Very rarely have I seen anyone play any Raagam as melodious as Mandolin Srinivas has played and this one is no exception, or perhaps one - there is no one I have heard playing Kambhoji so melodiously. Every note that he is playing seems to say "I belong to Kambhoji".. Hats off to this genius and you are immortal - your passing away has left an irreplaceable place in the world of Music!
Tears swell my eyes when I see Mandolin Shri U.Srinivas toying with that instrument. It was redesigned from a 7 string instrument for Western music to adapt the Indian Classical Carnatic music to a 5 String instrument. The result is sheer magic. Seems like he was sent into this world with a mission. The musical instrument is indeed blessed to be today identified with him. The world will miss this genius. RIP Srinivas garu.
The drone sound is from the tambura. The woman in the background is running her fingers across the strings repeatedly to generate the sound. Although those things can be substituted using electronic devices these days, a lot of purists prefer the "warmth" of the genuine article. It's the standard background soundscape used in movies when representing "India." Westerners often mistake it for a sitar because they're unaware that there are stringed instruments in India other than the sitar.
Pretty much like heavyatheart mentioned. The head is from a guitar, but he uses 5 strings tuned CGCGC. In Indian music, since notes are defined as a "shape" rather than a pitch, the only real definitives are the tonic and the fifth. Similarly, the violinist also tunes his strings CGCG. The drummer also tunes both sides to C (the bass side one octave lower). More accurately, I should say tonic-fifth-etc. since the tonic can be different when accompanying a singer who sings in some other key.
Well.....if we have to describe how Shri U Shrinivas plays....we will surely run out of words....HE'S THE BEST....the maestro

for him it is like child's play. Interesting to see how he uses fingers to pick on the top strings.
where is the drone in the background coming from
yes a five-string solid body with highly resonant exotic wood (my guess)
What kind of distortion does he use with his mandolin? What's a 5-stringed mando- called?
DUDE IF U COULD CHANGE THE USERNAME IT WOULD BE MORE APPROPRIATE FOR THE CHANNEL .
JUST A FOOD FOR THOUGHT !
only echo and delay. nothing more.
