I was shocked that the Secretary of State would speak in such a condescending tone to the Speaker and to the Members of Parliament in general... I wonder what she thought would happen...
I am sure that that's how the government thinks about Parliament, and talks about it when nobody is around. As a body with no real power that is to be manipulated after it has put them into power. Of course since Parliament technically has the upper hand, this only works so long as they don't get too transparent about it, which is where her mistake lay: openly show the disdain that her in-group, the government, which she is probably struggling to be accepted by, feel for Parliament. I don't think it's an accident that this happened to a woman, and that it happened to a woman who is probably experiencing racism within the government. Unlike the typical white male government minister, she has to fight on two fronts.
Sadly, I don’t think this will actually make any change in her, nor other Tory ministers when introducing more changes/rules/laws going forward. They will continue to do exactly what they want, how they want and when they want - and just take anything the Speaker may say as a minor irritant to be ignored.

@@slaterslater5944 The problem is that most of the House rules don't have a specific enforceable penalty, and when they do the Speaker rarely has the power to enforce them. It feels to me like a trained thing as so many Tories display similar patterns of behaviour. The people doing the training are as nasty and destructive as the likes of Badenoch, etc. What an awful self-serving culture.
In my life especially in business the worst most arrogant people I ever met were always the ones who were least able in their roles. I once had a young raw bank manager (yes his title was manager although he was barely in his early 20's) who told me he knew more about my business than I did. My partner and I stood gobsmacked then without a word turned and started to walk to the door. He asked us really arrogantly where we thought we were going, if we wanted a banking facility we had better sit down, at which point we both laughed then left the room. We went to a different bank and later found out this young arrogant man had been sacked. I do hope the Tories get the same treatment.
What an outrageous contemptible and contemptuous comment from Badenoch. "I'm sorry our sequencing was not to your satisfaction." It's really very difficult to have a functioning democracy when people like Badenoch do not respect the structures and processes when it doesn't suit them. They bleat about monarchy and UK laws and sovereignty, but treat parliament with utter contempt.
Lyndsay's a great character. I watch Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) every Wednesday at 12.00 noon. And Lyndsay controls the whole shebang with great authority. An absolute asset to Westminster!!!
Never seen this before. He never called Boris Johnson to account but rather enabled him to avoid giving answers at PMQ so that it became PM not answering questions. He even threw an SNP MP out for correctly calling Johnson out as a liar.
Where do the Tories find these people ? She's in total contempt of the House of Commons, and furthermore the Government have no mandate to replace important legislation on employee rights , health / safety and environmental laws, at the whim of ministers and officials. These are the lashing out death throws of a moribund moraly bankrupt Government. Hoyle was weak as usual. Eleanor Liang would do a much better job as Speaker - a Tory to keep the Tories in check, like the Commons standards committee on Alexander Johnson
I'm horrified that over 2,000 EU laws are being cancelled by the end of 2023 - bc this incompetent gov't cannot have meticulously reviewed and decided on what is best for the British public. The Tory's last 12 months in gov't will be governed by knee-jerk reactions and desperate measures.
Sam de Goeij All EU Laws Cease to Apply or Exist once leaving State leaves EU Membership. there is a proviso Leaving States can continue to use Laws it wants to , until revoked or adopted . as written in Lisbon Treaty Article 50 TEU.

Maybe government ministers including the PM will be cautioned by the speaker when the do NOT answer MPs questions. Democracy is under threat we have to be very careful.
No we don't need to be very careful becaue WE have no say over any of it. The time for being careful has long gone, and we blew up. We (not including me) voted for the Tories to "take back control" so that's what they're now doing - taking back control for themselves and the bosses of companies who donate to their party, whilst taking control away from the public by removing their right to protest, take strike action, and who knows what else. I guess we will all find out soon enough what basic rights we have all lost.
While this is impressive by Hoyle he's been speaker while thousands of clearly transparent lies have been told and I can't recall him challenging any. Maybe doing so would have been protecting the integrity of parliament?
@@kumoryuuichi I was even paying attention, yes. And as far as I know, that is the first and only time he has ever mentioned it to the PM - after countless PMQs. The speaker does not "insist", as I wrote. He lets the PM say whatever he wants when he is asked questions, over and over again.
This is why the general population feel that they can say and do anything they like at any time, when they see our government leaders ignoring traditional rules and behaviours.
@@judewarner1536 so the government isn't demonising protesters and people on strike? Or attempting in any way to make these things harder? I don't think it's a delusional comment, rather something of concern we should all be paying close attention too. Of course, if you disagree you can always protest😊
@Dan G There are ALWAYS Tories speaking out against protesters and strikers, I've made a particular study of Conservative attempts to hold back progressive legislation from the 1807 Abolition of the Slave Trade to the 1999 National Minimum Wage. The point here is that ultimately, they have ALWAYS failed to stem the tide of progress. If they couldn't do it in the Victorian Era, they certainly won't succeed in the 21st century. The 200+ history of weakening Conservatism suggests that your fears, which may seem supported by the words of a few current reactionary Tories, are defeatist, and I say it again, appear delusional in a longer term perspective. This is the first time I have seen the Speaker of the House tear into the Tories like that. It's about time that he did this because they've got away with too much. This wouldn't have happened on John Bercow's or Betty Boothroyd's watches.
Bercow was a narcissist bully himself. Glad he didn't get peerage. He didn't act like the speaker of the house. He acted like he owned the country. Referred to people in the Parliament as "those in a sedentary position". Power certainly got to his head. Now must be spending days reminiscing on his bullying memories hopefully with a smidgen of sadness and regret.
@@STM2811 I'm afraid I am going to disagree with you about Bercow. He controlled the house well and pushed back when the PM at the time lied and illegally prorogued parliament for 6 weeks. That is the sole reason he didn't get a peerage because he held the government to account.
@@neilbowers6956 Of course, not everything about a person is bad. But an independent enquiry corroborated claims about his bullying and lying behaviour. And he's banned for life from entering parliament buildings. Plus, despite being the speaker he wasn't unbiased since he was a closet anti-brexiteer. Again as a human, one can't completely avoid this, but he must have stepped down. He once drove a car which had a pro-euro sticker on and he then said the car belonged to his wife?????He was driving it and for heaven's sake, he was the speaker of the house of commons not some private businessman. But all that notwithstanding, his treatment of parliament like school kids was reprehensible. He used language that was extremely elitist simply because he was in a chair. There is no way such a character could be honoured with peerage.
@sreeT you know rhe saying, play the ball, not the man? Well, here we are talking about the task of speaker, not personality. And to me, Bercow did a much better job, and as regards to being anti-brexit, there again he was simply against the empty rhetoric of most of the brexiteers. When they spoke rubbish, he took them to task. That's his job.
@@garyrowe58 This can go on for a while. As I said, he was a proven bully and banned from parliament. That is a pretty humiliating end to a 10 year long stint. The character does come into question at some point. So many people who get knighthood, later got stripped of it when they did shady things afterwards. Honours and awards undeniably assume impeccable character. When the character is in question, it would be very difficult to justify asking the Monarchy to honour the person regardless of the professional merit. His duty is to enforce good conduct and discipline (oh the irony!!!). He cannot adjudge the veracity of statements made (that is opposition's job).
It is totally unacceptable that we have had successive mates before state governments. From top to bottom, telling friends at papers about government buissness before telling parliament, to preferencially giving put contracts to tory peers and donors. It shows an utter contempt for our democratic institutions.
John Bercow would have totally rinsed them over this and similar transgressions. Nice to see sleepy Lindsay has finally woken up. No 'go for a nice cup of tea' for bad Badenoch.

The Speaker should also hold the PM to account when he doesn't answer questions but responds with a jibe at the opposition leader.
O dear. Hoyle is turning into Bercow.
I was shocked that the Secretary of State would speak in such a condescending tone to the Speaker and to the Members of Parliament in general... I wonder what she thought would happen...
I'd have been shocked if she hadn't. She not the first to be rebuked for this and taken it with bad grace, and probably won't be the last.
Stop being racist
How many times has this happened? And will happen in the future until The Speaker is given some real powers to sanction ministers and government.
@@johaquila Why do you have to bring misogyny and racism into this?
This had nothing to do with her sex or colour.

It is nice though to see that horror Badenach being put in her place. Horrible, arrogant woman.
Not half as clever as she thinks she is, the arrogance of public school teaching.
Not as horrible as that slag Rayner or Abbott 😏
Depressingly, Badenoch barely scrapes into the Top 10 of horrible, arrogant MPs in the current Tory party.
Sadly, I don’t think this will actually make any change in her, nor other Tory ministers when introducing more changes/rules/laws going forward. They will continue to do exactly what they want, how they want and when they want - and just take anything the Speaker may say as a minor irritant to be ignored.
I wouldn’t even call her horrible, just shockingly incompetent. She never seems to be able to get a grasp of what her jobs responsibilities are.
I truly believe she is the best of example of people not knowing who they are voting for
The standards of this government continue to sink even further.
When you think they can’t go lower they manage to do it.
The bar is now so low it represents a trip hazard, and the tories have revoked the law that mandate a warning sign.
This woman is so disrespectful to the Speaker...she speaks with arrogance and contempt and makes me ashamed to be a British woman. I had, in the years passed, admired KB MP but has she just trashed her own reputation? Respect is earned and her reputation is as good as her last performance which is seriously flawed.
The Tories are making circumnavigating parliamentary process the norm. That is the level of contempt they have for democracy and Parliament itself.

@@slaterslater5944 The problem is that most of the House rules don't have a specific enforceable penalty, and when they do the Speaker rarely has the power to enforce them. If MPs and especially the PM have no intention of following the rules there's very little that the Speaker or anyone else can do about it.

He’s finally putting his foot down. We’ve been waiting for this day for far too long.

Where do the Tories find these people ? Democracy died a long time ago
