Here’s a little fact about vultures on the African plains (specifically in the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, where Wild Savanna takes place): there’s a certain hierarchy between the several species. Lappet-faced vultures are the largest and strongest vultures and they often eat first. They’re the only vultures whose beak can penetrate the thick hide of herbivores. Once the lappet-faced vultures have their fill, smaller yet feistier species like the Ruppell’s griffon, white-headed, and white-backed vultures swoop in. They eat the meatiest parts of a carcass and are often seen dog-piled on a carcass. They will submit to lappet-faced vultures. Last on the list are the hooded vultures. The smallest species that tends to feed on scraps left behind by the larger vultures.
