extent. Like now a days if a movie has a car chase, its most likely CGI or all the cars around them are CGI. CGI can be very realistic if done right and computers can do that will metal and plastic. but with people... up close shots of CGI people with actual people on scene is not doing it right as we come to the issue known as the "uncanny valley" and we just aren't there yet, but if give it a few years.

    The Thing is probably the closest we are going to get to Lovecraftian horror done right in cinema, of course there are probably some movies out there that do it well that I've never heard of. Haven't seen From Beyond or the Color Out of Space movie, but I'd figure if they were any good they would have some sort of critical acclaim.

    A few points about the Thing and the theories:
    1. The theory about the clothes that Childs was wearing was based off of the original movie and its lighting which was severely orange-y. On the hd release you can see that it's actually the frost on his coat. Also the thing about his breath is that since he's closer to the fire, the draft is getting to him and is warming him up.
    2. There's actually a series of comics that was published after the movie, with the first one being called "The thing from another world", the second one "Climate of fear", and lastly "Eternal vows". l don't know how canon they are but in the first one we are explicitly shown and told that both Childs and MacReady were human.
