For what its worth from my perspective and experience, Combo Breaker is more of a social event/party than just being another tournament, for a lot of the same reasons you described. Especially in the older game communities.
If you rage quit in Mortal Kombat they straight up just kill you. An animation of your body desintegrating of getting impaled plays and your opponent still gets their ranked points
now ther's an interesting conversation. mortal kombat is, rather famously, made by a team of smarter dudebro fratboy types who have a LONG history of playing with, against, and around people of every intelligence and temperament, because of the old american arcades. because of actually playing against ragers, the dudebro senses fire up and they's like "DoOoOd, that was great!" "yo, dude! we GOTTA add a quit faetality dude!" "oh. DUE'D. WICKED!" in stark contrast, a lot of... actually, MOST big name fight games are made by japanese people, or culturally diverse japanese people. as japan has a tendency to not like, and has active shunning of, angry rage mentality, japanese people would probably have less, maybe zero experience of the ragequit problem, not realizing that the problem exists, therefore not realizing the problem needs fixed. in short, someone needs to ragequit on a japanese tournament, or at least on a bunch of japanese people.
As someone who grew up playing doujin fighters on a cheap netbook, my first serious fighting game had double airdashes that functioned like runs, my second one was melty blood, I totally agree with you about jumping.
Your comment about the tekken "community" being people at a tournament rather than a community is depressingly accurate. My other love is Ultimate Frisbee and there's a good mix of tournaments where we play to win, and others where there's nothing on the line so we play some games for the fun of it, then just the whole tournament just hangs out and chats /drinks/plays silly games till the wee hours
100% with you on the vegan sausage rolls, bakes are a bit naff though, legit super insightful on all fronts, thanks for sharing and happy holidays fella🖤🖤🖤
Something I like about smash ultimate online is that every character has their own rank, so you can play whoever without worrying about your mains rank. That is the only thing i like about smash ultimate online.
3:00 I think climax of night has tho vibes, really only French bread games but there's drinks, there's a dj, people come together for uni but the vibes are also immaculate
Have a good christmas man - been watching you for years and always a pleasure to see your content - a elden ring type thing would be great, moreso to validate my own viewpoints on the game LOL
Hearing someone equate not liking ranked with a weak mindset is absolutely wack. I don’t even think it’s a competitive vs casual thing, ranked is just a universally miserable and dehumanizing experience. The less I engage with ranked, be that casual sets or a run at my local tournament, the more I enjoy myself.
Meaningless number goes up, meaningless number goes down. If that’s a miserable experience to you, there’s probably a bit of room for improvement in your mindset.
@@6saska realistically man it clearly works on people as a means of driving player retention via tapping into an emotional response and it's kind of bone-headed to dismiss being bothered by it as "room for improvement in your mindset". it's designed to bother you, that's why it exists.
Competitiveness is an excuse to engage with people that share the same level of passion and dedication over a game. At some point people got confused because when you hear someone say "I'm going to a tournament" the motive gets lost in the message. So you have games launching with the idea that people play BECAUSE of the competitions and not because you want to play with someone else. *cough* Battle Spirits saga *cough* RoA 2 *cough* Over half of the players in league of legends that meet the requirements to play ranked, don't do that. Also is that a video on the fez black monolith? looking forward to that
I've had the same realisation you've had about your thoughts on ER but with Dark Souls. I've been sitting on the idea of a video about how that game is ass actually for a long time but over time it's morphed into an idea about using Dark Souls as a jumping off point to discuss what reputation and legacy does to a game and how it's experienced. There's just not a whole lot you can do with "game bad" and trying to drag that out into a longer video is just miserable it's like pulling teeth
I have only been to two events, in both of em the Tekken players left the frame the Tekken 8 tourney ended. I was also told this was gonna happen but didn't want the stereotype to be true in the moment.
How you feel about people just going to an event just to play and leave is exactly how I do about the Colorado FGC. We have dedicated setups for casual games here, but the moment it goes to top 16 there is nobody in the room to play with if you got struck out before top 16 (i alwats do). I want to play the game and improve with others, but that doesnt seem to be the majority opinion here.
maybe this is kindof indulgent,, but may i propose checking out touhou project's Ulil? or AoCF, same/similar bones theres no floor, characters are floating so theres a bit more verticality ig, and theres lots of projectile hijinx (normal touhou games are bullet hell so all the official fighting game spinoffs are still bullet heavy) i like em but ive always wondered how they shape up to other proper fighting games; i don't know enough about mechanics and all those cool intricacies to have interesting thoughts;;;;;;
I am the festive pig that eats the festive slop and this is some good slop
oink

Friendlies > ranked as a learning/improvement experience too imo

Saying it's universally miserable just means you probably miss the point and engage with it in an unhealthy way.
"Dehumanizing" Shit is NOT that deep brother lmfaooo
Goated Slop
Glad to see people are still drinking the going back in time potion :) What a legendary video
