After this song blew up and went viral, the leeches from the record companies came crawling to him. One offered him 8 million dollars... and he told them, "No." He didn't want to sell out and wanted to remain his authentic self. He doesn't want fame or money. He just felt something so strongly that he had to get it out. He is truly an amazing guy. It takes a lot of heart to walk away from life changing money like that. Kudos to him.
He'll make more money as an independent artist and can maintain his ability to make music the way he wants to. Just like Tom McDonald. I'd rather see him playing at a county fair than a stadium, and I'm sure he'd rather play at a county fair. The ability to control the trajectory of your craft is priceless.
Oliver has just attained the American Dream by spreading his words of free speech through his beautiful powerful voice. He will stay humble. I can feel it. He will not stop. Thank you for your reaction. Christopher “Oliver” Anthony and his three dogs live in Farmville, VA, on a 90 acres plot of land that he plans to turn into a small farm to raise livestock. Oliver’s goal is to give hope to and lift up working-class folks who are struggling daily to make ends meet in this upside-down world. This young man has character and integrity and just turned down an $8M record deal, as major labels are vying to sign him. He has a collection of songs on his YT channel (@oliveranthonymusic) and more on various streaming platforms, but “Rich Men North of Richmond” is the song that put him on the map literally overnight around the world. The fact that this song got over 24M views since its debut tells you that the message transcends age, color/race/ethnicity, religion, political affiliation, and even nationality, and resonates with ordinary working folk the world over. This should be mandatory listening for everyone in government, whether elected, appointed, or just employed. Even though "the rich men north of Richmond" is a reference to politicians and “power players” in Washington DC., and probably to the financiers on Wall Street, it equally applies to politicians and the “elites” anywhere. The fact that the usual suspects are already calling this the new “right-wing anthem,” means the song has struck a nerve and is right on target. "I wish politicians would look out for miners and not just minors on an island (Eppstein Island) somewhere" is certainly an indictment of the elites who seem to get away with their crimes too often. Not wanting your taxes, which fund food stamps to be used by recipients to buy junk food (fudge rounds) does not imply that one is against food assistance programs for the truly needy; it just means that benefits should be restricted to essential, and relatively nutritious food items. I hope this anthem will wake up more people and get us ordinary folks to unite and take a stand before it's too late. May God bless you and yours.
