  • What is the Apocrypha and what isn’t the Apocrypha? Is it a Catholic set of uninspired books? Books vital for understanding the New Testament? Should it be included in our Bibles? In our...Canon? New Testament scholar and Apocrypha expert Dr. Joey Dodson guides us through this important conversation with wisdom, wit, and cultural relevance. You’ll see what I mean.
    Dr. Joseph (Joey) Dodson joined Denver Seminary in July 2019 as an associate professor of New Testament. Dr. Dodson received his PhD in New Testament from the University of Aberdeen. He has written articles for journals such as Novum Testamentum, Catholic Biblical Quarterly, and the Journal for Jewish Studies. His most recent books include A Little Book for New Bible Scholars with E. Randolph Richards (2017) and a co-edited volume with David E. Briones, Paul and Seneca in Dialogue(2017). Dr. Dodson’s current research includes a Romans commentary in the Brill Exegetical Commentary Series and a Colossians-Philemon commentary in The Christian Standard Commentary Series. Dr. Dodson comes to Denver Seminary after having served at Ouachita Baptist University since 2008.

    31:50 How can 4 Maccabees be be correct in saying they could overcome sin by the power of the law, when Paul said he could not overcome sin by the power of the law in Romans 7. Only by the power of the Holy Spirit can we overcome sin (Galatians 5 and Romans 7 & 8), unless the standard for sin was lower: not actually actually committing adultery with a person physically, instead of Jesus' standard of not even lusting in our hearts?

      Because they that’s NT. Remember they believed that the Law covered sin on the Day of Atonement.

      @@Sirach144 They believed they were forgiven on the Day of Atonement, but that's not what Dodson is talking about here. Paul said he couldn't stop sinning while under the law. Dodson says 4 Maccabees says "by the power of the law you will not fulfill the desires of your sinful nature."

    More so, as Christians, we told to read the Bible, by Jesus! Only the word of God will bring people to faith in Jesus Christ!

    Apocrypha is part of the bible, even Luther knew that, stop protesting protestant, and come back home, to Rome, to the true church of Christ, the catholic.

    Preston, this video fell on its face. Why didn't you let this guy prepare (according to your own words)? I started this with high hopes and it got totally boiled down to "if you like... Then read..." There wasn't any real information. I'd get more from Wikipedia.

      @Kent Fink Um no. None of what they said is even remotely controversial among Evangelical biblical scholars.

      @@ryanthomasjones you must listen to really liberal evangelical scholars

    • @ryanthomasjones
      @ryanthomasjones 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kentfink9509 Did you even watch the video? No one is saying the apocrypha is scripture. It's literature from the inter-testamental period. As they mention in the video, we would hardly know anything historically after the closing of the Old Testament if it wasn't for 1&2 Maccabees. Conservative NT scholars like DA Carson and Darrell Bock use the apocrypha to give us context for the New Testament ask the time. The fact that it's not Bible doesn't mean it's useless. Otherwise we could never appeal to Josephus either, whose testimony about Jesus is central to a lot of modern apologetics.

    • @kentfink9509
      @kentfink9509 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ryanthomasjones your claim that we would hardly know anything is simply factually incorrect. There's plenty of extrabiblical documentation.
      The simple fact is, that Preston Sprinkle is a wolf on sheep's clothing and you and many others who listen to him let your guard down as you trust him more and more. Ultimately, his progressive leaning is making seeker sensitive Christianity more accepting and his progressive theology is oozing its way into his listeners like a frog on a frying pan.
      You are being deceived like a slow drip. You never notice it till its too late, and suddenly you're reading apocryphal books that, if you knew what they said, you'd change your mind.... for instance, Jesus kills a bird and brings it back to life in The Book of Thomas.
      Now, tell me if that's something Jesus Christ can do?
      Try rubbing 2 brain cells together before you come after me with your uninformed intellect.

      No need to be rude either. Also, I didn’t know the Apocrypha included the gospel of Thomas, I thought it was just the additional 14 books to the OT.

    😂🤣 Christians need to read the actual Bible first, wouldn’t you say?
    I’ve read through the entire Bible over 20 times and have studied many individual books of the Bible several dozens of times; I still feel like I’m just stepping into the waters of scripture.
    I’ve met brothers and sisters who have been raised in church, believed in Christ since they were very young, and were baptized in their teens, who by 20-30 years of age had only read one of the gospels, very little of the Old Testament, and one or two of the Epistles.
    Biblical illiteracy among Christians in the west is enough of an epidemic that they really don’t need to be worrying about the rest of Christian literature.
