My first car. Raced my friends in highschool, set it sideways in snowy parking lots, did burnouts on shit tires, Lost my V-card to the weird girl in class in the front seat. Most underrated car ever built. The 3800 was just quick enough to be fun, always sounded good, got starved of oil all the time due to it being a beater and never complained ever. I still own it even though it’s a farm car now.
Hats off to Buick man. They don’t build all American beef like this anymore

A few (hopefully useful) notes: 1. The coolant elbows mentioned in this video should be replaced with the aftermarket (metal ones). 2. Front subframe bushings tend to go bad and aftermarket replacements seem to last for some five years. The problem with these bushings are causing obvious suspension problems but usually are overlooked and not included in the scope of things to be checked. 3. Rear subframe (front) bushings do go bad and there's no replacement for them. To do the repairs you may want to cut a couple of corresponding size washers from and old tire (worked for me on two cars, but it's on your own risk). 4. Often problem is the leak in the vapor storage system which appears as the gas cap not being closed tightly. If the new can is not available the system can be patched with a 'plumbing' tee. 5. Oil dipstick tube being in front of the engine tends to rust to the holes - consider checking and replacing it. 6. Consider changing tranny/engine mounts - at least on the left and right of the car. The engine is hanging on them so if they go you may be in trouble. 7. If you plan to keep the car consider replacing the brake lines with copper nickel (cunifer) tubing. 8. Replacing rear struts with coilovers is a good idea not because the air struts are expensive - they are not, but the compressor and the height sensor will cost more than the car. 9. Do rustproofing regularly.

With the coolant elbows, replace them with the METAL version, not the plastic. The plastic works for a while, but the metal versions last longer, and won't melt, like the plastic can do, which distort, then begin leaking.

I’m on my 4th Lesabre. These are the absolute best cars I have ever owned, of over 110 previous vehicles. Incredibly reliable, very easy to work on, parts are easy to get. Not to mention the comfort and the exceptional fuel economy in a car this size.
Why am I on my fourth and not still on my first? People wanted to buy them. Fun fact. All 4 of mine have been 2002’s and beige by coincidence. I really want dark red with tan leather.

when you have the upper plastic manifold crack and flood the engine with coolant, make sure to replace the EGR valve chimney in the lower manifold to the updated skinnier one to keep some of the heat away from the plastic to prevent future failure

Have an 04' limited with 200k on the dash. No check engine light, an I drive 40 mile commute every day.
Encountered all of these and then some. Gas gauge doesn't work, window on front passenger side gets crooked when going up, speakers are blown/rotted. (Wish it had a bit more power) Either way I love this car. It's never left me stranded.

On a Buick LeSabre... If you push the 'Cruise Control' button and nothing happens (no amber light on in the on/off button) the easiest and therefore the FIRST thing to check is the #14 fuse in the fuse-box under the hood. If that is not the problem, the SECOND thing is check fuses under the steering column. (Under the steering wheel, about where your left knee is when driving). Remove the plastic cover panel (it just pulls off), then remove the steel plate that is under that panel (just four 10mm screws). There is a small black rectangular plastic box with wires sticking out of it. Open the box and you will find three 2 AMP fuses. Check these for a burn-out. They control the lights/function of the buttons on your steering wheel. AND they are not mentioned in the owners manual. This job takes about 10 minutes to do, and it will save you hours or even days of frustration. (I just fixed my own 2004 Buick Lesabre this way; and also fixed a friends 2001 Lesabre this way; so I'm guessing they all have these 2 amp fuses under the steering column).

kind of surprised that the EVAP purge solenoid didn't pop up. had to swap that out at 110k miles because it was stuck open causing an evap leak code. i even tried getting a new OEM gas cap first because i saw that was a common thing. 35 bucks and 3 minutes and the code went away.

We have a 2005 lesabre. Problems we’ve had with it are the ignition module (which is common on any 3800 engine) . That problem should have been listed. blower motor resistor, and the rear air ride shocks did go bad a few years ago. They were leaking causing the pump to kick on so often
Also another common issue with these Lesabres and any GM vehicle with the 3800 v6 is more often the catalytic converters will lose their efficiency and trip a P0420 code for inefficient catalytic converter

    • @LT1HILLINGHOE

Agreed I've owned many different buicks and absolutely love them the lesabre especially cause that's what I grew up with my grandma had one but I've had a 93 and 94 buick century specials and a93 roadmaster not the lt1 just the tbi and a 93 90th anniversary lesabre custom 96 lesabre limited and a 99 lesabre limited newer vidystyle from 97to 99 and a 2000 lesabre limited and a 2002 century custom and just from experience the old body style lesabre and centrum and park Avenue are much more reliable cars the cars themselves cause they have the same engine but they had the crappier 4t60e and the 97 and up had 4t65e neither are that great but they are ok if taken care of but the 3800 wont die the 3300 wont die and the 3100 is powerful but questionable when it comes to reliability but the old bodys dont fall apart like the newer next gen body styles they called them the had great powertrains but they just fell apart and I'm a huge buick fan just have a soft spot for them and their quirks it's just fun to drive and own them

Going through my 2002 LeSabre service records it looks like the previous owner replaced the driver, front passenger and driver side rear passenger window motors when she owned the car. She also had the intake gasket replaced and the radiator elbow were replaced with metal ones. I replaced the MAF sensor and gas cap since I've owned the car. A very reliable car overall.

Got a 2005 LeSabre Limited with 61k miles. Great driving car, but has some glitches. One weird thing is when it's really cold outside, well below freezing, the exhaust gets loud inside the car. I think the exhaust pipe is coming into contact with the floor pan or something and that transfers both sound and vibrations to the interior of the car. Makes it sound like I don't have a muffler. I'm not sure if it's loud to someone on the street, but very loud inside the car. I took it to the shop, but of course that day the temp was above freezing, so it sounded normal and they couldn't reproduce the problem.

I am needing a second vehicle for commuting back and forth to work and have thought about both new or newer vehicles but for some reason, there have been a ton of lower mile LeSabre for sale in my area. My grandfather had 6th, 7th, and an 8th gen models, he loved them to death! Sometimes two of each generation, one after another because he would trade them the second they hit 100k miles (he drove a lot). I have many fond memories riding in his LeSabres growing up. He would take me out to eat for lunch every two weeks during the winter and to his summer cottage when it was nice out.
In all honesty, I think it would be a TON of fun to own for nostalgic reasons.

Another way to be sure your having the same problem is if the car runs fine for about 30 mins then starts having the hard shift from 1st to 2nd gear, its the Electronic Pressure Control solenoid. another way is is you have the car parked on a flat surface & at normal operating temp, put foot on the brake, move the shift level down from park into drive and if the front of the car bumps/shakes noticibly, its the EPC solenoid.

You forgot fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. It can crack the upper intake manifold when fuel leaks in through the vacuum line and ignites.

Hey 1a Auto great video. Can you give more detail about the pressure control solenoid. I didn't catch what you said entirely do you have to replace it or something. My 2003 Buick LeSabre is giving me the same problem as it shifts hard. I want to try and see if that is the problem because transmission replacement/rebuild is expensive. Thanks

I have a 2005 Buick lesabre , my exhaust pipe smokes very bad sometimes when I drive off from stop sign, sometimes my dashboard lights will dim and bright up again, vibration in steering wheel when going 80+mph and when braking and my headlights stays on while driving in day time, and sometimes a weird noise from under car sounds light air coming out a tire does anyone knows what could be the problem?

Problem Area #5 really should be the HVAC actuator motor. It's pretty hard to find a LeSabre from that generation that isn't having problems with those actuator motors.
Another very weak spot is the forward motor mount from the drivetrain to the cowl underneath the radiator. Those motor mounts blow out in a measley seven or eight years after the car is built. The irregular surface of the city streets cause premature wear and that motor mount will blow out in quick time.
They are reliable cars but I wouldn't buy another because of so many other issues that these cars have. Rust, ring gears, tire wear...

seriously... number one head gaskets. aluminum heads, iron block. temperature differential. these are quite good engines but they blow head gaskets.

I was looking at a used vehicle but I will pass on this Buick. I miss the days of a simple rear-wheel drive vehicle that can be fix with a screwdriver and a book of matches. The supposed reliability is not worth the risk and expense of a big break down for a guy with no longer anything close to being a Mechanic.

You mentioned the blower motor but didn't also mention on the interior the dashboard curls up. I know... I know, that is more aestetics than anything, but try to find a LeSabre from that era that doesn't have curled up dashboard... even the one in your video at the end.

A few years ago I bought a 2000 Buick Century, which is similar to the Lesabre , used that was in mint condition with only 30k on it from a old couple , it ran great with no problems till 56k miles then I had every one of those problems all happen in a short time span of each, first was the leaking intake manifold, next was the hard shifting of the transmission, the radio/CD quit working, the front wheel bearing started making noise along with bad tie rods ,power window controls, , then the lower rocker panels along both sides of the car began to rust out badly , the rest of the car and frame was good ,only the lower part of the body, I was considering fixing the problems but then the brakes lines all rusted and leaked and the car was undriveable , I sold it at a great loss, because the repairs were more than the car was worth, it was the worst car I ever owned from repair expenses and build quality , One thing I did not like about it , the suspension was really soft and would easily bottom out if there was a dip in the road or leaving a parking lot that had a slight drop off near the road , but it had a nice floating type of ride on the highway due to that soft suspension, Overall I really liked the car , nice ride, power, comfort but too much of a money pit

My brother just gave me his. 138k 2000, seems fully loaded. Only problem is an intermittent crank no start but so far it’s been great to me. I tightened down the fuse box and he replaced nearly every fuel line component and it still was mean to him. Fuse box was not loose but another vid said it does need to be tightened down to ground properly.

Eh you would be surprised how cheap those motors are labor cost on them for the most part are pretty cheap and seeing how this motor was used across all GMs car lines that had 6cyl at the time parts are easy to find and widely available which me cost is also cheaper than most other cars of those years
