    You need to make a friend so someone can drive with you.

    Five years ago, I bought an '03 Ultra from an estate, fully loaded with 36k miles for $6500. It has 65k miles now and has been rock solid, save for a few annoyances. Driver door lock button is loose and sinking into the hole, ash tray won't stay latched, passenger side mirror won't auto adjust on start up (it just wiggles in place). I hesitate to replace the mirror because it works manually and it's the expensive heated one with turn signal display. The most frustrating problem is the heads-up and LED dash display goes on and off at random. It has a mind of its own which I assume is a short or a control module somewhere. Thankfully there is still the analog speed/tach.
    Wife and I are retired now and traveling - the Park Ave is a comfortable and quiet cruiser for a couple old fatties to drive off into the sunset. We've looked at something newer, but so many sedans and SUVs are hard black plastic interior - which compared to the plush interior of the Park Avenue, are neither comfortable nor quiet. So we're keeping it and will spend the $ to have the annoyances fixed. I think we'll be buried in it when the time comes.

      The other part of driving one of these is that image of an old grandparents car works in your favor. I have a friend who drives one and has never gotten pulled over even when he is blatantly speeding and other drivers give him extra room too. Its kinda funny because were younger guys but people expect to see white hair when we pass them lol.
      And honestly your problems are all so small and insignificant I could learn to live with them, especially the mirror. Manually set it where you want it and forget it. Replacing that whole unit will probably cost a good chunk of the actual value of the car for basically a non problem. The heads up display is the only thing that would annoy me and would look into fixing if its a cheap repair.

      @@sergeantbigmac We were pulled over after passing a slow vehicle on the way to the eye doc. Both of us wearing our "granny glaucoma" shades that cover our regular glasses. Cop said I sped during the pass. I pointed out passing a car going 5 under if I can only do the limit, and observing safe following distances, would take 30 seconds and 1/2 mile - while another car is coming at me for 1/2 mile - so 1 mile is needed to pass safely. So there's an implied need to pass quickly for safety sake. He agreed and told us to slow down. With the shades, we probably looked to be agents from MIB. Passing doesn't take long with the turbo.
      In other news, I had $3k in work done to her with the intent of keeping it for the duration. Brakes, shocks, stabilizer bar ... next day, smacked a deer. Had to track down a base Ultra and arrange it to be transported here for parts to fix. So she's got a hood ornament and base grill now. Insurance wanted to total it for lack of genuine Ultra parts to fix it - book value is still $6k. Fixed it myself for $2k. Rides like a dream after the suspension / brake work - we're in it for the long haul now.

    I bought a 1998 Park Avenue last February in the UK with 170k+ miles behind it. Well, it had rust behind the front fenders, and on the bottoms of the doors. So a good friend who earns his living in a paint shop fixed that for me. In fact I had the whole car resprayed. Now I have to fix the passenger side a/c, it blows warm. Found a few videos on youtube that should help me fix that. No issues with the suspension or transmission though. I drive it like a Buick should be driven, my wife and I love the effortless way it takes us from place to place. We rate it at least as comfortable as the Lincoln and 7 series BMW that preceded it. It is plenty quick enough for everyday driving, and surprisingly light on gas too. My 6'4" 250lb son in law is happy to travel long distances in the comfy spacious back seat too.

      Got a 2000 Park Ave with 120k miles on it. It was my grandmas. It's been a pretty good car. I've always been on top of maintenance. I believe I've changed the transmission fluid 3 times now. Tranny is holding up great so far (although, imo, any automatic transmission is technically a ticking timebomb from the moment you start it up).
      Alternator died on it a month or so ago. Replaced that and the battery. Now the MAF sensor is messed up. That's another $130+tax. Fingers crossed this is it for another 120k miles... otherwise, it's gonna get sold.
      Oh, and I have a bad pulley causing the belt to squeal once it warms up. Annoying af.
      I'm a Ford guy, honestly, but I always considered this car to be super reliable until as of lately. I wish she'd have gotten a Crown Vic 20 years ago lol.
      Edit: Actually, I just "feel" like selling it. It's not worth it to sell it, I don't think. I guess I'd be lucky to get $3k out of it, right? Then what? I don't think there's another 2000 year model car with 120k miles on it that I could find for that amount.
      And the most important thing is, I don't want to sell it. It was my grandmas. I definitely never intended on selling it... but these little problems that keep popping up have me worried. Fuel gauge is also messed up. Temperature gauge is stuck behind the peg, too, lol. But, I can see temp/volts/etc. on the on board display. Mostly small issues.. or at least "superficial" like the alternator and MAF sensor. Nothing actually engine/transmission related. Either way, it's been $150-$200 a pop so far on these issues with me doing the labor. It better straighten its ass up lol.

  • @noahbitz2878

    Door handles are always breaking, crank seals leaking, wheel bearings humming, seat linkages breaking, front engine mount bushings ripping, sub frames rotting, speakers blowing, control arm bushings crumbling, the list goes on and on and on... But I still love these cars. They are super practical and easy and super cheap to work on so just keep up on the maintenance and it will keep running forever (unless the floor rusts out where the subframe bolts to it).

      @@c.mcdermo look up how to properly take off the door panels. the front two doors have 5.25in speakers, if they have them the back doors have 3.5inch speakers and the rear deck subwoofers are 6x9inch ones. a month ago i replaced all the stock speakers in my 2003 park ave ultra. if youre will to do the work the door speakers aren't too bad. i can take my door panels off in less than 5 mins now i love it. plastic tools for panel removal go a long way. the after market doors speakers will screw in place just fine but the rear woofers have stupid plastic clips that hold them in place. i pulled mine out to replace the speakers and they sadly were junk after. ended up modifying my rear deck by cutting the plastic grill out of each mouting spot so you could literary see into my trunk from the rear windshield when not mounted. the 6x9 kicker speakers i installed instead of clips i bolted them in and that also let me put the kicker grills on the top side of my rear deck to protect them while also allowing the speakers to be seen from outside the car. honestly should make a video of it. at one point i tested having a ring of leds around them to flash with the bass.

    Actually if they continued to improve upon them and use the drivetrain in more cars, I think would have improved their business - evidence Lexus LS and ES. While I like this car, having a prestine 97 lesabre again and my Lexus, it actually doesn't compare. My back is very bad and was surprised to find 99 ES be more comfortable, mainly bc the lesabre seat is too short and pushes on my shoulder blades. At any rate, I think GM made big mistake, not doing what Toyota did with their 3.0 now 3.5 V6, with the 3.8 V6 that thing could probably also turn 300hp today like the latest 3.5 2gr-fse, with the same reliability in both sporty and comfy cars. The 3.6 and such they make today burns many and they never return for another. I got a Lexus by accident 22 year old with 225k miles and only had to replace radiator and a coil pack - i kid you not, with regular fluid changes of course. *for the life of the car. It did need a new power steering hose before it got wrecked.

      The car is currently around 75k miles on the dash I believe. Maybe 76, cant remember. The dash was swapped for a 03-05 Ultra cluster at some point, but the milage seems accurate according to the carfax/autocheck records over the years. The underside is also totally spotless, so the milage seems more believable than I originally thought when I bought the car. Id say the cars realidtically worth about 4 or 5k as it sits. Id like to paint the car properly so it looks nicely finished. At that point id value it closer to 6 or 7. Im not sure if the blue interior hurts or helps value at this point, everyone that sees it seems to love it lol
      To let go of it id probably be looking for about 8k once I paint the hood nicely. Definitely like the car though, and currently have no plans of getting rid of it. Ill make a video announcement if I do decide to put it up for sale though

The biggest problem I had was brakes all the time rears. I had about every option but the moon roof. The trans was going at 100k miles later it wouldn't pass smog due to the fuel gage that was another 900 and something. I was like whatever so that was fixed and it passed CA smog. I went to start it one morning and had a bad rod knock at 130k miles. I had a offer of 2k. I took it and ran. I remember seeing them at the LA Auto Show on the stands. I had water poor from the vents also that was a clogged drain. The gas gage was the worst and it had to be done before smog and to get CA tags 900 bucks was a few pennies in 2002 and it wasn't paid off yet. I think my payments were almost 400 a month on it. Are you sure this didn’t have keyless entry standard? I ask because I’ve owned nine Park Avenues in 25 years- a 1980, 1984, 1988, 1990, 1991. The latter, I’m almost positive, had standard keyless entry even in 1991. I then had a 1997, 2000, 2002, and 2004. All of these, I’m certain, had standard keyless entry as well. I’m sure I have at least one original window sticker somewhere. It just doesn’t seem logical.

    • @CaptainThirdGen
      @CaptainThirdGen  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep, it was an option. No idea why mine was specced without it given it has every other option.
      Theres diagrams online that will show you, but when you look at your OBD2 port there has to be a pin in one of the specified locations, and if there isnt, that means the car was optioned without keyless entry. mine has no pin
      not having keyless entry is one of my biggest gripes with the car

      @@CaptainThirdGen Hey man. Just an update on the keyless entry thing we discussed a few weeks ago. So as I mentioned, having owned nine Park Avenues in 25 years, I was sure I kept some original window stickers, brochures, or both. One of mine was a 97 Ultra and my factory window sticker says keyless entry is in fact standard. I also have here a brochure for the 1998 models (which I picked up because I bought my 97 as a new, unsold model in January 98)-the 97 I bought was thousands less because of that so I went with it over the 98’s, but I digress. Bottom line-the 1998 Park Avenue brochure I’m looking at now shows keyless entry as standard equipment in both the Park Avenue and the Ultra. I can’t imagine someone doing a very special (bizarre) factory order to delete that equipment on yours. So here’s a theory-from what I see, you have a mostly 90’s Ultra with a lot of interesting mods-you have a trunk lid from 2005, a console from 03-05, a steering wheel from from 97-00, wood trim that was only available 97-99, a 97-02 grille, and gauges from 03-05. It’s intriguing to me that someone took the time to make all of those unusual mods, but is it possible you don’t have the correct OBDII under your dash? If a window sticker and a brochure from that year show keyless entry as standard, then it is. I don’t know if it’s worth your time, but you might even confirm with a dealer. Sort of off topic, but of all my Park Avenues I’ve kept my 2000 ultra, I take it to the dealer twice a year for regular service to keep it showroom new, and it’s amazing how knowledgeable even the young technicians are over such an old car-great resources for information.

    • @CaptainThirdGen
      @CaptainThirdGen  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      good eye, yes my car is kind of a hodge podge of several Park Aves. I will have to look into the keyless entry thing more because it does drive me nuts how my car does not have it. Thanks for the tip Ill have to keep digging.
