      Phillip McKnight, I'm interested in the HB 35 Plus Vintage Burst with their Thomann gigbag and was wondering if you would be willing to get one and do a couple of mods I want and I'd pay you for it. I'm interested in DaVinci tuners: www.allparts.com/TK-0972-010-Schaller-da-Vinci-3x3-Chrome-Keys_p_3759.html and also a thornbucker with nickel cover in probably the neck or bridge depending where you think it would sound better. I know it's not what you had in mind but I'd be willing to cover the costs. Please let me know. Thanks

      Every guitar player should buy new Gibson, that is in their price, forget the lower rung instruments. Be happy with one great guitar, at a time than a dozen so-so guitars. I’ve done this and have been happier than G.A.S.ing and watching TH-cam videos.

      Suggestion for the Harley Benton thing: there's a new refresh of the lineup coming, which is a bit more upscale than previous HB guitars.
      Those would be a good choice since you'd probably be one of the first channels to show them off. The most interesting ones are probably the TE-7 and the Fusion HH or HSH. And if you were to add a mainstay from the "old" line to that, my suggestion would be the TE-90FLT. The PRS clones are done to death on TH-cam, so I'd avoid those.

    The only thing that matters about Harley Benton is this: Are their Fender copies better than equivalent Squiers and are the LP copies better than Epiphones? If they’re better, people should buy them. If they’re not, people should stop giving them lip service. The main complaints I read are 1) they’re heavy, 2) frets aren’t smooth, 3) poor QC. The weight thing is fine. Squier and Epi do a good enough job that bad QC or frets just can’t compete. Your channel is awesome. Thank you for the great vids!

    Dragonfire pickups Vintage Buckers absolutely rule! Before them I used a dimarzio 36th anniversary paf style and i think the dragonfire was a little better. I threw them into a stock ltd ec256 and compared to the stock pickups, they were a massive improvement. More clarity, more highs.

    I restored my 1991 Ibanez RBM-1 Voyager last year and put Dimarzio pickups in it. An F-spaced Gravity Storm in the bridge, Satch Track in the neck, and a Fast Track 1 in the middle position. HSS configuration. The Gravity Storm is wired to a 3-way toggle in series/split/parallel and the whole thing is just a monster. The guitar was in rough shape when I received it about 13 years ago. It was originally Cherry Red but when I got it, the body was stripped down to the raw mahogany with "SEX PISTOLS" spelled out on the face of the body with electrical tape. I ended up sending the body to Marty Bell out in California for a professional re-finish. Went solid jet black. I left the neck completely original because I didn't want to ruin 27 years of mojo. It still has the original Gotoh tuning keys on it and they still work great.
    Where I'm getting at is that Dimarzio's are great pickups and the Gravity Storm is a lower output humbucker that can still be brutal for intense metal. :)

    My idea for the Harley Benton reviews:
    1. The modding project: Any of their ash body Telly style guitars. The te-30, for instance, costs roughly the same as the HB DIY guitar kit
    2. The "exception": I'm a strat/LP/ (you name it) kind of guy, but for either aesthethics or sound I'd like to try this HB. In my case, it would probably be the JA-60, one of their cheapest guitars with P90s and an offset body. But there're lot of different options for different people: hollowbodies, that SG with 3 humbuckers, the Prince telly copy, 7/8 strings...you name it
    3. Top of the line: The PRS style guitars seems to be their "top dog"

    My brother bought me a Harley Benton for my birthday. Happy Birthday to me!
    It is rather annoying that they are all copies. How much trouble would ti be to have something unusual!! Still, I like my Telly copy and will have fun modding the hell out of it.
    The comment that you're review would be valued as honest and unbiased is very true. It would be interesting to hear what you think of them.

  • @KozmykJ
    @KozmykJ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Phil, the deal with the Harley Benton guitars are that the cost savings are largely made in the level/absence of Quality Control at the factories.
    Thomann “claim” that they inspect 100% of throughput at their base in Germany but that has many people doubting that. So the gamble is whether or not you get a good one when you open the box.
    To be fair to Thomann they make it easy enough to return a dog if you get one so your only loss can be the nuisance factor if you need to RMA.
    Of course that nuisance involves a longer wait for those in the Americas than for us in Europe but that' all it is really.
    I ordered 5 HBs in 2017 and I'm living happily with 4 of them. HB35+ (339 style), SC-450 P90 GT (LP style), CD-Custom Cherry (SG style), SC-450Plus (LP style)
    One had to go back cos there was no way to fettle out the problems (plural) that it had. Turns out that that particular model, TE-70 Black Paisley, and the factory that produced it had a lot of issues for people back in Spring 2017; which it appears have now been rectified.
    I was going to choose a different Tele model from the HB range when a sweet deal on a Vintage V2 tele appeared so I grabbed that one instead
    My first HB was the HB35Plus which was fine 'out of the box' but the action was only OK. To get it down to US factory equivalent height with no buzzes required a fret stoning, which I did and quite enjoyed the learning process involved. Now she plays as sweet as one could ask for and has received compliments from pro guitarists.
    I'm a bass player by trade btw, my guitaring isn't up to the same standard as my bass playing... Yet (positive thinking Koz, positive thinking).
    The other three have been sweet with very little attention needed. It's not uncommon to have a few rough fret ends to have to deal with.
    The cheapest one of the lot, my SC-450 P90 GT, required no special attention beyond arriving with 9s on it when I expected 10s. Thomann sent 10s. She had smooth frets and a low action. Just to suit myself I lowered the P90s and raised their pole pieces to get a bit of a more vibrant tone.
    Once you get above the bottom rung of the Harley Bentons you find a lot are fitted with Wilkinson hardware and some have Grover tuners.
    The bottom line for me is that for less than $800 I got 4 nice guitars which I use regularly alongside my Fender, Ibanez and Yamaha guitars.

    Phil - a lighter guitar doesn't mean that the guitar is more dried out, it just means that the wood is lower density. Gibson wouldn't build guitars with wood that was more than 10 or 12% moisture, and probably not more than 8. The moisture is a very small percentage of the weight. However, common medium hardwoods have a huge variation in weight, as do softwoods. Some older pine is more dense than typical cherry, and some cherry is more dense than typical oak (not often, but old growth). Woodworkers will generally see the more dense wood as better quality, not sure what Gibson thinks (they may be using their tighter grained wood on more expensive guitars).
    In the grand scheme, it doesn't make any difference in a guitar other than the weight of the guitar itself, and perhaps an electric guitar will feel resonant if it's lighter, but I doubt you could hear the difference.
    There is a HUGE difference in indian rosewood in old growth versus plantation growth. Old growth is tightly ringed and very dense, and plantation grown (which is probably 99.9% of what we see in fingerboards) is not particularly dense in relative terms. Still much more dense than honduran mahogany or other formerly popular guitar woods, but not of the same quality.
    I think the average guitar buyer is pretty uneducated about woods in general, and they're often misled intentionally by makers.

    Thinking about the Harley Benton review idea... It would be interesting to see you do a Sharpen My Axe makeover on one with the idea of taking it to the point where you would be "happy" with the guitar.
    How much work you have to do to it, and how much you have to pay(!!), would give us a good indication of how good the initial product is, and would we be better off digging into our wallet to get something slightly more expensive.

    I'd love to see you review some Harley Bentons. Have a look at Cory Mura's four videos on Thomann's new prototypes (apologies if you have seen them), they will be in the 299-399 Euro range; some have got ebony fingerboards and stainless steel frets, an will be called the 'Fusion Pro' range. I think they're considering doing some baked maple necks too with better electronics, hardware and possibly proper maple caps, not simple veneers. He says that Thomann want all of us to give feedback on what we like and don't like about them and come up with suggestions for ways we think they could be improved). Cory also chats to the guy in charge of the Bentons, which is interesting (he's says that Thomann have be surprised at the level of interest in this brand and want to see how they can develop it). Love your channel. Cheers, Ronnie.

    Hey Phil
    How about a semi hollow Tele Harley Benton. I’m not looking for one and I could be wrong but I don’t think you have a bunch of Tele’s.
    What I am really interested in is if a Harley Benton is a solidly built guitar that would be a great base for a project guitar. Some of their Veneers look great. I would really like to see you do a “Sharpen my Axe” on maybe a PRS style Harley Benton.
    Would it be killer guitar with Graphtech Bridge, Nut and locking keys? Swap the input jack and pots with some aftermarket Alnico PUP’s?
    Maybe a chance to also review some of the lower priced Alnico pickups like Iron Gear or Guitar Fetish?
    For me, that would be a fun project.
    Food for thought.

    The Tyler sharpen my axe was one i specifically didn't watch because of its lack of interest to me. I don't know how others feel but to me that didn't generate interest, it did the opposite. I'd much rather see guitars that need work. Love the concept and hope you keep it going just with more guitars that require work rather than a few little upgrades and changes to already perfectly functioning guitars. Just my two cents.

    Agufish and MANY other youtubers often fail to mention if the product they're reviewing is provided by the manufacturer of if they paid for it with their money. Or if it is a paid review altogether. Sorry but I don't trust ANY of this guys who aren't crystal clear about this matter.

      100% agree except you don't have to be sorry for that. Honesty is the #1 thing, when I watch a video I have to know if it is an indipendent review or a kind of a paid commercial...

      David RF . Agufish, buys all the guitars he reviews ? Highly unlikely, just my take. Actually I’m having a hard time with many you tubers . I need to work all day, just to pay the rent on my apartment and feed the family. I don’t have a glorious mini mansion Or fancy living room, filled to the gills with expensive gear . That wasn’t aimed at any one in particular. Ha ha

      @dalepal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with the general statement but unless something has changed Agufish has said he has an arrangement where he buys guitars from a local store and returns them for credit after the review.

      @Mabufu381 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      agufish is INCREDIBLY transparent about the fact that he has a sponsorship with Sam Ash for a lot of his gear, where they send the guitar out, he reviews it, and sends it back. He's also incredibly unbiased and will slam a product if its bad (there was a gibson review or two where he was NOT happy at all, and his favourite guitar is a vintage les paul). Honestly cannot reccomend the dude enough, his demos are playing in a mix and isolated, he includes his DI files like Fluff does, and again he has nothing to gain from his reviews that he doesnt tell you about in the video (he has a sam ash affiliate link)

    • @DavidRFIT
      @DavidRFIT 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      James Parkin mentioning these things somewhere, in some video, every once in a while, is pretty far from "INCREDIBLY transparent", as you say. If you are transparent your big interest is to clearly specify where and how you get the gear you are reviewing in EVERY video review, and not in the description or in other places where 1/10 of the audience see that. You have to do it IN the video, by saying it or writing it on screen. That is transparent. I don't ever recall Agufish doing that, at least in the dozen of his videos I've watched. But I took Agufish only as example because Phil mentions him in the video. My issue is with every youtuber who is not "INCREDIBLY transparent". I follow many youtubers and only Phil is 100% like that.

    Regarding Gibson Quality: they are trying to sell your a guitar at yesterday’s specs. That’s like getting a reproduction 59’ Corvette and asking for it to be spec’d like a modern car. Maybe that’s what Gibson’s Pro series should be. Like the ultimate resto mod and leave the Traditional Series alone for those who want a classic. And a great Preamp is the Strymon Riverside Drive

    I own a Gibson LP traditional, and a Gibson LP les plus.. I just got my harley benton sc550, and I like it more than my gibsons. I really do. I like the way it plays and sounds, I have not changed anything on it. I tuned that bitch after it's trip to America one time, and that thing is still in tune..lol Crazy. I don't care what anyone says, This SC550 is kicking my Gibsons ass.

    Hey man, I have a question for you.
    I'm new at Luthier-ing, and I'm trying to build my first guitar. Going with a modernized strat, using a lot of pieces that you've recommended on your channel, actually. Anyway, my question is this:
    I'm buying a pre-built neck that already has a finish, but I'd like to use a darker finish on the fretboard than the one StewMac uses on their necks. Would it be possible to sand that down and refinish, or would that require refretting?
    You know what would be cool? If you went on stewmac, bought the pieces, and built a guitar. Maybe do it over a couple of episodes.

    1mm action on the low E at the 12th! I thought i had my guitar set up low at 1.5 on the low E and 1 on the high E. I can't get any lower without unacceptable buzz, even after doing my own fret level. Maybe a professional could do it better, or maybe my picking style is too heavy. Probably the latter.

    Have a riff-off. Who ever sends u the best riff based 16 bar piece of music wins the guitar. Have 1,2&3 place winners for respectively priced pieces of gear ie. amp,guitar (or vise versa depending on price) or pedal.Have the viewers who didn’t send an entry in vote on winner. Play the tracks anonymously.

    acoustic simulator pedals won't sound right if you are pushing it thru a guitar amp....use an A/B switch and send thru an acoustic guitar amp or straight to a main.....you need a different speaker array to get the sound

    Like I say about Harley Benton, Agile, J&s guitars, we don't need to buy a guitar that starts with an "F", and ends with"ender"! They keep their money (cost) low, because they can't get the "F" & "G" guitars!

    Hi I think I'd let us share this before I am to Gibson's I love them they work perfectly to sit and finish on them beautiful and sound great and in 2018 when the new Gibson came out I looked at Sweetwater I always wanted a Firebird and they were advertising Cyberchase 1350 dollars I'm sorry they were advertising the guitar with an amazing case so $1,350 and since I was out of state there was no tax the guitar weighs 7 lb 13 Oz which is not heavy for a Firebird but it is beautiful there is nothing wrong with this guitar I guess I can say I'm lucky or I guess I could also say people that get the bad ones p and by the way so I once heard you make a comment about Firebirds saying that you really are not in to plenty guitar but if you look closely at a Firebird there are no sharp angles and no point it all on that guitar you won't find one pointy part of that guitar LOL anyway as you can tell I love Gibson and I love my Gibson and I love your show I look forward to Friday's for you and live Q&A keep them coming

    • @daw162
      @daw162 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      handmade is an interesting term. There aren't any guitars that are hand made that I'm aware of. I guess something that isn't CNC and then sanded these days counts as hand made, when a lot of those hand made guitars aren't even as hand made as jigs and duplicarver.
      I've tried twice so far to make a good clean guitar entirely hand made, all the way down to excluding power tools, and I can't make anything that looks like a good factory made guitar when you really look at the detail level (even the little things like the cleanliness of the binding channels).
      An extremely accomplished luthier confirmed that. "Dangelico guitars were made by hand. You can tell when you look at them, everything's not as perfect as a factory guitar".

      oh.. well it was a great idea for sure. But there really are like a thousand YT'ers doing videos on these for sure.. They do have a few that I'd be interested in. They have a "falcon" style that looks interesting and for the price.. and a couple w/ P-90's I'm interested in. I do like that these aren't just the "Chibsons" Good to see more people get off that and head towards the HB's etc instead. And honestly, HB's cost less than most Chibsons (etc) I've seen lately. But, I will not criticize anyone buying either of those, cause a guitar in someones hands are better than not. As long as kids are playing and continuing to keep music going I'm good no matter what they play.. For me, I'm done putting big money into big brands.. I'm more about just playing at the house anymore. I'm 45 and it's all about just the hobby of working on and playing..So HB's are the way for me to go..:) Love your channel by the way. Lots of great info..

    Would TH-cam increase your monetization (sp?) for the Sharpen my Axe Vids if you split them in two? Since individual videos are more important than video length, you might increase your metrics. 80-90% of viewers who watch vid 1 would watch vid 2 if they were released at the same time.
    I could be wrong, not having my own channel so I am not privy to the Sorcery that is the revenue stream of TH-cam. ;)
