Watching this at 5.00am in the morning on my 75"TV is almost as mesmerising as being there which I had the privilege of doing back in 1985 on a modelling assignment, where I spent an entire Saturday evening watching super 8 footage of someone's videos of the volcanoes of Iceland. Incredible footage! I just had to make my room completely dark, turn up the volume on my headset and listen to the crackling of the glassy lava and the deep blowing of the wind. And of course thank you for throwing a snowball at the lava stream! I think most of us had the urge to see that happen! :D

This has got to be my favourite Grapevine newscast - and that says a whooole lot! I stumbled upon The Reykjavik Grapevine while researching before going to Iceland for a fly over of the Holuhraun/Bardarbunga eruption 2014, and have followed you guys ever since. The enthusiasm, humour and warm spirit always speaks to me, and having you right there for the glorious events that this eruption has (in store...) for us, I am very grateful for, so: Thank You
Dear Lord - Valur and Polly have opened a gateway to the Underworld. BTW - from a geologist - that was a really nice explanation of why this volcano is different.
The technical explanation for why this is an odd eruption is that the magma is very 'primitive'. Which means that it has only just separated from the solid Mantle rather than hanging around in a magma chamber somewhere in the Crust. The magma is very rich in olivine and is close in composition to a rock called picrite. It is also *really* hot - about 1200C. As it rises through the Crust, it is passing through rocks with lower melting points which means the magma is eroding the channels, so more magma can come up. As more magma rises, it reduces pressure on the hot, solid Mantle. Lowering pressure but keeping the temperature the same, means that some of the Mantle melts, producing more magma, which rises up, reducing pressure, more melting... So this eruption could go on for a very long time. Perhaps even long enough for us to get out of lockdown!
When basaltic lava cools, it forms a crust of black glass. The crackling sound is the sound of the glass crust breaking, as the lava slowly moves forward.
I am quite content to stay home and watch your excellent coverage of the volcanoes on TH-cam! I think we get the best views from here! Thank you so much.

I was there last night and flew in from the Tennessee to see the eruption. I saw your team filming the segment when you were standing in front of small spatter cone between the two big vents. Fabulous work with really interesting narration. All of the footage was great but that drone footage was unbelievable and the eruption was beyond description! I am headed to the store to buy a Grapevine volcano mug and some other cool stuff. Cheers!
@@epincion I have been fully vaccinated for Covid and had a negative Covid test on arrival at the airport. The new rule which took effect on April 6 asks you to quarantine while waiting for completion your arrival test which takes around 6-8 hours to return. If you are vaccinated and have a negative test, there is no further requirement to quarantine. I need another negative test to return to the U.S.

I was there last night and flew in from the Tennessee to see the eruption. I saw your team filming the segment when you were standing in front of small spatter cone between the two big vents. Fabulous work with really interesting narration. All of the footage was great but that drone footage was unbelievable and the eruption was beyond description! I am headed to the store to buy a Grapevine volcano mug and some other cool stuff. Cheers!

Did you quarantine in Iceland?
@@epincion I have been fully vaccinated for Covid and had a negative Covid test on arrival at the airport. The new rule which took effect on April 6 asks you to quarantine while waiting for completion your arrival test which takes around 6-8 hours to return. If you are vaccinated and have a negative test, there is no further requirement to quarantine. I need another negative test to return to the U.S.
