And they were a top 5 team, expected to make the final four, regular season SEC champs, SEC tourney champs oh and Dickie V - we didnt get Meeks back and they still dominated
John calipari would have won the championship the next year, but West Virginia just happened to get the cats off balance with their zone in the elite 8
If Tubby won 26 or 27 a year, and Gillispie won 20 per year for 2 years, why speak against the change? Off the court Tubby was outstanding and Billy G unfortunately was lacking. It was evident to all. Not up to high expectations either on or off the court. So give his bosses credit for accountability for high standards.
Wrong, wrong, wrong. This should show just how little these three actually knew about the situation, they did no research, just started running their mouths with their own opinions. They should have had discussions with Jay Bilas, Andy Katz and anyone (such as Matt Jones at KSR) who could have brought them up to speed. Gillispie was not the right person for any job such as a UK, UCLA, Kansas, UNC, etc. He didn't have the personality for such a huge spotlight, just look at his rude interviews during games with commentators. Dick V: "Meeks is coming back" - (wrong) - Hubert: "Changing coaches will not make Kentucky an elite team" - Wrong, granted several players came with Cal, still fundamentally wrong - Digger: "with everyone coming back, this team will make the sweet sixteen" - Wrong - without the players that Cal brought in, they probably would not have, and more than likely Patterson may have left as well as Harrelson if Gillispie would have stayed. I like Dick Vitale a little, don't care one way or the other about Hubert, and think that Digger doesn't know anything about modern day basketball (out of touch). Everybody has opinions tho, even me. Just think that if you are on national TV as an "expert", you should at least do some research and earn your pay. Heck, the smart thing would have been to have interviewed someone close to the situation, with all of ESPN's clout, they could have got an interview with virtually anyone in a minute.
In Vitale's defense, Meeks was going to come back at the time of this video, then changed his mind again and went to the draft. He went back and forth for a while.
Barnhart is the highest paid employee at UK; higher than Lee Todd and Billy. Don't believe me??!! Just google search UK salary database. It's about time Mitch step up and respect the program. Maybe Billy was not a good fit. Maybe Mitch is not either.
This is funny looking back. He just said changing coaches wouldn’t make UK a top team. Well, that’s exactly the opposite of what happened. Cal came in and immediately was a top team.
Ol buddy said changing coaches isn't gonna get my back to a top 5 team, the following year they were the #1 team in the country and only lost 2 games. Lol.
Gillespie dug his own grave, his DUIs and bad relationship with booster and fans gave him the boot. If he didn't do that he would of had one more year.
Since Calipari has arrived at UK, they have gone to an Elite Eight, Final Four, and National Title. UNC under that same time has an NIT, Elite Eight, and Elite Eight. UK is also 3-1 head to head vs. UNC since then. That must chap Hubert's ass.
Just looking back on this video. Hubert goes to UNCheat where they committed academic fraud for years and years yet the NCAA does nothing to them. Duke the same way . These 2 doesn't answer to anyone, they do what they want. If this had happened at UK they would've been given the death penalty
@@waynesmith2462 The NCAA has a huge stake in unc and duke basketball is why. They made Duke and Coach K the face of the sport over 30 years ago. They can’t go after their flagship program. Duke and UNC alumni both provide the ncaa with a ton of funding. Jordan Brand and Coke are both huge sponsors and either owned or run by UNC alumni. ESPN was run by a unc alumni for a long time as well though i think he recently stepped down. There was likely a ton of pressure on the ncaa from those guys to look the other way for unc. Nike has a big stake in duke as well. And nike more or less runs college basketball. Basically unc and duke are indeed untouchable. I mean UNC gave tammy hansborough a 6 figure a year job and nike put zions parents up in a million dollar home near durham and neither even really tried to hide it.
Even if cal want coming in Billy had to go!! He was destroying the reputation of the organization. He was dealing with some personal problems that I’m in no way gonna judge him for. Everyone knows what I’m talking about. He had to go!
I bet they are eating their words now. Lol. I don't think the journey was too far for Kentucky. Because they "came back" the next season and have been staying on top. Sport commentators are such a joke, half the time the don't know what they are talking about and the other half they are gloating about "their" team and dissing all the others.
Hubert Davis makes me laugh! If a long time from being a top 5 team was about 6 months, I guess he was right! LOL! An elite 8, final 4 and National Championship later, I wish Hubert would clarify his comments a little better! GO CATS!!!
How does that back up what I said?? 3 Elite 8's and 2 Final Fours in 3 years is a fact. Google it if you don't believe me. I never said anything about winning a national title. I'm not a prophet, I don't forecast the future.
"Kentucky, next year, is not going to win a national chamionship" I bet your opinion has changed slightly. Kentucky just MIGHT win a national championship!!!
Now we want Calipari gone. Please bring back rick Pitino, assistant coach, tubby, are pelphrey, If not Pitino.. Maybe go shawn woods. Travis ford, Walter McCarty, deron Fieldhouse, cal can only recruit, horrible at game time. Ego is his main problem. Wont play zone, even after teams just go in for layups all game.
Calipari had a nice run from 2010-2015. But he’s clearly not the same coach as he was when he first arrived. Kentucky is absolutely loaded this season. If he can’t get a 1 seed and at least a final four out of this team than yeah…i think it’s time. My first call would be billy donovan again. I don’t think he’ll ever come back to college basketball but he’s be the best fit so i’d make him say no. If that happens i go to Scott Drew who i think would probably crawl from waco to lexington for the job but if he were to say no i think then you go to rick pitino as a stop gap. Pitino has enough years of coaching left to at least reset the culture at UK and reestablish it as a program non one and done level players actually want to stick around at instead of just using as a 1 year layover before they head off overseas, or the g league or transfer to another program. And that’s my biggest issue with Calipari and what i think has hurt him more than anything. Until the last 2 seasons he’s struggled to keep players in his program.
Since then Kentucky has an Elite eight, Final Four, Championship, and a Runner-up!! Hubert = FAIL!!!!

10 years later, this shit aged like milk.
If I was one of those players, me and drunky G would've been fist fighting when he started that drunk crap
Hubert Davis getting hired at UNC as an assistant is the most unsurprising thing ever.
