- There was a time around 2004-05 when Eddie Van Halen wasn't speaking to anyone in the media. Somehow we got the phone number to Eddie's 5150 Studios, and we'd call him early in the morning. Since it was 5 a.m. here, it was 3 a.m. there and Eddie was still up. After warming up to us, he actually started talking to us. Imagine that, EVH talking to us!! These recordings have become known to us as "The Eddie Van Halen Tapes." Word got around in the old Van Halen chat rooms about the phone calls. And like I said, Eddie wasn't talking to ANYONE. He had become a little bit of a recluse and we didn't realize at the time how special these conversations were.
EVH was always such an intriguing person that became an idol of mine. For so many years, before the internet and TH-cam, you never got any insight or personal conversation from him. He rarely did interviews or talk about himself. Now we're finally getting all of it. Just a nice, humble guy who became an inspiration for so many.
Love him. Ate breakfast with them in 1980 Pensacola FL, we were on vacation and they had played the night before. He was charming, his eyes glistened and his impish smile was overwhelming. He ordered Western Omelet. RIL 💚
The love that Eddie had for his Son was amazing.....He was blessed all the way around...He may have had some wild times but you can tell his Son was everything...
Every Father should love his children this deeply (and not be afraid to show that love either)...Far too many men these days just "Shoot & Scoot" when the chips are down....And particularly in the "black community"(surely an oxymoron)....Any fool can be a Father;but it takes a Real Man to be a Dad.
A big big thank you to Dwyer and-Michaels for this beautiful moment with Edward .
Man he was the coolest dude ever and funny
Eddie, was one of a kind !!!!!
Love him. He sounds unwell, kinda sad. RIP goat
This never gets old, Eddie was a top notch guy humble and heartwarming. Miss him RIP Eddie Van Halen
Wow, he sure loved his son. So nice to hear. RIP EVH💜
Wow , the kind of guy that avoids the fan crowd ... but if you met him one on one in a grocery store, probably one of the most personable guys you'd ever want to meet .. thanks for that guys ... TONS
You should check out our conversation with Craid Gass from today. He lived in Eddie's 5150 Studios for a while.
I did meet him and he was all that and more.
This is the funniest and best thing I've ever heard. He was such a cool guy so open and friendly. Took him ages to ask who they even were ! He sounds just happy to talk to guys about music. I love it. Ok Eddie thanks for talking with us ...
Yeah and then Wolfie and I got jamming the other day...
Brilliant.
I could listen to this stuff all night very entertaining
In any interview that I listen to, featuring EVH, I am always impressed by how he is so much a philosopher! He speaks so philosophically and his words draw pictures in my brain. You could tell that he was deeply, profoundly intellectual. He could wrap his mind around musical and rhythmic concepts with ease, as if solving mathematical equations. Rest In Peace, to a musical anomaly, named Edward Van Halen
Awesome! I’ve always wanted to hear a sensible celebrity say “Yes. It’s true there’s a rumor.”, and it’s great for me that Eddie is the first one I’ve heard say it.
This tape is a Godsend. What a great guy Ed is...talking to these awesome guys.
Absolutely great. Man, what a cool guy and great Dad.
Sooooo cool! EVH, my guitar HERO and he's the GREATEST guitar player of my generation...
Will we ever get to hear the EVH vault, it would be like the second coming.
Wolfgang said eventually he would but not any time soon he wants to focus on his own stuff first but man I can't wait
Just a regular guy with a beautiful humbleness about him. God Bless you Edward.
What a cool dude.
"Every day is a vacation"
a day in the life of Edward Van Halen.
You know , this is pretty fucking cool shit here boys! Dig it ! This is super super RARE Stuff and I thank you for this wonderful stuff !!
He was ALWAYS looking forward. I can't remember who told the story, someone in his circle brought up he had a couple of different versions of a Kramer neck on his Frankenstrat. He was incredulous saying it had only ever had strat style necks. The. It was pointed out to him, "Eddie, dude, it had a Kramer neck in the Jump video." EVH was never nostalgic. It was always about what was to come. Which i think has also hurt legacy aspects of the band. I wish there was top shelf footage of the band in the 78-79 period.
The sad demise of EVH ,recorded for all to hear.
Who of thought I could of just called Eddie and chatted? I"m gonna call Alex and see if he answers. Love those guys. God speed Ed!
wow--- remember that..... great job D&W.... RIP EDDIE !!!!!!!!!!!
I swear I've heard this interview and it was a LOT longer!! With Eddie talking about his cancer and how he "discovered" a cure but couldn't talk about it....all kinds of weird shit...but it's mysteriously gone here...am I imagining this?
Does anyone realize that Eddie didn't even know these F'ing guys and actually spoke with them?
What a cool, beautiful, humble and down to Earth Man. God Bless you Eddie in Heaven.
Lol after 30'min convo Ed: " so what are your guys' names anyway?" 😂
I know that was hilarious ! He was so casual and cool.
Man, this was very cool! Such a rare interview. Thanks for being brave and persistent! Smoking Loon!
Great recordings, so cool 😎
I've always loved these tapes. I think it's so great that you called his studio in the middle of the night and exactly the sound you'd expect greeted you: loud guitar music and Eddie having to yell over it to say hello, haha. I think there's more than this though? Looking forward to more if you've got it!
dude...honestly. Ed was cool as fuck to these guys.....most "celebs" would have been total assholes...this was very fun. I heard this last year but fun to hear again! Thank you for the upload!
I lived near Walnut Creek when this happened and remember where this show was. Sammy was playing a local benefit. @3:03
Eddie has such strong fingers that his strumming is loud. His sense of rhythm and timing is top notch.
R.I.P. Eddie! He really loves his son Wolfgang! 🦀mammothWVH🦀 Eddie knew he was going to be a success back when Wolfie was 10!! Amazing!
✌😎
Edward called me we talked all night almost every night after his 2004 tour until he met Janie. Edward and I rekindled our relationship from when we met 1979 and dated until he lost me and met Valarie. Writing my memoirs #WTFCmon
Question did Eddie Love Valerie?? Janie comes off hard core and manly. I think Valerie was to classy fro Eddie. After you read her books she truly loved him. She was over the drugs and booze.
EDD was so lonely that poor man suffers for 20 years God bless his soul in the kingdom of heaven.
EVH is as real as it gets. Any other musician would have been going off about calling them at home. EVH talks with anyone about anything. He's just one of the guys. . R.I.P MR VAN HALEN. . You're so deeply loved and respected. Most of all, deeply missed.
He's a huge piece of shit and disrespected and lied about his bandmates.
The snippet of that new song that he played actually sounded like it could be really good!
Damn I miss this man 🤟
Miss u Ed, and i didnt even meet you
He sounds like a down-to-earth guy
Holy fck that scared the living crap out of me 2:19
💔🎸❤️ Forever
We need the unreleased music
He was a really nice guy.
He was wasted. And Andrew Bennett was living with him then.
Andrew said he never thought Eddie would move on from Valerie.
Eddie realized he let the good one go ...Valerie
Wolfie is one who got him to stop the cigarettes, drugs and alcohol
And he must of been pretty unwell at this stage
"I play very loud."
- EVH
This is funny. But also troubling because he sounded drunk.
Sad to hear the michael ,2 years, acknowledgement
Good interviewers - are they still around?
I get a little sad when I hear the 2000 to 2005 Eddie
Why he was absolutely hilarious?
@@willissudweeks1050 Trent - I know - he was always a fantastic interview throughout his career - I was referring to his health problems, substance abuse issues, and such that seemed to have peaked during that time frame
@@joewilliams3919 I always feel exactly the same way, Joe, and for the same reason you mentioned. It's unbelievable that he lived another 15-20 years.
At least he got it together before the end. The interview he did for the Smithsonian was a special one where you could see he was his real sober self. You could see he had the light back.
@@timnolan4587 you sure could - seemed like by 07 the dark years were behind him forever
Then came that last tour in 15 and he played like he hadn’t lost a step since 78!
I really do miss him as much as you probably can for someone you never met - as I “ease” into the 50s I can say he’s as close to a hero as anyone I can think of - somehow much more than just a great guitar player in a great band
Were the years mentioned in the above Description "2004 to 2005" Ed`s most "reclusive" years also the years he was in the very deepest depths of Alcoholism? Anyone know?
Wasn’t this at a time when Eddie was really “tweaked”?
He was "tweaked" for 35 years.......he didnt do meth if thats what your implying. Blow/vodka/wine
He tells them to f off and Ed still chats with them.
Totally Awesome Eddie was the best period
I heard about my own reunion. :)
I think even the best of the best get pissed off being haslted, when you're trying to work
"I called Warner Bros. And asked for our catalog, a box......a box with each of our records." - - dude didn't even own a copy of own records!!!!!!!!
Dwyer, did you ever talk to him again?
I'd have asked for the cow.
Why are radio DJs always such tools?
Ed sounds burnt out and tired
AANND! lol.
EVH meant so much in my life, but jesus he sounds like a mess on this interview.
Put em in backwards or upside down, freak people out
I forget who wrote the book, maybe Van Halens first manager and I'm paraphrasing but he said somthing to the extent Eddie was the village idiot who played guitar. I can really say I don't hear this here. But as Eddie said, "2 qualudes and a bottle of Jack and see where insperation strikes" may come into play with the previous statement.
what year is it?
2004
Judging from his condition at this time I'm not sure much of that music he's talking about is any good. None of it found it's way onto adkot that's all stuff from the 70s.
Demon
What year was this???
2004 and 2005. We talked to him several times and started a really cool friendship with him.
This was so precious . What a tremendous loss. May you rest peacefully guitar God. There will never be another you. You're so missed. 💔
The unwieldy noise ethnopharmacologically reduce because seat rhetorically promise regarding a lacking bassoon. recondite, guiltless vacation
Whaaaa????
I Thought the same thing
