something to consider that was not mentioned here, the average dentist works 33 hours a week, whereas your average physician is closer to 50 hours a week, almost 50% more. So, by that logic, a physician should make at least 50% more just due to the fact that they are working more hours on average. On the same note, should a dentist decide to work more, and own their own practice, they can most definitely earn as much as, if not more than a physician. Not that this matters, but if you're factoring compensation into your future career it is important.
Great points! You are correct. Dentists don't typically work as much as physicians and even more importantly they aren't on call (usually). That being said, owning a dental practice is a different ballgame. At that point you are just as much a business owner as a dentist, which usually comes with more hours. Great income potential with owning your own dentist practice.
Very true and physicians are typically close to the income ceiling with their salary while as a dentist, the sky is the limit. My good friend who owns his own dental practice makes over 400k/yr while working 4 days per week lol
Do you think given the number of dental graduates every year that shortage will be met in 2030 or 2040? I live in the city and it already feels like there are so many dentists/job saturation.
Yeah it is uneven. Many dentists want to live in NYC, LA, or Miami. When I lived in DC, there was a dentist on every block in my neighborhood. I think there will be a shortage of dentists by 2040, but you are right. Certain places might be oversaturated.
Dental offices will never be over saturated. I feel like there are thousands of patients in the word who need dental work. It will always be a lucrative business no matter how many offices are in the state. If u have amazing patient care and great reviews it doesn’t matter. There will never be enough GOOD affordable dentistry in the world. Don’t let the fact that “a lot of people are doing it” stop you from becoming a dentist.
I passed and got a position with a very high salary. They are looking for more dentists. My experience : I spoke to a super kind recruiter who got to know me and where I would like to work. They paid all expenses for my girlfriend and I to visit offices and spend a week with owner dentists. I was offered an extremely high salary. I was offered TN work VISA cost free + relocation expenses coverage (plane ticket, housing, etc.) + many more advantages. I found an office I like a lot and I moved there. Let me know if you would like to know more about the offers available. My friend is a recruiter and is looking for many dentists. The salary is beyond what I expected. Cheers dear colleagues.
You say that dental school debt is near $300k. University of Washington school of dentistry has an average cost of $120k. Am I missing something or is it just much cheaper at UW?
Here's the link I am looking at for the University of Washington for 2020-2021: dental.washington.edu/students/dds-programs/admissions/projected-costs/ 120k would be for the first year for a nonresident. 2nd year would be around 138k as a nonresident.
120k PER year times 4 PLUS interest (5-7% depending on the fed rate that year) accumulated while your in school. 480k +++ that’s an insane amount. There aren’t many schools that are less than 300k anymore, if someone reports their personal debt is less that it’s because they had family help pay for it.
random question. do you know what the step below an orthodontist is? like the people who put on your braces and make retainers and things like that? i’m interested in orthodontics but i do not want to be the main orthodontist and have my own business and stuff.
Different states tax people differently. For example, Florida, Texas and Nevada don't have a state income tax. So dentists in those states will take home much more money than dentists in California or New York.
Pay in general is much lower than the video, school debt is much higher. Not worth it anymore. 500-600k in loans to make 150k is more of the realistic. Something about indeed - corporate dental groups continually post ads whether there is actually an opening or not so the indeed info is not accurate. There’s definitely not enough “real” jobs right now.

How to become a dentist in the UK ?

Can someone without any family help ever hope to become a dentist? Can a low income individual actually take out that many student loans?

How much the taxe?
Depends on the state. Some states have no income tax, others like California have a high income tax rate.
