  • Part of the BBC series "Walking with Dinosaurs".
In the episode "Cruel Sea", we get to know a few marine reptiles of the Jurassic. Among them is Cryptoclidus, appearing less frequently on tape. This video is a collection of all Cryptoclidus moments featured in this episode. The name of the creature means "hidden collarbone" in Ancient Greek, since Cryptoclidus had very small collarbones, fused with the rest of the pectoral girdle.
NOTE: All content(audio and video) belongs to the BBC, I own nothing from this footage.

I like how plesiosaurs are portrayed much like walruses or elephant seals in this show.

Look at the way these plesiosaurs (Cryptoclidus) moving in water, so fluent, so elegant, so beautiful.
I watched Walking with Dinosaurs (1999) for the first time when I was about 6 or 7. Now I'm 30, but everytime I rewatch this (as well as watch these clips) I feel that I'm never getting older. (Happy 30th anniversary, WWD)

They're like seals, which isn't accurate, but it's still cool!

I as well was astonished by that when I was editing the subtitles for the video. After reading your comment, I took a look at some Cryptoclidus fossil images on the internet and found out that the species had some special ribs called "gastralia". These ribs covered the belly instead of the sides, so they really helped to protect the organs while Cryptoclidus was on land.

@@wilddestinations6116 Plus, the movie this was taken from is pretty old, I remember they showed this to us in school I think when I was in the third grade. So that was at least 17 years ago. I don't know when specifically this movie was made but it might not be accurate as far as size and behavior goes. Like I'm not sure it's true that they would crawl on land or rocks like that. Regardless I'll bet there was a prehistoric marine reptile or dinosaur back then that did do something like that.

@@ryangamble6697 When I was young I read in a book that plesiosaurs crawled on land to lay their eggs, so I didn't question the "fact" that they could walk on land until I found your comment. I looked it up on the internet and I found out that now scientists know for sure that plesiosaurs gave birth to live young because they discovered a pregnant plesiosaur fossil. However, this doesn't rule out the possibility that plesiosaurs like Cryptoclidus were able to crawl on land. Thanks for your comment, now I actually know something new!

@@wilddestinations6116 thanks for putting this video on TH-cam and yes I believe it’s still believed that small-medium sized plesiosaurs possibly could crawl onto the beaches like in walking with dinosaurs I wouldn’t doubt that some smaller plesiosaurs like cryptoclidus or some species could lay eggs even though most species of plesiosaurs laid eggs because it was recently discovered that some species of mosasaurs did in fact lay eggs

We are still not sure if Plesiosaurs could crawl themselves on land to rest, it still remains as a mystery.

Quite the opposite actually. All evidence points towards plesiosaurs being entirely aquatic: markwitton-com.blogspot.com/2019/01/plesiosaurs-on-rocks-terrestrial.html No paleontologist in this day and age would endorse a seal-like plesiosaur.
