    My friend owns an RX7 and knows a guy who owned an RX7 FC. The guy ended up getting a turbo for it and cranked the boost up to 24 PSI which was higher than the maximum of 23 PSI. The same guy got into a drag race with a Camaro. The FC smoked the Camaro but at the end of the drag race he heard a shredding sound inside his engine. The car could barely move after that so he ended up taking apart the engine to diagnose the problem. Turns out because he cranked the boost up so high the apex seal was blown right out of its socket as it couldn't handle the pressure. The rotor then dragged the apex seal around the entire housing which shredded the interior completely. He ended up replacing the rotor and still has the one with the shred marks and gashes sitting on his desk at home.

      One works and the other doesn't, anti-matter is just matter with inverted charges, the only special thing about is that it converts itself and matter into pure gamma-rays if it comes into contact with matter.
      If you somehow were to be able to get a really fast spinning black hole than (theoretically) close to its singularity space-time would bend so much you'd get a closed time-like curve and do things like travel back in time or defy space as we know it.

    a few things wrong with this:
    1: Rotary engines are very easy to maintain, there is absolutely nothing hard about it at all unless being consistent with standard basic maintenance and adding a bit of oil to your fuel is somehow hard for you then that's on you.
    2: The only unreliable thing about a rotary engine is the owner, if the engine fails on you 9.9/10 times it's something that you did (or didn't do) and not the engine's fault. Or may even have been built poorly and/or incorrectly (it happens just like it does with piston engines too). Rotaries do hate boost though, so I won't fault anyone for that (wanna be fast? it won't be reliable. Wanna be reliable? it won't be fast - can be kinda quick though lol). Also something to note is that the old (pre-1986) carbureted rotaries were very reliable, there are still plenty of them running today with up to 400,000 original miles on them. The 13B in my daily driver SA22C is over 40 years old, street ported, makes fairy decent power and torque and came from a junkyard as is and I've put over 20,000 miles on it with no engine related problems at all in the last year that I've owned it (actual car or engine mileage is unknown, ODO is only 5 digits and engine was built in the early 80s and that's all I know). My last RX-7 also had over 261,000 miles on it when it was totaled in an accident and ran great too, so this "unreliable" stigma that rotaries have isn't very well deserved, it's more that it's just not for everyone
    3: You can use rotaries in many different applications including aircraft, boating, sandrails hell even RC cars too (and yes there are RC cars with Wankel rotary engines small enough to fit in the palm of your hand and make about 1ish HP lol)
    Basically what I'm saying is that rotaries are awesome wonderful little engines that deserve more credit that many people aren't very willing to give them. they're simple, easy to maintain, easy to understand and are just plain fun because you can beat the dogshit out of them as much as you want whenever you please (granted that your engine is at operating temp of course). But as I've stated, they're just not for everyone just like pistons aren't for me and that's okay:)

      Crazy_Borg rotaries are actually really simple to work on. They're much easier than most engines, they just have this stigma around them because most mechanics have no clue how to work with them. Usually only rotary owners know how to work with 'em. If you meet a regular mechanic that knows how to work on them, I can guarantee you that they owned a rotary in their life for long enough to need to replace some stuff

    Also may I add, rotary engines have poor breaking performance compared to cylinder engines, requiring a different style to driving.

    as Ernie Brink said, by changing sparkplug hole geometry by a very thin flat hole (height of the hole will have the same thickness as apex seal) , but too narrow hole could diminish the effectiveness of the spark,I think we can go bigger in the height of the hole without really having consequant gas exchange between compression chamber and exhaust chamber. Other ideas from Ernie Brink are very interesting and pertinant and there are still more possibility to improve the rotary engine

  • @WRMonger1
    @WRMonger1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    The only advantage that the rotary engine has is that you can add "banks" (more rotors) to increase displacement without taking up much space. Thus a "4 cylinder" equivalent can become a "6 cylinder" by adding a single rotor to the mix.

    In 1977 My first car was a Mazda R 100. I was warned that they blew up and it did. The seals on the water jacket went, similar to a blown head gasket. My dad took me down to Mazda, we got a rebuild kit, and the best engine manual I’ve ever seen. Step-by-step instructions with pictures. from disconnecting the battery removal disassembly reassembly and reinstall. The overheating Warped the aluminum rotor housings. They were very expensive so my dad had me hand lap them on a lapping table. Getting them down to the 3000’s tolerance they needed. I assembled the motor. My dad tried turning the motor over by hand before we put the motor back in the car. The motor wouldn’t turn, he determined that we had lapped the rotor housings down but not the apex seals. He machined them down, and I reassembled it put the motor in and it ran beautifully. The Wankel engine is a very simple design with few moving parts which is great. I sold the car almost immediately so I could buy the car I really wanted which was a 1968 Plymouth Road Runner four speed with a Posi rear end. The Wankle engine is revolutionary, but you just can’t beat the awesome sound of Detroit iron. It was all a great learning experience though. I was really blessed to have such a smart dad willing to help me. I still have a black-and-white photo of me holding one of the rotors. Over the years I had three Road runners. I still have my 73 barracuda 340 with a pistol grip four speed which I bought in 1975. Sorry Mr. Wankel but Chrysler really is the king of cool.

      The real doktorbimmer Daddy, I call them rotary just to piss you off, it obviously works. I already gave you a link to the Mazda's official website, where they call it rotary. You still did not learn that both names are correct and you know that by rotary I don't mean radial piston engine. It's pretty common. So stop being overly correct and pull the stick out of your ass. HE IS JUST STUPID *Funny, I watched a video or a rotary engine, called "Rotary engine", with 4 rotating rotors in rotor housings. You must be the only person that calls a rotor "Wankel orbiting piston*". Pioneer KURO plasma displays are still without a doubt the best TVs in the world. I wonder why they stopped making them 5 years ago. Hell, all plasma displays are better than LCD. Do they still make them? No. CRT displays are better than LCDs too. They do not make them anymore... Big displacement engines are better for cars. Again, no production of big engines (4 or 5 liter) for common cars in Europe. Skoda is the most popular car in some countries, while it's more than obvious that they are complete crap in every sense. Maybe it's time for you to understand that better things are not always more popular and are often replaced by worse things. Because people purposely want to have worse things...strange, I know. Can't wait to see you on "RX9" videos, if they decide to use Wankel engine. See what I did there? I called it a Wankel so you don't have to desperately cry and cut your forearms with a razor anymore. Is the purpose of your life to fill every comment section of rotary engine videos? I can't wait to see another reply not answering this question, but it will contain words "Wankel KKM", "Otto" and "obsolete

But before it could ever be perfected the general public all agreed to go back to the old style piston engine. Had the population not rejected it cars could have better and more efficient engines that were simpler and eventually when the bugs were out of it would have been the superior engine.

    Rotary Fun Facts: A 350cc Wankel engine was used in the prototype Mazda2 EV as a REx. The engine is almost inaudible.
    In some Mercedes and Volkswagen cars, the seatbelt pretensioners activate by sending some gas to little Wankels that eventually start and pull the seatbelt. I never knew that!

    but not as good as a conventional four stroke. This eventually became
    the downfall of the Wankel design

    Summary
    Piston = reliable
    Rotor = empty pit for a brap noise
    With recent technology and innovation the claim of ''but the rotary revs to 9-11k'' (outdated comparison) pistons can do that as well - with more torque/hp reliably

Of course 23 liters per 100km fuel consumption and 100-150k km life length is quite sad news, but despite that the emotions that this car gave me worth that. The rotary has the same benefits as a two stroke piston engine: With less space and less moving parts they can achieve more rpm and more power, but they suffer from the same weaknesses aswell: Bad fuel economy and horrible emissions because of a lot of unburnt fuel and actively burnt oil, but they could also be fixed in the same way by simply applying todays technologies to these old engine designs: Boost, direct injection and maybe even HCCI. Sadly the two stroke didnt survive until those became popular but we kinda see the idea when looking at the two stroke diesel engines that dont burn oil and achieve selfignition while keeping the advantages of the classic two stroke. Maybe we will see something similar in a rotary someday but its a very tough nut to crack.

      +Chuckiele All Wankel KKM designs use the 4-stroke operating principle, 2-stroke Benz-cycle engine have fewer parts, and can actually rev higher. The 2-stroke reciprocating concept is vastly superior in all aspects to the Wankel and is still in mass production while the Wankel has become obsolete.

      +Chuckiele Not true, The Wankel engines inherently weak sealing system and poor combustion efficiency make it poorly suited to high manifold pressure forced induction. GDI was already tried back in the 1960's but the Wankel simply cannot support the high static compression ratios required to achieve significant performance gains with direct-injection stratified combustion. HCCI??? How? Its not possible to adapt VCR, VVL or VVT to the Wankel... its limited to port induction and exhaust and does not generate high enough static compression. The Wankel is obsolete... for some very good reasons... it is an inferior design that no longer offers any further development potential. RIP 1964 - 2012

      Youre the one living in a state of denial, im living in a state of hope, you should try that too, might make you able to get rid of some of your negativity, because even if there is absolutely no evidence of something to happen, why would you remind yourself of that over and over again if you could just be positive and wait instead? Anyway, if by that technical feature youre refering to any sort of valve control like you mentioned above, I dont see a reason to implement them into an engine that doesnt even need valves, you can control injection and you can control ignition, what do you want more?

      +Chuckiele Engineering is not a "faith based" endeavor son, it is a science that must comply with the laws of mechanics, and the laws of thermal and fluid dynamics. Mazda manufactured the Wankel KKM longer than any other company and they have not released a new production Wankel engine in 23 YEARS! So I sincerely suggest if your hoping for the Wankel to comeback? That you don't hold your breath!

      All science is based on faith, you may not accept that but there are no true laws in science, they are just valid until they are proven wrong, and they eventually will and so will you. HCCI isnt even properly utilized with valve control yet, so how would you know that it cant be achieved without?

      TheBlibitty Blab a small turbo works for low revvs, however a rotary works from 3k to 10k revvs so it is impossible to have a single working turbo on it, and even if you manage that (variable turbo's do exist) is has to cope with insane temperatures, which makes the turbo insanely expensive...
