Cal is not a coach, he's a recruiter and that's how it's always been. He gets carried by the talent each year with a winning record, but otherwise meaningless seasons that always come up short. In big time games, where the talent is not enough to overcome the lack of experience, that's where real coaching is needed to guide these kids.

I'm a Kentucky alumnus and fan. There are 3 things we can count on for next basketball season: 1. Cal will be back. 2. Cal will have a great recruiting class. 3. Cal will not be a threat to win the NCAA Championship this time next year. Lather, rinse, repeat.
We are a top seed every year. We always compete but only one team wins. Why are so many old fat non athletic people talking trash?

To win? Actually keep players around but that’s impossible now. Kentucky is just a stepping stone to the NBA.

His problem is that he is a one trick pony that will not make in game adjustments and he has 3 frail 7 footers that aren’t very good inside.
Dudes had 8 NBA all stars the last twelve years and has one chip off the effort of an all time great college player in Anthony Davis. he’s mid at best -a Kentucky native

No one wins with Freshman lol he's the only one who really competes without seniors year in and year out. We frankly just played bad. Reed played horrible why isn't the loss just that.... All year long fans called for reed to play more etc.... Well cal played him more and we lost. We played bad they played great. Hats off. Cal is the best coach in any market he's in. Stop the madness and just look ahead.
I can't believe the terrible coaching job Cal did! What was that? Does Kentucky not run plays on offense? Every time Kentucky forced their way inside, it paid off so why stop? Also, Is there not one single defender at the guard position on this roster?

The best young players do not make a good team unless you are stuck in the past. It didn't appear UK MBB team was prepared for the Oakland zone. Many of the players just looked "shell shocked" and so much for a March team. They need to prepare players to become "seasoned" and experience. Some talent and seasoned experience usually helps make a good team!

YOu have to be preparing for that situation all year. Only a few minutes of each practice playing a zone and against a zone would do it.
Do yall realize how much time this team missed with injuries and keeping Z out half the year. I mean do yall remember the season? Tre fell off. The bigs were all hurt. Thiero out with growing pains. Played the whole season trying to figure out a rotation. They only get 4hrs of practice a week and Cal focused on defense the last half of the season.
Kentucky problems the last 10 years. Horrible coaching. Kentucky can get players anytime. But getting a good coach is what makes it a success. Cal a great recruiter but his time has passed him. We need a coach that cares about winning. Cal said he wasn’t worried about the sec tournament. He not worried about the big dance either. Cause cal been one and done in that to the last 10 years
@pmontyjaaaymes488 They are allowed 20 hours per week (6 days) coach involved with 3 of those hours allocated to games. The maximum per day is four hours. They is no limit on practicing on their own.
I’m not defending Cal anymore but the narrative that he didn’t try to bring portal players in is absurd. Hunter Dickinson and Keyshawn Johnson were at the top of his offseason priorities and would have made this team even more dangerous in this tournament. They just weren’t prepared for Oakland and the freshman choked

Cal needs to be stricter with the expectations of the players……having said that tho, he needs to make in game adjustments when something isn’t working. Zero adjustments at halftime were made, and he held all the timeouts the entire 2nd half. Zero excuse for that. This team was a Jekyll and Hyde. They could beat anyone and get beaten by anyone. Doesn’t matter if the offense can put up 100 per game because the defense can give up 110.
Stop relying on one and done’s and start building a team that grows

Needs to be a balance. Few star freshman with an experienced, physical core. Upperclassmen, portal and top talent in a good nearly even mix
Like Jay Bilas stated, they did that already in 2021....They had a great mixed and balanced roster yet they still got put out early by St. Peters.

They dont have a program. They just want to recruit all top ranked players and let them play their way to increase their draft stocks

Mark Stoops would never allow that kind of money to be thrown around at a football school.🤣😂🤣 But yeah, Calipari was never a good in-game coach, but he hasn't been able to recruit over that for some time.
There are a lot of UK fans that are worried about who to get to replace Cal, like he is the only coach for this job. Look at his record! There a heck of a lot of coaches out there doing every bit as good and even better than he is with a whole lot less. I read where Cal has had 345 five star players and has 1 Title to show for it. He has the second worst record as a UK coach. He is getting beat by teams that don't have anywhere near the talent he has. I think you could find at least 50 coaches right now that can do every bit as good as he is doing because they are doing it now.
All the freshmen need to come back and taste the glory of national championship 🏆

On offense, they ran 1 play the whole game that I counted. The rest was just run down pass it back and forth 2 or 3 times, then iso. Defense was horrible as it has been all year. Cal can't coach, Cal can recruit, and that's the problem. Anthony Davis isn't comin thru those doors.

it’s day 2 and the two clowns Mitch & Cal still have a job. spoke to multiple after the game and said they’re willing to sell their season tickets until either one of them are gone. the players aren’t the problem; stop saying it’s the young age of players because the gameplan was garbage. coach k didn’t lose first round of the NCAA nor first round of the ACC nor 3 straight home losses at Cameron Indoor with one and done. that’s what Cal has done this year: all of that.
and quit with the “we can’t afford to fire Cal” did you know Jay? we are in the SEC, the most money grossing conference in college sports, an ORIGINAL SEC team at that. they paid him the money knowing 5 years later they can afford it. get rid of him.

I've been watching espn it's birth. In all those years I've never seen a native American host. I don't mean to be rude, but it'd be nice to include people who native to our country
I'm an old white dude from south dakota with a heavy native population all over state so I'm well aware of their plight and struggles. It is a shame they are the one minority that gets no recognition or vocal support from anyone really other than an NFL team having to drop the name redskin.
What are the numbers for the native population that watches sports and or plays in the pros?

If that person is one of the best at that job then awesome. Give them the job. Team was mostly upperclassmen not to mention the national player of the year Oscar Tshiebwe for two straight seasons from 2021-2023. He's already tried the new model and failed just as miserably. He doesn't have the discipline to study and teach basketball. I guarantee he has never rewatched the St Peter's game. Matthew 5:26

It’s also why duke hasn’t won in years. It’s become rare for freshman led teams to win it all. You need that mixture of talented experienced players. Duke doesn’t win the natty without Quinn Cook and Anthony Davis was an anomaly
What a stupid question. What do they need to change? Come on. It's clear as day. One-and-Done University needs experience in these tournies, not a roster full of Freshman and I bet players like Dillingham and Sheppard were thinking of the upcoming NBA Draft and their NBA careers. They couldn't care less about their college tournament results. Keep recruiting these guys and you're gonna get the same results.

Too many one and dones! Cal gets the top freshman but they are always young! The top teams lately have been older players! You need 2-3 one and dones! 2-3 guys from the portal. 2-3 sophomores and 2-3 juniors and 2-3 seniors! Tenn and Auburn does well with an even spread of talent and age classes! The portal is so important nowadays! Game is changing! Tournament play is tough because everyone gets their A game!
They did have 2 fifth year seniors on this team. Being young is just an excuse he uses to try to hide his coaching ineptitude. Does less with more than anyone in ncaa history.

Kentucky could have had an older team in addition to its two 5th year players, two sophomores, and 21 year old freshman with two years of playing in a professional league under his belt in their rotation. Bryce Hopkins, Keion Brooks, Shavir Wheeler, and CJ Fredrick all played college basketball this year. It is not just about NBA guys leaving. It is the fact that he either actively runs off the recruits who don't click right away or passively makes them aware of the recruiting class to steer them in that direction is why they are young. Duke recruits one-and-dones too, but didn't run off Jeremy Roach. Michigan State didn't clear out their returnees because Xavier Booker committed.

Part of the problem is that John Capmari literally cosigned on players who leave after one year and that has completely hurt the program. He can't keep five star recruits on the team long enough for them to matter. Not to mention it seems like the team when it comes to tournament time just isn't ready to play. They look laxidasy I think it's time for John to move on go to another program
He cosigned on them leaving prior to the NIL bc he knew many of them were supporting their families or had one shot to make money. I doubt he had the same stance now
The policy of showing recruits who don't hit right away (Keion Brooks, Bryce Hopkins, CJ Fredrick, Sahvir Wheeler, etc) the door so he can bring in a bigger class is also a problem. They aren't only young because of the guys who leave for the NBA. Coaches like to blame the players for hitting the portal, but it goes both ways. They steer just as many in that direction.

I still believe in Cal he just needs to change his style the one and done era is over these kids can get paid from the NIL deals now quit worrying about putting kids into the NBA. And I truly believe whatever coach comes in next won't do as good as Cal over a 15 year span like Cal. They might be able to do better than Cal over the past 4-5 years but not over a 15 year span like Cal. Cal is a top 3-5 coach in America right now idk who we would get that would be better. That's the problem with most UK fans they think it's as easy as going outside and picking up a rock lol! And besides this has been happening to everyone not just UK. Purdue lost to a 16 seed last year and North Carolina didn't was ranked number 1 to start the season last year and didn't even make the NCAA tournament. I say give Cal at least another year or 2 to see what happens even if he under achieves UK isn't going to be terrible we are still going to be one of the better teams in the nation. Let's just take our time and make sure we get it right because I don't think there's any coach out there right now that can do a better job over a 15 year span like Cal did. They might do ok for a few years but I don't think a new coach will be as good over a long term span what are we going to do just keep firing and hiring coach after coach until we scare them all off because our fans have crazy expectations. I agree that Kentucky should never lose in the first round but give Cal another year and see what he can do he has proven himself he's a hall of fame coach
I hate Kentucky, and I remember his first couple of years there, and all the McDonald's players he was getting. I wondered how they would ever lose. Some how Cal figured it out.

It's not the one and done rule nor a player that is to old/young. It's the coaching that's why Kentucky gets getting bounced out early year after year. Calipari is obsolete the game has passed him by. Time for Kentucky to move on from Calipari.

I like John cal I am Vanderbilt fan but I support everything cal has done for Kentucky a loss to Oakland may be difficult but u know what he will get the team back to where they belong, he is a amazing coach, u Kentucky fans are amazing fan base Ikn it’s hard that u guys lost to Kentucky but give him another chance, look at Vanderbilt they stink I can say that because I am a fan, they had a horrible record this season but look at Kentucky they made it to the ncaa and Vanderbilt can’t, I give u guys tons of credit on being in the tournament and he will get the program back to how it was u guys might disagree with me but that’s ok that’s my opinion

What needs to change are these "Big conferences" get too much love.
There's 32 conference's, the regular season winner, and conference tournament winner should get in.
If you win the regular season, and conference tournament, you get a first round bye, and opens up a play-in opportunity for another school in your conference.
We either get a better competition, or guys will go to different schools, for a better chance at March Madness.

The issue is coaching and in game adjustments. Cals guys were getting beat routinely on straight line drives and sometimes it feels like they never watched tape on their opponents. If he has swallowed his ego and mixed and matched some zone prior to season starting and during the early part of the season, it could have alleviated some of the concerns.

Kentucky was overrated. The only decent win they had was against North Carolina. The SEC was not a good gauge of how strong Kentucky was. Look at how the SEC has flamed out in the NCAA! When you score against weak competition, that makes you look better than you are.

Build a program without a yearly crop of diaper dandies. Recruit prospects who can develop into good college players. Quit being a yearly feeder for the NBA and G League. Star ratings of recruits are meaningless. And oh... get a coach who teaches the game and fundamentals.
