    I'm pretty new to MAF and training by HR. When I switched my watches from Pace to HR and slowed down I started increasing millage without being tired or exhausted during the day. That helped me become more productive at work, being nicer to kids (5yo, 3yo and 1yo) and feeling better doing daily routine at home. My goal is to keep everything simple and enjoy every minute out.
    Honestly, I'm watching different podcasts/channels related to running and why I subscribe to your channel (and only to your channel) is because the appearance of the speakers - all your guests are fresh and vital, full of energy, even yourself - smiling, being happy and enjoying life as it comes - and it's not easy everyday. My key takeaway from this video is related to how everything in the body is connected and if you can do one small thing to improve your running (and daily life in general) by 1% why to hesitate - but all other aspects needs to be in perfect balance - sleep/stress levels/nutrition. I'll never reach marathon under 3hrs. but IF (and IF ONLY) I'll be at 3:05 - 3:15 I swear to GOD I'll use all the ONEPERCENT improvements available. :) Thank you Floris for bringing this channel to public audience - all the topics are super interesting.

      @@FlorisGierman Hello Mr. Gierman, just an update after few months of going easy pace with a little spice of speedwork I was able to reach 3:24:19 in a Bratislava Marathon - that's more than 35minutes improvement against the last Marathon 6months back. I have enjoyed every single mile of the run, all the people along the course. The recipe is simple - easy volume, good nutrition, sleep, mindset and mindful running. Thanks again, I learned a lot from your podcast!

    Thank you Floris and Michael. Interesting topic indeed, introduced me to some science that I’m not well versed in. I totally agree that our brain limits us and if there’s a way to keep it a bit happier such that we can hold our finger to the proverbial flame a bit longer, i’m all ears.
    The biggest takeaway for me, how much energy is used by the brain and that fat cannot be used to fuel the brain. I am intrigued in how ketones can help us enter a flow state, and assist us with deep focus, without the need for sugar, caffeine. 1:07:30 … thank you.

    The cost of Ketone IQ is too expensive. Plenty or rest, great nutrition, excellent management of how many “irons” in the fire, and proper low HR training, seems like a much cheaper option. I would have to work “extra” to afford the product and that would take away from the very training time that I need to put in. Lol. Maybe this works for “elite” athletes, but for a back of the pack older ultra runner, its probably best to stick to the tried and true, but boring basics. IF this product was about a third of the listed price, well maybe.

    I found this one a bit disjointed - on the one hand the guest said he didn't recommend a ketogenic diet and then sang the virtues of being in ketosis. Of course the ketosis induced by the expensive supplement and not a dietary one. Why the difference? Seems very expensive for something you can naturally do by just manipulating your macros.

    I would be interested in hearing your guest’s reaction to these two paragraphs that I recently read on the EVOQ website.
    “This becomes very important when we start to compare products, as you will learn that HVMN’s KetoneIQ is not an ester at all; it is simply R-1,3 Butanediol, without the ester bond. This is actually more along the lines of an alcohol that can make you inebriated.
    The fact that Ketone IQ is missing the BHB is a huge problem, as R-1,3 (BDO) alone is in the same family as alcohol! There have been studies showing that subjects in tests felt inebriated when consuming HVMN’s Ketone IQ, and I can attest to that feeling.”
    Thank you.

    Key takeaway, Ketones can be added as supplement and not only by natural ketosis. Also didn't know I could get testers that would measure ketone levels in the blood.
    Question in my mind.. How much less calories a regular guy would need to take in (eat less) during a day when using ketone IQ to avoid gaining weight? Most of us are not tour de France athletes under extreme stress. Not even marathon training comes close. I would aproach this with rather carefully. Lot of questions still.

    • @FlorisGierman
      @FlorisGierman  ปีที่แล้ว

      Great takeaway, I wasn't very familiar with this until last year myself either. Yes, several different ketone level testers out there, some more accurate than others. The pee strips are less accurate. Calorie intake can be the same you would normally take, since Ketone IQ only has 70 calories per serving. There is a appetite suppressant, so you might feel less desire to eat. Keeping an eye on calorie intake and getting in enough calories is an important once too for recreational endurance athletes, as many athletes who train for races like a marathon under-eat.

    As much as I enjoyed this episode, I don't understand how Michel can compare our body to a piece of technology (e.g. a mashine) I love biohacking, but this comparison always leaves me puzzled 😅
    Our body can use different fuels, it adapts to our activity level, it repairs itself, it can't be switched on and off, it's alive, it's unique. How is it like a mashine?
    Thank you for the extramilest podcast anyway! I love every episode. My takeaway: ketone fueling is the carbon shoe of the future and I'll enjoy my fasted morning runs until then. Takeaway no2 is the 2 phone idea. great one!

    • @FlorisGierman
      @FlorisGierman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, totally know what you mean Philipp. I think MB refer to the body as a machine from the perspective of being able to tweak things, modify and optimize the performance of our bodies, in some similar ways as things like a car. For years we knew much more about the inside of our cars than about the inside of our bodies. Now with the continuous tracking devices, HRV measurements in wearables, blood lab tests like Inside tracker, etc we can get a direct feedback loop and make relative quick modifications. For example, wearing a CGM myself, it was incredibly eye opening to read what my blood sugar levels were doing after 3 eggs in the morning, vs a bowl of oats in the morning, night and day with blood sugar spikes and also identifying sensations in your body with data points in blood sugar levels. So to some extent I can see how you can start seeing your body as a machine with fuel in to optimize things. That being said, it's just one piece of the puzzle. The mind has to be in the right place as well, so rate of perceived exertion / energy levels / happiness levels etc all come into play as well.
      Glad you love every episode, that means a lot to me, thank you. Great takeaways right there! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Enjoy your runs!

      Thank you very much, Floris! I can understand it that better now. That Ketone fueling sounds very interesting, once i've fully built that base, I'll give it a try... I "biohack" with Cordyceps and Chaga Mushroom for my long runs some times, it really improves stemina and lowers fatigue and helps with nosebreathing and recovery. Monitoring blood glucose levels is on the list now, too... wish you all the best! Keep the extramilest episodes coming. 👍🙏

    I am transitioning to a low-carb diet. I did the usual carb-load for my last marathon (Publix Atlanta 2023) and felt so bloated and my legs were dead. I was still able to get 2:57 and notch another state under three hours, but I feel better when running with less carbs during my trainings. I will see how not carb-loading for the LA marathon will work out. I guess my body can’t handle the carbs much anymore at 39 years old, haha.

      Well done on your Sub 3 marathon already! There are many ways to go about nutrition in training and racing. This is where experimenting on long runs and journaling your dinner, breakfast and race day nutrition can make a big difference. Personally I wouldn't put all eggs in one basket and leaving these things up to race day to "make it or break it". Training this on long runs will get these potential surprises out of the way. Have a great time at the Los Angeles Marathon, don't underestimate that last uphill towards the finish line. Kofuzi and I surely were feeling those last few miles going up. Enjoy!

Keto is awesome for my body and mind however I do notice a little less energy for runs without healthy carbs and staying under 60 grams a day. MB surely has a lot of BIG innovative ideas and is not afraid to go after it. Glad you had positive experiences with Ketone IQ. Going under 60 grams / carbs a day is very low, especially when you're an endurance athletes. I've tried running on nutritional ketosis and it was simply too hard with family life, traveling, etc. Also during speedwork I felt I was missing a top gear. I personally feel better with some more carbs (still low), medium protein and higher in fat. Before long / hard training sessions and before a race I will increase my carb amount a bit and notice a significant difference. All the best on your running journey!

    58:30 thats a good question. I actually remember an interview years ago from the (at the time) sports nutritionist from the leading Dutch cycling team. She said the whole ketone thing was nonsense and carbs where the way to go for performance.
    A few scenarios:

      That's exciting about your upcoming race! There are many different ways to approach training and racing for a marathon. From my point of view for your first marathon, I'd keep things simple, not going too extreme in either direction. Enjoy your training and upcoming race, you will always remember your first marathon :)

    Key Takeaway: I really want to try Ketone supplements like Ketone IQ to see if it really has a positive effect on cognitive ability and athletic performance. The cost is a massive disadvantage however. Delivery of Ketones is also a key consideration too low and you don’t benefit from the supplement too high of a spike in ketones and you’ll be uncomfortable due to GI issues with less of the performance benefit!
    😅

      1 serving is 35 ml, this contains 10g of Ketones (as R-1,3-Butanediol). When you take this in the morning after you wake up, so in fasted state, you'll notice your ketone levels increase significantly within 15 minutes. I've noticed effects from 1 shot. Tried 2 and 3 shots too. Anything over 2 shots at once, I get a slight headache, similar feeling to being too deep into ketosis, so I don't take anything over 2 shots at once.
