@sarah8seado you even understand the entire reason why he made this song. It’s supposed to be abt himself, Kendrick feels like he’s losing himself ( like most rappers).
@sarah8sea he literally continues the story from GKMC by saying that when his other friend died (on sing about me) he was too full of himself and his newfound wealth to do anything more than facetime him in the hospital, one time. not to mention the drunken rage he manages to perform while speaking from another one of his friends’ perspectives, seeing kendrick get pimped. this is the kind of shit english professors break down word for word.
@@original_USA_cowgirlhe’s referring to the devil “Lucy”. The devil and his workers know the bible just as much as anyone else if not better, therefore they are also within the church too.what makes you think there's popes that molest children, popes Killing baby's, pastors committing adultery etc. Why go to church if you scared when the devil's ghouls are there to take advantage of your vulnerability with manipulating u to do much more sin???
People complaining about this not being "danceable" are the ones Jay Z was referring to when he said, "Do you even listen to music, or do you just skim through it?" This song follows the most danceable track on the album, "These Walls." Its purpose is to signify a massive shift in tone. After experiencing the highs of fame and the abuse of power depicted in "These Walls," the narrative transitions to Kendrick screaming in a hotel room. This shows how quickly one can fall from an artificial sense of happiness when fame and gluttony is involved. This song represents thoughts of suicide and the road back from it. It's meant to be uncomfortable; it's meant to make you cringe, and for fucks sake it is DEFINATELY not meant for dancing. There are people in this comment section who are alive because of this song. I hope you aren't thinking of them when you write something that tries to discredit this as music.
I don't even think it's not even this undanceable, it has a good flow to hear but it's kind of a disrespect at the same time, U is such a good song to hear, and i read it on repeat on Spotify
What really pisses me off is when I told people that this album was the absolute best rap album, if not the best overall album ever made, they just laughed at me .-. People won't truly appreciate this man until he's dead.

Both are Amazing Artist. Both have made Albums that are impactful. Cole hasn't and might not make an album no where near as influential as TPAB. He did make one that, personally for me, has made an impact on a lot of listeners. Especially myself (KOD being that album). I wouldn't go as far to say Dot is miles ahead/way better than Cole. Dot is the best and Cole is second. But that margin isn't large. All this time… I thought it was Lucy… Lucifer that was offering Kendrick sin and temptation… he was talking about Lucian Grainge… the head of Universal Music Group… the most powerful man in music… ironically Lucifer was the angel of music… they both may was well be the same… this whole album shaped round with Lucian exposed KDOT to… Lucian offered KDOT to play in the garden of earthly delight… protection from accountability… in exchange for a 360 deal I can imagine… but I think KDOT was prayed up… turned it down… still managed resist the offer and has been recovering ever since… that kind of money…power … and endless women… is hard for any man to resist. I pray protection over this man. He on this earth for greater.
For whoever is confused by this song: It's about him keeping his Christian faith even though Hollywood and fame makes lots of evil temptations. He is also talking about trying not to become corrupted. Kendrick has not sold his soul guys.
I just realized this but I'm not sure if I'm slow, or I'm the only one that realized this. On the album, "U" is played before "For Sale?" And "For Sale" is a song about the devil (Lucy) trying to talk Kendrick into selling his soul. When you combine the two song titles you get "U For Sale?"
TPAB is the greatest album I’ve ever listened to and u is one of the darkest and saddest songs I’ve heard. “i” is such a sensational song and so positive. The blacker the berry is a very angry and such a powerful song Kendrick uses all these emotions on this album and does it so well All the songs on the album are all amazing and there is no bad song on it One of the greatest rap albums of all time no joke 1000000000000000000000/10
I love that line in the second song that goes, "they say if you're scared go to church. But remember, He knows the bible too." It gives me goosebumps every single time. Kendrick is an absolute genius and is one of the few rappers who truly is an 'artist'. This is art.
To all the people saying he sold out, actually listen to what he's talking about. Its a deeper meaning behind his lyrics. He aint no puppet either. This song is not trash or wack. Its trash or wack because you can't comprehend the multiple layers of his lyrics. Its trash or wack because you dont like the beat. Its trash or wack because you dont understand what he's talking about. When you look at The Sistine Chapel, do you assume its about God touching a mans hand or do you look at its deeper meaning? You people can see through glass but cant hear through a wall. This man is an incredible artist. Those whos comparing him to Em, Rakim or Nas, don't. Those rappers are lyricist. Kendrick is a storyteller. A painter of the mind. This is NOT about him selling out. This is art. Art is not to be compared to to Lyricism. Art is for the heart. Rap is about the mind. Kendrick is real.
He didn't sell out what happens is kendrick's is bringing some sort business ideas people's go ape crazy knowledgeable enough this ideas have been there from time just opening you third eye employing good people from your hood they hold you down when shit pops to take them to top with you
Noah Vargas He blames himself for not being there when someone he knows got killed. So he's saying its hard to love himself because he blames himself basically. The deeper meaning is that he's being there for his friends but not really there for his family. In all this regret and depression, the devil approaches in this nice tune wanting him to sell his soul. He rose to fame but left his folks in Compton.
This album changed my life music wise. He can present his pain and make you feel it and then apply it to your own pain. Thats a powerful skill right there. That intro where he basically hates himself ?! Lord have mercy!
fo' sho'! it's been my favorite Kendrick song ever since i heard it's release. The intro is still kind of uncomfortable to listen to but it's made that way purposefully to set the 'being comfortable with being uncomfortable' tone (I'll stop there, now)
The 1st half of this had me in tears, aside from thinking of myself, but thinking of my own sister as well as half brother...the 2nd half, in my mind, ironically was telling the truth in ways...I will always respect Kendrick for how real he is in his music
JKO - the thing is tho, tpab was an instant classic, DAMN is a classic too, but the overall sound that Kendrick hit y'all with on tpab was just unexpected, bro I get chills thinking of the first time I ever heard that shit man
Big Mack I do like the sound of tpab a lot better than DAMN tbh. And I still get chills during the instrumental breaks scattered across tpab. Damn lyrics hit me a bit harder than tpab. DamienVoid44 Depression can be a really complicated mind set. Alot of ppl that are functional within depression self medicate to get through it; all the while speaking the trues of where they are to themselves.
DamienVoid44 I wouldn't call it just a 'mindset'. It's more complicated, it begins to become part of you. Sometimes you want to feel depression because for some twisted reason, you miss it. It becomes familiar. It's the same reason why alot of people who go to drug rehab and are sucessfully treated will eventually go back to a life of drugs; because the brain longs familiarity and so it decides that rather than taking a step forward it'd be much easier to take a step backwards. Mindsets are much easier to control.
Coming back to this Song because I lost a a best friend to gun violence shortly before this album came out. I regretted not taking more time with him that I had. U is my favorite song on the album, but one of the hardest for me to get through till this day.
“u” is so fucking dark. It takes a special kind of rapper to talk about the guilt he carries about his sister who got pregnant and the friend he left behind in Compton to die.
This video ends with Kendrick taking a walk and DAMN. begins with So I was taking a walk the other day. So after the events of Lucy (Lucifer) comes DAMN. where he talks about being cursed and his actions to come back to God! Genius KDot
I thought that maybe lucy/lucifer represents the rap industry which brought him money and fame and the greed to leave his fsmily behind in compton. Maybe thats what lucy offers him but at the same time would take his soul
my definition of a lyricist. oh never had a problem with alcohol, nor have I had any serious suicidal thoughts, but he makes me FEEL whatever hes going through. my generations GOAT
When all y’all thought this was a symbolic song... when he was really pouring out his pain for real after realizing how much he felt about things WE don’t have a clue about in his life..#listen he talking himself.. if you never been there you wouldn’t latch onto the pain .. feel for that matter.
This song is about not two people but one man hating on himself in a drunken depression for doing some bad decisions in his life. He is yelling at himself in a hotel room as you can tell by the "house cleaning" and this song is about regret. Pay attention to the lyrics not the jazzy beat and this song is far more depressing.
I feel like if english classes made people study on kendrick lamar or someone that is relatable to our contemporary generation, people would be motivated to do their work more.
I did a reading response in english class on this album back in 2016 and learnt so much more compared to the normal shit we were taught because its much more relatable to a kid from the hood
Kendrick Lamar isn’t just talented in terms of lyrics, but his acting is top notch👌🏾 the way he can change his voice and the way he moves like that isn’t easy
It’s not even acting anymore, he’s talking about what really happened. His friends, some family, were shot and killed. he was starting up his career, and he left for other reasons, one of his close family was shot, and he couldn’t get there. He thought he would survive, but after multiple surgeries, he died from internal bleeding. he felt extreme guilt on his life and he felt he was responsible for the death. that isn’t even remotely acting, that’s words straight from the heart.
The meaning behind this song is everything. It’s like a back and forth convo with God. He’s right. God is Gangsta. His passion is so admirable. People don’t rap like this. I love seeing raw real emotion in a robotic world. Kendrick is my favorite rapper. Always will be. He puts his soul into his music. His all into his music. I love to witness it 🥂
If Kendrick Lamar dies it's because he taught and spoke the truth. There is a possibility that he could lose fans because of who he really is. All his music is for everyone to understand and if you don't you're either not a fan or a lost soul. TPAB is a masterpiece.
Right? And like he said in Mortal Man, "When shit hots the fan, is you still a fan?" The media is gonna try to break him and everything he stands for and we have to stick by him through it all.
this is that exactly what's so amazing about it, I'm not even remotly religious but that album helped me through and essentially helped me out of my depression. all the themes about Lucifer and God are metaphors for his depression and lack of self confidence and his eventual breakthrough... i love my self.
+Josh Knight no. These arent 100% metaphors. God is real. How are are these metaphors any how? im hearing the lyrics and its point blank giving a story. and a person of his stature has earned and offered a position of power and influence, to face and learn things the average citizan wouldnt "believe" or understand, Like God and the devil do in fact exsist. he learned, that in fact when you reach that pedistal, you have a choice of selling yourself and acheive everything you and your family would ever want. soooo..they find Lucifer to be a real diety. Hopsin once said in a interview, before he wasnt religious didnt really believe in God. when he reached that bar, he was offered the same thing, realized what shit is really about and didnt take. he said he learned that God was real when he found out the devil is real. said if this guy is real, the devil is real, then God has to be real also. these people who have the power of us through song and vision are let in on little secrets on WHY things are done and how. No, not every celeb knows, not all public figures know, but the people who reach a certain point... they know. God is real. and kendrick is dealing with what happens when you become a person of power.
When i was listening to the whole album TPAB, I cried somewhere. It was this song. The screams show how much pain is there in k's life. This video adds more angst to my sorrow throughout this song. May god give 100 years of life to this man 🛐
Easily one of his best pieces of art if not the best, the structure the orchestrated instrumental, the story he tells and his raw emotion, gives me chills every time I listen to this song and album as a whole king Kendrick
Kendrick Lamar's is the Stevie Wonder of Hip Hop meaning his picture of life is so clear its like his ears are his eyes...The depth of this young man expense far deeper then most of us who claim to be conscience...He has really given hope to all who believe Hip Hop is in a coma...
Where did he learn to make music? Who taught him? His music is pure art. Every single word in his lyrics have a deep meaning. Its amazing how genius his work is.
Man, Kendrick Lamar really dives deep. One of many examples: On "u" Kendrick reveals the mind-state of someone who is suicidal and mercilessly attacks the chores of his identity ... he is known for being humble he attacks that he is known for being about unity he attacks that etc. It's like if a tabloid decided to expose Kendrick in an attempt to expose him as a fraud but he does it on himself. Its not the fake generic introspection we hear in many rap songs. The introspection is so deep he is near disowning himself because of the pain regret and shame. He doesn't just slap power love and positivity on it which in any case is a simple conclusion for a very complex problem. And him actually vocalising those internal screams many suicidal people experience because they been holding back for so long is soooooooo well thought and placed. And just like with his other songs the video enriches the experience and provides clues
That’s really him in his feelings and I love it cause they don’t make’em like that no more..pac and kanye was the realest when it came to delivering messenges through videos💯
@@Hooded-Tet if i’m sure i’m right i think this is him talking to the alcohol itself. he knows he shouldn’t be drinking the alcohol and he’s ashamed of it.
no it’s even worse when you hear the other lines “third surgery they couldn’t stop the bleeding” “Then he died, god’ll say you fucking failed, you ain’t try” In my opinion the whole 2:35-3:50 is the best part of the song, it shows the real guilty conscience. How he felt when his people died and he had felt he caused it.
TPAB blows DAMN. out of the water, but DAMN,as good as GKMC was, completely blows it out of the water as well.Frankly,DAMN was a hybrid between all his other albums,he even said it himself.”I could finally take elements from good kid,the meaning behind TPAB,and the rawness of doing whatever I wanted in S.80.That is DAMN.” People underrate DAMN due to it having a level of commercial appeal.Ergo, they are blinded to the message that it portrays.Which is arguably the deepest album Kendrick released to date.Im not gonna break it down due to how long and so much substance and message every song gives you,but I recommend the dissect podcast if you want a full breakdown. The duality of the album is nothing to shy about either,in which is also mentioned in the dissect podcast. In large, here’s my list: 1-TPAB ; 2-DAMN. ; 3-GKMC ; 4-S.80 ; 5-UU ; 6-OD
I've seen this on TDE website and wondered why they didn't release it on Vevo lol I'm so glad it's on here so more people can view it. Kendrick is so inspirational and such a pioneer for hip hop.
"AAAAAHHHHHH" (kendrick SCREAMING in TRAUMA as he sips hard liqor from the bottle which is his vice). This song fking cuts me deep to the point where it makes me bawl my eyes out. From my prospective he's explaining how hes messed-up in general in the first part of the song, and when it cuts to him sobbing he's explaining how he's going through trauma/done right by his family but they don't care about what it's turned him into, and how it damages him. Long story short some have family that lie and deceive us as innocent kids, when we grow up into adults and realize the unresolved traumas/ mental pain it causes, it turns us into monsters. Kendrick is a lyrical genius 💯
This is a video that takes place in his poem. " Resentment that turned into a deep depression Found myself screamin' in the hotel room I didn't wanna self-destruct" When he sings "loving you is complicated" he refers to loving himself as being a difficult task. The song is called "U" in contrast to his single in the album "i" where he breaks free of his depression declaring his love for himself. Note how he is in a hotel room, like he said in the poem, screaming his self-hate to himself. His internal struggle of loving himself being complicated is depicted in the video where he looks at his reflection in the mirror claiming he hates himself and that he is a "failure". Kendrick is indulging in the sin of over intoxication in alcohol, drowning in his sins as he's being consumed by the evils of Lucifer. In the second verse he proceeds to then blame himself for external incidents, for example, his mother leaving and the death of his friend. After his friend was shot he had multiple surgeries before he died and Kendrick didn't visit him in person, he now hates himself and carries that guilt forever. The next scene showcases Kendrick in a lustful environment placed by his friend Lucy (Lucifer). He thoroughly explains his temptations he has been consistently falling for. Lucifer has been giving Kendrick useless materialistic items that had a brief excitement to him ("Filling his pockets" with money). Finishing his last verse, he reveals that Lucifer is essentially the music industry, because he states "Lucy got paperwork" for him and now that he's "all grown up to sign this contract" he will belong to the music industry as a slave forever. In the second half of the music video there are short clips of him underwater cleansing himself of the sin by baptism between the lustful clips displaying Lucy's power over him. As the video concludes, so does the poem. "The evils of Lucy was all around me So I went runnin' for answers" In the last scene, Kendrick is seen to be leaving Lucy in search for answers.
This isn't music......It's complete visual and auditorial art. The transitions so smooth. This only makes me wish that Biggie and Pac were still alive to hear it .
This album is the best of all time, no one can tell me otherwise. The transitions, the jazz themes throughout the songs, and the deep storytelling. This album has it all.
Even setting aside all the lyrics, Kendrick's rapping ability is insane.. at the 2:38 mark or so, his flow and tonality is so hard to replicate. The delivery makes this song so much more haunting.
The sentence "loving you is complicated" just has so much meanings on so much different situations in life and in general. Don't we all feel connected to this sentence at some place?

People complaining about this not being "danceable" are the ones Jay Z was referring to when he said, "Do you even listen to music, or do you just skim through it?"
This song follows the most danceable track on the album, "These Walls." Its purpose is to signify a massive shift in tone.
Perfectly said.
I don't even think it's not even this undanceable, it has a good flow to hear but it's kind of a disrespect at the same time, U is such a good song to hear, and i read it on repeat on Spotify

He didn't sell out what happens is kendrick's is bringing some sort business ideas people's go ape crazy knowledgeable enough this ideas have been there from time just opening you third eye employing good people from your hood they hold you down when shit pops to take them to top with you
Kivon Thompson honestly can you tell me the deeper meaning!! I get what he’s saying for the most part but I want to know what you think it is !!
Kivon Thompson 🖤 For real 👏🏾
Noah Vargas He blames himself for not being there when someone he knows got killed. So he's saying its hard to love himself because he blames himself basically. The deeper meaning is that he's being there for his friends but not really there for his family. In all this regret and depression, the devil approaches in this nice tune wanting him to sell his soul. He rose to fame but left his folks in Compton.
This album changed my life music wise. He can present his pain and make you feel it and then apply it to your own pain. Thats a powerful skill right there. That intro where he basically hates himself ?! Lord have mercy!

Depression is a complicated mindset.
This isn’t depression it’s about

This song is about not two people but one man hating on himself in a drunken depression for doing some bad decisions in his life. @@patrickmcgrade6699 Pretty sure he was crying when he did it, which would explain why its like that

+MIles Hall exactly and I can almost guarantee if we don't they'll do him just like MJ.
this is that exactly what's so amazing about it, I'm not even remotly religious but that album helped me through and essentially helped me out of my depression. all the themes about Lucifer and God are metaphors for his depression and lack of self confidence and his eventual breakthrough... i love my self.
No, not every celeb knows, not all public figures know, but the people who reach a certain point... they know. God is real. and kendrick is dealing with what happens when you become a person of power.

lil wayne influenced him
killatyga stop lol
gianni sevilla Kendrick Said that In a interview
Kendrick and the Roots.... Man, their music. Undeniably beautiful. The versatility throughout their albums....
And just like with his other songs the video enriches the experience and provides clues
how the fuck does he rap like that in the second verse in a studio, to keep up with that emotion for all that time hes a genuis.. mastered RAP!!
yuza tron thats not genius thats skill
It’s because it’s Real Emotion. Not Acting.
Facts he I like how he switched it up
That’s really him in his feelings and I love it cause they don’t make’em like that no more..pac and kanye was the realest when it came to delivering messenges through videos💯
*When he said*
"Little brother you promised you’d watch him before they shot him"
*I felt that*
What does "i can feel your vibe and realize that your ashamed of me, yes i hate you too" mean?
@@Hooded-Tet if i’m sure i’m right i think this is him talking to the alcohol itself. he knows he shouldn’t be drinking the alcohol and he’s ashamed of it.
@@eduardont3628 i think it was when some of his close friends had died also he was a heavy drinker
isnt this an extension of the part on "sing about me"?
no it’s even worse when you hear the other lines “third surgery they couldn’t stop the bleeding”
“Then he died, god’ll say you fucking failed, you ain’t try”
In my opinion the whole 2:35-3:50 is the best part of the song, it shows the real guilty conscience. How he felt when his people died and he had felt he caused it.
This is what separates Kendrick from every other rapper to have come before him. The depth of his art, the beauty behind his music.
You can hear how much he poured his heart into this piece of art. The pain is so clear in his voice

Ngl DAMN was disappointing
Mateo David Gutierrez Gonzalez how come?
I've seen this on TDE website and wondered why they didn't release it on Vevo lol I'm so glad it's on here so more people can view it. Kendrick is so inspirational and such a pioneer for hip hop.
umm well said, couldn't agree more!!!
ive seen it on wshh
bullshit. he aint no pioneer.. hes just real! mofuckas in the 80s was pioneers... you trippin
+SoberGang you right. Wrong choice of words.
but i totally respect, agree, and understand what youre saying
" Resentment that turned into a deep depression
Found myself screamin' in the hotel room
I didn't wanna self-destruct"
When he sings "loving you is complicated" he refers to loving himself as being a difficult task.
"The evils of Lucy was all around me
So I went runnin' for answers"
In the last scene, Kendrick is seen to be leaving Lucy in search for answers.
Aaron Lynch was all tht necessary or did you copy and paste?
This isn't music......It's complete visual and auditorial art. The transitions so smooth.
This only makes me wish that Biggie and Pac were still alive to hear it .
tupac would've loved this man
Malik Billings-el he is the reincarnation
Kendrick is alive because he did what tupac wouldn't do.
Malik Billings-el biggie>>
Malik Billings-el
Hopefully Kendrick doesn't get killed for the same reason that pac did
forreal though.. couldn't even imagine how fire a track with the two would be 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This album is the best of all time, no one can tell me otherwise. The transitions, the jazz themes throughout the songs, and the deep storytelling. This album has it all.
I agree 1000 percent
Fax tpab is 15/10
Even setting aside all the lyrics, Kendrick's rapping ability is insane.. at the 2:38 mark or so, his flow and tonality is so hard to replicate. The delivery makes this song so much more haunting.
I used to think this was a little too strange for me. Smh Kendrick is so incredibly talented. This is a masterpiece.
The sentence "loving you is complicated" just has so much meanings on so much different situations in life and in general. Don't we all feel connected to this sentence at some place?
I'll be real
I dont think he is acting.
This man opened a door most of us keep closed.
He wasn't. They said he turned the lights off in the booth recording this and was really crying.
